The Avatar & Signature You Have To Have [Archive] - The Border: An Eagles Message Board

Imagine there has been a change in Border policy & we can only have ONE avatar and ONE signature, forever (yes, I know; it would hit me hard).

I know some of you don't have a signature & loyally stick to the one avatar but for those of us who change them, if you could only choose one each, which one would it be?

It might give you an opportunity to talk about how you choose avs & sigs; why you choose a particular one at a particular time, etc. For example Soda chooses some of hers to mark anniversaries. I will be doing that tomorrow with the av (NB not the favourite av; that has no anniversary attached to it).

And I am not answering this myself until tomorrow. Those who know me could probably guess the avatar. I haven't decided on the signature yet.

I'll have to think about it. I like changing it up a lot on forums, and changing cover photos on Facebook. Back in the old days, I'd change my MySpace profile theme a lot too. :hilarious:

I'm sure it'd be an av of Joe and probably a sig of Joe and Felder.

thought of my all time favorite avatar immediately...it was the first one I ever had when I joined the board...and it's now my permanent screen saver...my all time favorite pic....don't have a fave signature...yet...

That is a favourite of mine too. If Tim were my favourite that would be high on my list.

I'm wondering if people will feel pressured into making a choice here. That is one reason why I hesitated to start the topic. If you don't wish to answer or you couldn't choose, that's fine!

I've had the same avatar since I joined, mainly because Don looks so hot in it. I have no plans to change it. I have no signature. I guess I should get on that.

Commenting about how I choose avatars -

I like to choose avatars based on what's happening, time of year, etc. I change for various anniversaries of important events, for holidays, for Survivor games, album releases... that kind of thing. After I go to a show, I usually use an avie from that show for a week or so. Sometimes it's something to do with what's going on with me - like when I was moving, I used an avatar of Glenn in a car, lol.

It's almost always Glenn, although when a band member has a birthday I change it to that member for the day. The only non-band members I've worn avies for are Fleetwood Mac-related; Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham for their birthdays and Bob Welch for his death.

I try to shake it up, though, because that's part of the fun for me. Sometimes I'll have an avatar for a week, sometimes a couple weeks, sometimes for a few days, sometimes one day. It's rare I'll have the same one for more than three weeks.

Once upon a time, when our board software wasn't as good, I would use the same avatar for months. I think I used the one above for over a year. It was kind of nice to have a certain photo where people saw it and knew it was your post before they even read your name. That aspect of a static avatar is very cool.

But variety is the spice of life!

I change signatures less often, but they too are based on the same factors as I choose my avies. Often they are of the whole band rather than just Glenn. Also, I usually make a signature for each show I'm going to and use it for a week or so before the show - helps me get in the spirit. ;) I'm not sure what my favorite signature is, though!

ETA: I changed mine today, for instance, to mark the anniversary of Glenn's album Soul Searchin', but my History of the Eagles animated avatar will be back soon and will remain until we finish the Survivor.

I can't pick just one either. I don't change my avi that much, but I do love to have the option. Mine are usually of Timothy, but sometimes I have done Joe in an avi. I just found a pic of Glenn that I really love, so I may use that one next.

I have more issues with the signature. A friend of mine made a few for me, & I did make some awhile back, but I now forgot what program I used & how I did it.
Can someone please recommend a good program to make signatures??? One that is not too complicated. I would really appreciate it!!!

Right now I'm loving my new TIM avi, so That is my favorite! If I HAD to stick with one, I could live with this one!

With my signatures, this one is the best I have ever made. I would keep this one forever.

I find it hard to change my av. I don't know why, but when I find one I like I usually keep it for quite a while. The one now is from the new doc and I loved the pic of Glenn so much I knew it had to be one. I don't know when I'll change it. Something will happen to make me. Could be a comment from someone or just a new picture. Who knows?!

The sigs are different. I'm not good at making them. This one's for the doc, but they aren't that important to me. If I knew more about it, and I know some of you have tried hard to teach us, maybe!

I do like having the choice though.

If I could only have one signature, 'for sentimental reasons' it is the one below which I will be using this week. I have other sigs made by people who are better at this than I am which are probably superior. I have a couple I made myself that I am very fond of (particularly Brave New World & Lone Arranger) but the fact that this signature even got MADE is what clinches it. Of course I took the photo which helps.

This week's avatar is always used in the week of August 5 as that is the anniversary of the first time I saw Glenn in 1988. For some reason I never made it into a closeup. I think most people are familiar enough with the photo & what was going on.

Most of the time I just go with mood, unless I have made something recently which needs to be used.

And your sig-what else could you pic? A sig with a photo that you took yourself to commemorate such a momentous occasion!!! Fantastic!

I've got to go back & look at all mine. Some of the older ones are stored on an external hard drive so I'll hook it up & reminisce before I make my choices.

However, some of you may have noticed that I never change my avatar now. The moment I saw Smokin' Hot (my name for my avatar) back in January 2007, I knew that was my new avatar. I was on the phone with Soda when I saw it for the first time. She immediately cropped it for me, and it has been my avatar ever since. At the time, I hadn't planned on keeping it forever. But everyone was kidding me and said they were going to steal it from me, so I figured if I ever gave it up, I may never get it back. So here I am still stuck with Smokin' Hot. :grin:

But, as Soda said, as soon as members see that avatar, they immediately recognize it as my post.

I understand the appeal of being 'recognised' by your avatar but that is something that has never bothered me. There are too many great photos for me to do that. I don't know if on Monday morning my time people will look at the board & wonder what I will be using that week.

I'm one who changes mine fairly often and have been known to also change them up to other non-Eagle faves on their birthdays, or special days, I've had Benjamin several times (happening again shortly for his birthday and his passing within a month of each other) and Pagey.

BUT if I had to have only one, the signature is easy..... It's so special to me, it was a present from our own Troub who also made me a beautiful wallpaper and a FB cover photo of same.

I'm going to have to really think about this and even then I'm not sure I'll come up with something. I don't notice birthdays, anniversaries, special occasions, so mine don't change because of anything like that. Usually I'll see a new or different photo in the Walsh Worship thread and decide I like it enough to change, but more often my decision to change things is based on whether I have time to think about it!

Willie, I was going to mention the sig you picked; it's one of the first ones that came to mind, and it's not even mine! :hilarious: I think Troub outdid herself with that one. :applause:

And whenever I use or see this sig, I think of the wonderful YouTube video of Secular Praise that you made almost 2 years ago to the day this week after my Mom died. You don't know how much that video meant to me at that time (and still does). You, or I can, hunt it up again and repost it in the Timothy vids thread. I think the new Timothy fan members would really appreciate it.

This is hard because I can't post pictures at the mo, so I will have to rely on my descriptive skills. ;) I change my sigs and avatars all the freakin' time, purely because there are so many great pictures out there. Also, I may just be in a particular 'mood' - eg: young Don, or if I've been watching a new concert video I might take a screen cap and use that. I've noticed that I will usually use a couple of different eras - if my av is '70s Don, I'll probably use current Don or '90s Don as my sig.

If I had to choose a forever sig, I think I'd go with the black and white photo of bearded, denim-clad Don leaning against the Thoreau sign in Walden Woods in the early '90s. I love that Thoreau quote and the photo does a pretty good job of encapsulating lots of things I love.

An avatar is more difficult... One that springs to mind that I have stuck to lately is a '70s screen cap from the documentary where Don is in a jacket, sunglasses and baseball cap, sort of turned and grinning at the camera. I think they're at an airport or emerging from a limo. It's natural and cute and something about it just makes me smile. I also have some HFO screen caps that I love and various close-up mid '70s portraits. The BBC 1973 screen caps that I took and the BOML caps from the documentary concert are other favourites.

Of course, I have also been known to use a different artist in my sig, either to mark an occasion or just because I am particularly into that artist at that time. I have used James Taylor, Danny Kortchmar, Levon Helm and Gram Parsons.

Remember when Expando was coming out and I went to the Timothy solo show in Chicago with TBF and Soda and switched my avatar to Timothy for awhile? You guys thought I'd gone crazy! :laugh: Nobody could get used to Prettymaid posting with a Timothy avatar!

I haven't had a chance to check my oldies yet, but in looking at the avs & sigs I have saved on Photobucket I chose these as a couple of favourites. I sometimes change mine for an occasion but, it's usually when I see a new picture I like or when I feel like creating something that I change to a new one.

I started playing with PhotoPlus the other night...can't even get started...How do you guys learn these programs?...I couldn't figure out anything past getting a picture on the screen to start with...I must be very tech challenged or something!

zelda, I just taught myself by trial and error. Use a pre-existing photo to play around with the image settings and options. Start slow and then you can move on to harder stuff like layering.

Since FP suggested that we imagine that we're only allowed one avatar and one sig, I thought I would try to come up with something. Whew! I'm glad we can change them anytime we want, because I'm not too attached to any single one.

I prefer current photos of Joe smiling, so this is one I sometimes go back to.

I made this one a couple of years ago after reading Troub's instructions on how to layer. I purposely chose individual HFO photos of all of the guys with their eyes closed. With the sky and water as a backdrop I find it very calming.
