My sister called to tell me about Robin. I said "Oh no! I haven't gotten over Davy (Jones) yet"! I am an avid BeeGees fan from way back. This is so upsetting!

Very upsetting news but not that unexpected. He did not look well last interview I saw of him. They said the family is at his side. Very sad

I'm not going to comment on this until the inevitable happens, as it appears it will. I was & still am a huge fan.

This is very grim news indeed. I'm hoping he will recover, but it doesn't sound good at this point. Lots of people are pulling for your recovery, Robin.

I feel the same way. I read earlier that Barry was singing to him & his children were playing music to him to try & bring him out of the coma. I'm continuing to pray.

I wonder how his 93 year old mother is doing. She has to be one of the strongest women that's ever walked this earth. I mean, lost youngest son to suicide, Maurice, Robin's twin, lost his life in 2003 and now Robin. I can't imagine how hard this has to be for her and for Barry.

She has to be really strong to handle what she has been through. Andy didn't commit suicide. He died of an accidental drug overdose of cocaine. To see her sons become so successful and die so young must be devastating.

Actually, Andy died of a heart condition caused by his drug use. According to Barry he had kicked the drug habit & was just beginning to get his life & career back together.

My heart goes out to Barbara Gibb. She also lost her husband, Hugh, a few years after Andy. Mr Gibb was never able to get over Andy's death. His health continually declined after Andy died. I met Hugh Gibb briefly in 1979. He seemed like a very down to earth man.

Thanks for clearing that up. I guess you were as wrong as I was, Topkat. :hilarious:

Here's what Wiki says:

On March 5, 1988, Andy Gibb celebrated his 30th birthday in London, England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London,_England), while working on a new album. Soon after, he entered John Radcliffe Hospital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Radcliffe_Hospital) in Oxford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford) complaining of chest pains and died just days later on March 10, 1988, as a result of myocarditis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myocarditis), an inflammation of the heart muscle caused by a recent viral infection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_infection). Gibb's body was returned to the United States where he was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forest_Lawn_Memorial_Park_%28Hollywood_Hills%29) in Los Angeles.

Yes, oops sorry. I forgot that the actual cause of death was a heart condition, but it was reported that the heart condition was caused by cocaine abuse. It was just so sad whatever it was that happened. He was soo young, not to mention talented & good looking. I remember being so upset over Andy's death, I can't even imagine how the family must have felt.

So am I.

I sometimes get annoyed when people refer to them as Australian. They started their careers first in Brisbane (the suburb of Redcliffe) & Sydney (the suburb of Hurstville, which isn't too far from me) but they were all born on the Isle of Man & spent their early childhood in Manchester. Their accents were pure Mancunian (for which as an adopted Liverpudlian I forgave them).

This is Robin singing the Isle of Man's unofficial anthem, Ellen Vannin. I saw them do this. It was incredibly moving.

In short it says that Robin opened his eyes and said a few words to his wife today. According to the article he should have been 'dead by now' so this is being considered as a reprieve, and a miracle.

Topkat
04-20-2012, 08:04 PM
They said the doctors did not expect him to wake up. He is even speaking. How wonderful. His wife was on tv & she is elated. Yes, it is a miracle. Sending prayers his way.

Saddened but not surprised. Loving the Bee Gees was part of my growing up and their music was my 'go to' whenever I felt lost or lonely as a teen which back then was almost a daily occurance.

I have a massive collection of their work and am happy to have it to pull out and listen to. Robin's voice is/was really like no other. I don't know anyone that remotely sounds like him. He will be missed by me, that's for sure.

Anyway, a sad day to be sure. :-(

I knew this would come before long but it still doesn't make it any easier. I have been an avid fan of the Bee Gees since the 70's. I idolized them. When you follow their career so closely & get to know about all their family members it makes it even more difficult.

RIP Robin. Now you will be singing harmonies with Andy & Maurice in heaven.

I had a really weird dream on Sunday night. I was dreaming that I was having a drink with Soda and some of the other Borderers when someone walked in and said that one of the Bee Gees had died, but the name that was used was NOT Robin. I can't remember what name was used. I remember commenting 'But its Robin is ill, not.....'

Then I woke up and heard the news....

RIP Robin. I thought the Bee Gees were a great group too. I saw them live in Dublin in 92.

This has been desperately sad, but it was touching to see the Isle of Man flag & that they sang Jerusalem. As Barry apparently said Robin is with Maurice now (and Andy & their father Hugh, of course). An interesting side note was that Barry compared Robin's humour with that of Spike Milligan. I didn't know Barry was a Spike fan.

Ive always been a dreamer

Thanks for posting that link, Willie. Robin's passing is another in a long list of musicians that are gone way too soon.

I also loved the BeeGees even in the midst of all the disco-bashing. IMHO, those were some great songs.

My heart goes out to Robin's family during this sad time.

R.I.P. Robin.

This is so sad. I just can't imagine what his poor mother is going through. It must have been particularly hard for Barry to speak at the funeral. If what I read at the time of Maurice's death is true, Barry could not bring himself to attend the funeral & paid his respects to Maurice privately after the service. :-(:-(:-(
