The announcement was he will be touring with Styx and Foreigner this summer. The tour is call the Soundtrack of Summer. I think Styx and Foreigner is coming to Mississippi this summer. I might drive down to Biloxi and see them since Don will be on the tour.

Excellent! While I'm happy he's touring, I am a bit worried that his set will be truncated severely to accommodate three acts. I hope he doesn't forego touring solo entirely; perhaps he will do more solo shows after this is over.

I think the tour is only three months. So he probably can do some solo shows in between and like you said. After the tour. He's going to be busy this summer. I saw the tour dates and he's not going to be near me.

Just looked. Meager pickings in the South. The closest to me is Tuscaloosa.

Did anyone notice tickets are being sold separately for each act? What, do they come kick you out if you only paid for the first one? Sell the same seat three times? That would be pretty odd. Maybe they just have different presales... but even that's a bit odd.

OK, so since this is big news I moved it to its own thread.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/styx-foreigner-announce-tour-eagles-676855), there's more to this than just a tour - they're also going to put out an accompanying compilation album which will include a new version of "Hotel California."

I quote:

Don Felder will open each show, while Styx and Foreigner will interchange closing slots. All three musicians speak positively about collaborating on stage during the tour, and they have, in fact, already convened to record a new version of the Eagles' "Hotel California," which Felder co-wrote. The groups will debut their version on the Fox Network's Fox & Friends on Tuesday, and it will be part of a compilation album being put together to accompany the tour.

"It's a different take on the song," Felder says, "with different people [including Styx's Tommy Shaw and Foreigner's Kelly Hansen] singing different verses and guitar solos by me and then Tommy and Mick. So who knows, we may wind up doing that [song] in the show at the end of the night."

Jones, meanwhile, says taking on the iconic track was "great. It was an awesome lineup, and it sounded great. It's a brilliant song; it really paints a picture, you know. So it was a lot of fun playing it."

And here I go again, lol.

When I went to Felder's ticket sale webpage (http://tickets.turnupgroup.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=23), I noticed it said "Tickets and VIP Packages." I wonder if he's going to do some VIP stuff too now? There are no more details yet on the webpage.

I'm so confused on the VIP tix etc. Yesterday, I asked Don directly if VIP tix would be available for ALL of the shows and he replied with:

Don Felder: "I can confirm YES, a limited number will be sold for every show on this tour. New and exciting!"

Then, when he released the tix going on sale today, half of the cities were not listed. But as I am writing this, he just posted this:

"As of 10am Eastern we've launched the first of my pre-sale tickets and VIP packages for the upcoming tour with Styx and Foreigner."

I am hoping that this means that the VIP's for the other cities are coming soon!!

Mind you, I recently read something about an Eagles tribute band that called TBS a base player rather than a bass player ...

Though they've toured together before, this time has the addition of a new take on a signature rock hit. Fedler, Styx and Foreigner have re-recorded the Eagles' signature 1977 single "Hotel California" for the tour, with newly sung verses and plenty of guitar solos. In the interview, Fedler hinted that "Hotel California" could very easily close out the shows on the Soundtrack of Summer Tour.

"Newly sung verses"? I wonder what that means.

"Newly sung verses"? I wonder what that means.

I read somewhere else where the lead singer from Foreigner and Tommy Shaw from Styx sing a verse along with Don, so maybe that's what it means. I doubt they changed the lyrics, but it's hard to say. It'll be cool to hear.

I'm majorly bummed I can't go as St Louis is outdoor as is Chicago....

Much like Joe Walsh at Ribfest a couple years ago, I cannot physically do outdoor concerts. I have an extreme reaction to heat and with my bad health lately it'd be a recipe for disaster. I'm very upset but I'm not going to potentially hurt or kill myself by going to this show. I had a chance to go to Clapton's Crossroads back in 2010. Same deal, no can do with the heat. I need seating AND air conditioning.

I noticed a qualified has been added to Felder's VIP package. I bolded the new limitation below.

Exclusive VIP Package - http://ow.ly/tosGH
Extremely Limited Quantities available!
VIP Package includes:
Ticket (Held at Will Call)
Meet and greet
1 item autographed (no guitar pics, guitars, or eagles merchandise with signatures)
Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles (1974-2001) Book
"Road to Forever: Extended Edition” CD
VIP laminate
Backstage tour

Wonder why he doesn't want to sign guitar picks, guitars, and Eagles merch (or is it just merch with other Eagles' signatures on it - phrasing is unclear)? If he's afraid of people selling it, all he would have to do to stop that would be to insist on personalizing the autographed item.

If he won't sign any Eagles merch, there are going to be a lot of disappointed fans.

WF, so sorry that you can't go, but I definitely can see why. I did the Eagles shows in Atlanta that were in an outdoor amphitheater and thought it would be 'safe' because it was the beginning of May. The second show was OK, but the first, it was in the 90's, and it was miserable. At least until the guys got on stage :D

Perhaps he doesn't want anyone coming to the show and meet/greet just to fulfill a complete set of Eagles signatures? The phrasing is indeed a bit unclear. Maybe he would sign any of those items (picks, guitars or other Eagle merch) as long as there were no other signatures on them? I haven't yet decided if I will do the meet and greet but if I do, I have a 45 single of Hotel California and that would definitely be the one item I would want him to sign. When I think of that song, I think of Don.

Wonder if his ticketing people could answer and clarify? I'll try writing to them and see what they say!

Just heard back from them! I specifically asked about the picks and guitars and I also asked about my "Hotel California" 45 single. This is the response:

Hello!
Apologies for the delayed response but I sent your email to management to find out for sure how to answer you. Please see below:

No guitars and no picks period- her hotel California thing is great!
We just ask nothing with other Eagles members signatures on it.

Hope this helps!

I've gotta admit, the fact that I can get the 45 signed, sweetens the pot just a little bit more for me. What to do... what to do?! :headscratch:

Hmm, I've never heard of that kind of restriction before! Do you think you could ask why?

Perhaps he doesn't want anyone coming to the show and meet/greet just to fulfill a complete set of Eagles signatures?

I don't understand why wanting a complete set of signatures automatically makes you suspect as a fan. You're a huge fan, but if your "Hotel California" 45 had already been signed by Randy Meisner, for instance, he'd no longer be willing to autograph it. Again, personalization guarantees no resale value, so...?

Thank goodness Stevie Nicks doesn't have that policy. My dream is to get her signature on my Buckingham Nicks album, which Lindsey Buckingham has already signed. I'm one of those peole who likes ALL the contributors to an album to sign it, not just my favorite.

lizzyplays
02-12-2014, 07:30 PM
Well, the odds of me getting any of the other Eagle's signatures are 0 to none because I'm not quite willing to follow them around enough in hopes that that happens! lol Since I equate Felder the most with Hotel California, I'm ok with just his. And all of that still hinges on whether I can get a good seat with the VIP or if I have to forego the VIP in order to get a good seat.

Someone suggested that I skip the VIP for this tour, because I could most likely meet him at some point on his solo touring stuff. But, to my knowledge, he doesn't do a lot of touring in my area so that would entail extra money for traveling and lodging plans and in the long run, that would probably be just as much as the VIP.

And if it's ok with you, I am going to take a pass on asking them why he won't sign the other stuff simply because it goes beyond the realm of questioning that I personally would have done, and I would like to leave that as it is.

I saw someone post on FB that they got third row with VIP. I wasn't sure if they got it through Felder's package, though, or through another band's. The problem is that if it's like Eagles VIP, it's first come, first serve, and you might get further back if you wait.

Another problem is that I'm not sure how they're divvying up the Felder VIP seats with the Styx and Foreigner VIPs. Do they all come out of the same pot? Or does each act get a section? If you're competing with Styx and Foreigner VIPs, it could be harder to get a good one. :(

That said, if you're going to skip VIP and go to a scalper for a good seat, they may try to charge you more than the VIP ticket price - plus you usually have to buy in pairs with scalpers. It's hard to say as the tour hasn't started yet, but it's a possibility. Scalpers - I'm sorry, "ticket brokers" - are just out of control.

You can try your luck with tickets dropping but that's no sure thing. It used to happen all the time but it appears with VIP ticketing that last-minute drops of primo seats are the exceptions rather than the rule.

Finally, can we assume Felder will continue doing the free meet'n'greets when he goes solo again? If I were you, I'd ask him to make sure if you skip the VIP M'n'G.

Ack, so many uncertainties!

I won't buy a ticket from a scalper, broker, whatever they call themselves. I refuse to support that whole business, and yes it means I miss out on shows but so be it. I detest the practice and I've been writing to several stars urging them to speak out or start something or do something, anything. Not that any of that will do any good, but it makes me feel productive at least.

The venue that I'm wanting to go to, their tickets haven't gone on sale yet. Whichever way I decide to go, I will buy the day of the presale and be done with it. It would be worse to not get to go at all!

I could live with a third row seat. :-)

I picked a show at random, and Felder's VIP seats were back in row T. So no, I'm not paying VIP prices to sit in row T, even if it comes with a meet and greet. I'm not sure I'd pay face value for row T. Foreigner had the VIP seats in the front at that show, and they were higher priced, but not by hundreds, maybe a hundred.

I can't even access the the VIP link that Felder posted when I'm at work, it comes up 'Page Cannot Be Displayed'. So, buying tickets to these shows seems to be out of the question at the moment unless there are still good seats when I get home from work in the evening.

Yeah, I'm not going to buy a VIP and sit in anything beyond row 3, or 4-5 but that's definitely it. And I'm not even sure I would go for row 4 or 5. That would be a spur of the moment decision I would have to make.

Got front row center for face value through Styx FanClub pre-sale yesterday for the Greek Theater here in L.A.

I'm not even a member of their fan club but for some odd reason the day before (Tuesday) they posted the password on their web-site for everyone to see (via the Lounge their on-line chat forum). Maybe because their pre-sale for the Greek was not through crowd surge but TM. Who knows!

I did my research ahead of time and found there were 3 ways to get advanced tickets: Styx FanClub; Foreigner VIP and Felder VIP/regular tickets. I noticed that the best pre-sale seating tickets, at face value, were being offered by Styx but I didn't want to pony up the fan club fee. Luckily, as I stated earlier, Styx posted it for the whole world to see.

In any event, it took me almost twenty minutes but I finally got front row center through the Styx Pre-Sale for $133 all in.

Actually I got two front row seats one of which I am now selling in case anyone is interested. It's stage left outside aisle seats. Long story that.

Foreigner is selling seats like my center section seat for $500 and Felder's VIPs ($470) weren't even in the Pit. Sure both also offer a M&G but I've been there and done that-not interested. Just wanted the front row without paying $500. At my age I could care less about mingling with the stars. :grouphug:

I didn't mind the singing so much (although of course the original is the best) - what bothered me was the change in the 2nd guitar solo. That solo is to NEVER be improvised on IMO!!! It was perfect from the recording and is what makes that song so special to me.... HC is one of those songs that needs to be played just like the record as it was a masterpiece.

Totally agree, WF!

I don't mind them covering it, I'm sure it's fun for them, but I don't really want to hear it. I'm kind of that way with any covers. I nearly always prefer the originals.

Glenn's covers of standards don't bother me because they are old and I wasn't really a fan of them originally.

I had the same reaction to the change in the 2nd guitar solo. Otherwise I didn't think that it was extremely different. And I agree, the original is the best?

I'm guessing there was a reason for the change in the 2nd solo.

Like others here, I'm not usually a fan of covers. Someone adding their own spin on a loved favorite is like fingernails on a chalkboard, and someone trying to copy it exactly usually fails and that's even more annoying. For this one, I very definitely missed Henley's lead vocals. IMO, Joe is the only allowed to even attempt 'his' guitar part, and the magic that is the Eagles is definitely missing.

All that being said, it was tastefully done, and I did enjoy listening to it. I'm not gonna buy it, and I'm not gonna travel hours and buy a ticket to see it, but I did enjoy it.

Well, I didn't think it was horrible or anything - it's just that some things are so perfect that they are best left alone and the original recording of Hotel California is one of them, IMHO.

I thought it was painful to listen to, HOWEVER, I am happy for Felder and I hope this summer tour is a success and he makes a lot of $$ and gains a lot of fans.

I don't know anything about the guys in Styx or Foreigner, but I am a little surprised they agreed to be part of recording the new version, considering the Eagles are on tour and performing that song every night. We all know Don's contribution to the song and his "ownership" of it and right to perform it, but they've given this remake such a high profile PR push, I just think it can't do anything but backfire. Not many will appreciate or like this version. I think it would be fine for them all to sing verses during the live shows, that would be cool, but to cut a single...strange decision-making. Obviously they don't care what the Eagles think, which is fine, but the whole thing just smells weird.

The guitar solo change up bothered me.

I've always thought DF was a better singer (and I disagree with GF and DH not thinking so) than anyone gives him credit for but of course the original is what everyone knows and loves - myself included....

I've kept my mouth shut on the whole Don Imus thing from last week because I thought I was going to throw my computer across the room when I watched that video - it REALLLLLY rubbed me wrong. And I knew if I came here and posted my thoughts on it right away I'd probably wouldn't have been very level headed. He made GF/DH out to be angels and responsible for all of the success and Felder to be a guy who didn't contribute anything. It made my BP rise for the rest of the day that's for sure. I think Felder is a fine singer. He's not Don Henley but NO one other than Don Henley is Don Henley so that's not a fair comparison.

The remade song won't be going in my iTunes, but the singing was fine. It was just the overall change up that was not my thing.

It's a competent cover but doesn't bring anything new. Don's vocals are ok and I was more bothered by the "frills" added by the other vocalists.

Based on this and the live clips, Felder doesn't do too bad a job on covering Henley's vocals. Where he fails is on "Take it Easy" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling". Henley has said he likes to choose a key so that his voice is slightly strained so that may be why it works for Felder. Whereas TIE and PEF need to sound relaxed and that doesn't seem to be a natural fit for Felder. I'm mildly curious how he does on Heartache Tonight.

If Don Henley and Glenn are paying any attention, they may be relieved that this new version is so uninspired.

That's what I can't figure out. Doing it at their shows is one thing, but recording it? :nope:

I love Styx and Foreigner too, but doing their own songs, not someone else's.

From the press, Foreigner, Styx and Don Felder also recorded "I want to know what love is", so it's not just HC. It looks like those are the only two tracks on the album that have Don Felder.

That is seven minutes of my life that I won't get back that's for sure. Glenn mentioned that one of the reasons he doesn't like American Idol is because the contestants "over sing", or something to that effect. Would this be a case of that happening here? Some of his vocal styling and phrasing is off putting for me, and then futzing with the guitar parts at the end - heresy!

Walshfan, not to get you BP up, but Imus didn't really say Don H and Glenn were angels. He said they were all just miserable people, despite all their success, and he wouldn't want to hang out with them, and he knows Henley!

That's true. But he made it come across like Don and Glenn = Eagles which I don't agree with. The sum is greater than it's parts, or two out of five. They get a lot of credit as songwriters of course (and it's deserved) but the notion that they could replace any of them other than GF and DH and it would be ok is NOT ok in my book. I know I'd never see an Eagles show without Joe or Timothy... Felder being gone was hard enough to deal with.

I just watched this clip. He said 'you can be the Eagles, you can be Henley, you can be Frey' . That doesn't mean what you interpreted it to mean, that the others could be replaced, which was not said at any point. Referring only to the two main members of the band is common, no matter how much you dislike them being the two main members. He also never said that Felder contributed nothing or hardly anything; he was specifcally talking about Felder's performance of HC. And as ktdids said, he also did not say Frey & Henley were angels. In fact the woman called Frey a 'jerk'. I cringed at the way they ridiculed Felder, though. They made the point quickly & overdid it.

ETA: I am listening to it now. As far as I am concerned, the least said about it the better.

Glad to hear it from someone else as I did take "You can be the Eagles, Henley/Frey" to mean that they were the only ones that he thought were any good. I overreact and I have a hard time always understanding how people mean things sometimes in this respect and I assumed that's what he meant because of the DF bashing.

I don't not like the fact that DH/GF are the main two members, I like them fine. It's just that I see each guy as equals in terms of value to the band and I realize I'm in the minority.

I did catch that about them saying they were miserable, but I felt they were over the top harsh on DF. You don't have to like his singing or the "rerecorded" HC or that live version but Imus making him out to be person who everyone hated didn't sit well with me.

I think Don and Glenn know this. They could legitimately tour as The Eagles with a backing band, just singing all of their own lead songs. I don't think they have any interest in this. If they were as greedy as people say, they could keep ALL of the $$ for themselves and pay the musicians scale. Whatever chemistry they have with those other two that allows them to keep doing what they do, they recognize it, and they know they would lose fans at shows.

Just listened to the new version of HC. I'll buy the CD, because I'm a completist and I feel compelled to buy it all, lol. However, it's not anywhere near the quality of the original, IMHO.

I haven't listened to the Imus clip, but Imus has the reputation of being harsh and saying ugly things, so I'm not surprised.

I think there’s nothing wrong with doing a new version of a song. Don Felder wrote the music for "Hotel California," so he’s entitled to do and record a new version of it. The original song is a masterpiece and is one of my favorite songs ever. That being said, I like this new version, it’s not bad at all. The vocals and guitar work are good. I like that the first part of the song is acoustic and the second part is electric.

Seriously... what's up with that?!

I believe the part that my bandmate Tommy Shaw sings on there — his voice has a quality that maybe captures the pathos of the California experience more than even Henley’s did.

Er.... I'd have to disagree with that opinion, lol.
