Austin, you're Copper is adorable?

Here is my Copper, caught in the act of trying to eat the flowers.

GL, your Copper is adorable too! My cat used to try to eat my flowers too! She was intrigued whenever I had fresh ones on the table. But, she would never eat anything but cat food. I tried meat, eggs, milk.....nope! Yet she will kill a bird or frog outside and eat it! :yuck: :headscratch:

And I love your room! It's beautiful! So light and airy! I have a similar blue color on my bedroom walls and love it.

Our cats aren't allowed on tables (while we're around) ;) They are allowed on the sofas, chairs and beds. They never seem to be interested in the coffee table, end tables, kitchen counter or kitchen table, but like I said, who knows what they do when we're not around?

GlennLover
04-25-2014, 10:06 PM
We tried at first to keep them off the tables, but it was a losing battle. One we just couldn't stop so the others get away with it too. Yes, they are very spoiled kitties!

We had to put our dog Joey to sleep today. He was 16. I know we did the right thing, but it is still hard. He has had several issues, and I knew the time was coming. He didn't get up at all yesterday, would not eat or drink. He just looked like he was ready to go. I would never let him suffer. He was the last of our hero dogs. When we had a house fire, we had 3 dogs. They woke us up and we were out of the house before the smoke alarms went off. I may have told this story before. If so I apologize, but it helps to talk about him. We had him since he was 8 weeks old. 16 years is a long time. Our other dog keeps walking around and crying. I think he's looking for Joey. Thanks for listening.

Oh, SG I'm so sorry. My cat is also 16 and we got him at about 7 weeks. It makes me not want to have pets, I just never get over it when they die. If I close my eyes, I can still feel the height, fur, and bodies of my dog and cat who died 20 and 5 years ago respectively. Sounds like you did the exact right thing with Joey, you are a good pet owner.

I have been meaning to introduce my Hobbes for a while now...here he is. He is almost 16, we call him "The Old Man." Yes, same name as Timothy B's dog that bit his hand.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/marymansfield/587b982e-10d0-484b-bba9-51bbb6755f3b_zps827b4276.jpg

And here he is in his Christmas present which is a heated cat bed we call "The Hotbox." It must feel good on his old bones. The sides are supposed to be up, and there is a roof, but he is too big for it, so we just leave it open and he spills out in every direction.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/marymansfield/photo6_zps8552da7d.jpg

This cat has fleas.

We have had him for all 17 years of his life and he's never had a problem until we moved to San Diego. He has lived all over the country. The topical treatments have not been working and this week my daughter is covered in flea bites. I took him to the vet today and they gave him an oral pill and said all fleas would be gone in 8 hours - and now they are literally jumping off of him and dying. Now I have to get aggressive on the house, bedding, etc...I am despondent!

My one year old dog, Brownie. We think that he's part boxer and pitbull. He showed up in our yard a year ago this month as a 6-8 week old puppy. I begged my mom to let me keep him (someone had obviously dropped him off here.) My mom isn't a dog person, but she didn't have the heart to make him homeless again. He really is a sweet, albeit rambunctious dog. (Photos from my Facebook page)

My mom and I have taken in a stray cat that was hanging around the place where my aunt lives. My aunt had been feeding him, but she couldn't keep him, so now he's ours. He's tamed, and somewhat used to being held. He's named Buddy, and he's a medium length black and white cat who's about 9-10 months old. We just brung him home anout 30 minutes ago. We're hoping that he gets along well with Tigger and Tabby, since they're not too far apart in age.

Once I get a photo, I'll post it.

Sadly, Buddy escaped from our trailer early yesterday morning while we were sleeping. We were keeping him inside until he had gotten more used to things, but he'd never been inside much. There's a small hole next to the door that has never been fixed. We keep an old towel in the hole to block drafts and keep vermin out. Somehow he managed to remove the towel, and outside he went. No sign of him since. I think that he was probably terrified of my dog, Brownie, who is kept on a runner outside at night. Our other cats are used to him, but not Buddy. We've searched and searched and nothing. I hope he's safe somwhere. :(

I hope so, Brooke. There's a small feral cat colony nearby that he might have joined. A neighbor feeds those cats twice a day. I really hope that he won't try to get back to my aunt's place, which is 25 miles away.

On the plus side, it's nice to wake up on a cold morning and find your fluffy baby asleep on your chest. Thank you, Midnight! :)

AG, Buddy reminds me of a stray cat that came to my house this summer, colorwise.

I've had many, many cats in my life. Since a child. This cat was very friendly to be a stray. I thought he must have been someone's so I called all the neighbors and posted on Fb about him. No one claimed him though. Several times when I was babysitting my grandson this cat would follow us around outside. I had to watch him though. Several times he would jump at my little 20 month old, like he was going to attack him. I had never seen a cat do that before. He would star at him, follow him and eventually run up and jump at him. It was weird. I had to watch closely and make sure he didn't bite or scratch him. But yet, he seemed to be a nice cat. I wonder if my grandson, being little, the cat thought he was another cat? It was strange. The cat finally went on his way. Haven't seen him for a while now, thankfully!

AlreadyGone95

I have a similar story. My late maternal grandma had cats all her life. She fit the definition of crazy old cat lady. I mean, at one point 4 years ago, she had over 50 cats! Only about 20 of them would be considered pets. One of them she had bottle fed as a newborn, and therefore he became close to her and my uncle. He would run and hide from anyone else (including me), except for my 4 year old cousin. He would let her tote him all over the house and play with him. We could never figure out why my cousin who was a wild child could do that, except maybe because she was so small. Baby doll (the cat) is still alive and well. Eventually, he has calmed down and usually, I can pet him.

I've had cats all my life as well. We've taken in strays, unwantrd cats etc. Right now, not counting Buddy, we havd 6 cats.

This is another one of my uncle's cats, Garfield(nicknamed Bubba). He's about 2 years old, and is very much a people cat. He is almost inseparable with my uncle, and he loves being with me. In the past month or so, he's gotten to the point where he voluntarily wants to ride with my uncle the 14 mile round trip to and from my house. He enjoys it. I took the photo yesterday of Garfield laying in my uncle's lap on the way back to his house.

2 out of the 5 cats at chillin by me, 2 are enjoying the sunshine at the patio door & 1 is sleeping on my bed.

I "may" adopt my son's girlfriend's uncle's cat. He passed away in December. His niece was taking care of her but is moving and won't take her. My son's girlfriend is allergic to cats so my son volunteered me to adopt her. I am not happy but can't see her going to a shelter either since she is 12. She won't get adopted.

I lost one of my fur babies in August...wasn't going to get another cat...but my sister showed up at my door with this 9 month old boy in November...her neighbors were moving and needed to get rid of him...so of course my dear sister thought of me...so when I saw the long hair...I knew he would be named Timothy B. Loving all the pics of everyone's pets!!! :D Here is my family's dog Callie. We got her 3 years ago and she's 4 years old. She's a mix of White Shepherd and Yellow Lab. Her original name was Sally but we decided to change it as we felt it didn't fit her and I first suggested Callie since Callie was the name of a character in a book I liked, and my Dad liked it as he was born in California (Air Force baby). Even though Callie's the family dog she's so attached to my Dad and cries like a baby when he goes to work. LOL She's the most affectionate dog I've ever had. :)

I stayed with my brother who had regular pet rats, and they were really nice pets if you don't mind having your ears sniffed a lot. Gambian pouched rats are closer to wild than domesticated rats, and require more knowledge and care in their upkeep, but their owners love them. There are things to be careful of. E.g. if you have two males then it's important to wash hands after handling one as the other may react to the smell of another male with aggression. They also chew a lot. Etc.

TL;DR: I wasn't joking.

Were you the Forum member who wrote about Randy some time ago, "He looks like he should own a pack of beagles"? I know what you mean. I grew up with beagles and they are sweet, but also very high energy - they love to bark and run, which might not be ideal for a 70-year old man who's been through a lot. That's why he needs me there as the beagle whisperer.

Now to get quickly back on topic: as I was saying, I adore beagles. But my condo association doesn't allow pets, so I have to make do with cooing over the stray cats in the area, of which there are always plenty. Let me try to save it to another file and then upload it. I really liked that one of Copper because he looks so red! He still had his buddy Pumpkin so he wasn't depressed and hadn't turned all gray in the face yet :(

I could post a pic that my husband hates to get back at him for being such a PC control freak. Basically, he's sleeping on his side of his bed on his left side with his head on the pillows and Copper is in my place, sleeping like a,human, on his, left side, head on the pillow, body under the covers. He snuck in there when I got up to go to the bathroom.

Not sure if this was a pet or a working dog, but I had an unusual experience the other day. I was cycling through some pretty deserted countryside. When I had to stop to open a farm gate, I noticed a large dog appear and come running towards me. Not knowing what the dog would do, I waited. It ran up to me, climbing through a fence on the way, climbed up me, and then hugged me with its front legs. Quite tightly too. I waited a bit more to see what it would do, but it just held on. Eventually I said "down" in an authoritative voice, and it did.

NightMistBlue, sorry, I should have made it clear! That was Copper with a bunch of other boarders. Pumpkin wasn't in that pic. She did not tolerate the cold well due to her short coat and likely chose to hang out out and lounge inside with the other doggie boarders( this place is better than some of the places I've had to stay at!)

AnnoyingTwit(I feel awful addressing you as that btw!), that is a very interesting story indeed. It sounds just like Copper's disposition! Perhaps a long, long lost cousin. The Redbone Coonhound originally came from Scotland/ Northern England. When brought to the States breeder in TN bred it with other hounds to make it more "swamp sturdy".

Poor Copper's early life was a hard one in KY.Was bounced from home to home to correctional facility to train to be a therapy dog for the inmates, then yanked out of that program cause some idiot family decided they had to have him as a pet right then and there. Sadly, he was found abandoned 2 months later malnourished on the side of a road.

He, along with some other dogs were brought to a hound rescue org. in MA. We adopted him when he was 5 not after our sweet Basset Hound passed to keep our Ridgeback company. Copper is 9 now and how anyone could give this boy up is beyond me. Even Eddie, our neurotic Siamese mix, loves him.

AT, you must be irresistible to dogs. And wasn't that nicer than being hugged by a Gambian pouch rat? Quite.

The meaning of the term 'nanofiction' varies a bit. Typically it's for very short stories of about 100 words or fewer. Usually there is a challenge to get the number of words exact (as in the 55 word stories you mentioned.) The story lengths go down to about six word stories, such as the story often mis-attributed to George Bernard Shaw:

For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn.

So, we could write a story like this:

Guitarist hired, then fired. Now rich.

I do sometimes seem to get on well with dogs. Not all dogs of course. Mainly I apply two strategies. One is when meeting a new dog, get down to their height so that I'm not towering over them which can be scary for dogs, particularly small ones. The other is not to initiate contact but let the dog do that. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't, but I have managed to make friends with some dogs quickly whom I am told don't like many people.

I did a similar thing with a neighbour's cat whom the owners told me doesn't like anyone outside his owner's family. It took a while, and I even applied cat body language. E.g. staring at a cat is a challenge. To turn and look away, or blink, is, I'm told, cat language for being friendly. It took a while but I made friends with him, but he runs if anyone else turns up except for his owners. (Note: I don't feed this cat nor allow him inside our house as this can lead to cats changing their owners, which seems to have happened to this family as their other cat moved down the road.)

Still would like a Gambian Pouched Rat though :)

Returning to the hugging dog, I didn't do anything there. I suspect that dog probably goes around hugging everyone. Or, maybe if it's a farm dog, perhaps that's part of its training to control livestock or something.

I'm reviving this old thread because my beloved pup, Smuggler, has been facing some health problems. In December, I took him to the vet and they did a blood test and found out his liver enzymes were very elevated. They put him on a liver support supplement and told me to come back in a month to get him checked out. His bloodwork came back a little bit better on his follow-up visit, but were still pretty high. So, for the last several months, we have had to go through tests, ultra sounds, and other diagnostic procedures to attempt to find out what is causing his problem. I was going to schedule a liver biopsy, but about that time, he also began limping and losing use of his hind legs. They did another scan on him and did find arthritis in his hind legs and spine. I decided against the liver biopsy since the arthritis complicates things. So, he is on a low protein and low fat diet for his liver disease, along with his liver supplement. However, with the problem in his hind legs, he has to keep his muscles strong, which requires high protein, so I am just trying to split the difference. He also can't take the typical pain medications for his arthritis because they can also elevate his liver enzymes. So, they put him on a human medication called Gabapentin, that hasn't received FDA approval for dogs. We've had a rough few months, but he is finally stable for now. He is doing better now than he has all year and when he's better, I'm better. Just crossing my fingers that he'll stay stable for a good while. If he begins to deteriorate, I'm considering putting him on CBD. Smuggler turned 10 on March 17th and we celebrated our 10 year anniversary of his adoption on May 16th. I hope and pray every day that he still has a few more years of quality life left cause I love my little pup pup soooo much.

Best wishes to Smuggler and hope for improved health! These pets are children and it seems so unfair to me they live such short lives compared to humans.

To give an example of how painfully short pet's lives are, I posted when I lost my beagle Shiloh on this very thread back in September 2010 shortly after I joined here. We got Gibson the Boxer as a puppy and I posted about how we lost Shiloh and how we acquired a puppy a couple months later. Gibson died in March of this year. So in the span of the time I've been on the Border (which doesn't seem that long), I've already lost a dog that I posted puppy pictures of (sadly they went away when Tinypic went out of business) here. He lived to be 10.5 years old, the typical lifespan for a male Boxer. He developed DCM, a devastating heart condition that Boxers can get. Time can both seem like it flies and seem like it drags on forever. A 15 minute wait for something can feel like an eternity and 15 years can go in the blink of an eye. It just seems unreal to me sometimes...

Thanks Soda and Austin for thinking of Smuggler. I hadn't had a dog since our family dog when I was a teenager, so it was a really big and life-changing decision when I got Smuggler 10 years ago. I'm afraid I wasn't mentally prepared when I found out about his health issues. I was expecting a few more years of good health for him. Either way, I'm sure it wouldn't have been any easier for me. I had another scare yesterday when he got up to walk and suddenly the hind part of his body had severe muscle tremors. I was startled, but, fortunately, it only lasted about 10 seconds. It's been a stressful few months, but my main concern is to keep him as comfortable as I can for as long as I can. However, I won't let him suffer.

That's how my family feels as well Dreamer. With Gib, we didn't have to make a hard decision. We had just found out he had DCM when he started coughing, took him to the U of I in Illinois, they said he had DCM and ARVC (an electrical problem secondary to the structural problem). We knew his time was going to be short and we'd ultimately have to make a decision. However they had warned us about the possibility of a sudden ventricular tachycardia and if that happened, he would collapse and be gone in seconds. And that is exactly what happened right here at home. While I wish I had more time with him, I'm glad he went the way he did. I miss that boy. He and I weren't always real close early on just in terms of favorites, Gibson was a mama's boy and while he loved dad and I, he really really really loved his mama and when she was home she had his undivided attention and followed her around and was totally attached at the hip. That said, in his older years he became more of a pack animal and was happiest when all 3 of us were home and started growing closer to dad and I. I grew closer to him too and my dad retired in 2019 and so he would fix breakfast for himself and give Gibson some egg whites and kept him company until I woke up. So he started hanging out with us more while my mom was at work. And so by the time we lost him, we were as close as we ever were.
