Just dropping in to let you know that we got home a few hours ago. We're all exhausted, so I'm off to bed shortly, but will write more ASAP. We had an amazing holiday - I completely fell in love with Rhodes. I have a busy time ahead, starting from this weekend (family reunion/birthday party, followed by moving into my new house and preparing for my new job.) It's all go, so definitely back to reality with a bump... although it is exciting. Lots of changes. Have to admit I'm already planning my next trip abroad!

For once something interesting in my life happened today.

Had the option of opening my exam results live on an (British based) international TV station. Turned it down. Way too attention seeking for my liking.

Odd to think though, tomorrow my face could have been seen the world over by millions on the most important day of my life so far...

Lol TLR! For once something interesting happened in your life, you posted it and the thread was closed before anybody had a chance to comment! :hilarious:

Sorry, but that's funny.

It's okay, I moved it to the new thread!

That's so exciting that you were picked to be on a show like that! It's okay that you turned it down. Those things aren't for everyone. I hope you were pleased with your results!

Troub - Welcome Home!

-------

Today I've broken a guitar's volume knob(pot) and had a headache earlier today. Not necessarily a great day but I've had much worse and the guitar can get a new part.

I'm still feeling better and more energized, makes me think it was the thyroid afterall.

TLR and PM, it is ironic, isn't it? In a thread like this, no matter where you break it to close it, it's never a good time! I swear this is the most active thread on the board, and it never seems to have a lull.

My things arrived from VA yesterday. I spent all day unpacking boxes while the movers kept piling them in. A coworker and friend surprised me by showing up in the afternoon to help and we worked flat out for over six hours. The only break we took is when our boss called us to tell us the customer is very upset with an issue that involves both of us, so today is not going to be a good one. We have to go into his office and explain some numbers this afternoon.

No apology needed, FP. The thread reached page 300 and was closed, as is the norm. I just couldn't help but find humor in the way TLR's post was worded, only to have the thread closed immediately after posting it! :hilarious: I'm still chuckling.

Troub, it's so nice to hear from you, all safe and sound back home! I'm anxious to hear what it was about Rhodes that made you fall in love with it.

Rhodes is just beautiful. Great beaches, pretty little towns, clear turquoise water and so much ancient history. The history is probably the thing that captured me most - I am a history freak and love nothing more than going to historical buildings/sites. The history of that island is incredible and stretches back further than most of us can even imagine... There is a carving of a shipwreck in the cliffs at the bottom of the acropolis at Lindos that dates all the way back to B.C.! It is just mindblowing. We had such a fantastic time. Mostly relaxing by the pool and on the beach, but we also wandered around the towns of Pefkos, Lindos and Rhodes and went on a Lazy Day boat cruise, during which we stopped at three different bays and were able to swim and snorkel in the clear waters there. I just loved every minute of it. One of the bays was at Lindos, right in the shadow of the acropolis. It was amazing swimming in the sea and looking up at the cliff with the ancient acropolis standing on top of it.

The tavernas were pretty and friendly, and served delicious Greek food... Even as a vegan, I was able to have a lot of local fare - olives, pita and houmous, Greek salad, grilled Mediterranean vegetables and fruit for dessert. The local produce (especially fruit and vegetables) is so delicious that the Greeks finish most meals with fruit, especially watermelon - it is often brought out as a complimentary dessert with your bill.

The Old Town of Rhodes is somewhere you must visit if you go there - it is a walled town built in the 14th century by the Knights of St. John, and is still very much in use along with the modern town. It's not just ruins, as you would expect. It's an integral part of the place. Lindos is beautiful, too - a small town nestled between the mountains and the sea. The acropolis towers over it, and its streets are small and crammed with shops and little tavernas and cafes. It was just all so romantic to me... I would go back there in a heartbeat. The weather was in the low 30's each day. Very hot, almost a little too hot to walk too far in the middle of the day, but perfect for lazing around the pool and swimming. The evenings were warm and we spent many of them sitting on the roof-terrace of a taverna, overlooking the sea on one side and the mountains on another.

I also discovered something cool... There was a villa right opposite our resort that we used to admire each night on our walk to Pefkos and joke about buying, because it had a For Sale sign on the gate. Well, a few days ago we found out who was selling it... only David freaking Gilmour! Apparently he comes to Rhodes a lot (unfortunately not when I was there!) We were able to take some pics of the villa, which I can post soon. It seems it has been empty for a while, as it needs some work doing to it. Still very cool to see where one of my musical heroes used to take his vacations!

I was only 9. It was on the morning news. But my cousins had been visiting from the UK a few weeks previously and one of them had told me how much she loved Elvis. So I remember feeling very sorry for her that day.

I had a friend visiting from out of town last week and it's kept me quite occupied. I took her to Graceland this week (as is required for any out of town guest ;) ) and the amount of flowers and tributes placed around Elvis' grave to commemorate the anniversary of his death overflowed into the driveway.

Massive amounts of people here in Memphis this week to attend candlelight vigils in his memory and other more celebratory events such as concerts to keep things from getting too maudlin.

Love reading about what's happening in people's lives, even if I don't get a chance to respond to each one... I read them all!

Welcome home Troub! Very neat about the villa.

Glad you feel better Austin!

Hope things got sorted out at work, VA.

Dad has been doing cardiac rehab and hasn't felt 'right' since Thursday's session. Today he was really feeling off and mentioned it. His heart rate and blood pressure were very high so they admitted him to the hospital and did part of a stress test this afternoon, second part will be tomorrow.

Personally I feel that a big part of the problem is a batch of supposedly really good moonshine given to him a little while ago. Apparently the whole family imbibed freely this past weekend, without me, and all were feeling a bit rough today. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

------

I'm planning/thinking about the rest of this year.

I have a gig on Labor Day Weekend, then I go to Ohio on September 1st until the 5th, when I arrive in Tennessee. Then I leave the 7th to head home....

Then the last week in September is my Ausfest show, where I have all the musicians/bands I love come and play and my band plays the last show with my other friends. About 10 on stage for the last few songs. I open it with a solo acoustic thing (basically a soundcheck), and then close with and electric set. Other than I also am asked to join a friend on Gold Dust Woman on electric guitar during their set, so I'll be playing that too. They don't have an electric player to do some of Lindsey's parts.

Then in October I go see this band... You might have heard of them. They are called the Eagles. :D And I spend a day in St. Louis and have fun there. And I get to see Joe again live!

Then in December, I'm off to Florida for a couple of weeks.

Then the new year begins.

I love it, but I get bored without a plan and things to do and places to go.

sigh

I teach in an alternative school setting. We have a HUGE district in our state 12 High Schools like 52 middle schools. When kids get kicked out, they get to come to us. Currently the 2nd week of school we have 15 High School kids.

Today, I had a girl writing notes in her notebook to the guy sitting next to her. I had already warned her to not talk and to work. I walked by her computer station many times and had spotted her notes. All about getting high and rolling blunts. I thought by my walking by her several times she would put it away but she didn't. Finally had to call the principal to come take her notebook. She came back to class after a couple of minutes and called me a bitch. Called security to come get her and she came back to class with about 10 minutes left and was really angry. Ripped up the birthday card I gave her yesterday and started mouthing off under her breath about me. Kicked her out for the rest of the day.

And this is the start of the 2nd week of school I need a :soda:

it is very rewarding. When a student gets that first credit because someone can take the time to actually just sit with them and help them understand is awesome. Then they just take off and fly because they have experienced success.

Not all children are reachable, they have had such a hard life they are just too closed. This child today is that way. She is looking for someone to look up to and doesn't take well to discipline. I just hope she realizes that I want well for her and can not let her disrupt and talk about sex and drugs with other students.

Tomorrow is a new day.

Our school is different. We have very small classes, we have 3 full time security guards and the students do not go anywhere unless they have an escort. We just have to be careful. We get students that have committed various offenses from fighting, weapons to drugs.

This girl has complained about every rule we have so I don't know if I will be able to reach her. I will try each day as if it was a new beginning.

SC - I'm sorry you had a tough day. You are a great person to do such a challenging job. You are really making a difference.

Soda - best of luck with the new term!

It's been non-stop since I got back from holiday, hence my lack of activity around here, but I have finally moved all of my stuff in to my new place and, most importantly, got my bedroom looking nice! I am just going to relax and watch a couple of movies tonight before I head to Devon to see friends tomorrow. (I'll be there until Sunday, so unfortunately I won't be able to access The Border much during those few days - only on my phone.) Everything is going okay in general though - just busy! The new school term is looming and that means my new job will begin. I'm pretty daunted, but I'll be there from Tuesday to sort out my new classroom and get ready for the 2nd, so hopefully I'll feel better once I have everything ready.

Things aren't very good with my grandparents at the moment, so I'd really appreciate your thoughts and prayers for them - the Alzheimer's is becoming very noticeable and it's hard to watch. My Grandma opened her birthday cards on Saturday morning and two minutes later said "I haven't even read them yet!" and read them all again, coming around to give us all hugs for the second time. Things like this are now quite commonplace, and it's always a bit shocking, even as you get used to them. I treasure every moment I spend with them and we always have a lovely time together, but I just worry what will happen as time goes on. There are some difficulties already with my aunt and uncle and the way that things are dealt with... I won't go into it all now, but I do worry a bit about the road ahead and how my mum will cope, especially. In the meantime, I just want to see my grandparents as much as possible and see them happy.

Unfortunately we had some sad news from my sister's ex-boyfriend yesterday. Their dog, Jake, had to be put down due to several incidents of aggression. This is not a decision that would have been taken lightly and I know that Leon would have been devastated. Jake was not a young dog - he was a Collie mix and so active and intelligent - but he did have the odd 'nipping' incident. Apparently it became worse in recent years and, after an incident with a child that could have been very nasty, it just became too much of a risk. I am really sad, but I know that Jake lived a great life out there in the country and that he was loved so much during his life. I'm going to post one of my favourite picture of him here, because it makes me smile. I posted pics in Petmania years ago, so some of you may remember him. He was such an intelligent dog and he made us laugh so many times. Bless him.

I'm so sorry about Jake Troub. I remember from previous posts you made that he was a lovely dog. It's a pity the aggression thing had to rear it's ugly head.

And I'm sorry too about the situation with your grandparents. It's like the situation at home with Dad, but at least Mum is able to care for him still which is good. As his consultant advised us 'plenty of tea and TLC is best'. At least your grandma does realise that she GOT birthday cards even if she forgot reading them. Things like that happen Dad all the time now. And it IS hard to watch people you love losing some of their faculties and independence. I will pray for them, and for the rest of the family too.

And I just KNOW that once you get settled into your new classroom and school you will be a FABULOUS teacher! Your enthusiasm and energy is contagious!

Troub, good luck with your new job. Very sorry to hear about Jake, it's an awful decision to have to make. Also sad to hear about your grandparents. We realised Mum was losing her memory when she kept telling us the same stories on phone calls. We knew it was gone when we had all watched a superb display by the Red Arrows over Dartmouth, and 5 minutes later she said " Have the Red Arrows been?"
If your grandparents are willing to have some help, it would be worth asking them to have a check up with their GP, as early referral and intervention can improve remaining quality of life. Sounds like you may have some problems with the family accepting this though. It's a difficult time for everyone. We'll all be supporting you here.
I'm off to see my sister in Bournemouth tomorrow. She is on the waiting list for her second hip replacement, but we are hoping she can still struggle into the sea for a swim, while the weather's good.
Continue to have great support from my two wonderful sons, and joy from my cats!

Troub - I am so sorry about Jake. He truly had a very loving family.

And my mom suffered from Alzheimer's before her passing so I sympathize with you and your family. I know how difficult it is watching a love one go thru this. Not only does that person suffer but the whole family does. Please remember that it does help to share the burden and sometimes just vent. If you ever want to talk or ask a question, you can pm me and it is wonderful that you have so many friends supporting you here. I will keep your grandparents in my prayers.

GA - the above is for you too. I will keep your Dad & your mom in my prayers. Sometimes it takes a greater toll on the caregiver. You may pm me too if you want to vent or ask a question. Thank you HB. At present Dad is not bad at all. He's not aggressive and for the most part knows everyone. Just don't ask him what day or date it is. It's not that Mum has to expend a huge amount of energy caring for him, more the stress on her is from constantly having to watch him so he doesn't get lost etc. We all try to help as much as possible

Tell me about it SC! I think it's that way for most of it. But I remember one lovely teacher I knew when she was moving in a promotion to a new school that was nearer her home and the advice she gave was 'we all have bad days here, but all you can do is pick yourself up, dust yourself off and go backnin for another day'. I thought I'd jump on this morning and try to catch up.

SC, I hope that student will 'wake up' and realize that she is being given a second chance at your school. It sounds like you stayed so calm. Do you ever worry about your safety?

Troub, sorry to hear about Jake. I always wonder what makes some animals bite like that. Sounds like the right thing was done, though. Can't risk a child getting bit.

I'm so sorry to hear that your gramdmother's Alzheimer's is progressing more quickly that you hoped. I continue to keep you and your family in my thoughts.

Hope you enjoy your weekend with your friends, and good luck to you as you begin your teaching career!

I have been enjoying this week off from work, but it's gone by so fast! So far I've kept busier than I intended, doing small organizing projects around the house. Sunday Hubby and I went to Kickapoo State Park and walked a trail for a couple hours and then ate a packed lunch at one of the picnic areas. It was good to get out among the trees and nature. Wednesday I had a fun shopping day and yesterday I got my hair done. Today I'm just going to take it easy and do whatever I feel like!

My first week on the job went smoothly! I'm already exhausted from all the driving, though. I'm going to need to move sooner rather than later.

Troub, while I'm excited for you as you begin this new chapter of your life, I'm also sorry to hear about your poor grandparents. I hope that never happens to my parents but I know it's become almost commonplace. Dreamer's mother also went through this for a few years before she died. So awful. Your family is in my prayers.

Hearing about Jake breaks my heart, too. What a shame!

PM - sounds like you had a very relaxing, rewarding & rejuvenating staycation! Those can be the best! And I love it when I get some organizing done.

Soda - So sorry to hear about the commute. For you who will drive anywhere for hours without complaint, it MUST be long & tiring. Are there any nice cities halfway between Memphis & there?

sodascouts
08-24-2013, 01:14 PM
Halfway? No. Olive Branch is closer, but the commute would still be almost an hour.

There are cities halfway, but they are very small. It's more accurate to call them towns. While living in the countryside has its virtues, I want to be close to restaurants, coffee houses, entertainment venues, an airport... the towns in between are so small they don't even have movie theaters (maybe a couple restaurants, some of which are only open on weekends).

Right now I'm leaning towards Olive Branch. I have a friend there who also works at the college and we can carpool. However, it's still quite a commute.

Despite the inconvenience of location, this new college is such a vast step up from my prior position that it's well worth it. I just have to figure out how much I want to compromise when it comes to commute vs. town size. It's not even the length of the drive that bothers me - after all, as you say, I drive long distances often - but the cost of gas is killer. We're talking about $100 a week.

Houston Baby
08-24-2013, 01:43 PM
I totally did not think @ the cost, that is a lot per week. What about commuting to OB, picking up your friend & then sharing the gas cost from there. I don't know if that would be feasible or make a big difference in cost but it might be worth a try if your friend is willing.

Hope you find a happy solution. I am so happy for you regarding the better position! !

Glennsallnighter
08-24-2013, 04:01 PM
I'm really glad your first week went well Soda and I hope you find a nice place to live that is nearer the college. My commute is a 35 mile round trip daily and I spend about €80 per week (about $100) on gas, or petrol as we call it. I'd love to get a more economical car but the kids won't hear of selling 'Bluebell' and I ave heard (here as well as other places) that the focus is a great car to walk away from if you get a bang!

Not to mention the fact that I'm having a hard time moving around easily because I'm overweight, so that adds more fun to the mix. WW, how awful! How are you getting around, in a wheelchair? Is the pain from the procedure or will you have to deal with it for two months?

My mom had the bariatric surgery back in 2008. There was more after care than she'd thought as far as needing someone with her, so be prepared for that. And DON'T do like she did and have it done during cold and flu season. Immediately after the surgery, you can't take a pill or anything that will help and with not eating, it hits you hard.

WW sorry you're feeling so bad at the moment. As Soda says, take it one day at a time rather than looking at a long period of convalescence. Indulge yourself in our boys and hopefully that will help! And DO think carefully before going for the second surgery.

Honestly WW I'd be a bit hesitant to undergo surgeries so close together. Maybe you should wait a bit on the bariatric surgery unless it is urgently needed for health reasons.

I'll let WW answer this for sure, but with Mom, once you decided to have it, it was a minimum of a six month wait. She had to undergo a lot of pretesting (it was how they found her thyroid cancer) and even go to support groups. It maybe different now since there's so many variations of the surgery.

GA, so far the truck drives like a dream!

You poor thing!! My only advice is that you stay ahead of the pain. Don't wait till it's a "10" to take medication. Nip it in the bud at a "4" on the pain-level scale and your recovery will be easier.

It'll take some creative thinking, but you can use the two months to your benefit once you're out of post-surgical pain.
I'd download every book I never seem to have time to read, learn a few new computer programs, get my Christmas shopping done online, teach myself guitar -- things like that.

Hang in there, WW. You'll be up and around on crutches soon and before you know it you'll be dancing in the aisle at MSG in November!!!

Thanks, guys !!

It's easy to get down on yourself and have less than a fantastic outlook on life, but I'm trying very hard to remain positive, and looking forward to the day I can walk pain free !!

As far as the bariatric surgery goes, I'm definitely going to wait a while. I have to observe a medically supervised diet for 6 months, and I'm going to get started on it while I'm home. I have heard positive things about the sleeve, so I think that's the way to go. I've had very few medical issues, and I'd like to keep it that way !!

I have several books to read, and plenty of movies and TV to watch. In fact, HOTE sounds pretty good right now !!

Hey everyone! I'm trying my best to catch up around here, but not doing very well! Work is crazy and hopefully after this week things will get a little closer to normal. We have put in a new meter reading system and learning how to do everything plus mistakes by the meter company is keeping us all a little frazzled! This week my co worker is off on vacation, so I'm going to be even more swamped. So if you don't see me much you all know why! I've just got off the phone to my mum. I knew something was wrong; she didn't sound good at all. My grandparents aren't doing well and they had a couple of incidents this week that were heartbreaking for my mum to witness. It is not just my grandma, it's my grandad too. It really feels like we are losing them... like who they used to be is slipping away. It is so horrible and I never expected it to get to this level so quickly. I just want to hang onto them. I am worried about my mum too, as things progress and she tries to balance looking after them with full-time work. She has no husband or partner to support her, and I feel like she could really do with the support right now, and in the months ahead. The hard thing is, I know it's only going to get worse.

It's heartbreaking, Troub. Unfortunately, there are no easy answers or quick fixes. Lou, I don't even know what to say, except that I'm so sorry your family is going through this. I guess I didn't realize that it was happening with your grandpa, too. I just thought you meant that he's unable to care for your grandmother by himself. At times like this, you don't even know what to pray for. Cathy - until recently, we didn't know that it was happening to my Grandad either. He seems to have changed quite suddenly. The doctor basically diagnosed him with Alzheimer's too but, as we know, the actual diagnosis is quite tricky... it's more an educated guess, or a process of elimination. Troub, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandparents, and how quickly things have gone downhill. It may be that your Grandad has had a mini stroke to account for his deterioration - not much help, I know, but keeping his blood pressure controlled, checking he hasn't got a heart rate irregularity and that his blood sugar is ok would be useful. Your Mum must allow herself time off. Make sure your grandparents have all the benefits they are entitled to, especially attendance allowance, which can go towards professional carers who could give your Mum a break. I am thinking of you and know what you are going through. I'm so glad you had a wonderful time in Rhodes to recharge your batteries, and the challenge and rewards that your new job will bring.
I went to stay with my sister at the weekend. She needs a hip replacement and is in a lot of pain, but I am really worried about her. Her short term memory is awful and she is fixated on the pain to the extent that she spent the whole weekend repeating how bad it was, and shuffling round with moans and groans. She doesn't take painkillers, but relies on hot water bottles. It would be unfair of me to list all the things that concerned me, but the biggest is that she is acting exactly like our mother when her dementia started, and she is only 59. I will support her as much as I can, but it's a three hour drive, and after two days with her my sanity was at stretching point.
On a positive note, I was invited to a dinner tonight to mark the retirement of the consultant I worked with until two years ago. It was a lovely evening, catching up with old friends and colleagues in the nursing and medical profession. He is an avid cricket fan, and everyone had clubbed together to buy him a VIP day at one of the upcoming one day internationals between England and Australia - he was overwhelmed!
To everyone here, thanks so much for your continuing support, and to everyone facing difficulties, know that we are all here for you.

What's happening in my life........?

Well I've just come up for air from this week. I would safely say its been one of the most 'full on' weeks that I have had in years. I'm back to my own teaching job now and am doing a lot of planning/ setup in my room at work. In between taking classes.

Them I've been getting Laura started in her new secondary school. It's a bit further away from her primary and is not on a bus route so for the moment I'm the taxi! And the automatic cash machine! We were also getting her bedroom done up. Of course the painter decorator was meant to come over the summer, but there was a delay!

Oh we are also settling in our new au pair!

Chris is also back but his transition into a new class is far more predictable. He's just getting tireder in the evenings

Then to top it all Laura and I did "The Great Pink Run" today. It was a 10k run (walk, jog etc) which we did to raise money to support the family of the daughter of a colleague and friend of mine who is battling Leukaemia.

Needless to say! I am exhausted! And it's only the first week! Lol

It's going to take me a while to learn the ropes at work and to develop a decent work/life balance! Troub, I know you've been working hard just to get your classroom looking cool, and right on top of that here come the kids! Whew! Honestly, it takes a special person to be a teacher. Some of you teachers talked about starting your own thread, and I think that's a great idea. We have quite a few teachers here, and I would think it would be cool to compare notes and stuff.

I have had such a busy few days that I haven't even been able to post on my own forum!

I get up so early that when I get home, I just want to rest. I'm sure I will adapt but it is difficult.

Over the long weekend I went to a sci fi convention. It was fun but exhausting - I barely slept all weekend!

The good news is that classes are going well.

TT, this past weekend, I thought of our AC concerts as well. They put the convention to shame in terms of a good time!

Good luck to all you teachers on the new school year. I really miss teaching. As difficult as it can be at times, I think it is one of the most rewarding jobs there is. I remember how hard those first few weeks used to be. I taught preschool, so we had a lot of tears, but when we finally got a smile, it made it all worth while. I have a lot of respect and appreciation for teachers of all ages, so thank you for all you do. You are making a difference.

Well, I actually did do something yesterday. I am a member of postcard site postcrossing.com so I went down to the Rocks (Circular Quay) & met 7 other people from the site at what is called a Postcrossing meetup. They have these all the time; they seem to do a lot in Brisbane (I wouldn't go up to Brisbane for something like this; the event would have to be a bit more important.....) but we all signed the next lot of postcards we have to send & had lunch.

Yes, I had a good time & a good fish & chips lunch. I hadn't met any of them before; this was the first meetup I had been to. Unfortunately one of the ladies is very sick with cancer & is in a wheelchair so it must have been a huge effort for her to be there, especially as she came from Brisbane. :depressed:

Again, I'm sorry for my lack of activity on The Border at the moment. The first week was a whirlwind, but I'm hoping to be better this week at making sure I leave school a bit earlier. The school is pretty demanding and very specific (read: picky!) about what they want, but they are also supportive and friendly in general, so it's not a bad place to be. It's just a lot to get to grips with at first. Anyway, I have had a lovely weekend and am almost ready to settle down for a good night's sleep ahead of the new week.

Something to make you smile... I am just finalising the table groups for my children and I have named them Lion, Bear, Wolf, Buffalo and... you guessed it... Eagle! I had to. ;)

Well, what's NOT happening in my life??

First, I'll say that to show how totally vain I can be, I drove all the way to VA (over 9 hours) and stayed at a hotel just to get my hair done by my regular hairdresser so I could go to the concert with hair I could count on. I also delivered a new laptop to one of my employees. That was 8/31 and 9/01 and then I drove to Pittsburgh (4.5 hrs) to my sister's. Had dinner and loaded dirt bikes on my brand new truck and then went to Somerset, an hour back in the direction I'd just come from.

Sunday and Monday I did family things, then rushed to Mom's late Monday from my brothers to do laundry for the Seattle trip. HER WASHER STOPPED WORKING ON THE SPIN CYCLE! She tried drying them anyway and that broke the dryer, so I was up at 5:30 on Tuesday to go to my Dad's and do them there and they had their hot and cold water switched on their washer! We fixed that and I used their dryer, then headed to Baltimore, MD to catch my flight (booked before I moved to KY). Along the way I had to call in for work meeting that didn't go well and took 1.5 hours. Before leaving KY, my manager offered me an air card so I could literally work from anywhere on my vacation. Sweet. I got to Seattle in to the hotel around 11pm ET and much later when I went to bed.

I had a great time in Seattle, even though I had to work a lot and field phone calls and texts all day. The concert was so super fantastic that it was all worth it. I flew back to Baltimore and sat in construction traffic at 10:30pm for an hour to drive to VA to stay with friends. I do not miss DC-area traffic.

I went to a friend's house for a party, had a great time. Went to see old neighbors and saw my old house. I wasn't nearly as nostalgic as I would have thought.

Today, I drove back to KY, all 9 hours in one day. Listened to my beloved Steelers get their butts handed to them by the Titans as I drove. Kept track of the score of the Pirates' game where they were once again humiliated by the Cardinals (Kudos to Brooke). Just as I was thinking the day couldn't get much worse, the car in front me ran over road debris (or something flew off it) and smashed into my windshield WHILE I WAS TRAVELING 80+ MPH. I'm damn lucky to be alive. The windshield and wiper on the drivers side is 'totalled'. I managed to get it off the highway and called Geico. They didn't seem to care that I was stranded alongside an interstate three feet from traffic that was moving at 70+mph and asked a lot of stupid questions for 45 minutes before realizing I needed a tow truck (idiots). I finally got to my house about an hour ago and I very definitely realize that it could have been much worse. As it is, it will all be paid for with no deductible, and only the windshield and wiper arm were damaged. Thank God! Otherwise there are no scratches on the new truck.

I do have to say, I put 1800 miles on that new truck in ten days, and all that traveling doesn't count the flying miles to Seattle and back, plus all the walking we did while in Seattle. It goes without saying that I'm exhausted!

Soda asked me in a text message if it was all worth it, the time with family and friends, and of course our guys. HECK YEAH!

VA - I'm so glad that you have made your way back home safely after all those miles. I will put in an extra thank you tonight in my prayers that the truck incident was not worse. You are right, it could have been disastrous. Get a good night's sleep & I hope this week is a little calmer!

Troub, sounds like you are getting into the new job and the kids will benefit!

Lisa, hope Laura is settling in ok at her new school. Your schedule sounds exhausting.

I'm stuck into researching my family tree at the moment after finding some old birth and marriage certificates. On my father's side it's all in South Wales but my mother's relatives were more cosmopolitan and I have cousins in the USA, Portugal and Switzerland.

Thanks for all your kind comments about my sister. The last few times I've spoken to her she sounds much more in control. She saw her doctor for blood tests and is significantly anaemic, not really a surprise as she doesn't eat meat, however she needs her blood count to improve before her hip surgery. Lots of spinach!

I've had a lovely weekend with both boys home, and have joined a local wildlife/walking group to get me out a bit more. Boys are working on me to do a road trip to California next year!

GEF, glad your sister is hanging in there. I think I mentioned it before, maybe not, but I did a big family tree about six years ago, maybe longer. I've thought about getting back to it, since there are even more tools out there and more information. I just haven't done it!

I called all over the place this morning and no one had the windshield in stock. It's very specialized, with the word 'Ford' on it in big letters, but they all said they seldom carry any windshields in stock. The one place who makes them and sells them said they could only do it in their garage which is all the way up in Louisville, and while the insurance would have paid to tow it again, I didn't want my truck bouncing up and down on the back of a tow truck for 50 miles, so I passed. Then one of the companies I called first called me back and said they'd go get the windshield immediately. They are very close to me, down the road a short distance and then across a shopping center parking lot, and so they came over, checked the exact type of windshield, then called me later to tell me they went and got it. They actually drove it over there since it was such a short distance, then drove it back, all by 1pm. I went to the Ford dealer and they ordered the windshield wiper arm and that'll get put on tomorrow. Everyone is amazed that there is no other damage, usually debris also hits the roof or even bed of a truck, but this didn't. Before they drove the truck, we noticed that putting a finger on the outside where the object hit, glass came off the windshield, so it was a very near thing as far as coming through. I've been thanking God so often today He's probably tired of hearing me.

Yay!! The truck is fixed! New windshield, new wiper and wiper arm! Tomorrow morning the insurance guy comes to inspect the damage...I guess I can describe it for him.

Went back to work today and it didn't go too badly, considering. A co-worker asked about my vacation and mentioned that she talked to my former boss (who now works for me) and he told her that I was an Eagles groupie, that I followed them all over the place, and that I had a crush on one of them. Seriously! I didn't realize it was a 'crush', and especially at my age! I've always just thought of it as 'a definite preference'.

Just got back from the doctor's office. Seems the little spill I took in Seattle was a bit worse than I thought. On Thursday morning, we had just come out of a restaurant where we had breakfast and there was a cut out in the cement walkway I didn't see and -- wham -- down I went. :thud:
I hopped right back up and shook it off. The pain wasn't that bad and the swelling was minimal. We must have walked about 3 miles afterward and I was doing fine, but as of this morning the swelling hadn't gone down so I had it checked out today just to be sure I wasn't doing more damage. Seems I have a hairline fracture of the ankle so he gave me a removable cast (which I can only remove to shower) and meds for pain and inflammation. Thank God it happened the day AFTER the concert. Good thing I'm a tough cookie. VA and HD didn't have to tell me to "man up, Mary". I'll be good as new in a few weeks and ready to dance at MSG in November!!!

Happy Anniversary Joanie and Jesse!...I hope you two never split up for the sake of the children...

Now that's FUNNY. The children. They are four-legged, hairy and extremely spoiled!!! If we do split, he gets custody. I'll get visitation!!

Thanks for your good wishes everyone. It was a fun day. Got together with my mom, four sisters and extended family. There was NO bloodshed or hurt feelings. Always a bonus!

Happy belated anniversary HH!

OM13, have a wonderful vacation!

I'm on a week of much needed vacation at home this week. Work has just been overwhelming the last couple weeks and no time to do much of anything but work! Disgusting! lol I now appreciate the free time I had there to keep up with all the Border news before our changeover! Hopefully things will settle down in a week or two.

I went and bought a new car yesterday. I looked around over the weekend and decided on a bright red Dodge Journey. (I don't name my cars, Pm, so Ruby is safe!) The ride is so much better than my Jeep Liberty. Love it so far!

I have to take my Mom to a couple doctor appointments today, so off to town we go pretty soon.

Hope all is well with everyone and I will try to get back here tomorrow. I think I get to stay home tomorrow. :yay:

Congrats on the new wheels Brooke and hope your Mom is ok!

Enjoy your day at home tomorrow.

Well I'm smiling. I entered a radio competition last week for tix to a Glenn Miller tribute concert at the end of the month. Didn't hear who won them.......

..... Until they arrived at my home this morning!:yay:

Son has already teased me that it's the 'wrong' Glenn! But you know, Dad loves Glenn Miller and I've often listened to his music with Dad so I know and like a lot of it. Looking forward to it!

Enjoy your week off Brooke! And I hope you do get some free time to enjoy your vacation and your new car!!

And everyone seems to be getting a new vehicle here. Puts me in the car shopping mood but I guess I will hang onto my little Honda Civic for a couple more years.

Congratulations GA! Enjoy the concert!! And sounds like you have a smart son - the "wrong" Glenn. :hilarious:

There is a connection in that Glenn Frey was named after Glenn Miller.

There is a connection in that Glenn Frey was named after Glenn Miller.

That's what I was referring to when I said " spelling" namesake, as Glenn said that he had 2 n's in his name because his mother liked Glenn Miller. I don't know if he meant that she actually named him Glenn after Glenn Miller or that she just spelled Glenn that way, because she liked him.

TT, I can't believe little Lucas is a year old! He's been through a lot, but he seems to be doing well now, thank God!

I really have to wonder at my sanity for taking this job! We had a working group meeting at the local office this past week. My company has a small office very near my new apartment, actually, but I usually work at the customer site which is about a half hour away. I met some new people and saw some others for the first time in a while and in individual conversations they all said that I have the worst job on the whole program or wondered how I could handle the job, or as most of them said, said they'd never be able to do it or want to try. I'd say it's what I get paid the big bucks for, but I still haven't seen the big raise show up... I'm thinking I might have a word with my boss this week. I don't want to make it seem like I'm all about the $$, but I have Eagles tickets to pay for!

I just returned his halloween custome...too small
Kiara is trying to get him to us so our son can meet him.
I swear mike is only sleeping here.
He came home cause he was in the wedding party .
Jahh dropped him at campus since the couple is getting marrried at the chapel but
It was right in the middle of nova football and tailgaiting .lol
So we r going to try tomorrow, when
he only has ten things to cram in his day.

TT, hope you have had a wonderful evening. It sounds terrific fun.

Austin, hope the ENT guys can sort you out. We're all thinking of you.

I've had a great day today. My cousin Kate from Portugal and her husband Tommy were invited to a wedding tomorrow very close to where I live. I invited them to stay and picked them up from the station. We've had a lovely evening looking at old family photos and tomorrow I'm going to show them some of our beautiful local countryside.

Later in the evening I got a rather mixed phone call from the ex...still with his 20 something girlfriend but for whatever reason feeling sorry for himself. Hmmm - most of my friends say block his number, but there needs to be some contact for business purposes.

He is such a ball of energy.
Lunch was mashed potatoes with spinach and chicken.
well he ate the chicken himself but I wore as much or more of the veggie potato mixture as he did. Then it was banana baby yougart which he LOVED.
He really was so very good. Played , sang, danced just had losts of fun.
Every phone he finds he picks up and says Hello into it.
I bought him a new book, Pete the cat and the pete the cat doll who as one red chuck
taylor shoe and one blue. He loved the stuffed cat and I sang him the story three times while he danced and clappped his hands.:yay:
we took a walk in the stroller which made him fall asleep . He wouldnt keep his sunglasses on and the fourth time he took them off and tryed to chuck them out the stroller I said to the sky Kiara forgive me and put the glasses away.

Just thought I'd check in as I haven't been here very much recently. Life has been a bit difficult for me recently, with family illness and problems. It's been a stressful time, and still having my own health problems(ongoing from the stroke I had last year) hasn't helped.

I'm just getting around to reading all the threads for the History of the Eagles shows. From all the reviews it sounds like it's an awesome show! and the Borderers who've been have had a great time. I'm jealous guys:jealous:

I hope that the Eagles will bring the show over to the UK next year. If they do, I hope to be able to get to one or two shows. I'd have loved to be able to get over to the US and see my friend in Dallas in October, as the Eagles are playing there on the night before my birthday. But it's not to be I'm afraid. :weep: So I'll have to try to be patient and wait for UK shows.

I miss my darling Will :heart:and long to see him again & hear him play. It's been too long - 2 years - since I've seen him.

Please keep writing your great reviews, and give me lots of detail about the shows, so I can imagine that I'm there, until I can get to really be there.

Thanks!

I'm doing Transport Management at Aston Uni, Birmingham. Drank more in the last three days than I have in about three months, but I'm usually quite reserved and timid so the beer's helped me settle in no end. The other advantage of coming here is that it's about 95% certain that the Eagles will stop off here if they ever come across the Atlantic on HOTE. :blueblob:

It's 'non-essential' federal government workers. Nearly all our teachers who don't teach for private schools are employed at the state and/or county levels.

Fortunately, I'm a contractor on a fully-funded contract, so it's just us and the active military at the office.
