I was watching The Hobbit and at one point eagles come down to help fly Bilbo and the gang away from danger. As they come, Bilbo cries, "Look! The eagles are here! Hooray!" I was like "Yeah, that makes me cheer, too." lol

In Stranger than Fiction, Harold Crick goes shopping for an electric guitar and Emma Thompson is doing the voice over characterization of what each guitar might say about the person playing it. The shot comes up of a double neck, and she says, "This one says 'I'm overcompensating for something, guess what it could be.'" Don't know why it made me think of the guys!

On my travels today I passed a sign that said "Frye Road". Close enough to remind me of Glenn. :)

Watching "Nashville", whenever they show a Soundcheck van, I think of the Eagles. Soundcheck is a storage and rehearsal facility in Nashville that was set up by former Eagles roadie, Bob Thompson, with backing from Glenn Frey (although they sold it some years ago). Thompson's LA facility was called "Third Encore".

Okay, bear with me on this...

I was reading a book yesterday about Lady Gregory, a well known figure in Irish literary history. Anyway, I was reading about her because she has a connection to the guy I'm researching, George Russell. So Russsell joined an organisation back in 1897 which meant he had to spend long periods of time away from home working and he was pretty miserable about it. Lady Gregory sent him a copy of Thoreau's book, Walden because it exemplified how to live life in adverse conditions. She also sent him a copy of William HENLEY'S poem, Invictus...

...I know I'm stretching it but when you're on 'Don alert' these things mean something and I got a warm little glow when I saw the names, Thoreau, Walden and Henley :)

I'll put this here since it reminded me of the Eagles almost 30 years ago...

I just finished a Facebook chat with an old friend that I haven't really talked to in years. I have Classic Rewind on, and of course, that music was popular back when this friend and I spent so much time together. We were talking about some of the songs as they came on and the memories we had of them. Heart's Magic Man came on and my friend said, "Remember that time we were at my house listening to Glenn Frey's album?"

She couldn't remember the name of the album (Don was always her favorite) and she said 'the song about all night long'. I said "Allnighter". She laughed and said, "Yeah, we were drinking and listening to that and remember you decided that Magic Man could have been written about him? The blue eyes and the getting high and that if any man would have magic hands it would be him? And I thought it would be about Henley?"

Once she said that, then I did remember it, sort of. There was always a lot of alcohol involved back then, and so heaven knows what else we may have said. Now that she reminded me of that, I'll think of Glenn every time I hear Magic Man.

Yeah - I'm pretty pathetic ... I was in a meeting yesterday at work and a co-worker I had never met before introduced himself as 'Joe' - you'll never guess where my mind drifted.

I wasn't sure where to put these because it's not as if I was reminded of the Eagles BY them - rather I designed them to remind my students of the Eagles, lol. Still, it's the closest we have and I didn't want to start a new topic for it.

I had them diagram the following sentences for their advanced grammar final:

(Sorry my hand-drawn diagrams are a bit messy and crooked with the lines! The students never see the answer key, though! ;) )

Pride and competition cannot fill these empty arms, and the work I put between us doesn't keep me warm.

You were trying to get away from the things you'd done.
(Note: I adjusted the lyrics a bit to get rid of the idiomatic "on the run" and diagrammed "get away" as a phrasal verb)

Wasting our time on cheap talk and wine left us so little to give.
(Note: I went with "cheap" modifying just "talk" instead of both "talk" and "wine" because I felt they wouldn't be drinking cheap wine, lol.)

Sorry for the off-topic, Soda, but I was just wondering whether you do this (or any other) kind of linguistic exercises with the lyrics of other bands, too. I'm thinking of U2, to be precise, as I found Bono's writings absolutely amazing :-)

Fleetwood Mac is the only other band I use for my classes (typically Stevie's lyrics) - although I'm sure Bono - and any other sophisticated lyricists - would work just as well!

Bobby just got this album.
Bobby said "you'd like this...he sounds like Don Henley."
The first song he played me did not have me convinced. haha
I know Don's voice too well.
But this song in particular does remind me of Boys of Summer.

they've been compared to Don Henley, Bruce Springstein, Tom Waite, Dire Straits...

anyway...from what I've heard...it is a nice airy summery 80s sounding album.

ETA: just heard another song that sounds like Young Turks by Rod Stewart

I got a brochure in the mail this week from my local Bon Secours hospital. I was going to toss it, but decided to browse through it first. Something caught my eye on page 4 - a write up about the ER titled Life in the Fast Lane. SWEET when you can turn the ER into something positive!

Speaking of Life in the Fast Lane... I was just watching an episode of Doctor Who called "Gridlock" where a couple is so desperate to get into the "fast lane" (which requires three passengers - an HOV lane essentially) that they kidnap someone! SPOILER ALERT: Turns out the fast lane is full of monsters anyway. ;)

I had to refresh my memory, too. I spent as many hours prepping for that class as I did teaching it. I have an instinct for grammar which has served me well as both a teacher and an editor; I just know where to put the commas and all that jazz without even thinking about it. However, when you have to actually EXPLAIN the intricacies of grammar and the logic behind the construction of the English language (which sometimes isn't so logical), it becomes a lot harder.

I was watching Garth Brooks' Blame It All On My Roots. He was talking about greatest bands in the 70s. He started singing "warm smell of colitas" He was like what the hell colitas are. So he went to the urban dictionary to find out what it means. He says don't do it. So he says part of a marijuana plant(makes sense), a region where wolves live in Arizona(he's going to throw that definition out), and then your azz. So he puts that definition into the line. Warm smell of your azz. And I was thinking I don't think that's what Don and Glenn meant for that line.

I don't know how I miss this because I watched it when it first came on, but I think I miss like an hour of it because I wasn't home.

Your class sounds fascinating, Soda. The tour guides in the Tower of London say that if you speak English/are from an English-speaking country, all of the rights that you enjoy are a direct result of the centuries of law-making that took place in the Tower. I always thought that was so cool, and your class sounds like it might touch on some similar themes.

It's about how social and political change affects language construction as well as the type of changes that took place. I love teaching it. People often take language for granted and don't really examine it. Have you ever wondered how a language that came from a little island without a terribly dense population - a language that didn't even really get started until the first century AD and didn't get going in earnest until the fifth century (compare that to the Greeks, for instance, who had produced the likes of The Odyssey in their language hundreds of years earlier) - how English went from a regional dialect to the dominant language on the planet ("dominant" in terms of everything from global commerce to academic research to pop culture to the internet) in less than 2000 years? It's a fascinating journey indeed.

In a recent interview with writer Jez Butterworth, who has a new play on Broadway:

Quite apart from taking pride in the show, Butterworth is pleased with “The River” for reasons of perversity. He talked about Neil Young, one of his musical heroes, following up his hit album of 1972, “Harvest,” with a series of more muted records, among them “Tonight’s the Night.” He said, “He’s playing ‘Tonight’s the Night’ to an English audience, and they’re screaming at him for songs off ‘Harvest’ and they’re all off ‘Tonight’s the Night,’ and at the end he goes, ‘I’m going to play you something you’ve heard before,’ and they all cheer, and he played ‘Tonight’s the Night.’ Again.”
Instead of perversity, I'm thinking "the Eagles opened on that tour and Glenn Frey has never forgotten that audience reaction."

I happened to notice that at the same time, the thermostat was registering the outside temperature of 60°, so I thought that was pretty cool. The next moment I looked up as I was veering onto the entrance ramp of the interstate and saw the sign with the posted speed limit of 60 mph. Just when I was thinking now this is weird, I realized the license plate of the car ahead of me ended in 60. That's when I was actually a little spooked. So, what does this have to do with the Eagles? Well, I don't know except the Eagles appeared on 60 Minutes and they are all in there 60's. :fear:

November lost me when "their" was used instead of "they're"'; the other errors in the descriptions were annoying, but that one's a deal-breaker for me. ;)

I can see some aspects that are applicable and some that aren't. I don't trust such charts, but I like it when they say nice things about me. ;) That's how they work, though; each one is designed to make people born that month feel special, which in turn makes them want to share the result. Still, there's no harm in having fun with it and it gives us something to talk about! :)

One thing I learned tonight: D.C. United fans are very adamant that you not say "the" in front of the team name. Not sure how that matters.

NightMistBlue

Anyone know why the Eagles are adamant about not being called The Eagles? Is it to avoid being confused with the Philadelphia football team? Or maybe for subtle aesthetic reasons we can't discern.

Someone on another music board I visited said that Don Felder's book should properly have been entitled, "Heaven and Hell: My Life in Eagles." :)

UndertheWire

Henley certainly gets bothered about almost calling Led Zeppelin "The Led Zeppelin" in the doc, so maybe the band had something against "the".

VAisForEagleLovers
06-18-2015, 10:34 AM
I've decided that how I'm going to handle it is this... They are a band, not a flock of birds or a football team. So using substitution, when it's appropriate to say 'band', I'll say 'Eagles'. When its appropriate to say 'the band', I'll say 'the Eagles'. At no time will I ever say 'The Eagles' :D

When listing thing alphabetically, The Eagles puts them way down the list. I never know if I should look in the 'E' section or 'T' section, because I never know if the person publishing the list knows they aren't The Eagles.

In general, I think it looks stupid to put the word 'The' in the name of a group. I can see why The Rolling Stones did it, sort of, but the rest that have the word 'the' in the title baffle me. It's not like anyone tries to make it The Philadelphia Eagles or The Pittsburgh Steelers, yet James Harrison plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I think our guys have the right of it, and I doubt it would be such a big issue except Felder made such a big deal of it being 'The' (if I remember correctly).

Well no, he doesn't, because he's talking normally so he uses normal speech. In any case he hasn't done that since the reunion.

For the record NO football (soccer) team is called 'The' because the vast majority of team names are the name of a place. Very occasionally you will hear 'the Arsenal' as in 'one-nil to the Arsenal'. Arsenal are almost alone in having been named for where they were founded (Woolwich Arsenal) & then not changing it to a more specific locality.

I have seen video in which Steve Martin, while reminiscing about the old days at the (The?) Troubadour, recalls Glenn insisting that the name was Eagles, not The Eagles. Steve commented that he thought it should be the former.

There are lots of bands who don't officially have "the" in the name, but they don't get all hot and bothered when "the" gets used/capitalized. I'm not sure why it annoys the Eagles so much.

I will say this: you'd sound a little silly if you didn't use "the" in front of "eagles" in normal speech regardless of whether it's the band name or the animal because like it or not, the band named themselves after those animals and they have to follow the rules that apply to the common noun they chose as a result. As Funk 50 has pointed out, the band members themselves realize this and use "the" when speaking about the band.

The argument about "the" is nothing more than a semantic issue and I truly hope the band considers its misuse nothing more than a mild annoyance (the T-shirts being done as a joke).

What I take away from all the hoopla is this: do not capitalize "the" in written usage as it is not a part of the name officially, and do not put "the" at all when putting the name of the band in isolation such as on a list. Both of these I keep in mind when writing about them, but neither matters when speaking about them.

Funny aside: recently on a Doctor Who forum, there was a multi-page thread heatedly debating whether the character's name was "Doctor" or "The Doctor". It's not just our guys who care! lol

This is true even for the non-geographically rooted club names - north of the border in Scotland I have never heard people refer to 'The Celtic'. Rangers is a bit different but even then it tends to be either 'The Gers' or simply Rangers.

However, 'the' is very widely used as part of the nicknames of most clubs, with obvious examples from the English Premier League include Liverpool (The Reds), Arsenal (The Gunners), Newcastle United (The Magpies) and Crystal Palace (The Eagles (!)). However there are a few that don't feature 'the' as part of the nickname, such as Tottenham Hotspur ('Spurs' is the near universal nickname) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves).

In the lead up to the Glastonbury festival, I watched/skimmed a tv programme called Glastonbury Golden Greats. It made me think of Glenn, in particular.
Tony Bennett - apparently Glenn listens and sings along with Tony Bennett in the car.
Al Green - from One of These Nights through to True Love, Glenn had a fixation with Al Green - it's where all those falsettos come from.
James Brown - in 1992, Glenn had a picture of James Brown in his recording studio as inspiration. He also told a story about an encounter with JB on a TV appearance.
Brian Wilson - both Glenn and Timothy have recorded Caroline No, and clearly Glenn was influenced by The Beach Boys.
B.B. King - Don Felder saw him play when Don was a young man and Glenn played with King years later.
Kenny Rogers - this time, it's Don Henley and Shiloh.
Paul Simon - just a tenous link with that photo of Glenn and Paul Simon at a party.
(Other artists include Johnny Cash, Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey, but I couldn't find a link with everyone)

On that fateful day in 1892, the outlaws decided to rob two banks at the same time. Yep - Hope you feel better, GA.
