It's a year ago today he lost his wife in a terrible way. The fact that he's still on his feet after all he's been through says a great deal about Randy's strength.

Yes, I was thinking about that this morning, he has come through a lot. I pray that he continues to push through the rough spots and remembers all the good times he has had!

It's encouraging to see a recent photo of him smiling with that twinkle in his eye, even though he does look thin. This guy has endured so much loss and has been through so much. I hope he knows he has lots of fans who are rooting for him.

I'd love to know more about it myself! Randy must have been a teenager here, but then he always looked young. His expression is pure sweetness and he's doing that nervous thing with his hands we've seen him do in later photos.

Meisner must be German for cutie pie.

I was thinking late 60s too (maybe early Pogo/Poco) but after looking at photos from that time, his hair was longer. I'd love to know the story behind this picnic photo! Maybe it could be as early as 1966 or '67. I guess we'll just have to be content to savor the cuteness.

I would have said the same thing NMB, but after extensive study  I think his five o'clock shadow looks the same in both pictures. And the little piece of hair poking out beside his beauty mark looks the same as does the feathered piece at his ear. His bangs of course are different but that may be because he brushed them back a bit after a long day and he needed a smoke at the time.
It would help if the cig shot was not black and white too.

Reviewing this picture again, it reminds me of that school photo NMB posted earlier. His hair was dark and short then. So my guess is that he's about 15 here. Funny how when he moved to California his hair looks blond. Was it the California sunshine or is it possible he lightened it on purpose? It becomes dark again when he joins Poco.

Ok, here are my thoughts. I always figured the bottom photo was a close-up from his Meisner, Swan & Rich photo shoot or maybe a little earlier from his Poco Legacy days. He looks a little older than the top pic, and his hair is styled a little differently. So I say no, not from the same session, even if it's a similar time period.

I imagine it was a conservative community in the early 60s. Weren't sideburns considered uncouth, like long hair? The pic you posted is from Randy's Poco days. This is one of the Randman's high school pics:

Aww, what a cutie! He had a sweet face early on. What a great find!:D

For some reason, I thought the photo I posted was a school picture. That clears up the hair color confusion I had. I still maintain he looks very young in the picnic photo, though.

As an aside, I had a Randy dream last night. Some unreleased songs from the 80s were discovered and I was listening to them on cassette. One of them was an upbeat, fun song called "Sea of Love." Go figure!

That's cool! Are you a songwriter? I hear original songs in my dreams sometimes but I don't remember them when I wake up - not enough to transcribe anything I mean. Very frustrating 'cause some of them are good.

No, not even. The closest I've come is singing little ditties to my kids when they were babies; I'm not even sure if the melodies were original. When I woke up from that dream, the tune was still in my head, and I thought about trying to jot down some notes about it, but I was too tired and fell back asleep. Of course, now it's forgotten!:sigh:

Wow, good work on finding the dates and places, D.

Is it unrealistic, am I living in a fool's paradise, am I building castles in the air to think that *maybe* there's a tiny spark of hope that Randy could make a guest appearance at the Eagles' Classic West show? He may or may not be able to play or sing anymore, but he could shake a maraca or rap a cowbell.

It's been said that Randy's mic wasn't turned on at the Rock 'n Roll HOF "jam" performance.

But then... maybe that would be too sad, after all.

Delilah
03-31-2017, 05:05 PM
Thanks, NMB.

As far as Randy being at the Classic West concert, I don't even allow myself to hope. How thrilling it would be though, for him to walk on stage, give a wave, and maybe say a few words about Glenn? I bet hearing the applause from devoted, knowledgeable fans would do him a world of good.

It's sad to know it's been almost 10 years since this talented man has performed on stage. But of course, his health and well-being are far more important than meeting the demands of his fans.

I've pondered who had the tougher job in the Eagles when performing on stage...the bass player or the drummer? Both sang leads and both had critical background vocals...while keeping the rhythm section going at the same time.

OT: it's strange how there were a lot of singing drummers in the 70s but you hardly ever see it nowadays. Perhaps it's a reflection of declining musicianship in general.

NightMistBlue
04-25-2017, 10:10 AM
Do we have any bass players here among us? I wonder if this little clip is representative of Randy's playing style in general - specifically, I'm wondering if it was typical of him (or bassists in general?) not to use the pinky on their left hand.

Guitarists use all four fingers, and occasionally the thumb gets involved too, if your hands are big enough to wrap around the neck, like the notoriously limber Jeff Beck.

I think you're onto something there. You don't hear a lot of dueling guitar solos anymore or even just guitar solos except for some country music. But maybe I'm out of the loop.

NightMistBlue
04-25-2017, 05:21 PM
It's not just us. I remember Sheryl Crow saying she turned to country music because it's the only place you can still hear guitar solos.

I've also noticed that more challenging music - whether it be Yes, Rush, Steely Dan - which used to be the mainstream, is now sometimes referred to (affectionately) as nerdy. It's now seen as unusual to be intelligent and proficient in your craft. Idiocracy, here we come.

Delilah
04-25-2017, 06:16 PM
Nah, that stuff was always nerdy. Just kidding!! Esp. re: Steely Dan

NightMistBlue
04-26-2017, 09:49 AM
Were the Dan always considered nerdy? I'm going OT, perhaps I should pose this question in the Other Bands section.

I was watching Donald Fagen's instructional DVD last night. He breaks down the structure of a few of his songs, including "Peg" which was a massive radio hit back in the day, you couldn't escape it. Same thing with "Deacon Blue" - these were jazzy tunes with challenging arrangements. I was a little kid when these songs were popular, and I loved them. It never occurred to me that it was too adult or off-putting in some way.

But I digress. How 'bout that Randy! Man, he's great. Here's a rare photo of him playing a black Hagstrom, just a few months before he left the Eagles - I'm estimating summer of '77. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/69/10/62/691062882c2170994d659310228d7be8.jpg

As I said, I was only kidding. I heard SD a lot growing up (due to having older siblings) but I was a kid and hardly paid attention to things like line-ups, albums, production, street cred or anything like that. Please don't post a new topic, "Delilah posits that Steely Dan had a nerdy reputation, do you agree?" I readily admit I know nothing.

Here's a photo from the early 2000's or so of Randy and the World Classic Rockers in front of the White House. Rosilee St. Nicholas, the lovely singer in the green & white dress, said they were given a special tour and had a great time. She kept in touch with Randy via phone after they both left WCR, sharing recipes and talking about their dogs. She describes him as a sweet, regular guy with a huge talent. A humble man.

They have since divorced, but yes they were together for many years. The Los Angeles Times did a story about the couple in the early 90s. There's nothing Randy-related, it was before WCR. St. Nicholas had a band called Wolf.

The "surprised" photo is from Randy's appearance on the Merv Griffin show in August 1982. Just putting this out to the Universe again: we sure would like to see the video of Randy's performance on this show! He did "Playing in the Deep End."

I'm dating myself (again) but IIRC, for musical guests Merv's "interview" with them usually consisted of him standing alongside the singer, exchanging a few pleasantries, then having the singer introduce the band and/or the next song.

But apparently this particular episode of Merv was all musical guests, including I believe Natalie Cole and Karla Bonoff. So who knows if the usual format held.

According to that Reelin in the Years website, the interview lasted 2:42 minutes, so you're probably right about the usual format. I sure hope they release that to another company or allow it in a DVD somewhere! Randy also performed "Never Been in Love."

Unfortunately the Reelin in the Years Production Co. holds the rights to this Randy's video clip (maybe the whole episode, too). Their intent is to license it out to documentary makers, etc. They have made it clear it is not available to fans or the general public.

Oh my gosh. That would be so epic to see. Not many people back in the day (August 3, 1982) had VCR's or Betamax, so I guess we shouldn't get our hopes too high.

I wonder how difficult it would be for Randy's people (if he has people) to put together a video retrospective. I suppose they'd have to get licensing clearance from all the companies who own the tv shows he appeared on.

Carl has been crossing my mind - his birthday is coming up on Thursday. You might want to check out Brian Wilson's Facebook on that day; he always posts something about his brothers on their birthdays.

FYI: I'm not a nut, I promise ;-) I grew up with the Beach Boys' music and regard them as special. But not to the point where I'm hunting down where they live and going thru their trash.

Did you know that Randy (when he was a solo artist) opened for the Beach Boys quite a few times? I wonder if they socialized at all.

Me too, moved to California from East Coast while still a kid, used to play my older brother's ( who played bass in his own garage band lol) 45 record Surfer Girl all the time!!

I would imagine Randy hung out with the BBs they were all pretty social back then. Jan & Dean were also popular. Had a huge crush on Jan Berry.

Carl Wilson got married young like Brian and then married Dean Martin's daughter who was with him until the end. Carl was a real sweetheart, his passing was just heartbreaking.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I moved some photos that were recently posted in a very old thread called 'Celebration of Former Eagles Hotness'.

The picture of Randy and subsequent comments were moved here. The picture of the Eagles that was posted and its accompanying posts have been moved to the 'Celebration of Eagles Hotness' thread in the Eagles forum.

The old thread that had recently been revived after 6 years was redundant and was causing confusion about the proper thread(s) to post the pictures, so I went ahead and deleted it.

Thanks, Dreamer.

If anyone was wondering, that old thread was created before we had separate subforums for each former Eagle. Years ago, we didn't have enough member interest to support different subforums for each. Those days are gone, happily, with so many Randy fans especially! Hence, the redundancy of the old thread.

If you scroll down the list of options on the right you will find one called BBCode for message boards. This has the [img] text wrapped around it. Try that & again remove the s from the http part.

Margaret Gerrand created this brilliant meme but I'm still flummoxed on how to post images here [sigh].

Ever since I got the mobile app for Imgur I haven’t been able to share pics. Which is why I stopped using it, and I don’t have time to figure it out.

Anyway, I appreciate the meme but I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t get it at first. But now I realize it was just about Randy, not the whole band.

Do you want me to put it in my imgur account & post it, as I know how to do it?

Alternatively here are the photo posting guidelines which explain how to use the BCCode or image URL.

Thank you, FP! When you say fifth option, are you referring to the "embed post" thing? Thanks.

When you go to 'view & edit post' you have the options next to the photo for how you wish to copy it.
1. Image Link (https, which I think is what you used)
2. Direct Link (the url, which won't show the image either)
3. Markdown Link (for reddit)
4. HTML (website/blogs)
5. BBCode (message boards)
6. Linked BBCode (message boards) includes the url

Thanks FP. Back when Imgur worked for me and I could access these options, I would use the “direct link” by clicking on it, then click on the image icon in the toolbar above the comment box. I’d paste the url there (first deleting the “http/:” that automatically shows up). It was all fine until I downloaded the app.

I have an article that uses the photo too. It's from early 1986 and it references that Blondie Chaplin would be joining them on tour; however it was before Bernie Leadon joined their ranks.

I'm trying to think of a way to share the article without violating community standards regarding copyrighted articles. If I knew the newspaper that it was originally published in, perhaps I could link to that. The author is David Surkamp.

NightMistBlue
02-05-2019, 02:13 PM
Way OT: turns out David Surkamp is a musician himself; he founded what some consider the first prog band Pavlov's Dog. He says he got sick of playing for awhile and became a music journalist for about 10 years. He mainly wrote for the St. Louis Chronicle.

LOL I actually didn’t pay much attention to the date, just the venue. He looks so sweet in his sweater and plaid shirt that it doesn’t jive with his storming off the stage that night. That’s why I was wondering about it.

According to this reference he played there March 11-12, 1981.
http://bottomlinearchive.com/chronology_1981

Also this Billboard article refers to the incident and credit is given to Randy for the creation of a new record company involving pop artist/songwriter Desmond Childs.

The Deston story goes back to 1980, when Childs and Simone first crossed paths. “We owe it all to [former Eagle] Randy Meisner,” Simone recalls. “We were part of the crowd that came to see [Meisner] at the Bottom Line, but he got mad and walked offstage. So we ended up at a bar around the corner, where Desmond’s publisher introduced me to him. I was a [Desmond Child And] Rouge fan, and Desmond was very much a recording artist then.”

Pssst......ya'll also do know that, before flying with the Eagles, Meisner was bass player for Rick Nelson, right? (Yes, that Rick Nelson.....Ozzie & Harriet's second child who became a teen idol in the 50s & wrote that beautiful song "Garden Party" in 1971 after thinking that he was being booed off the stage at Madison Square Garden during a "Rock & Roll Revival" type of show (the fact was that the cops were trying to arrest some drunk & disorderly patrons and the crowd actually were booing the cops.....not Nelson).

Delilah!!!! That chronology says the Bottom Line show was simulcast on radio!! There must be a recording. Has to be!! And did you notice who was there several nights later: Tracy Nelson?! Surely not Rick's daughter.

Very interesting story about Desmond Child too. I remember him when he was "and Rouge" - he had long, flowing hair like Peter Frampton.

The audience apparently thought Randy and his band weren't performing very well. They booed and shouted things and sweet Randy got upset. He left the stage and went someplace private to collect himself. Then he went back on stage and resumed the show, from what I understand.

I’m not too optimistic about the recording still being around, although it would be great to hear (at least I think so :fear:). When I saw Tracy Nelson’s name, I wondered the same thing, but I think she would have been a young teen at the time; when was Square Pegs on TV? That newspaper clipping you’re referring to sounds familiar.

Anyway, this article provides some detail on what happened that night. It seems there were some issues with the sound system as well as Randy having a rough night.

Hi Luvy!! Mama Meisner made shirts for her son because - you may have noticed this yourself - he has very long arms, so much so he had trouble finding shirts that fit. He often rolls up the sleeves. By all accounts, Mrs. Meisner was a capable woman who loved to cook and sew, and adored her family.

Someone who used to occasionally do some farm work for Randy's father told me that when an Eagles song would come on the radio, Herman Meisner would stop what he was doing to listen. Proud papa.

You may know that Herman Meisner lost a hand due to an accident - with farm machinery I believe. He wore a hook on the missing hand. When this guy who did some work for him asked if Randy got his musical talent from him, Mr. Meisner kind of chuckled, raised up his hook and said, “I don’t think so.”

There are photos of Glenn wearing a Long Run t-shirt.

Yes, I forgot, I have seen pictures of him wearing a LR t-shirt that said "Eagles - The Long Run Tour"(or something like that).
I have never seen pictures of them in HC t-shirs though. If anyone has, please post a picture.

Love Randy in the On the Border t-shirt. And here's another to celebrate the anniversary week of the album. I call this one the 'Randy shirt' ...

Wonder if he went there whenever he was in town!

Interesting observation about the HC T-shirts. Glenn could usually be counted upon to sport an album / tour T-shirt at some point, so if he wasn't wearing them... maybe they were all really ugly? lol

They were so mega-successful at that point, maybe they didn’t need to promote themselves anymore! Or someone told them it was cheesy to wear your own band’s t-shirt 😄

Nice promo ad! Do you know which publication this was in, NMB? It’s interesting to see the songs that were being promoted- I don’t think they were all released as singles, were they?

I can ask the person who found it what publication it's from. OT: I have a rather extensive collection of rock magazines from the 1980s that I can't bear to part with, despite having no room to store them! I'm thinking I should go through them sometime and see if I can find any ads or reviews of Randy's solo records.

Good eye for spotting the song titles! I too wonder if they were in the running to be released as singles. "Trouble Ahead" may have done well.

Oh definitely go through them! No telling what you might come across. The only music mag I regularly subscribed to then was Rolling Stone. Those issues are long gone.

“White Shoes” may have been a (minor) hit too, had it been released. I don’t think the title track would have charted though.
