Oh I know, HB. My heart aches for children living in bad situations. Having Cutter has made me very aware of that. It's also made me consider becoming a foster parent. If I didn't have to work, I would do it now. I will have to wait till I retire and if I'm able physically, I would like to try it.

I was trawling through my camera memory cards before (inspired by DJ's shot above ;)) and found some more bits and pieces, these taken last summer in Northern Ireland.

This one is of a village called Cushendun (you can just about see it in the bay!) in County Antrim, taken from high up on the road carrying on further along the coast.
http://i.imgur.com/X1tRamm.jpg

This next one is about six miles further along that road, at a place called Torr Head. The buildings on the head itself (behind the photo) were abandoned back in the 1920s, but are preserved enough to walk around. Quite a haunting place. Incidentally this is also the place in Northern Ireland closest to Scotland, about 12 miles away to the east. The bit of Scotland you can see is called Mull of Kintyre, immortalised by Paul McCartney.

http://i.imgur.com/Ey2OIeB.jpg

And finally is a shot of Lough [Loch] Fea, in County Tyrone.

Quite a fine country 8-)

03-24-2015, 01:21 PM
They are both lovely Brooke, it is very difficult to catch a sunrise without items in the foreground appearing too dark. Given a choice I would go for the first one, simply beacuse the gate tends to give the whole scene a bit more perspective. It draws your eye to that area of the pic, and then the sun is directly above it. JMHO!! Well done. I drive to work so rarely get the opportunity to take pics.

VAisForEagleLovers
03-24-2015, 03:42 PM
Very nice, Brooke! I'm no expert, but I like the first one better as well. The darkness of the gate balances out the sun, and in my opinion, adds to the mood of the picture, kind of a restful, relaxing sunrise. The fact that you were driving along and determined this would make a good picture means you have a good eye. Having the right equipment is only half of the equation!

Thanks for your comments everyone!

The fence and pasture is just across the road from my driveway so it was easy to stop, get out and take the picture. At first I liked the one without the gate, but the more I looked at them I kind of thought the gate added to the pic too!

The art college I attended was previously a Magdalene Laundry. For those of you who don't know, these were institutions run by religious orders (ie: nuns) to 'care' for those less fortunate citizens. These mainly comprised orphans or unmarried mothers and mothers-to-be. Recent reports into these so-called 'caring' institutions have shown how horrifying the reality was, living in a virtual prison and treated like a slave - absolutely awful.

Anyway, like I said the building that housed the art college was once one such place. And even the caretakers were reluctant to stay there on their own at night because several claimed to have heard babies crying and to have seen figures in the corridors. One of the briefs we were given as students was to make a video so my friend and I persuaded the caretaker to let us up into the attics where the mothers and babies had slept. As the building was due for renovation, this was probably one of the last times anyone was allowed up there. My friend was pretty freaked out about it though I have to say I didn't feel anything sinister there but it was spooky to see the dormatories where the keys were still in the locks (the mothers were obviously locked in at night!) But I was perturbed when I saw the imprint of the cross below that had once hung on the wall. That, I think, seemed more haunting and disconcerting than anything else up there as all the furniture and fittings had been removed. I was discussing it with a friend recently and came across it and thought some of you might find it interesting.

Brooke - I love your pictures especially the one with the gate - When we have mornings like that here during the summer, you just know its going to be a gorgeous hazy summers day.

DD - love your picture as well - it looks like a 3D image of the Cross and shadow and considering where it was, its definitely eerie - I bet you could feel the presence of the nuns and the poor mothers if you stayed there long enough - I know I wouldn't be there to find out !!

The movie Philomena goes into the story of one girl who got pregnant out of wedlock and was sent to a home run by nuns to be so called cared for. It did not paint a pretty picture. The girls were used as slaves and servants and their children were sold to wealthy couples right out from under them. Sad.

DD, the one of the cross didn't freak me out. Just very eerie as Dreamer said.

I really like to take pictures and need to buy myself a better camera. I have hundreds of my grandson. Many more than of my own kids because this digital age makes it so much easier to keep them.

I have been watching an owl swoop in to a field beside our yard on some evenings and would so love to have a good picture of it. I tried to take one as it sat in a tree watching the field for it's next meal, but it won't zoom enough. :-x

DivineDon

I love all the sunrise and sunset pics being posted here. We obviously have some very talented and artistic people on board. Since I can't even draw a straight line, Photography is the only way I can record images. Even my students laugh at my attempts at diagrams.

Just before I went to Fallsview in 2011, I bought a hi spec hand camera as I didn't want to drag the DSLR so far. We were up on the Hill of Tara which is allegedly the meeting place of the ancient high kings of Ireland and where St Patrick lit a Paschal fire when he brought Christianity to Ireland. Anyway I took this pic of the sunset which I rather like, but I'm annoyed that I hadn't realised the date imprint was on it.

Very nice GA, love the silhouette - very atmospheric  I love silhoeuttes, shadows and reflections.

I spent 10 days in Dubrovnik on a painting residency and our studio was in the university of Dubrovnik. It was a huge, cavernous old building which bore the remnants of history. You could still see the bullet holes in the walls from the war with Serbia. Anyway, here's one photo I took of the sun reflecting thorugh the window onto the floor.

As I feel almost compelled to do now, here are some snaps from a few days away I had on the Isle of Wight a few weeks ago. Hope you enjoy!

http://i.imgur.com/UN85jo5.jpg
The above is of Alum Bay from the Needles, the westernmost point on the island. I had hoped to get a decent one of the Needles (a rock formation) to upload, alas the chalk is so thick in the air all of my photos were blurry!

http://i.imgur.com/Ek4skV3.jpg
Not usually one for this kind of photo, but that's the view of the sunset from my hotel window across a town called Shanklin. One of the best I've seen in a while.

http://i.imgur.com/GFjtTNH.jpg
This is a place called Wootton Creek, not amazingly special but I thought made for a nice photo. Also probably the only place in Europe with 'Creek' in its name

http://i.imgur.com/9UMUN1C.jpg
Again not the most inspiring snap but I felt this probably summed up the general scenery best: over half of the island is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Rising in the background I think is St Boniface Down, the highest point on the isle.

http://i.imgur.com/CWUNAsQ.jpg
This is the seafront at a town called Sandown, with the esplanade at Shanklin (the town in the second photo) visible on the headland.

http://i.imgur.com/Ywk0EwK.jpg
... And this is the view immediately to the left of the above, with the end of the pier just in view. The next bit of land beyond that horizon is Cherbourg in France!

http://i.imgur.com/IODYAnF.jpg
Finally (sorry for the poor composition!) is the war memorial on Portsmouth seafront, back on the mainland. One of the biggest Navy bases in the UK is stationed in the city, so they take all that very seriously.

Great pic Brooke. Been years (lots) since I went to a Cards game. Just not able to with current health. Last time I went, McGwire was still really big so that tells you how long its been.

I see it's been a while, Austin!

Nice pedals, too! I really don't know a thing about them though!

Good pic, AG95!

I am loving all these photos!

Brooke - I agree with Lacken - you look too young to have a grandchild! And those are great photos of the Cards game & ballpark.

Wow Austin - that is a fabulous pedalboard! I love the colors and you're right, I don't have a clue of what I am looking at here. :hilarious:

And that is a great pic of you AG95! I bet that smile is due to the hard earned diploma - Congratulations!

Thanks HB! It was alot easier than the alternative: 3 years of high school (I had dropped out in the 10th grade due to an unknown illness that the doctors couldn't diagnose :brickwall:) or 5 months to get a GED once I turned 18? It was well worth the effort. I was an honor graduate, meaning that I achieved some of the best scores in the area, including the highest in social studies.

Now, I just need to figure out what to do about college.

VA, that is a lovely Memorial pic. I was in the States 3 years ago for Memorial Day and I could see what a part it plays in American History. You guys do your vets proud.

Austin, even though I DO play guitar I have no idea how those pedals work, but they sure are cute!!

Brooke, like the others say, you look waaaaaaay to young to be a grandma! Not quite the old lady in the rocking chair with her knitting!!

The Sport pics look great too

I buy records from an online friend on a monthly basis. He knew that I have become very interested ( or obsessed) with the Eagles and its members, so for the month of June, he found these records for me. They came in yesterday. After supper, I'm going to get the record player going! I'll probably start with Glenn's No Fun Aloud first.

Beautiful, DJ!

We've been in flood stage around here for the past month or so and an old iron bridge has collapsed from it. Thought you might like to see a little history! Not a lot of people used it anymore, mainly the people who live in the immediate area. It's just a few miles from me and my mom lived near it when she was a kid. Built in 1910.

June 26-farm land on the other side is also flooded

June 27-beginning to bend up, it collapsed the next evening.

Good heavens Brooke, is this summer unusual with the rain you have been having. I must say it must be sad to see the bridge going. Will they replace it as is or will they put up a more 'modern' version in its place? I'm sure you'd like to see the character of the original one.

Ga, we had the one of the wettest Junes on record, around 11 inches. Three is normal. As for replacing the bridge, I doubt it. It wasn't used much, just by the locals mostly. It was more of a scenic cut through road these days. If they did manage to find money to replace it, it would be a modern concrete version.

It's still raining. We've had around 5 inches already for July. Normal is 3-4 inches. http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/mgraincloud.gif

:) This year's reunion was one of the best that I remember(I've gone to all but one since I was born). It was a bit bittersweet as my family lost 2 members this year, one of my great uncles and my grandma. This is usually the only time where I get to see my huge extended family. I'm reading Bill Bryson's book too, for the second time. This trip inspired me to read it again.

Beautiful pictures, Brooke. Thanks for sharing.

It's funny because last fall my son and I went to see the Eagles in Boston. Some of you may remember, that it was a fundraiser for Walden Woods, and before the concert, Don Henley presented Robert Redford an award for his environmentalism. Talking to my brother and sil a few weeks later, I found out that they had gone to see Robert Redford speak at UMAss (I think it was the day before or the day after the concert), and one of the things he spoke about was the movie he was working in - Walk in the Woods. I was pretty excited about it as I loved the book. I haven't had a chance to see the movie yet, and I'm really hoping I can still catch it in a theater somewhere this weekend, as I'd love to see it on the big screen.

It's funny, all these connections, though! :)

This is the Coheelee Creek Covered bridge outside of Blakely, Georgia, in Early County, Georgia. It's the only covered bridge in Georgia that is located south of Macon. It was built in the late 1800s and fell into disrepair when automobiles became the main form of transportation. It was rebuilt in the 1980s, and is now a local tourist attraction that's free to the public(has a picnic area, small park, fishing area), but you can't walk onto the bridge sadly. You have to be looking for it to find it because it is well off the beaten path. (only accessible by turning off of the highway onto county roads and then a dirt road).

My mom and I went there last month. My Nana lives in Blakely, so we decided to spend some time there after we visited her. Here are some of the photos I took. (The sun was very bright and it was about 3 pm, so that's why there's some "white out" aspects)

Front view:

Inside view. (I put my phone in between the bars and snapped a photo.)

Here's just the waterfall and creek. You can walk all the way up to it, but it is a very steep decline and very slippery. (I almost busted my butt taking this photo)

My pictures do not show the true beauty of it all. You need a very good camera, I guess. But we had a fabulous time and it was all breathtaking!

Your pics are fabulous Brooke - I love the one of the Blue Ridge mountains, and the fall colours are so beautiful. Keep snapping - I love the pics you show here. So glad you had such a wonderful time too.

What I've been doing with my uncle for the past 6 hours. My first time doing a smoked turkey(redneck style). We used my pa pa's 30 year old homemade smoker.

My uncle prepping it.

Here's a few of the photos I took of the big Christmas parade in Albany. (Here's the full album (https://m.facebook.com/kim.dixon.370/albums/904384326305246/?ref=bookmarks)). It was dark, and I didn't use flash, but most came out decent or better.

The Forty and Eight Train (Hassan Temple) a staple of the parade. It's usually out in front.

That's a beautiful bird, GA.

I went a day trip yesterday. There's a state park on the site where Jefferson Davis was captured after the fall of the Confederacy. There's a monument tgat marks the exact spot. The museum is partly dedicated to him, and the rest contains relics from the Civil War. Most of the relics came from the descendants of Georgia's Confederate veterans, things like uniforms, cannonballs, rifles, photographs etc. The place is small, but it was worth the 4 hour round trip. We were the only visitors and there was only one person working the museum. We talked with the guy for a good half hour. The park isn't that popular since it's way off the beaten path. Luckily, the park and museum can't close because of the historic value, and the tourism it creates. When I told the man that I wanted to have a job like his, his eyes lit up. My mom took a few photos, so I thought I would share them.

It was a joint effort, mostly by my husband! He did the tearing out, plumbing, made the bar, hung the shelves, and did the backsplash. I had the cabinets painted by a friend that does that, I couldn't handle the drudgery! Plus it would have taken me forever and she did it in 4 days!

I don't have a garden, so give me the rabbits, too. Like I said, that was the first time I had seen rabbits in my yard in at least 4 years. They used to be so abundant in numbers, but now, they're very scarce. I guess that too many have been killed by hunters or predators.

Cute!!

I bought a new guitar yesterday. I was looking for a smaller acoustic guitar but ended up with this jumbo-sized Epiphone because it sounds so good and plays so easy.

Thank you! I prefer a lighter color wood but the great sound & feel just couldn't be denied.

While at the guitar store, I spotted a used 12-string guitar for a relative bargain price. That's been on my mind too. If challenged by my family for the number of guitars I own, I'll use Glenn's excuse, "I'm just looking for one I can play!"

Yes, that's an elephant's head. The location for the reunions for the past 6 years have been hunting lodges. This was our first year at this place. The whole place is full of hunting trophies, both local and big (Africn) game animals. I don't mind local trophies because I have been surrounded by them my whole life (I live 2 miles away from a wildlife preserve), but the elephant, gazelles, zebra, leopard etc creeped me out.

For me in my family on private occasions we let 18-17 year olds drink. I tried it my first time at my cousins wedding and well long story short:yuck::dizzy:

My 18th birthday is 1 month and 2 days away. My gift is goj g to be a twelve string acoustic-electric guitar. As soon as my College Applications are done I will start hunting.

In Ireland the legal age for drinking in public is 18 although if you look under about 25 they WILL ask for ID! But at home there are no official restrictions. I DO remember a certain young lady having a tequila sunrise (only a tiny bit of tequila) in my kitchen at 2am one morning last year when Soda was visiting us!!
