I loved MV and watched every episode and every repeat. When we at my office found that Glenn was going to be on, there was a lot of 'water cooler' discussion. The guys who the week before all wanted to BE Glenn were suddenly saying derogatory things about him. Then the show aired and for days afterwards, all us women, at least fifteen of us, talked about and sighed over the show. There went at least a week where not much work got done thanks to Glenn Frey...

I loved MV when it was on. Crockett and Tubbs were just so cool! I don't remember if I knew Glenn was even in an episode at the time. If I had known, you can bet I would have taped that episode for sure! I might just have to try to find one of those dvds too just to watch that episode! :hmm:

I had a really great "Go me!" day at work. Afterward, as I was striding across the parking lot in my favorite "cool" boots, all proud of myself, I started singing "Those Shoes" under my breath. It made me grin.

Twice today I've heard the line "you are not alone" and it's reminded me of the Eagles!

This morning in an advertisement on tv for marriage counseling and then later in the soap The Young and the Restless. Couldn't help but think of the song each time!

It's not exactly a "little reminder", but thought I'd mention that I picked up the Soul Searchin' CD at my local used record store today and am making my way through it during my commuting time. So far I like it better than I thought I would. I'm finding that I like Glenn's album tracks better than his hits. My favorite so far is "Let's Pretend We're Still In Love". It's so sweet!

I also picked up No Fun Aloud on vinyl and will have to try it out on my new USB turntable. That will have to wait for the weekend.

Thanks to the Survivor players for sparking my desire to buy more Glenn music!

I agree with Soda, you will probably like No Fun Aloud even better, but you never know. As we all know, even Eagles fans taste can vary alot. But, I do like the Soul Searchin' album. Although, it's not one of my personal favorites, Let's Pretend We're Still In Love is a fun, pleasant song. The bridge is my favorite part!

I listened to SS album a lot just after I bought it a few years ago. There ARE quite a few gems on it. I love LPWSIL too, and CPOTF, as well as I Did It For Your Love. Maybe we should discuss this album a bit more when we've finished the survivor.

I was driving down the M6 in England on Monday heading back to Manchester when I noticed a car in the right hand lane registered S 555 PGW. I had a private giggle at that!

So is there a good reason why big acts don't come to Memphis?

I can certainly relate!

sodascouts
02-17-2012, 01:55 PM
The news report pointed out that although Memphis is one of the birthplaces of rock'n'roll, it all comes down to money. Memphis has relatively high tax rates and it's "barely a top 50 market" in terms of ticket sales. This is not a wealthy town; perhaps that's why Memphis is best known for its blues music, lol. It's simply not as big a payday as other places.

The report concluded with, "That is why Memphis, despite being known for its music, is passed over by the big acts again and again."

:sigh:

I think New Zealand sometimes gets passed over because the cost of shipping everything over cuts too far into profits, even assuming the acts are going to Australia.

Lisa

You could have the right to complain. I don't think that bands are touring the same map that they toured when they were younger. Too much travel, and too much fatigue for the players. This does have its disappointments for the fans.

Just pulled up my FB and saw that one of my nieces mentioned me in her status update so I clicked to see it. Seems she's going to be in Vegas the same time as our boys and is trying to talk her hubby into tickets and said "come on Aunt Willie, you need to come too". Told her I will haunt her if she doesn't go and she will be taking $$ with her from me for some treasures.

This is really, really corny, but it did remind me of Glenn.

I subscribe to FourFourTwo, a football (soccer) magazine. The editorial headline in the March issue read 'the look of love is in Jose's eyes' (referring to Real Madrid manager, the rather suave Jose Mourinho) because the issue was coming out in time for Valentine's Day. I won't explain that further, but I was instantly transported back to Niagara Falls.

I'm the same way, WE. Joni sure knew what she was writing about at the time. These lyrics especially remind me of young Glenn ...

Wonder how long Joni waited for his car on a hill (http://www.glennfreyonline.com/caronahill.htm) before she said "Screw this! I don't care how sexy and charming and talented he is - it's over!" :steviesmack: <--- we need one of these with Glenn's 70s hairdo lol

Funny story that is Eagles related...

I am a big fan of a guitar amp company called 65amps - co-owned by Dan Boul and Peter Stroud. Peter Stroud is an amazing session guitarist who has played with the likes of Don Henley, Sheryl Crow, Pete Droge, Sarah McLaclan(sp), etc.

Last week they had a special webcast and Dan and Peter shared stories about how the amp company came about. They make low wattage quieter amps for pros that need quieter stage volume. Peter was having trouble getting his sound at a low volume when playing with Henley and Sheryl and so they eventually came out with 65 Amps.

But they were sharing road stories and Dan brought up a time when Peter was on tour with Don and they were playing at Staples Center in LA. The night before the gig Peter got a call that the Eagles would be joining Don onstage and Peter needed to learn more Eagles songs and if Dan had any records to bring over for Peter to study. Anyway, the day of the gig the whole band showed up minus Don Felder, who Peter had to learn the parts of for the songs they were playing. This was pre-HFO too. This was the "sneak preview" and a surprise thing and the day of the gig in rehearsals Peter made a mistake in a solo of the song.

Right before the gig, Henley was passing Peter in a golf cart and said and I quote "Don't f**k up" (referring to Peter's mistake in soundcheck) and was laughing. Peter said it was hilarious and stressful at the same time. Anyway, the whole band went onstage and the first song was ICTYW and Glenn was sitting behind Peter and Peter was nervous because Glenn played the original part and he had to play the solo that Glenn played on the recording.

Anyway, he played it and the rest of the songs perfectly according to Dan and it was a great night.

But that was pre-HFO tour and one of the first times the band played together (although without Felder) onstage.

Not sure if Soda or anyone knew about this.

Here is the recorded webcast. Eagles/Henley talk starts at 35:45 in.

At any rate, I had a rather unusual "reminder" today!

As I said in another thread, I am watching a "Monkees Marathon" and those of you familiar with the show know that occasionally they Monkees did interview segments where they were asked various random questions. Mike Nesmith got asked a question about things he "dug" and he said there was a "thing going around where people were 'digging' ugly things because "everybody digs beautiful things but it takes special talent to dig ugly things." He said this trend was started by Hearts and Flowers.... a group Bernie Leadon was in at the time!

So Mike was trying to copy something Bernie's band started! Cool, eh?

The Eagles sponsored them, and it was their training camp only. They were playing in south Florida during that stretch and it was a very odd pairing of sponsor and team.

Glenn is from Hockeytown USA (Detroit) and there are pics of him on this board in full hockey gear for a practice, I think with Chicago, but I can't remember. There are several of him with a Maple Leafs shirt on (hurts my head to think about it), but they are all very long ago so I have no idea if he still follows hockey. The others, I don't know.

Hockey is a very under appreciated sport, and my love of all things Penguins is only equaled by my love of all things Steelers.

As for Glenn's ardent love of hockey, check this thread out:

https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=234

You're right that he hasn't spoken of it much since, although in an interview last year he said he "killed hockey in Cleveland" because, when approached, he turned down the opportunity to buy into the team and it went bankrupt.

Today I went to the Memphis Rock and Soul Museum. I took the tour, and there were several Eagles moments!

During the tour, many jukeboxes were displayed, all the way from 1929 to 1979. All of them were real and had records and labels. I took a look at the 1979 one and an Eagles single - Please Come Home for Christmas/Funky New Year - was one of the selections!

Secondly, in the list of artists who had recorded in Memphis, Joe Walsh's name appeared. That was hardly surprising, as in the late 80s he hung out in Memphis all the time and the cover of his album Got Any Gum is a photo of the Memphian Theater (http://www.joewalshonline.com/images/gotanygumcover.jpg). Still, it was cool to see.

The biggest surprise, however, was a showcase of a certain brand of guitar. There were pictures of several musicians playing the brand of guitar. What should I see in the case but this very photo:

Those are cool guitars too. Les Paul style body shape with Telecaster hardware and a bolt on neck with a rosewood fretboard.

It's just sloppy and unprofessional. I'm more contemptuous of it than I am offended by it.

Like Bernie Leadon, Glenn also has to endure his last name being mispronounced a great deal, most typically by British interviewers who haven't done their homework. In the UK, the surname "Frey" rhymes with "Grey." It's only those who've bothered to do their research that know Glenn's surname is pronounced "Fry" - which is also the case for the vast majority of Americans with the surname.

But on the other hand, poor Ralph Fiennes has spent over two decades telling American interviewers to pronounce his name like "Rafe Fines" - and many still haven't learned!

I am amazed but I just bought a Beach House down by the Ocean near the Great Ocean Road,in a gorgeous place called Airey's Inlet.
Apart from it being a beautiful special place, at the end of the road where the Beach is, I find none other than EAGLE ROCK PARADE.
IT IS SUCH A MAGIC PLACE, WE ARE JUST SHIFTING IN THE FURNITURE NOW, JUST THE PLACE TO LISTEN TO A BIT OF MAGICAL MUSIC.
You cannot get any closer to the beach than Eagle Rock Parade,I am going down there this week for my first time.
It is just so fitting, as i love the Eagles. I loved them when i was young, now they are even better, some of us get better with age, and they certainly have, even though my favourite is Timothy.A bit shy,and humble, i like that!!!

Soda - Love that the picture of Glenn is hanging in the Memphis Rock and Soul Museum, but I agree with you that it appears very unprofessional that his name is misspelled. Maybe you should contact the museum and let them know about. If they are true professionals, I think they would appreciate you letting them know and take measure to quickly get it corrected.

And I had to laugh about the song in Blue Hawaii reminding you of ASWTDID. I've seen the movie several times, but definitely never noticed that.

And finally, I went to Myrtle Beach over the weekend to my niece's cheerleading competition. They have a souvenir beach shop chain down there named, of all things .... Eagles. I must have seen ten of the shops within a two mile radius. :partytime:

Cool Dreamer! You'd HAVE to buy something there! Even just for the bag!

For the record, over here most people pronounce Glenn 's name as Frey (pronounced 'Fray') Laura has been known to call out 'Frey' at Radio DJs who make this mistake as well! I'm doing my best but its hard work trying to convert a population of 4 million.

However he does have a good following here! I'm hoping it will translate into enough album sales to make him think its worth touring here in the Autumn. (Yeah. Right)

I was browsing the Hard Rock website and came across the 'Leather and Lace' bracelet. It reminded me of Don H.

Isn't it great (if a trifle disconcerting) when our kids can share our enthusiasm? We were in the car today when the acoustic version of Hotel California came on - Holly was listening to the introduction and said, "Is this Hotel California?" I was so proud - her Dad just rolled his eyes.

Kiwi, On The Border tortilla chips are the only brand I buy! Aside from the image it conjurs of our favorite band, they're danged good.

On a slightly different note, I just finished reading a book called 'a soft place to land' by Susan Rebecca White. The main character, Ruthie, is talking about one of her English class, says they are reading the Odyssey, and goes on to say the teacher starts talking about 'siren songs'. As the discussion evolves the students ask the teacher to sing them a siren song. As Ruthie describes it....

"Mr. Roman stepped out from behind the podium where he had been lecturing, tucked his hands into the pockets of his chinos, fixed his gaze somewhere above the girls, and began singing in a clear, unwavering voice about a desperado who needed to come to his senses."

"He was singing something about the queen of diamonds, the queen of hearts."

"Mr. Ronan had (finally) reached the apex of the song, the repeated line, sung with gusto, demanding that the desperado accept love."
I nearly fell off the chair laughing! But it was the LAST thing I expect to see in this book.

I was sent a survey by Hard Rock as I am on their mailing list. They want to release a new fragrance. One of the suggestions they wanted people to vote on for the name was 'The Heat Is On'

I did not read the other options before I voted!

Love it, GA! :D

Some Glenn fans (Dreamer is one) refer to him as 'Sugar'; I have to say I'm not one of them.

It's a term of endearment many of us use and have used for years; however, FP has expressed her disapproval of it more than once. I use it only occasionally when feeling especially affectionate, but I think it quite suits him. ;)

That's it you see; I don't think it suits him at all because it's too 'sickly-sweet'. He uses it himself in True Love, of course. Give me 'honey' any day, which he uses in River Of Dreams. I suppose 'honey' is also sickly-sweet but to me it sounds less cloying.

But my own term which I use occasionally is 'Sweetie' and probably the same objections can be raised about that. I tend to use it in a humorous manner to myself; I don't post it on the board. Anyway there it is now for all to know about. :headshake:

I don't generally refer to him as Sugar, either. But because many here do, when I heard the song I thought of him! I have thought of him as Sweetie, but mostly I think of him as Handsome. For obvious reasons.

I sometimes refer to him as 'Sunshine' Coz when I open my locker in the mornings every day his smiling face beams out at me. So I've gotten into the habit of saying 'Hiya Sunshine'. Pathetic..... but it works for me!

Saw this in a shoe shop yesterday...

Well - just to be clear I certainly didn't coin the phrase, so I don't want to be singled out or get undue credit for it.

To me, it's splitting hairs to quibble over Sugar, Honey, Sweetie, Glennie Bear, or any of the other terms of endearment mentioned. I think any and all apply to this HS&G man. It may be good for us to do a sample testing - I'll bet any of them would make him giggle (or run).

Yesterday in a meeting at work, it was noted that an event would take place on June 5. My first thought was, "Hey, that's Analog Man Day." Didn't say it out loud, of course.

It also happened a couple days earlier when my sister-in-law asked if we could give her a ride someplace on May 8 - "After Hours Day."

I went into my Twitter account yesterday & I noticed that a girl is following me. She's from a band called The SHEAGLES, the first all girl Eagles tribute band. I looked them up on YouTube!!! Actually,,they weren't bad! LOL
Thought that was funny because I don't really tweet that much, but she knows I'm an Eagles fan! :-?

This morning at church, the pastor opened his sermon with playing a little of Randy Newman's 'You've Got a Friend In Me', then read the lyrics to the song. Since Glenn has mentioned several times that he likes Randy Newman's songs, I thought of him.

On the flight back to Memphis last night, I grabbed an in-flight magazine and thumbed through it. There was a cute article about collectors of old "nerd cars" from the seventies and the writer described how he rode one of these collector's fully restored AMC Pacer through town. He said almost every man in a certain age bracket who saw him go by gasped in delight despite the car's infamy when it came out, lol. Now, the good part: while he did so, he listened to an old 8-track cassette of Hotel California in the car's 8-track player. He said the quality of the cassette was so bad that it sounded like the Eagles had recorded the album underwater.

I was reminded of the Eagles (sorta) Saturday night at the Ted Nugent concert and almost had to have a smackdown because the guy was obviously a moron!!!!

The guy in front of us was showing off his new Nugent tshirt he bought and I asked politely how much they were selling for. He told me $40.00. I turned to hubby and said, that's more than I paid for my Eagles shirts. The guy turned to me and said, (and I still can't believe he said this), "well Ted Nugent is probably a bit better known than the Eagles." :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilar ious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: I didn't miss a beat and laughing said, "and that's why he's playing the Laporte County Fair while the Eagles are filling stadiums." Oops!!!!!!!! Then the moron looked at my hubby's Beatles shirt and said "the Beatles don't deserve to be in the same arena as Ted Nugent". Seriously, you drunken moron? Poor hubby thought he was going to have to bail my behind out of jail but I didn't want to waste my time on the redneck idiot! Jeez!!!!

I'll go to the concerts thread and give a few more details about the concert (or as I like to call it--- the white supremacist rally). :fear:

While reading the bio of Rob Lowe, (quite interesting, BTW) he writes about a script he received for the show "The West Wing".
Apparently this was one of Rob's favorite episodes from Season 2, called, "Someone's Going to Emergency, Someone's Going to Jail". In this episode Rob had a lead role, and was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Well, that's a line right from Don Henley's, New York Minute, so I immediately recognized the line...
Apparently, every script for tv has a tile and they took a line from Don's song!....

Oh wait, now maybe Don will ask for his royalty check! LOL

My parents and I called my dad's mother in Ohio tonight as it was her birthday and she always asks me to play (and sing, quite badly :hilarious:) "Take It To The Limit". I forgot that until she asked me tonight. So I had to go grab an acoustic and play it! :D For not having played it in AGES I did okay on the playing part. I play it in Glenn's key of "G" as I cannot sing it in Randy's key. She isn't a huge Eagles fan but loves that song. She always said it was a Beatles song until I corrected her and she rembered. She's in her 70s and is bedridden with severe osteoarthritis and starts of dementia.

Cool! I wonder where Don's family is from originally?

According to this site (http://www.houseofnames.com/henley-family-crest), the name "Henley" is English and derives from the dominant family who lived in a town called Henley in ancient Anglo-Saxon times. Eventually this family became "Lords of the Manor of Henley" in Somerset and produced barons and earls, who dropped it down to just "Baron Henley" etc.

As the family expanded, branches moved away and formed towns in England such as Henley-on-Thames where the Henley Royal Regatta is held, and Henley-in-Arden (which happens to be on the other end of the Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, and is from whence the street derived its name).

So, our Don Henley descends (admittedly distantly) from English nobility. Not bad!
