This was posted in the Linda Ronstadt thread but I just got an alert & thought I would post it here with the link in case anybody missed it. Linda is finally going to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & Glenn will be doing the speech for her. Sadly she said she is not well enough to be there. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/posts/la-et-ms-rock-hall-fame-presenters-performers-linda-ronstadt-kiss-nirvana-20140331,0,5565385.story#axzz2xdcEOcno

I just noticed that my av has been replaced with one of Randy. :hilarious: Is Soda up to her old tricks?

ETA: Now it's Joe. Too funny! (And clever)!

Apparently Glenn is not performing. :-(

Just got an alert & checked on TicketMaster out of curiosity. There are still some tickets left-$576 each.

Yep - April Fool's! lol!

I'm going to give the induction its own thread.

Is anybody thinking of going?

There are much cheaper tickets on stubhub.com (weirdly).

I need to see what avatar I have. ETA: I don't mind that one actually. ETA2: Oh I see, they are rotating! The first one that came up for me was Don's Bullshit shirt & now I have a photo of Glenn I've never liked much! Well done Soda!

I am absolutely delighted about this. Don induced Jackson Browne & Randy Newman so it is high time Glenn did one. I wonder if he will mention that Linda was also an inspiration for him when he made After Hours? I didn't really expect him to perform (although he could have sung Desperado). I hope there will be lots of photos. I will be using my HOF avatar next week!

When I read FP's post early this morning, I was thinking that I'd go if at all possible, then talked with Soda and realized it's next Thursday! I can't miss that much time at work, and then later today, we got one of our 'expected' RFP's and it has a very short turnaround time. I'm not even sure I can go to PA to see my family for Easter! I say 'expected' because everyone believed our current contract would be extended and it wouldn't come out for another couple of months. I will be lucky to find time to visit this board between next week and Memorial Day...

Really looking forward to Glenn's speech. I have no doubt it will be great. Wish he would play as well. Maybe a little backup guitar? :-). A girl can dream...

Also looking forward to Michael Stipe and Bruce Springsteen. Bruce's HOF induction speeches for both Jackson Browne and U2 were funny, insightful, and full of admiration.

It will be a fun night!

I'm glad Glenn was asked to induct Linda. When we first heard Linda was going to be inducted in the HOF, I said either Glenn, Don or Jackson might induct her and we were right.

Too bad I don't have HBO. I will probably catch it on YouTube. I was very lucky to see Don last year on HBO later in the year when HBO had that free weekend special and it came on.

The R&R HOF actually has their own YouTube channel where you can watch lots of old induction speeches. Not sure how long it takes them to put them up, but there's some great stuff out there from previous ceremonies!

I suppose that closer to the air date I can call DirecTV and pout like I did about Showtime before the airing of the documentary and see if I can weasel a freebie out of them, or at least waive any 'disconnect' charges if I buy a month and then drop it. Otherwise, I'll be surfing YouTube as well.

Wow, that was a long one! Good one though!

The only thing, she doesn't really care at all about getting in and that is nearly a slam to the whole RRHOF and all the artists that are in it, to me. The way she talks about it..... I think if she really felt that way it would be better to just not say anything about it....

Regarding the performances I am so glad he decided to sing with them for some of the tribute. He is audible in It's So Easy more than You're No Good. Thanks for the interview VA. That answers my question about whether he had spoken to her before the ceremony. she seems like a very admired artist and as we all know and great talent!!

PART ONE: THE LEAD UP!

I arrived in Brooklyn about 1:00 pm. The first thing I did was check out the Barclay Center, but there was no red carpet being set up. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as I needed to go get ready, not hang around. Plus, it was pretty windy and cold! I went off, got dressed, and rode the subway back.

This is what the marquee looked like outside the venue:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/RRHOF2014/DSC01077.jpg

I saw NYC fan on the way to my seat and we chatted a bit. Too bad we couldn't do anything afterward, but she was in a rush!

I passed the VIP entrance on the way to my seat and almost got run over by Michael Douglas. Sting was also milling about. There were celebs everywhere!

Finally, I got to my seat. It was not bad, not bad at all! Here's the view:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/RRHOF2014/DSC01083.jpg

There were too many celebrities at the tables on the floor to count!
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/RRHOF2014/DSC01081.jpg

I looked in vain for Glenn and Stevie, but I saw all of the inductees as they were at the tables closest to the front (sometimes switching around a bit). Here's a photo I took of the section of the floor closest to us (the red-haired lady turned away is Bonnie Raitt):
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/RRHOF2014/DSC01085.jpg

The night started out with the induction of Peter Gabriel, announced by Chris Martin. I really enjoyed his performance of "In Your Eyes."

Cat Stevens was next. He joked about how he couldn't believe someone who didn't do drugs, didn't sleep around, and worshiped one God would be inducted. His performances were fantastic! I didn't know the first song he did, but I loved "Wild World" and "Peace Train" was terrific, too.

Then it was time for KISS, and boy, were a lot of KISS fans there. Some of them were in full makeup. My cousin's wife is in a KISS tribute fans and I once dated a KISS fan, so I know there are many cool ones. However, sitting behind me were two members of the KISS army that were completely obnoxious jerks! They talked loudly through all of the speeches and performances, and even when the members of KISS were giving their speeches, they still weren't quiet! They felt the need to loudly holler "GENE!!!" "PAAAUL!" "KISS! KISS! KISS!" as the guys talked. UGH! Oh well, it didn't ruin my night, but what idiots!

As you guys know, KISS decided not to perform. I wasn't devastated. I was eagerly awaiting what would come next...

PART TWO: LINDA'S INDUCTION

There were two lecterns - one on the far side of the stage away from me, and one on the side of the stage close to me. I desperately hoped that Glenn would speak from the one near me, but apparently they were changing sides with each announcer.

Glenn strode out looking like he owned the place. He also looked like he'd lost a bit of weight. He leaned in to the mike and declared, "I’m Glenn Frey - and it is my great pleasure tonight to induct Linda Ronstadt into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I’d like to start by saying it’s about time!" It was as great start and the speech just flowed from there - impassioned and sincere. He did a great job, as you can see for yourself:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkBZDI1LgXs

I took a picture of the "technotron" in the middle of the venue while Glenn talked, since from my view, I could only get him from the side:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/RRHOF2014/DSC01087.jpg

After he finished and introduced Carrie Underwood, he walked offstage. I thought that was the last I would see of Glenn, as before the show this segment had been billed as "Legendary Ladies Pay Tribute to Linda." I knew it was just a matter of time before Carrie was joined by Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow, and of course STEVIE NICKS, but I had no idea Glenn would join them!

The women came out little by little. After Carrie Underwood did "Different Drum," (http://youtu.be/UeGIUpt5MI0) she introduced Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris, who joined her for "Blue Bayou." (http://youtu.be/1drNREBeCXQ) It was lovely.

Then, Sheryl Crow was introduced. As she headed to the center microphone, I saw the stagehands scrambling to get another microphone lined up off to the side, which I assumed was for Stevie. I saw Glenn come out unannounced and thought, "Oh, he's going to watch them from the stage! Cool!" I was astonished when HE walked up to the new microphone and joined in to back Sheryl Crow for "You're No Good." Emmylou Harris smiled at him and gestured towards him, like she was pleased he was there. It was cute. He seemed to be having a blast - they all did.

They all sounded amazing, but I couldn't even concentrate on the song because I kept thinking that Stevie would surely come out soon... would Glenn stay? The idea of my two faves being up there together was almost too much to comprehend. I was terrified he was only going to stay out for the one song and it would be one of those "so close and yet so far" moments.

So, I'm glad it was captured so I can watch it now! (Thanks for finding it, TG!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tffFunXDH54

My fears were put to rest when Stevie came out to do "It's So Easy!" She started towards Glenn and for a millisecond it seemed like they would even be standing together, but he directed her to the center microphone. She was too adorable as she hurried towards it, almost missing her cue.

And then... they sang! Stevie and Glenn (and the rest lol) sang together! It was like a dream come true for me! I have such mad love for these two singers and to have them perform together like that... it was so overwhelming that I started shaking like a leaf and my knees felt weak. I tried to take a photo but my trembling hands only managed this:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/RRHOF2014/DSC01088.jpg

Thanks for doing better, Getty Images:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/RRHOF2014/rrhof2014-02.jpg

Though he was on the far lectern for the speech, as you can see from my photo, I was lucky enough to have him performing on the end of the stage near me! As they performed, I watched breathlessly with wide eyes, my hand clutched to my chest as if to hold in my pounding heart which was threatening to burst. Tidal waves of emotion surged through me. My thoughts were a jumble of "OH MY GOSH I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING I'M SO LUCKY I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS OH MY GOSH STEVIE AND GLENN TOGETHER THIS IS AMAZING THIS IS UNREAL" etc. lol

It was over all too soon, and Glenn left the stage after the song. Even though I wish he'd have stayed on until the tribute was over, I guess "When Will I Be Loved" (http://youtu.be/fPrxf01viCg) was designed as a showpiece of shared leads between the five women. I'm just glad he decided to jump in when he did... and WITH STEVIE!

I still can't believe it. I don't think I'll ever see those two perform together again (although you never know). So glad I went. SO GLAD.

I'm just going to post this epic performance again!

Absolutely wonderful, Soda.

The only strange thing is his appearance was planned. He had rehearsed with them at soundcheck as he explains here:

You performed tonight with Stevie Nicks, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Carrie Underwood in a tribute to Linda Rondstadt. What was that like?
Soundcheck yesterday had a very transcendent feel for me. It was absolutely amazing to know that we were going to be standing up there, especially when we were vocal rehearsing, and we were all kind of standing in a circle together, and there’s Emmylou and Bonnie and Carrie and Sheryl and Stevie. Just to be with all that great talent, it’s a lot of fun for us. And, of course, all of us love Linda.

This bothered me a little. From the interview with Glenn afterwards:

"You presented the Rock and Roll induction speech for Linda Ronstadt, who used to be a backup singer for the Eagles. "

Ummmmm, she wasn't a back up singer for the Eagles. Or did I miss something a long time ago?

I remember Don Felder said in his book that Bernie and Randy almost weren't, but he implied it was up to Glenn and Don. Timothy seemed to think he was lucky to get inducted, as if it weren't a sure thing (see his speech). However, here, KISS says that the Hall determined who got inducted.

Weird.

Its kinda sad you can't induct members who are not part of the group anymore. Look at Fleetwood Mac. If I remembered, they only inducted two past members of the group. Peter Green and I forgot the other one.

I'm glad they were inducted, but at that moment. I didn't know who Bernie and Randy. I was like who are these guys. Never heard of them and I always thought for us that Timothy sung TITTL. LOL I was still in awe that my favorite group got inducted the same year.

Weird.
It’s the Rock Hall's nominating committee that determines, on a case-by-case basis, which members of a band are inducted. The band decides who takes part in the induction ceremony.

In his book, Don Felder doesn’t say that Glenn and Don H. didn’t want Bernie and Randy to be inducted. It really wasn’t up to them to decide. Don F. says that Glenn and Don H. didn’t want Bernie and Randy to attend and perform at the ceremony.

Thanks for clarifying. That makes sense, at least in the case of the Eagles.

However, I think it might not be as clear-cut as that in some cases. Bob Welch's widow claims (perhaps erroneously? but she vehemently argues it) that Christine McVie blocked Bob Welch getting inducted in the case of Fleetwood Mac.

If that is true, that is very shallow of Don and Glenn if they didn't want Bernie and Randy to attend and perform, . Without Randy and Bernie the Eagles would not have been and succeeded the way they did. Even Glyn Johns said it was the harmony of the voices that made them a band! Again, if that's true, I really have a sour taste in my mouth now for Don and Glenn. Dang, that's something I'd never heard before. I thought they were all in agreement with the entire members reuniting and performing for the induction!
It now makes total sense why Timmie said what he did about Randy being in the trenches and giving Randy the kudos! I Applaud Timothy B Schmit for that now more than ever. Shame on you Don and Glenn if you really felt that way. I seriously hope that it is not true..

MaryCalifornia

We obviously don't know what Don and Glenn were thinking about who appeared at the ceremony (except for what Felder wrote, but I take that for what it is worth - he may be 100% correct, or it may be his perception), but I think that one legitimate way of looking at the issue is if you consider the band to be like a company and the band members to be employees. When you quit your job, you do not get the cool things that accrue to the organization later. If you quit in July, you don't get the year-end bonus. The issue really isn't what their contribution was to the band during its founding and success - that is determined by the committee per SM's information (though I'm sure the committee MUST consult with the main band members for guidance, how would they know what each member's contribution was?) as to whether they're inducted. The issue is who gets to do the ensuing "cool" stuff with the band after they've quit. Say Randy left in July, and Hotel California won best song in February (I'm making this up), does he get to attend the Grammys with the band? Of course not. All I'm saying is I don't think it's that much of a stretch for Don and Glenn to say, "Uh, those guys fought with us and quit the band over 20 years ago, they're not coming up here with us." Which obviously wasn't the way it went, but I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

[edit: I just realized this is the Glenn/Linda thread - this probably isn't the right place for this conversation]

I've been using the streaming on HBO GO to get some screen captures! It's hard to control myself, lol, but here are the best of the ones I got from the speech. I haven't done the performances yet.

In the final mix, can Glenn be heard during the songs? Thanks for the screencaps.

For some reason, I thought Darryl Hall's comments about it were funny:

Zap2it: How was the induction ceremony from your perspective?

Daryl Hall: I think it was indicative of the music business ... and when I say "music business," I use that in very loose terms. To me, the music business is organized crime; it's not a business. [The ceremony] was interminable windbaggery.

Zap2it: You've said you were surprised to be inducted. Was that still a thought for you on that night?

Daryl Hall: Well, yeah. I never expected it, because I've always worked on the outside of all this stuff. I'm not a friend of those people, I'm not part of their world, and I was surprised to be included in it.

If you want the truth, I think there was a lot of pressure put on them from the outside to do it. All I can say about it, in general, is that I'm very happy to be in a museum that's part of probably the biggest thing that happened in the history of music. They made me part of it, I'm very happy about it, and I'm sure John is, too. But boy, suffering through that ceremony - I had more fun in gallbladder surgery.Source (http://www.zap2it.com/blogs/2014_rock_and_roll_hall_fame_induction_ceremony_da ryl_hall_and_oates-2014-05)

The first was when the guy inducting KISS was talking about how wild and crazy their show was, lasers and confetti and all that.... Glenn was smiling and clapping at the description:

I loved Glenn's reaction to Tom Morello's Kiss induction speech. Tom did such a great job inducting Kiss. He was funny, enthusiastic and nailed it from a fan's perspective. The part that cracked Glenn up was the best part of the whole speech.

And the whole place laughed at Clarence's wife's unintended double entendre. To which she said "you guys are so bad". Great moment, especially since it was so sad that Clarence wasn't there.

Love all the great screen shots!

And that was a very touching interview that he did. Really shows his fondness and appreciation for her.

I was wondering, and I think we talked about this already but can't remember, was it planned for Glenn to stay on stage and sing with the girls? I see there are enough mikes, but it seemed they looked surprised that he was there?

ETA: the above photo....Glenn probably could care less by now what photo they showed of him. Water under the bridge, so to say!

Here's what I saw:

1) Glenn standing by the side of the stage with no mic set up
2) People suddenly scrambling to get him a mic
3) Emmylou and Bonnie looking surprised
4) The spotlight having to be widened to include him
5) No announcement of him coming on (he just slipped in quietly)

Yet, he said in an interview that he had joined them in rehearsal.

I speculate he hadn't planned on joining them, yet sang with them at rehearsal for fun. I think after doing that, he spontaneously decided to join them for the "real deal" as well. Thank goodness he did - it was EPIC!

Soda, did you see Nirvana's performances? Did you see St. Vincent (Annie Clark) sing one of their songs? I saw her on Saturday Night Live and I'm obsessed with her. I was wondering if you saw her performance.

sodascouts
06-11-2014, 10:20 PM
Yes, we stayed all the way until the end. Nirvana was big when I was a kid and I remember singing along to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with my friends.

As for St. Vincent, I had never heard of her before that night. In fact, I only recognized Joan Jett and Lorde out of the female stand-ins for Kurt Cobain.

The woman who performed before her was Kim Gordon (from Sonic Youth). She seemed drunk and/or high. At one point, she actually flopped to the floor during her performance. Maybe it was supposed to be on purpose, and she tried to play it off like that by singing a bit on her knees before clumsily getting back to her feet... but from the reactions of the people onstage, they weren't expecting it! Then she started spinning around, swinging the microphone from its cord, trailing it on the ground.. after the song was over, she slurred something indiscernible into the microphone before staggering offstage.

I say all this because my friend and I were so busy talking about how awful Kim Gordon that we didn't really get a chance to appreciate Annie Clark, I'm afraid! However, when I saw the HBO broadcast, I liked her well enough. I wasn't blown away, but "Lithium" is pretty freaking hard to sing like Kurt Cobain because you have to be both intense and dispassionate... the song is from the point of view of a person who wants desperately to sound like he doesn't care and defiantly asserts everything is fine, when actually he is in complete despair. That's hard to pull off. Kurt could pull it off because he was living it. I hope for her sake she never has reason to be as convincing as he was!

MaryCalifornia
06-12-2014, 12:54 AM
Cool. Agree Kim Gordon's performance was painfully awkward. Yikes.

Thirsty&Hot
06-12-2014, 09:43 PM
yeah I was kinda taken aback by Kim Gordon's performance as well...I even checked to see how old she was and was amazed to learn she's 61! and awkwardly flailing around like that on stage. That's not that old, but I would find it painful to flail around like that now at age 31. she definitely seemed a little out of it, but I was never a big Sonic Youth fan, so I'm not sure if she was always wacky like that.

then again Kurt was a bit wacky and would probably roll around on stage sometimes..and wore dresses sometimes..so maybe she was just trying to emulate Kurt's essence.

I did like the idea of all women covering for Kurt. and dug the other performances. love Joan Jett

From and interview (http://www.discussionsmagazine.com/2014/05/an-exclusive-interview-with-linda.html) with Linda Ronstadt:

SPAZ: Now, what were your thoughts on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
LINDA: I have to give you a little clue here - I’ve never seen anything to do with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I didn’t even know it was a TV special until last year - somebody told me. So, you know, what do I know? I don’t play music for prizes. It’s not important to me. It’s always nice to be acknowledged and nobody likes to work in a vacuum. With that being said, it was awfully nice of Glenn Frey to put on his clothes and trudge down to Barclays Theater and make a little speech, which he sent to me, and I really appreciated. What a dear soul he is, and for him to say nice things about me is just very touching to me. Otherwise, who cares? (laughs) Well, I don’t know what to say. It’s not a thing I think about. Other people have thought about it 50 million times more than I ever have.

That was so awesome that you got to go!

It was so surreal. Here's how it went down. My friend Kristin, who is my partner in crime for a lot of Fleetwood Mac stuff, called me when it was announced. This was on April 1. "Stevie's going to be paying tribute to Linda Ronstadt at the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame in New York and I'm going! Want to come?"

"Oh, that's so cool and I'd love to, but it's such short notice..." I mean, we're talking nine days, people.

"And Glenn Frey will be there, too," Kristin added.

"Ha, you liar! This is an April Fool's joke, right?" I scoffed. Glenn just didn't do that kind of stuff, and Kristin knew how much I loved him. Glenn AND Stevie? Too good to be true.

"No, I swear! Look it up!"

I immediately Googled it, read the announcement, checked the site to make sure it was legit, and screamed "I'M THERE!"

I got everything cemented by April 4 and was off to NYC on April 9. Crazy!

SO glad I went.
