This thread is for older articles about Randy.

I found some old articles in the Google archive. Here's some interviews with Randy:

Great finds, Soda, thank you so much!

Both Ann and Nancy Wilson sang on Randy's 1982 album, which had the same producer (Mike Flicker) as Heart's early albums. Heart guitarist Howard Leese also played on the record and seems to have been friends with Randy since the 70s - there's a photo of them from back in the day with their arms around each other and Randy is wearing a Budmaster t-shirt.

Just a brief mention of Randy in this March 1, 1969 Rolling Stone article on "Hollywood Hillbillies - What's Old is New Again,"
Others in the band are Randy Meisner, a Nebraska boy who plays bass and sings most of the songs demanding the highest range...

And this 2013 RS article isn't exactly retro but it's about the making of James Taylor's 1969 classic album "Sweet Baby James" and contains an even more brief mention of our Nebraska fella: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/how-james-taylor-made-sweet-baby-james-20130416

Randy's art was featured in the 1994 book "Musicians as Artists," alongside contributions from such nobodies as John Lennon and David Bowie. :) The book's authors are Jim McMullan and Dick Gautier; photographs by Stephen Stickler - who has since become a very successful rock and fashion photographer.

Thanks for the links NightMistBlue.

A while ago I found a review of an early Pogo (Poco) live show. The reviewer singled out, bassist Randy Meisner, singing Anyway Bye Bye, as the shows undoubted highlight. I suppose it would have been on Poco's first album.

Poco, later released it with writer, Ritchie Furay on lead vocals. Randy released a cover of it, a decade or so after that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9B6mYyuhuXE

I wonder if there's a version out there somewhere, of Randy singing Anyway Bye Bye with Poco.

Wouldn't it be cool if we could find a recording of a Pogo/Poco show at the Troubadour? Randy has one; he said he listened to it before recording that version you linked to.

Do you recall where you found the early review that you read?

In the "1978 live concert" thread, I asked about the 20-30 songs I thought Randy had written with a friend. Well, I found the source!

Around this time, Meisner received a phone call from Steve Edwards, a guitarist who had played on Randy Meisner. "He wanted to get together and start writing," Randy recalls. "But I wasn't ready to go back to LA. I'd just bought a little house in Nebraska, so Steve moved out here and we ended up writing about 26 songs. They were real R&B-oriented, because we both liked that style, but the songs just weren't me."

(I believe BAM stands for "Bay Area Magazine")

Cool!! Very interesting. Thanks, D.

I "spoke" to a woman online who says she lived next door to guitarist Steve Edwards in San Diego when he was collaborating with Randy. She thought it was the early 80s. She said Randy would ride up in a limo late at night, about 1:30. She was a teenager at the time. She got up the nerve to knock on the door one night and had Randy sign an album for her. She said (as everyone does) that he was very nice and polite.

A couple of things sound hinky about her story BUT then again, who would think to make up a story involving a long-forgotten side man? His name was so unfamiliar to me, I had to check the first album's liner notes.

Delilah

Wow, what a neat thing to happen to her! Imagine talking to Randy back then after hours...anyway, it does seem like a long drive to San Diego that late at night. Unless he was coming from his home in Palm Springs instead of L.A.

I found this old Billboard article about Randy that touches on the financial issues with his record company. This may explain why he didn't make any music videos for his 1982 album.

Meisner doesn't receive tour support, but he remains active on the road, having played 50 dates in the last three months.
"Companies these days either don't have the money or are afraid to take the risk," Meisner says. "You've got to grab the bull by the horns and do it yourself."

The article goes on to say that the band members do everything themselves--production, carrying equipment, etc. and they stay in $40 a night motels.

"Meisner Hits the Road Via a Lean Tour Machine" Billboard, January 8, 1983 (https://books.google.com/books?id=PSQEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PT57&lpg=PT57&dq=eric+meisner+nebraska+drummer&source=bl&ots=Mbgb5h4Qhi&sig=1LiCqAtl4hFg3NLopOLxhojTx34&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwioo8KxpJPQAhVD5CYKHVMrCZY4ChDoAQg6MAk#v =onepage&q&f=false)

Delilah, can you/do you search Billboard specifically? I've been looking for an article or item about the 1986 Black Tie tour. It would have been in the first half of the year. Supposedly Bernie Leadon joined them on some dates, according to a guy who wrote the bio on the band Bread.

That's sweet of you to say, NMB. I found this article a while back but when I tried to retrieve it from my file, it somehow got deleted.

So to answer your question, I had a hard time when searching for it again. I tried it with Billboard as a search term but no luck. I didn't go into the Billboard website itself. Fortunately, I was able to go into a deleted folder and get it back (--why didn't I think of that before!).

Ok, NMB, just for you...and me and all other curious fans...hopefully this is what you're looking for.

Some weeks ago, in this column, we talked about seeing a group called Black Tie at a local Los Angeles nightclub. The group's focal members were Billy Swan, Randy Meisner, Jimmy Griffin and Bernie Leadon. That's a lot of talent, considering that Meisner and Leadon were members of the Eagles, Griffin was a key member of Bread, and Swan's "I Can Help" has become a classic radio oldie.
Well, Black Tie turned up on our doorstep on a snowy winter night a couple of weeks ago in a distressingly underpublicized showcase. Despite the lack of advance notice, however, the club was almost full, and those who braved the weather saw a high-velocity performance combining three of the industry's finest vocal talents. This time around, Leadon had been replaced by ex-Beach Boy Blondie Chaplin, who added a somewhat tougher edge to the instrumentation; otherwise the set was similar to the one we saw on L.A.

Delilah, when people on YouTube and Facebook see the 1981 performances from the "Fridays" tv show, they always ask whatever happened to Therese Heston. The only trace of her I've seen online is that she did a solo album circa 1980 and there is a photo of her with singer Lauren Wood ("Fallen") on Ms. Wood's web site from maybe the 1990s. That's it, really. Don't know if Therese got married, changed her name, left the music business or none of the above. Have you seen anything?

I've wondered what happened to her as well. I thought I read somewhere she had vocal credits on an album recorded by another female artist, but I don't remember the name. I do remember looking up the person on fb, but there was little info. Whoever this person was may have had something to with The Millenium. I'll rack my brain and see if I can recall.

I didn't know Ms. Heston recorded a solo album.

Ok, I found the info I referred to earlier. Therese Heston recorded and co-wrote an album with Colleen Stewart in 1980. Ms. Stewart also lists Randy as one of the many artists she has performed with either live or in the studio. I remember looking up her FB page, but I don't think I looked into it further than that.

I did a quick search on Discogs and Allmusic.com and could not find a Colleen Stewart/Therese Heston album. I wonder if it ever was released.

I wish I could have answered your question, NMB. I'm curious too. Your tip about the Lauren Wood photo is the most recent item I've seen about her, so thank you for that. My guess is that she did leave the music business at least by the 90s.

Here's a 1992 article that references another benefit where Randy performed, this time for Hugh Wright, drummer for Boy Howdy. It starts after the piece about the Pontiac Brothers; scroll down to "BOY HOWDY."

Wright's family has medical insurance to cover most expenses, Hopper said, but his hospitalization will still be a drain on their finances. The other members of Boy Howdy--guitarists Cary and Larry Park and singer Jeffrey Steele--will try to help Wright and his wife by playing a benefit concert Monday at 8 p.m. at the Cowboy Boogie Co., 1721 S. Manchester Ave., Anaheim. Joining them will be Randy Meisner (the former Eagles and Poco member), Billy Swan (a regular sidekick of Kris Kristofferson), local country band Purple Sky, and others to be announced.

How tragic that he was badly injured when he was trying to help someone else.

He died a couple years ago :-(

A lukewarm review of a Poco show by the L.A. Times. Randy does get a nice shout-out though.

The Meisner/Eagles classic "Take It to the Limit" was given its due, with some splendid falsetto work from the bassist. The current album's Richard Marx contribution, "Nothin' to Hide," offered some excellent vocal harmonies, which also prevailed during an acoustic segment that included "Crazy Love" and "Who Else."

Interesting - thank you, D. Hey did you see about their opening act Kris McKay; she was in a Texas band called the Wild Seeds. I remember "I'm Sorry, I Can't Rock You All Night Long" but that's probably before your time :)

This brings back 1988 real strong for me

So sorry to hear this. Hugh Wright was one of the good ones and yes, he was seriously injured when he was run over while trying to help someone. It's a miracle he survived and was able to recover.

Yes, I read that about Kris McKay being the opening act, but her name doesn't ring a bell. There were so many Austin bands at that time that the only ones that stood out had wild crazy names (the most famous being the Butthole Surfers). That song sounds like it would have been played by a local Austin radio station too, but I've never heard it. Thanks for posting it.

Lol, 1988 wasn't before my time, it was my primo time.

This is a news item that references Randy and Bernie’s involvement in Black Tie. The article is about Malcolm Falk and his various music-related enterprises.

His recording studio, Third Ear Recording, has recorded live albums, demonstration tapes and radio broadcasts by the likes of Etta James, the recently revived Byrds, and Black Tie, a new group consisting of Eagles founders Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon, former Bread guitarist Jimmy Griffin and Billy Swan, whose solo hit, the organ-heavy "I Can Help," topped the pop charts in 1974.

Fascinating all these little links and hidden streams between people, isn't it? Etta James covered Randy's TITTL, and this part caught my eye too:

"At the same time, Falk organized a music publishing company that handles new material by veteran songwriters Jack Tempchin (who wrote 'Already Gone' for the Eagles) and Dean Smith of Captain Beefheart fame."

Mr. Falk sounds like an interesting cat. Wonder what he's doing now? This L.A. Times article is from '92; he was still doing well.

Yes, the more I read up on this stuff, the more connections I see. I didn’t even notice the Jack Tempchin mention. I did note the Belly Up Tavern being a place where Randy played. I wonder if it’s still around, and if Mr. Falk still works out of there, lol. I know the Golden Bear is long gone.

Another thing that strikes me is how involved in music Randy continued to be, unlike the common perception that he simply fell off the map.

A 1995 radio interview with Randy talking about his early pre-Eagles days...he elaborates a little more about the Poco album remixing incident.

I think Richie Furay answered... and I don't know if he told you this but... I said Richie I want to come down and listen to the mixes. And he said well we don't allow that. And I said who's "we" first of all because Poco is a group. I'm one of the members I don't know if you remember or not. He says no we can't... we always do it alone. So I guess him and Jimmy had always done it... wanted to do it by themselves. And I said if that's the way it is then I don't want anything to do with it because I want to be in a group. And he said OK. And I hung up and that was the end of Poco. They went ahead and took my voice off of one of the songs on the album...

He sure could stand up for himself and not take guff from Richie.

It's haunting how similar that incident was to how he felt in the Eagles, towards the end. He felt it wasn't a group where everyone had a say but that Don H and Glenn were treating the other members like employees.

D., what did you think of Randy saying Alan Kemp was the lead singer in The Poor? We thought it was John Day or Randy Naylor.

How I love that parting shot from Randy, it shows his sweetness: "The dog might have been there anyway [on the Poco album cover] but I always say they replaced me with a dog... which I love dogs so I like it." :applause:

I was thinking one of the reasons the Eagles were so much more successful than Poco was that the Eagles functioned more democratically, at least at the beginning. Band members, like employees in general, will be happier and more productive when they have some control and input. But yes, the democracy didn’t last long and neither did the band really after Randy left.

I’m trying to think of a song by The Poor that sounds like Alan Kemp singing lead. He had a fairly distinctive voice. Maybe Randy had a momentary lapse in memory (?). It was 30 years and a few bands later.

Yes the doggie comment was cute and typical of sweet Randy.

Well, I know Rick Nelson loved and appreciated Randy Meisner as did many other people including Mark Guerrero who tells a great story about Rick and Randy. Bottom line -- Randy is a genuinely nice guy and super talent and though I'm glad he left Poco I am sorry it ended like it did. He certainly wasn't asking for anything but respect.

This article doesn’t have a lot of new information, but it’s always cool to find some Randy quotes.

Not many artists who have quit groups to go on their own, make it, [Meisner] told an Associated Press reporter. “Especially with the Eagles. The group was known, but individual names were not known so much—as opposed to the Beatles, you knew everybody’s names.”

Meisner’s first solo album, Randy Meisner, in 1978 was a critical and commercial flop. After it and a short tour of club dates, Meisner went home to Scottsbluff to regroup and relax with his fleet of 20 classic restored antique cars. He didn't stay long. “I realized after living out here for 13 years that I’d adapted to L.A. It just wasn’t my place back there,” he said. “I had to take a hard look at myself and my strengths and weaknesses...I decided I wanted to make another record and I decided where I wanted to go with it.”

This is a link to a June 1995 newspaper clipping from The Dayton Daily News about the time Randy spent in Ohio producing the Electric Range album. It’s a short article but it has some notable revelations:

* Randy says “we” as in he and Bernie were both “kind of disappointed” they were not asked to be part of the HFO tour. This is the first time I’ve read about Bernie’s feelings about not being part of the Eagles reunion.

* Randy’s “experience with vocal harmonies” helped land him the producing gig. Also, the studio’s owner and engineer said Randy was “a good choice” and that it was apparent he had a lot of recording studio background.

Thanks very much, Delilah! I have that CD and thought Randy did a very nice job with the production. It's really not a well-known episode of his storied career, so merci beaucoup for finding this.
