No, the title track is too long and slow for Top 40; maybe it could have been a featured album track on rock radio. Jackson Browne's "Hold Out" album was doing quite well at the time, maybe that could have lifted Randy's profile a bit.

Well, the answer about which publication is more interesting than I expected: it's from a New Orleans music magazine called Wavelength, February 1981 issue. The bit that got cut off was an ad for Warehouse Records, and also mention of Randy appearing at Old Man River's on February 10.

see page 12: https://scholarworks.uno.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.c om%2F&httpsredir=1&article=1003&context=wavelength&fbclid=IwAR0ZD2iWyy-l2gHz_p1cWxoc3IgpQeI7WYz0cSk-6zetM-jwmPBTDmNorrc

Cool pic! I don’t think I’ve seen Randy wearing that shirt while sporting a beard. Definitely a rare one.

My guess is they are singing Best of My Love. JD was known to join them for that song. There may be footage of the 1976 Houston Summit concert on YT where they are performing it together. Unfortunately the audio quality is not that great. If you have Spotify or Amazon Music, the concert is there and the sound quality may be better.

My super-smart friend Diana found the 1972 yearbook for Westlake School for Girls, near Studio City, CA. The Eagles are said to have performed their first paying gig as a band here. I don't imagine they got paid very much. If you click on the first link, the heading for the page is "Coffee Houses and Dances" which, I dunno, just doesn't sound like a lucrative gig for some reason! All for the experience though.

Dear Randy is so modest, he won't promote himself. Once when he was being interviewed about one of his old bands, The Poor, the journalist asked if they were a good live band and Randy wouldn't even admit to that. Modest to a fault, as they say.

Nice review of Randy’s show. I can’t say I’m surprised his voice wasn’t in optimal shape. His performance apparently happened the evening before, March 1, 1981 which was a Sunday. He had a concert on Saturday in Denver, Colorado, which was recorded live and later released on CD. The evening before that he appeared on the TV show “Fridays” which I’m assuming was live b/c of the flub of his name by the host (?). I’m not sure where “Fridays” was based - L.A. or NYC? Anyway, that was a lot of traveling and performing in a short period of time.

Thank you so much NMB for sharing these treasures. It’s heartwarming to read about Randy’s contributions to charity and his honors like getting a key to the city.

Hello, JLE and welcome to the Border! One of the things I love the most about Randy is that he's shy. And I honestly cried when i read that he was recently singing in a concert. I was worried that he completely stopped singing. His voice is so lovely. The 1977 Capitol Centre concert is on YouTube and i watch it every chance i get. No matter if its the 47th time watching it, When Randy hits that high note in take it to the limit, I get chills.

Appreciate the welcome! I rediscovered my love for the Eagles during the Pandemic and found myself drawn to Randy; the man, the voice & the songs, in particular. You might say I'm a little obsessed (my husband sure thinks so!!). I ended up buying the History of the Eagles DVD set, mostly so I could own that awesome Capital Centre Concert from '77. I watch it all the time and you're so right, I also get goosebumps when Randy sings TITTL. I'm always on the lookout for other DVD's of the group with Randy in it (not interested in them after he left), I own the broadcast DVD from 73/74 and a bootleg DVD of a concert from '76 in Houston. All are enjoyable, I have an Eagles dance party every night and get some steps in while I do it!! So happy to be among Randy fans, I agree with all of the sentiments expressed here about this sweet, wonderful and talented soul.

There's nothing wrong with being obsessed . I've been a fan of the Eagles for a long time. My fascination with any artist ebbs and flows like ocean waves, like back in June i was listening to a lot of Foreigner, and I love me some Journey. However the one constant band that holds a place in my heart is the Eagles. Sorry if I got all poetic on you  I'm a writer and I do that sometimes, lol.

Journey is my other favorite besides the Eagles, I've realized I have a preference for high tenor voices a la Randy and the beyond fabulous Steve Perry!

Nice pic JLE. Hope you enjoy this one. I have a funny Randy related story (at least to me ). I didn’t know where to post so I figured why not share with a pic? Who’s complaining right? So, when I cook, I usually put on my Spotify Daily Mix 1 which is chock full of Eagles and solo Eagles and associated artists. I only have free version on phone, so the Daily Mix plays in shuffle, if you are not familiar with Spotify. Anyways....So it’s playing the songs all is good and then it played John Parr “Naughty Naughty“ (oh behave!) hey sometimes some oddballs get in the mix what can I say?? But the funny thing is right after that it went to sweet lil Randy singing “Save the Last Dance for Me”. What a seque!

OMG, that is so funny! I am a child of the 80's so I totally remember that John Parr song! But I absolutely love Randy's version of "Save the last dance..." wasn't that on his 1978 album? I know it's not a highly regarded release, but I enjoyed several songs from it, he could basically sing the phone book and sound fantastic to me! And I appreciate the info re: that pic I posted of Randy is from before the Eagles, wow! He does look awfully young there, those sweet cheeks (I mean the face, of course, right? Although if you watch the video of Randy singing "Tryin" from the Eagles central park concert, there are some other cheeks that are pretty sweet, too wink wink)

I agree with NMB that this looks like it was cropped from a picture that was taken near his apartment. I had assumed it was taken in 1974 or early 1975 thereabouts, as his ex-wife has claimed it was here where she helped him write TITTL. But I guess he could have been living in that same apartment since the 60s.

Great pics JLE & KingWalsh! I must admit, I also am partial to his hair long, but long or short he's just adorable. I was image surfing & came across this pic of Randy on Pinterest. It looks to be a still shot from one of his Heart's On Fire performances (?), but in watching those videos I've never seen a close-up like this. It seems too clear for something that's been enlarged from video though. Anyway, I just love seeing him like this, huge smile, having a blast. He's got that sweet shy side, but he can turn that other side on too that likes to just let go & rock out. It makes me so happy watching that side of his personality come out. It's so cute. If I'm having a blue day, he can always lift my heart & make me smile. I so regret never having seen him perform live.

He's got that sweet shy side, but he can turn that other side on too that likes to just let go & rock out. It makes me so happy watching that side of his personality come out. It's so cute. If I'm having a blue day, he can always lift my heart & make me smile. I so regret never having seen him perform live.

Oh, totally agree, he always makes me smile! Love this pic, I call this his "velour" stage, cause he was into wearing those velour track suit jackets ha ha. He rocked them, of course! He can make you feel so many different emotions with his voice it's amazing. Extremely underappreciated IMHO. But not here on this thread....Randy rules!

Haha, true! I kinda dig the velour though. It makes me wanna hug him all the more. LOL You gotta be comfy when you're rockin' out, right? LOL You said it perfectly, he really can take you on a journey of emotions. TITTL is my all time favorite, but so many of his songs are like old dear friends who have seen me through a lot. Sometimes it hard to put into words why a certain artist speaks to you. He just reaches me. He's very special. It's like he wears his heart on his songs, to twist a phrase. You can see the emotion & joy on his face when he's performing. Sad & lonely or sassy, I love it all. No matter where I am, I feel like I'm home when I play his music. He just fits so perfectly into "that place". His musicianship & voice added so much to the early Eagles sound. I'm so happy to have found a place to hang where others appreciate him as much as I do. Love to you sweet Randy! You are a doll & a true gem!

(This is a funny memory. I was 19 & still living at home when HC came out (I imagine all of y'all doing the math right now LOL) & I played TITTL so much my mom would bang on my door & say...can't you play something else besides that "Ticket" song? LOL... I would say...Moooooom, it's "Take It, not Ticket! And she would say...ya ya whatever. LMBO  Sometimes I would turn it on just to see how long it would take her to start banging. I love that song so much. Even more so now honestly. I can't go one day without listening to it.)

That montage is fantastic....you did a great job, wow, I love it! You said it so well, when I listen to Randy, I'm home. That's it exactly and I didn't figure this out til a year ago! I always loved the Eagles but now I realize, I love the Eagles only when Randy was with them. Nothing against Tim, but the timbre of their voices is very different even though they both sing high tenor. There is just something about Randy's voice, it can't be duplicated. I am the opposite, I love TITTL so much that I want to keep it special so I ration the times I listen to it lol! I watch their videos every night and have a dance party and it's so fun. Hard to dance to Hotel Cali though ha ha ha. That's far from my favorite song of theirs, anyway. Randy's not perfect, no one is, but there is just something about him that makes me want to hug him and protect him, you know? But he could absolutely stick up for himself when he had to (Glenn knows this all too well and so does Poco lol). I love all of his music, some are favorites and some of the material isn't the best, but if Randy is singing it, he elevates it to a whole other level. IMHO, he is the golden Eagle, the special sauce, the secret weapon. And then he smiles and slays everyone who sees it!

Thanks so much JLE & Dreamer! I'm so glad you like it!

JLE, I couldn't agree with you more. I too lost track of Randy for a long while, but I never forgot him. The music was still there. I did get TLR album, but none of the others that eventually followed. I do like a couple songs on TLR, but I missed hearing that signature tone that Randy brought to the mix. IMO they were never as great after he left. I watch the '77 concert a lot & I just can't imagine what OOTN would be without that crazy high harmony he belts out. But it's the little gems too that are just as amazing like on the song TBOML. At the very end you can hear him sing this little...Whoa woah yeah...with that control he has with his voice. My heart flips every time I hear it. Nobody can do it like him! He really does not get his just dues. Do I like every song? I admit no, but he always gives his best & I can't deny the passion & sincerity behind them. It's sad that he was treated the way he was & that he felt he had to leave, but I'm a huge believer in everything happening for a reason. Not everything worked out, there were some things he wished turned out different, but he never set out for fame & fortune. It was all about the music. Having strong songs that people loved & stood the test of time, which they have. He's humble, but I'm sure he's very proud of that. You only have to watch his videos to see that he was happy doing what he loved. I remember watching those videos when I first rediscovered him & I was so blown away. I was like...dang Randy, you can get down & rock lol. It was so different from when he used to stand in the background with the Eagles. His personality just blossomed & I was a goner all over again.

I just love this pic of Randy. He's more mature & so hunky with a little more meat on his bones. I just wanna wanna give him a huge hug.

Eyes for the Meis, this is a lovely post. Randy adds that special touch to so many Eagles songs. His bass playing was understated but sublime. It was perfect for songs like “Lyin Eyes.” How awesome it would have been to be at that ‘77 Capital Center concert! I agree he doesn’t always get his just dues. I’m grateful for the HOTE doc b/c otherwise he and Bernie would probably have been forgotten by the masses. And I loved him with latter-day Poco! I wish that could have worked out better.

but...what really made me stop & think...what the heck?...is this pic. I'm familiar with it & know it's been posted before. I've seen several different versions of it, but today is the very first day I ever noticed that Randy is holding the Queen of Diamonds! And...this dawns on me the same day I happened to find the ace pic above? Head boing!! Do the cards have something in store for me today or trying to tell me something?? I just had to laugh. I had already had this & another version saved, but going back & looking at them, both have his hand cut off. I honestly don't ever remember seeing this before or maybe I did but I was always too mesmerized by those eyes.

Don't let her beat you Randy!!

I love seeing all of these pics, some of them are amazing! Just when I think I've seen every one of him, nope, there is a new one! I feel stupid asking, but Eyes for the Meis referred to a Randy song by TBOML...brain fart, but what song is that?! The funny thing is, no matter how old Randy gets and at 75, he's up there, I still think his smile and face are beautiful. He's just lit from within somehow. Everything he went through had to be for a reason somehow and I think he had a fantastic career with songs that will stand the test of time.

Hi JLE... Sorry, haven't been here for a little while. That pic of Randy is awesome. He has such a gorgeous smile. You are right, at any age he still has that same sweetness & endearing quality about him. You just can't help wanting to hug him. What a sweet soul he is. Here is another pic that is very similar to the one you posted, another one just because & the last one is a screenshot of him singing TBOML.

Ohmygosh, please don't feel stupid asking about TBOML...when I first joined here, a lot of posts had abbreviations for tours & songs & for a while I had the hardest time figuring them out, but I finally caught on lol. It's short for The Best Of My Love. I listen for that little run of his at the end of that song every single time lol. I can't even listen to the album version anymore, if it's not there, it just doesn't seem right! I wish the camera had fully been on him when he did it. You can see him a little bit down at the far end & if you watch him really closely you can see him do it. It's such a small touch, but I love it. That's the magic. I hope I live long enough to see the day when (hopefully) Henley let us see the rest of the '77 concert footage. They played there 2 days & the DVD is just a compilation. They did 21 songs the first night & 19 the second night & only 8 songs were on the DVD. So there are 32 performances out there no one has seen before. Just think of what we're missing. So unfair. I did stumble across a video of the alternate night's version of HC that is not on the DVD by accident. I don't know how in the world that one got out. I started the video & thought it was the same one I'd already seen 100 times & I almost stopped it, but I'd watched the DVD so often that I noticed the beginning was different so I kept watching & realized what I'd found. I about fell off my chair!! I keep thinking that maybe some others got out too, so now I can't watch a video clip of any '77 footage anymore without totally examining it. lol... No luck yet though.

I'm sure Randy would love to hear of his positive influence on you---you should write him a letter! You would just have to research to find out where to send it. Some artists are advised not to reply to fans (so many crazy folks), but if he got it, it would surely bring a smile!

Hey kids! A very informative website called The Randy Meisner Retrospective recently posted an interview with drummer Pat Shanahan, Randy's longtime friend and former bandmate (Soul Survivors, The Poor and Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band). Pat tells many interesting stories and even shares a few never-before-seen photos from his personal collection - they appear to be from The Stone Canyon Band's 1970 tour of Europe.

Please to enjoy:
