View Full Version : Timothy Collaborations

There was some discussion about Crosby, Stills and Nash down in the Cheap Talk and Wine threads, which led me to this, which is fascinating -

http://www.allmusic.com/artist/timothy-b-schmit-mn0000604940/credits -

everything that Timothy has been credited on. Keep in mind that many of these are re-issues, but still, so cool. We also know that he was not credited on Twisted Sister and Poison, haha!! Frankly I think this deserves it's own thread called "Timothy Collaborations" or similar so we could discuss it more and maybe listen to some of these random songs we have never heard and see if we can hear his voice. I don't know how to start a new thread, and, I would want to make sure there is interest within the TBS crowd.

If you go back to the main page of the TBS forum, underneath where it says 'let it ride with TBS' you will see a button called New Thread. If you like I will start it for you or one of the other Tim fans can start it. Or just start it yourself if you wish!

Cool, thank you TimFan and FP!

I listened to the recorded version of Toto's I Won't Hold You Back Now, and you can totally hear him in the chorus. I think we have a live concert version in here somewhere, but you can hear him more in the recorded version.

This is a great article on this topic that I'm sure was posted a while back. I love a knowledgeable interviewer.

The one I am most familiar with is Rikki Don't Lose That Number by Steely Dan (he may have done more but I am sure about this one). Compare his backing vocal with Michael McDonald's on Peg by the same band which is very distinctive & instantly recognisable. I wouldn't say that about Tim on this song.

There is also Glenn's Some Kind Of Blue & again it isn't that easy to hear Tim in it.

Love TBS on this collaboration with the Beach Boys and this clip shows him in headphones (he always looks gorgeous in headphones). Catch the smile at 2.30! Unfortunately the sound quality isn’t that good although his vocal is absolutely perfect on the finished song and swells with emotion.

Thanks, MC. Tim comes across so well in interviews, so grounded and unassuming, giving time to this guy's ideas, etc.

Thought the interviewer was a bit anorak-y. And why is it when they finally spell TBS's name right, they almost always get Glenn's wrong?

I love listening to his version of Caroline No. Every time I learn he's been a backup vocalist on a song, I always have to immediately go listen to it again. Honestly, his voice is so pure and rich, it gives me the chills sometimes. He could sing the instructions to using my camera and I'd melt.

Cannot imagine what it must feel like to have a voice like his. He's a rare, fine wine, Timothy is.

Totally agree LTF!!

Oh my gosh, I just noticed from that list Stacey Q! Do you remember "Two of Hearts"? That was a huge song when I was in high school! Will have to check out the ones that TBS is on. That is some serious 80s girl pop like Expose, the Cover Girls, and Shannon. Love it! Our boy is extremely versatile. Oh yes.

Thanks so much for posting that MC. I didn't know he hung out with David Cassidy! That was a great interview. Notice he didn't name Randy as the member of Poco he replaced. I just heard I Can See Everything on my I-pod today. I love that song!

MaryCalifornia

Yeah, too funny, "the guy I replaced." He probably gets tired of mentioning Randy in ALL of his interviews re: Poco AND the Eagles! And, I love those throwaway comments like, "Oh yeah, I used to hang out with David Cassidy. I forgot about him....haven't seen him for a while." What a life. I REALLY hope Timothy writes an autobiography. I think his career is just fascinating. I hope all our guys write autobiographies. Timothy has a great, unique voice, but so do millions of professional singers. I think the reason he sings on so many others' songs and albums is that people just like him, mainly because he is a babe, and I'm being serious. Those who have seen him on stage love him and want him to succeed, and gave him work when he needed it in the 80s and 90s. And his connections with his record labels helped, but still...he is quite the specimen.

I sat out several years ago to try to collect everything on this list, anything Timothy has been on--- no easy task but I've got quite the vinyl collection of stuff from the list tho. It's fun going to album shows and hunting these things down. I'm glad I've always loved to read liner notes from way back when, I had a head start before I ever had an actual list to go from.

It was a very 80's video. I got quite a laugh out of the hairdo's of the 2 ladies sitting at the bar in the first minute or so. I was never able to get my hair to stick straight up like that :hilarious:

The ICTYW clip is from an old TV sitcom called "Throb" which aired from '86-'89. Hard to believe it actually lasted that long. It was about a record production company so it makes sense that they would have had actual performers on and aren't we lucky Timothy was one of them?!?

SilverMoon

The show aired from 1986 to 1988. I have seen the episodes in which Timothy appears. As I said before in this thread, he appears in three episodes. I wanted to post the episodes some time ago, but I could only find a German dubbed version on YouTube.

I’ll post the videos in the "Timothy’s videos" thread.

Thanks, VoL and SM. I can't believe he was in three episodes! I can't believe the show was on the air for 3 years while I was in high school and I never heard of it. This was really in the middle of Timothy's "hustling" decade (his word, from HOTE). I think the 80s were really a confusing time for successful professional musicians from the 60s and 70s who were basically hippies. Henley does a nice job of addressing this in the doc.

In the History of the Eagles documentary, he mentions singing for those two bands. He says it was more like screaming, and that he wasn't credited for his work. He didn't mention any other hair metal bands!

In the link Dreamer posted above, in the Guest Appearances section, it mentions Poison's 1993 album Native Tongue. So, if anyone has access to that album, listen to all of the songs and see if you can tell us if you hear Timothy!! Has anyone had a chance to listen to a new Diana Krall's album, Wallflower? (or maybe this was mentioned already in some other thread?) If not, I strongly recommend it to you, my fellow Timothy lovers :-) Among other songs, there are two very interesting ones: Desperado, and I Can't Tell You Why. The latter one caught my ear, as I heard Timothy's harmonies!

Here's the link to the album on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O33e-z_ZbAU, you might start from 14:28 first, and then continue with the rest. Enjoy! :D

I'll have to check that album out - I hope the songs Timothy contributes to are available on iTunes!

Thanks, Irga! I did put this in the "Covers of Eagles Songs" thread a couple of weeks ago, but it definitely belongs here. People love that song, and I do think it is because of the voice singing it!!

Here's an updated link to just ICTYW - the other has been taken down. It's a beautiful version.

'Tis too, tjh532

I noticed a live solo version from Tim in the margin.

I'm not sure when it's from.

I'll post it in the right topic too, if anybody wishes to comment.

I Can See Everything is one of Timothy's old Poco tunes.

One of my, girl singer favourites, Judie Tzuke did a nice version too;

Z, Wynonna' s version is very nice, but can't compare to Timothy' s rendition:smitten:, imo. But then it's probably not fair to take my word for it. Nobody's gonna top Timothy' s version of anything with me. ;-)
