Today my friend Ralph took me out for an early birthday celebration. Every year he takes me out to some obscure place I have never even heard of! This year was no exception. He took me to a fairly new restaurant which overlooks a lovely golf course. So you know who I thought of right away!:) I even was imagining Glenn playing golf there, and then eating lunch in the restaurant afterwards. I have really got it BAD!

Last night hubby and I were in a home improvement store looking at carpet and "What Do I Do With My Heart" played on the sound system. I couldn't believe it. Has it been released as a single? I asked this to hubby and he just shook his head and wandered off.

I assume it was a radio station, but don't know for sure. Anyways, I wandered around listlessly till it was over.

Yesterday, my family was in a music store buying Ethan an electric guitar and accessories for his 13th birthday...and at the front counter, they were selling 'pennywhistles!' I've always known them as recorders, but basically they are those little wind instruments that grade schoolers first learn on in music class. Never knew them as pennywhistles before!

TimothyBFan
02-22-2009, 12:26 PM
I thought pennywhistles were different from recorders also. Hmm!! Research needed I guess.

Oh, how I wish, but quite the contrary, GA. My mom had minor surgery this past week. Physically, she made it through the procedure very well. However, for Alzheimer's patients, nothing is 'routine', so it was a challenge. Since she was unable to go to day care, I had to care for her every day. But to bring this back on topic a little, the only thing my mother will now watch on television is the Farewell I DVD, so I did get to hear that quite a bit this week. See there really is always a silver lining.

OK, did some research...Pennywhistles and recorders are in the same family, but not exactly the same instrument. Pennywhistles are also called tinwhistles, and are usually made of metal. They have 6 holes, and were commonly used in Irish folk music. Recorders are usually made of wood (except for the ones used by grade schoolers, which are made of plastic), and have 7 holes. They were used from Medieval times to the current times, throughout the rest of Europe (as well as the US).

On the left is a Tin Whistle, usually in the key of D it has a full range of 2 octaves, is usually easy tolearn and play and only costs a few euro. Many people buy them as Irish souvenirs!

On the right is a (descant) recorder. It is in the key of C. It has an 'airhole' at the back unlike the tin whistle and also an extra hole at the base. Again the basic student models are inexpensive. Many kids who do well at it move on to the more challenging instruments like the clarinet and oboe as the fingering is pretty much the same.

Hope that helps the research!!

It's my day off so in typical British style, I'm watching This Morning (a magazine TV show over here) and they're doing a segment where their chef has gone to Texas to learn about how to do a proper Texas BBQ. -passed by a town named Emma

-passed by another town named Lyndon. It wasn't Don's Linden but I thought it was neat that it has his name in it

the one that really made me laugh...

I'm guessing that this should go here.

I don't know if I just completely miss heard this lady or if I'm still suffering PEW and have a serious case of Eagles on the brain but while I was at work last night, I could've swore that this customer (she was a really nice lady) said to me "Witchy Woman." It's often kinda loud in casinos with the music playing over the speakers, machines ringing, people talking, laughing and yelling and I don't always hear very well anyway. I was wondering why she said Witchy Woman because that wasn't even the song that was playing over the speakers so I said to her "i'm sorry, I didn't hear you." She responded "What is your name?" I told her my name and she asked me why I was laughing. I told her what I thought she said and then for the rest of the time while I was dealing to her we were talking about the Eagles. I wish I had customers like her at every table. She tipped me $60. Nice lady.

The local tabloid newspaper had an editorial with a reference to 'you can check out any time you like but you can never leave'. They said the Eagles' song is 'fictional' (I think 'metaphorical' is a better word). The context was that once you are involved with the governing party of this state and all its tentacles you can never escape.

Also, I am reading Thomas Hardy's The Return Of The Native, and a chapter title near the end of the book is 'The Night of the Sixth Of November'. How that escaped me I don't know as I always read chapter titles before I start the book.

I now get a happy daydream multiple times daily when I'm working, due to a new way the receptionists have starting marking the files of the next appointment we are about to go into. I've been baby sitting my 4 year old neice since yesterday and this morning I was getting her ready for school and i had to giggle to myself when I saw the t-shirt that her mother packed for her to wear. It said "Life is Good." Close enough for me.

Sidenote: My neice has been learning the words to Hotel California. She knows the song from her dad playing it on his guitar hero. She told me it's one of her favorite songs and now it's routine for us to listen to it everytime we get into my car.

It seems like the closer that Don's Oklahoma concerts get (which ,btw, are next weekend) things keep coming up that remind of them. I've heard at least one Don Henley/Eagles song every night at work this week. Sunday night at work I was treated with Hotel California, Peaceful Easy Feeling, and Boys of Summer and I heard Heart of the Matter last night. Also last night, this really nice couple (they are 2 of my favorite regulars) mentioned that they had recently been to the Downstream Casino. I told them about Don's concert there next Saturday and we talked about the casino and Don the whole 20 minutes that I was at that table. Next weekend needs to hurry up and get here because I'm ready for the real thing rather than the reminders of Don.

The whole time Lou was here in Oklahoma, we saw something nearly everyday that reminded us of either the Eagles or the Border. Lou might be able to add to this because I don't remember all of them.

-We saw several vehicles that had Eagles/Eagle written on them.

-We met up with a few of my friends one evening and my friend's brother was there. His name is Glenn. There was another guy there named John but at first I could've swore that he said his name was Don. It was a nice thought anyway.

-We saw a billboard advertising the Bordertown Casino.

-I didn't see this one but Lou said she saw a sign for Border Patrol Agents. It made me think of our moderators on here. The BPA's aka: Soda, Brooke, Dreamer, DonFan, FreyPower, TimFan, Glenneaglesfan, and Perfect Little Sister.

It's a blog for a Little League Softball Team called The Ducks who play another team called The Eagles. In the original article there is a comment made by a poor unfortunate ignorant and misled individual regarding our boys, but I forgive his stupidity.

"Eagles pitcher Joe Walsh has historically given Ducks aging outfielder Ben Gwin fits. On the day Gwin went 1 for 1, with a walk, hbp, and would score two runs, on a day when the Ducks recorded only 3 hits. (Casale, Gibson)"

Most of you here know that I live in a very small town, New Carlisle, Indiana. It is very proud of it's "historical" landmarks and the history of the town. They have commissioned an artist friend of ours to paint a couple mural's on either end of the small downtown area on the historical buildings. The one Sue is currently working on is right around the corner from me and I saw it over the weekend and she was painting a beautiful old building and the surroundings. I had to run to the store last night and as I rounded the corner she was adding the words above it "Hotel Ca...". On my way back home, I had to stop and find out what it was going to say. She informed me it is "Hotel Carlisle".

Oh well, I was having fun with it for a few minutes at least.

I mean every day I see some truck with the Eagle name. Eagle Moving, Eagle Storage, etc. Street names, Glenn Dr., Eagle Ln. Henley shirts in weekly ads. I mean, they are everywhere! LOL

I hear ya. Today I saw an ad for a company with "Eagles" in their name, and of course was immediately reminded of the band. Then I thought, "How sad that when I see 'Eagle' now, I think of the band rather than the birds who have dibs on that name." ;)

Don't ask me why I thought of this today while walking the dog...

Way back in November, when I was in the infancy of my Borderhood ( I'm guessing I wasn't as free-wheeling with my posts back then)---I went up to my undergrad college Homecoming for the first time in eons. In addition to the football game, I wanted to see the 40th anniversary concert of the most popular mens' acapella group on campus, the Hangovers. They have put out their own CDs over the years, with popular songs that obviously change with the times. Anyway, imagine my surprise when they broke into No More Walks in the Woods, a concert premiere for them! To get an idea of their versatility, they followed it with Disturbia (Rihanna's song)...and both worked. Go figure!

I've got two things that have recently reminded me of the Eagles.

First, I was driving through an underpass on my way to a friends house yesterday. There was some graffiti and I noticed "I  GF" spray painted on it.

Second, I've named my previous cars and I asked my friends to help me pick out a name for my new car. I wasn't coming up with anything and some of the names they were coming up with didn't really feel like the right for my car. After a few minutes, one of my friends said "How about Shiloh?" My response was "Perfect, i love it." After they all agreed that they liked the name i told them the reason why I like it and they just laughed and shook their heads. They can laugh all they want because now I have a new car, a name for it, and a reminder of Don everytime i get in it and drive.

Why did they come up with the name Shiloh if they weren't thinking of Don also? (BTW, I think it's a perfect name for a car... and I don't even know what kind of car you have bought!) (Also a good name for a future pet...)

It certainly is far preferable to either Longbranch or Pennywhistle. ;)

Anyway, I've got a story today too! I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but the teachers for the "young singles" Bible Study at my parent's church are a couple with the last name of Frey. Whenever I visit my parents, I attend their Bible Study class after the Sunday service.

Today, Mr. Frey announced that he had come up with a new way to spread the Word - to place golf tees in baggies along with a slip of paper containing the plan of salvation, and give them away on a golf course.

I know, it is unexceptionable for a man to like golf and want to work it into other activities. This is especially true if he lives in Kingwood where golf courses are so ubiquitous that the golf-themed movie Tin Cup starring Kevin Costner was filmed here. But when that man is named Frey... it made me smile. :)

Drove through Linden, Texas today - the hometown of one Donald Hugh Henley!

I'm currently driving back to Indiana from Houston. To do so, you get on Highway 59 going north and stay on that sucker for well over 200 miles until you get to Arkansas. My family used to get on 59 and go through Texarkana when we visited my grandparents (who have now passed on). However, that trip was made from Beaumont and we were on 59 for about half that time, I'd say. I hadn't made the drive from Houston since 2003. I certainly didn't remember all of the towns Highway 59 snaked through.

Imagine my surprise (and - I must admit - delight) when I saw a sign that said "LINDEN 10 miles." "Well, whaddya know," I thought. "I gotta at least stop here for a minute, even if it's only to get gas."

As I drove through the town, I craned my neck left and right trying to take it all in and imagining how it was in the past.... without getting off the highway, unfortunately. I had a LONG drive ahead of me and no time to linger. A pity as I saw the exit for the Theater and I really would have liked to have seen it.

They are widening 59 around that area, it seems, and there was a great deal of ground torn up, so I couldn't see as far as perhaps I might have in the past. Heck, that highway might not have even been there back in the day for all I know. I was able to see several well-kept homes, a couple churches, a store called "Mr. Ed's" - it was nice. I know there are people on the board who have visited the town and have seen it in much more detail - wish I'd have had time to do so myself!

When I saw an Exxon station, I pulled up. Suddenly I realized that I could get a "souvenir" in the form of a receipt from the gas station, and an additional one from the accompanying store, which has printed on it "Linden, Texas." Now, when I write this out, it all comes off as rather silly, but hey - if you're still reading this and not bored out of your mind or sniffing with contempt, you must be a superfan and understand. ;) Anyone who is doing the sniffing would be well-advised to spare themselves the trouble of reading further, as it only gets worse!

The people in the gas station/rest stop store were very nice. We became acquainted after a slight mishap where I accidentally walked into an employee-only area of the rest stop in an attempt to get to the ladies' room. "Shoot, looks like I'm the kind of girl who really does get lost going to the bathroom," I joked, which got a few chuckles. At any rate, I finally took care of business, got my soda and candy bar, and approached the counter. "You folks take debit cards?" I asked, since I hadn't brought any cash.

"Sure," the man at the counter said, smiling.

"Good," I said. "I was worried that since I had such a itty bitty purchase, you would want cash." (Most of these places do, and my purchase came out to a little over $2).

"Actually, it's supposed to be $5 minimum, but don't worry about it," he replied with a wave of his hand.

"Well, aren't you sweet as can be!" I declared happily. I ran my debit card through the reader and waited for my receipt with perhaps a bigger smile on my face and a tad more enthusiasm than is usual for such an exchange. ;)

Once the receipt printed out, I placed it in my purse pocket carefully before taking the soda and candy bar. "Thank you so much and have a wonderful evening, sir," I told him warmly before turning to leave. I was starting to feel a bit ridiculous at being so excited, but I was grateful nonetheless - and he had indeed been very sweet!

As I pulled out of the station, though, I almost got a souvenir from Linden that I sure DIDN'T want. Many times police cars hover about these small towns and wait for highway traffic to zip through without slowing down, then pull folks over for speeding. When I was 16, I received my first speeding ticket in such a manner when zipping through lovely Silsbee, Texas, lol. Luckily, before I could get up to speed today, somebody else got pulled over down the road and I was well-warned to keep it at the limit. That sure would have been a pretty ignominious exit from Linden if it had been me! (Not that I'm a speed demon or anything but I do have a tendency to perhaps go a tiny bit over the limit).

This story perhaps was a bit overlong considering how little happened... but a receipt for a Coke and a Snickers bar from a gas station in Linden, Texas truly fits the definition of a "little thing that reminds you of the Eagles," wouldn't you say?

Brooke
07-18-2009, 09:37 AM

sodascouts
07-18-2009, 11:28 AM
Well, it's not like I'd know where to go or anything, other than following the signs to the music theater. If I tried to tour the city, I'd probably just get lost. Linden may not be big but when you have no directional sense, it doesn't matter. I'd wind up on a dirt road somewhere and have to turn around and try to get back to the highway with not much to show for my detour! Some of you who've ridden with me know I'm not exaggerating!

It's not like I could knock on somebody's door and say "Hey, I hear Don Henley grew up 'round these parts and fixed up some stuff around here, like the courthouse and some sidewalks... do you know where all that is? I wanna take some photos of it. And while you're at it, do you happen to know where he lived and where he hung out and the like? 'Cause I wanna take some photos of that too... sir, why are you looking at me that way... I'm just a big fan is all...you know folks go see where George Washington used to live, just think of it like that...." [door slams in face] ;)

Anyway, later everybody, I'm off to Indiana!

Yes, which will fade in approximately 2 weeks to no more than the occasional mere hint of an accent that you're used to hearing from me.
