That's interesting! Have I shown anyone the Flying Burrito Brothers' "Older Guys" video that I found about a year ago? It's actually really funny. Bernie is so adorable in it!!

This is very rare - Bernie doing "God Loves His Children" (it's the second song after "Runnin' the Roadblocks"). Finding Bernie stuff is always a treat!

Another rarity - Bernie playing with his spoof band Run C&W (in addition to original material with a humorous bent, the band took songs from other genres and played them hillbilly bluegrass style. The name spoofs Run DMC. The year: 1993.)

Thanks. I've updated the video info to source the photo information to this Board. Thanks again for the info and I hope you like the video. I've always thought that it would have been good to put songs off Desperado to those images of them as gunslingers, maybe a movie. This is my modest attempt at a slideshow version.

Thanks for the link! We appreciate it.

Your slideshow was well-done, much better than the usual amateurish efforts you see on YouTube when it comes to placing photos with music. I can tell the images were chosen with care and you went beyond simple photos of the Eagles. Good job!

More classic Bernie with the Flying Burrito Brothers doing "Six Days on the Road" at the infamous Altamont concert in 1969 from the film Gimme Shelter. You only get to see couple of glimpses of Bernie, I'm sure he couldn't wait to get out of there:

Holy crap, that looks freaking awful. The festival from hell, with Hell's Angels to boot! And thank goodness that camera didn't dip any lower on the naked guy.

Thanks for posting it, though. It's an interesting historical glimpse. I didn't know the Flying Burrito Bros. played Altamont.

BTW, the captions erroneously put one line of the song as "killed my baby goodbye" instead of "kissed my baby goodbye" - Freudian?

I noticed that. I also noticed that they are using the studio version of "Six Days" (although they edited out Bernie's guitar solo dammit!). Gram Parsons was good buddies with Keith Richards and got the Burritos a spot on the bill (along with Santana, Jefferson Airplane, CSN&Y, the Grateful Dead [who refused to play because of the violence] and of course the Stones. It's a must see movie, but very harrowing.

Here's a recent article from Chris Hillman about the show:

I've got a book by Hillman that says that Gram Parsons got on the helicopter with the Stones and got out of there and Bernie and another guy were left behind to fend for themselves, which they did, finally. I'll see if I can find the article as it goes into detail.

Bernie seems like the type of guy who is tough enough to take care of himself even in a crowd like that, but how selfish of Gram (sorry Gram lovers).

GTLO - I read that article and wow, "nightmare" indeed. Ironic that it happened only months after Woodstock, but when people go too far and decide they no longer need to restrain themselves, it's going to get ugly.

sodascouts

The book is Hot Burritos - The True Story of the Flying Burrito Brothers by John Einarson with Chris Hillman.

Page 208, the Burritos were at the Altamont concert and when their set was done, Sneaky Pete, Chris and Jim Dickson left as the security force, the Hell's Angels, was beating up people in the crowd, and had actually come up on the stage when the Jefferson Airplane played and beat up Marty Balin. So the mood was ugly, it was now dark and the Rolling Stones delayed their performance by 2 hours. Gram Parsons(who worshipped the Stones blindly), Michael Clarke and Bernie Leadon stayed behind. Gram kept telling them that they would get to fly out of there in the helicopter with the Stones. When the Stones finally came out the lights came up but they only played a few songs. Bernie recalled being backstage facing the audience and fights breaking out and people would push away from it and then he would see pool cues coming down and somewhere in all this, that guy got killed, on camera and there was such a press of people that he got passed up and laid on the edge of the stage like a sacrifice. It was such an ugly vibe, the Angels were turning meaner, you could see it in their faces. Jagger stopped singing and tried to calm the Angels down but no deal. Gram left the stage with the Stones and ran to the helicopter and got on with them so Michael Clarke and Bernie Leadon were left behind. They started walking and met a couple of girls Bernie knew from L.A. and got in their car and wound up getting back to Sausalito.

That's a sort of summary of the article with a few quotes, not my own. But Gram by then was pretty far gone into drugs and alcohol and hero worship of the Stones to the exclusion of everyone else. I've got the movie Fallen Angel about him plus several books and Bernie is in the movie being interviewed along with Chris Hillman. Totally fascinating.Wow, thank goodness Bernie was good with the ladies, lol. Seriously, how scary, though.

This is all I have at hand right now, other books are stored in the shed. Some have very little connection with the Eagles, others have paragraphs and chapters about them, but Bernie, surprisingly, is mentioned in a lot of these books about the early years.

The movie about Gram Parsons is Fallen Angel. It was interesting but reinforced my conviction that Parsons is given way too much credit for fusing country music with rock. He was never a favorite of mine either so my apologies to his fans.

Wow.

It's a BBC documentary. A friend was kind enough to record it from the TV and send it to me... I don't think you can buy it, although you may be able to find clips online. It features interviews with Linda Ronstadt, Graham Nash, JD Souther, Bernie, David Crosby, as well as some performance footage. Bernie looks great. I downloaded the app from the site and it is free and was able to watch the whole thing. Well worth it as Bernie is interviewed extensively and offers some great insight into the band from it's inception through his departure which he admits was his need to break from the drugs and the partying. Pretty much the last half hour covers the Eagles with interviews with Bernie, JD Souther and David Geffen. There is some great footage of one of the Eagles very first gigs at an art gallery in Venice. Bernie's got that cool surfer drawl and you can't help but admire his integrity, wit and charm.

You never cared about Jagger or Gram? If you're referring to Gram I agree that his singing is overrated. He wasn't the greatest singer but his voice sort of 'touched your heart' as Bernie said. It's heresy to say so these days when he has been so deified.

That's the point. He was deified, just like Kurt Cobain & Jeff Buckley, because he died young. Because we don't know what type of music he would have created if he had lived it is so much easier to label him a 'genius' and close down all discussion.

Personally, apart from the magnificent Return Of The Grievous Angel, $1000 Wedding and The New Soft Shoe, I just don't think most of his solo work is as great as critics have made out.

I posted this on another thread, but it belongs here - The Flying Burrito Bros in 1970:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTYIMtHk4H4

Is it terribly shallow to say that Bernie looks really good? He doesn't sound bad either.

In one of the youtube comments, there's more detail:

Yeah, that's Bernie. I asked Chris about this and he said Gram had just left the group and Rick Roberts had yet to join and they had these commitments so they played the gigs and split up the vocals and went out as a quartet(with Mike Clarke and Sneeky Pete Kleinow). They weren't on all of the Festival Express dates, just a few.

UTW, you've been around here long enough to know that acknowledging how handsome the guys are/were is highly encouraged and certainly not considered shallow by Borderers!! :hilarious:

I think part of what makes Bernie so attractive then and now is he has a nice way about him...I don't know what that means. He's not classicly handsome like a movie star, but very attractive, especially when performing.

"Bitter Creek" is my favorite Bernie song as well. Thank you for translating the description. For a second I thought this might be the show where Bernie appeared as a special guest with Poco during their Japan tour (as posted in the "Earlybird-The Band" thread in the Former Eagles sub-forum). And I started getting excited at the prospect the whole concert was recorded! But Poco's tour was October 1990 and didn't involve Nicolette Larson.

It almost seems like Bernie did more solo shows in Japan than in the U.S.!

I didn't know about the Poco show. I can't be sure this is the other one. There was a video of several songs, including Bitter Creek, from the Hiroshima show on youtube a few years ago but it's gone now.

Here's Bernie playing the mandolin at a 1999 Gram Parsons tribute. Unfortunately not the best quality but he's on stage with Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle, among others. He's mainly featured at 2:25.

A Few (actually a lot of) Words About Altamont

The members of The Flying Burritos - Bernie, Rick Roberts, Chris Hillman, etc. - were simply stunned by what they saw at Altamont Speedway. They played fairly early in the day, but the whole day was bad. So bad that The Grateful Dead, who suggested using The Hells Angels as stage security, decided not to play after seeing the mayhem taking place.

About that mayhem: The Angels have consistently been blamed for the violence at Altamont, but that is far from the entire story.

The overall organization of this free show was horrendous - it was exactly the WRONG way to put on a huge concert. The "organizers," having failed to hold the show in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, were offered the use of the remote and decidedly bleak auto racing facility at Altamont, at the very fringe of the Bay Area.

The massive crowd that turned out for what was billed as The Rolling Stones' "gift" to their fans at the conclusion of their American tour, has been estimated at possibly 400,000. The traffic was a nightmare, parking was totally haphazard, and no one had thought to provide the needed infrastructure (bathrooms, medical staff, professional security) for such a huge mob.

And in many ways, it was a mob. A large segment of the crowd was loaded on everything from beer to acid to angel dust. By the time the concert actually started, things were already out of hand. "We just sensed that this thing was gonna go really bad," said one guy who worked on the stage crew. "You could just feel the vibes getting sour."

The Angels should never have been hired as stage security; when people started pushing over their bikes - the only thing of value many of them had - they reacted like… like Hells Angels. And everything went downhill from there, propelled, no doubt, by Sam Cutler, The Stones' manager, who insisted that fans be kept off the stage "no matter what you have to do."

Thanks, Sam.

The 18-year-old guy who was killed by an HA member was brandishing a loaded gun; he had gone back to his car to get it, and, according to his girlfriend, was going to kill Mick Jagger because the girlfriend said that Jagger was "sexy as hell." The member saw the gun, drew a knife, and stabbed the guy before he could get a shot off. After an investigation, it was determined (correctly) that his action was legally justifiable.

Oh wow, bro. You should write your memoirs.

Why/how did a major big-time band like the Stones allow such amateurish, poor planning? Maybe they thought, like Woodstock, everything was going to turn out alright.

It’s kind of poignant to watch Jagger in the Gimme Shelter film. You can see on his face that he realizes the vibe has gotten dangerous and he tries to go all peace and love on the mob “brothers and sisters” but it’s already out of control.

I apologize for strong-arming this thread. No - hijacking. Whatever; I have really strong feelings about that Altamont thing - it pretty much killed off the idea of large outdoor concerts outside of stadiums, etc. There were other large outdoor shows (Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers at Watkins Glen, NY, which was reportedly the largest concert crowd ever) but the debacle at Altamont was a disaster for free concerts.

Back then, people had little experience putting together large events, which is why The Stones thing went so wrong: nobody knew better. I take that back - Bill Graham knew better, but he also knew better than to get too close to this show.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled thread.:fainted:

P, I agree with NMB, you really should write your memoirs.

That said, Bernie is awesome, and anything new that can be found and shared, refreshed or restored, I'm for that. :yay:

Thanks, everyone, for sharing these "finds."

Didn’t Bernie have a quote about Altamont: “when someone is being killed in front of the stage as the Rolling Stones are playing, that is not a little ok” or something like that.

The FBB set was short and Bernie has said that there good vibes while they performed their upbeat country rock tunes. The Angels calmed down and temporarily stopped beating up people. For some reason they started up again when CSNY next took the stage.

For a great overview of the concert and the terrible decisions that led up to the tragic events (in all 4 people died at the concert), I recommend Joel Selvin’s book, Altamont: The Rolling Stones, the Hell Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock’s Darkest Day.

Delilah, I believe you may be thinking of Bernie’s disapproval of the dubious tribute given to Gram Parsons’ remains by his friends, yet in mild California surfer language.

It was something like, “it’s really not OK to burn your friend’s body and leave it in the desert.”

Peneumbra - You really should write your memoirs ! You have such interesting stories that I love hearing. Mick Jagger should have known better than to hire Hell's Angles for security. I remember seeing bits and pieces of the movie on tv.

The two quotes were:

"You don't just leave him at the side of the road, half-burnt. That's not very cool."

"People have been killed in sight of the stage while the Stones were playing 'Sympathy for the Devil,' and everybody went 'this is a little not O.K.'"

The big naked dude in the video ended up getting pummeled by the Angels. It would have been nice to have more direct footage of the FBB.

Thanks for the quotes, SS! According to the Selvin’s book the Stones were performing “Under My Thumb” while Hunter was being murdered but the doc used “Sympathy for the Devil” for dramatic effect. Also, it was “Sympathy” that was referenced in Don McLean’s “American Pie.”

NMB, so true about Bernie!

This video was posted here already but it was back in 2008 and the link is broken. So I’m re-posting here. Bernie sings lead on “God Loves His Children” starting at 2:41. This was sometime in the 80s. He looks and sounds good - it’s probably his most clean-cut look ever.

Bernie is featured in a recent video on the Ask Zac YouTube channel. Zac gives an overview of Bernie’s musical career and discusses some technical aspects of the B-bender (around 19:00).

Zac talks about video footage of Bernie performing with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, who recorded a duets album together. He also mentions seeing Bernie perform at a festival in Canada, where he sang “My Man” — a true rarity!

I'm not surprised - this isn't too long after he was touring with the Eagles for *History of the Eagles*, remember, and he was still on his game for those shows! Of course, he didn't get to strut his stuff like this. Thanks for finding it!
