View Full Version : "The Essential Timothy Tunes"--Help so I don't go insane!!

As I shared in the Milwaukee concert thread, my sister left the show utterly besotted over Tim, or as we know affectionately refer to him in texts, as "TBS." Only issue is that the only two songs she has featuring him on her iPod are the usual suspects--"I Can't Tell You Why" and "Love Will Keep Us Alive." And they're beautiful songs, but if I have to hear them again while driving with her, I'm going to strangle myself with a string from Tim's bass. ;)

So I'm hoping you girls can recommend songs (preferably on iTunes) that show the range of TBS' abilities, and of his career. From Poco to the Eagles to solo stuff, share the essentials and the deep cuts that MUST be heard by any self-respecting TBS fangirl. Sadly, I don't know if she'd appreciate tracks featuring backing vocals or merely bass work, but if there's one that must be heard, pass it on.

I'd love to give her a list of perhaps 10-15 songs (don't want to overwhelm her) to broaden her horizons, so pass them along!

Here are my three faves - none are from his solo albums - the others on this thread will provide their faves from his solo albums. I think these 3 would be widely considered "essential"...

Poco's "Rose of Cimarron" - TBS at his most epic!!!!!!!!!! Your sister will never be the same.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF91ul0ZR64

Poco's "Keep on Tryin'" - Maybe his most well-known Poco song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfQp80S3tM4&list=PLB592F65A5F68E052

"So in Love" from the Fast Times at Ridgemont High soundtrack - just for something a little different

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7mVgnFnuGY

All on iTunes. Enjoy!!!

Oooh, I just thought of another interesting one - Beach Boys' "Caroline No" - TBS fans, essential in the top 15 or no??

I never knew he was the one singing that version of "So In Love"--seen "Fast Times..." millions of times--wow! Too cool! Love it.

I'm going to get a great education here, too!

I love his most recent solo album Expando. I think every track on the album is good. It's quite different from his other albums.

I love Expando too, and would recommend Parachute and Friday Night, both on ITunes.

Can I add 'Downtime' to that list? One of my favourite songs from Expando.

Ooh yes, Downtime has such a great message, and I love those backup vocals by Dwight Yoakam and "Mr. Rock". ;-)

Secular Praise and A Good Day are also fantastic. AEW, I suggest you get the entire Expando album!

LOL @ Mr. Rock! Still makes me laugh. (By the way, I did think you might have been channelling Don when you addressed me as Miss Troubadour in Joe's thread... ;))

Oh my, where to start? GET THEM ALL!!! I MEAN ALL!!!

Here's my list of must haves, off the top of my head, by oldest album first-- unfortunately, I cannot tell you if they're on iTunes or not. I've got them all downloaded from albums and cds, not iTunes. His discography is a hard one to collect these days because they go for big money sometimes. Expando being the exception because it's newer and it's his best so that's a win/win.

As for individual songs.....

Off of Playin' It Cool (This album has some "rockers" on it)

Playin' It Cool
So Much In Love
Somethings Wrong
Wrong Number
Give Me The Money
Tell Me What You Dream

Off of Timothy B.

Boys Night Out
Jazz Street (one of my faves)
Don't Give Up
A Better Day Is Coming

Off of Tell Me The Truth

Was It Just The Moonlight
Down By The River (one of my faves-- so soulful)
Something Sad (one of my faves)

Off of Feed The Fire (was my fave solo album till Expando)

The Shadow
Every Song Is You (my 2nd fave solo song)
Top Of The Stairs
Make You Feel My Love
Just Say Goodbye (I think this is only a bonus track on certain pressings of the cd-I know I have it on one of my FTF cds & I think it's the Japanese one but didn't pull it out to see)

Off of Expando (if she only buys 1 of his lps/cds-- tell her this is the one she needs. It's all Timothy written, sang, arranged, etc... & has some awesome guest stars on it. Whole thing done in his home studio) But my faves on it are....

Secular Praise (My all time favorite Timothy solo song--OMG!!)
Friday Night
Parachute (this rocks!!)
White Boy From Sacramento

Then there's his Poco hits....

Keep On Tryin'
Rose Of Cimarron
Just For Me And You
Flyin' Solo
Restrain

I know I've forgotten some, I'm sure.

Sorry this is such a long post but I'm a bit passionate about this topic. :inlove:

Ummm.... WOW.... Looking at my above post, that probably wasn't a whole lot of help to narrow it down, was it? :hilarious: Sorry about that, but I did include some "deep tracks" but I must add that you could consider most of his albums all deep tracks since most people are clueless about ANY of his stuff, sad to say, but true.

Also wanted to add after re-reading your original post--as for his backing vocals.... He's done TONS of them and I have made myself almost crazy over the years trying to collect them all, especially his old stuff on albums. But the ones that really stick out for me is Steely Dan's Aja & Pretzel Logic. But he's also done background vocals on Bob Segar, Dan Fogelberg, Boz Scaggs, America, etc... this list goes on and on. I'm sure Soda has them listed on the TimothyBSchmitonline.com site.

In fact, if you haven't already, make sure you tell your sister to hit up that site. It has ALL the info she'll ever need about Timothy.

And tell her welcome to the club!!! :faint:

Speaking of backing vocals, I want to mention I Won't Hold You Back (http://youtu.be/2k1RUGWkf9o) by Toto. Timothy sings on it and you can really hear him in the chorus. Lefsetz wrote about this track here (http://www.rhino.com/article/bob-lefsetz-welcome-to-my-world-i-wont-hold-you-back), and sang Timothy B's praises!

Ok - new fan but can't stop listening to TBS solo trax:

Something Sad (really touching)
Compassion (nearly criticises someone then backs off)
Let Me Go (Tim gets tough then thinks better of it)
Every Song Is You
Caroline No (Beach Boys cover)
So Much in Love

and with Poco:

as already suggested:
Keep On Tryin'
Rose of Cimarron
and he may not sing lead but still sounds lovely on:
Just for Me and You
Magnolia (J. J. Cale cover)

I'd like to add a few more Poco songs. They were the most underrated band! Sorry if some of these are repeats.
From the Inside
I Can See Everything
Restrain
Here We Go Again
I'll Be Back Again
Just Like Me
Starin' at the Sky

First of all, I agree that she should buy the Expando album since it is still commercially available unlike Tim's other solo albums. I also agree with most of the songs that others have mentioned here with a couple of exceptions. I'm not nearly as crazy about Something Sad or Top of the Stairs as others here; and I would also add In Roxy's Eyes as a 'must have'. There are several threads in this forum where all of Tim's albums are discussed that I would recommend reading if you are interested in others opinions. Here's one where the topic is similar to this one ...

https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2876

I actually burned a CD which was my compilation of 'The Very Best of Timothy B Schmit' and really enjoy listening to it. When I get more time, I'll post the list of songs that I included on it.

Definitely Let It Be Me, the duet with Jackson Browne. I could listen to that song every day for the rest of my life. What a gem.

Thanks, F50! This is great, I don't know why I've never heard Carry On! Was it really released in 2000? Timothy sounds so much like, CSN, I just figured it was from the early '70s (I obviously don't know the movie.) I can't believe he sung that in 2000.

I can watch the Caroline No video over and over.

I've always thought this TBS version of the classic oldies song was under-rated.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7j0B9zSrC5s&index=13&list=PLwblYtlioHzRaUz-tiw3RHQn6yrLxRlK1

Also IMO, he did a good job of Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love".

And I really enjoy his version of Paul McCartney's "Every Night" on the Let Us In Nashville: A Tribute to Linda McCartney (available on Amazon). Too bad that album didn't get better promos.

AND let's not forget his backup work (along with Henley) on Garden Party (John Fogerty).

Thanks cynd1231, 3 great ones there>

Art Garfunkel had a big hit single with I Only Have Eyes For You during the seventies. He's also covered So Much In Love. Art and Tim's voices share the same territory.

I wish somebody had locked Mark Hudson in a cupboard while they were recording Paul McCartney's "Every Night".

He really ruins it for me. You can listen to Tim's (plus Laurence Juber) Every Night on this page;

Thanks for the links.

And, FWIW, Timothy's version of Dylan's Make You Feel My Love is one of my favorite covers of that song!

If you'd like some really obscure Timothy, pull up the soundtrack for the movie "Cry Baby" starring Johnny Depp. Timothy performed on two songs - 'Sh-Boom' and 'Mr. Sandman' - with Gerry Beckley (from the group America) and someone else, doing backup/harmony with Rachel Sweet under the name Baldwin and the Whiffles. If you listen carefully you can hear Timothy come thru clearly in spots.
