Don will be taping an episode of ACL that will probably air sometime in October on PBS. I was hoping Don do this show, but I knew it was a long shot. His episode will be a whole hour instead of two 30 minutes part with different artist.

Taping will be September 1st. Those audience members who get picked to go are so lucky and they get to hear some of the album before us.

This article says it will be on on Halloween, but we will see.

Those outside of the US. Here's a little history of ACL. Its a very popular tv show that is televise on PBS. Its been around for 40 years now. Depending on what market you live in. Its either comes on at 7:00pm, 10:00pm or 11:00pm.

I love this show. They usually have two artist per episode. They have 30 minutes each. So you're not doing that many songs. Luckily for Don, he has the whole show which I'm so glad he has the whole show instead of 30 minutes.

I think it will be Halloween. I'm on vacation during that week. I'm going to a show that night, but I'm going to try to make it back to my room to watch it. If not, I will DVR it before I leave for vacation.

Also. For our overseas friends, you can watch it online. Their maybe a chance the taping could be stream live.

Does the program have live performances? Is it career spanning or strictly focussed on new material? Will Don be chatting?

Thanks a lot shun.

Does the program have live performances? Is it career spanning or strictly focussed on new material? Will Don be chatting?

1. The show is taped live before a studio audience. Even though we will see it taped, it was a live performance.

2. It will be a mixed of new or old material. Don might do 3 or 4 new songs. Since he's doing the whole hour instead of 30 minutes (mostly all their episodes are two 30 minute segments. Plus since PBS is commercial free), I expect Don to sing maybe 10 songs.

3. Probably.

It looks like they have move the episode to air up to October 24th instead of Halloween which is soo much better for me since I'm on vacation that week.

I don't know if the Austin PBS schedule is the same as the other PBS stations.

I was looking at other artist who has been on there and played an hour. Majority of their setlist were new songs. So their maybe a lot of songs from the new album that will be played or maybe Don will balanced it out and do half and half. For the hour episodes, the artist do about 10 to 11 songs.

We're very lucky Don is doing a whole hour because the episodes that have 2 artist only sing 5 songs.

I was reading about the taping thingy. It was saying you have to be in Austin or the surrounding communities to be part of the drawing.

I can understand now because let's say they tell you you got tickets for the taping and they notify on Monday(you have to sign up by this Friday). That means you have to do last minute things to go to Texas.

I don't know when they will notify the winners that they were chosen.

I hope tomorrow we will find out if Don's taping will be stream live. When Gary Clark Jr's had his taping, ACL said on their facebook page that they will stream his taping live.

I'm crossing my fingers that we get to see it and Don agrees to it. It would be cool to see some of the taping and not have to wait until October 24th.

shunlvswx
09-01-2015, 09:18 PM
Nope. Looks like they're not streaming it live. Either Don didn't agree to it or they pick certain people they'll stream live. I was on their page all day to see if they were going to do it. I guess not. We have to wait until October 24th.

Since Martina posted she is there, maybe she'll be posting pictures on her page later. I'll be checking back later. I know the ladies from Fastlane are there. I also heard the Dixie Chicks are there.

We have the Don Henley in Conversation with Billy Joel next later this month. So unless Don also decides to not let them tape it and put it on their website, we should see that since they usually have a video or audio podcast of their shows on their website. It looks they have all their episodes on the website and it looks like its done twice a week.

I found this one Don Henley Appreciation Group. Someone on twitter posted the setlist. It looks like he's singing majority of new songs with 5 old ones.

Also looks like Jamey Johnson and Trisha is there. I had said earlier Martina and the Dixie Chicks(well two of the three) are there.

He has a new guitar player Chris Holt(cute guy), steel pedal player, a fiddle player and 3 backup singers.

That was an interesting article. Don is looking really well. ..hard to believe he's 68! Hope he gets over that bronchical thing he's got going on by the time the tour starts :)

You're welcome. Yeah. I've been online yesterday looking to see anything from the taping. I was hoping for live streaming, but Don probably didn't agree to have it live stream. So I was checking facebook, twitter and instagram. It first started with Martina posting something and I looked around. Even though they say you can't take pictures, somebody will always sneak a few pictures in. :hilarious:

I feel bad for Don. He gets bronchitis a lot. He might need to get that check.

I'm soo looking forward to this on October 24th. I really hope ACL put some clips up from last night before the show airs, but like I said earlier. I guess its up to Don if he wants those posted.

I don't know if I can wait over 50 days to watch the show! From the photos Don looked great and seemed to be having a fun time, despite the bronchial problems! 11 of the songs are from Cass County? Nice! It's even better that some of the guest singers could sing with Don for the taping.

Poor darling, Don - I'll rub liniment on your chest to ease your bronchial tubes :) - isn't it amazing that he still seems to sound great even when he has bronchitis? I'd be laid up like a wreck.

He looks great but I'm not sure about the hair colour - it might just be the lighting but it looks a bit dark for my liking. Wonder what he and Trisha were giggling about. I've always had my suspicions that she had a 'thang' for Don - and who could blame her? :hilarious:

Well, I managed to watch the first 2 minutes of the show at my uncle's house. He has digital tv and an antenna 100 feet up in the air on a tower in his yard. He decided to climb up the tower and move the antenna toward the south/southwest to try to pick up the pbs station out of in northern Florida. Well, it didn't work, at least not at 7 pm. At 11 pm he rescanned the tv, and picked up the station. That lasted for 2 minutes. I got to see the preview, and that was it :brickwall::scowl:. (Oh well, I had to thank him for trying). Had it been a clear night with no clouds, he would've probably picked it up.

Thank you so much for posting all this, Shun. After watching this, at least if I don't get to a concert on this tour, I feel sort of like I've been to one. The first two guests don't quite touch Dolly and Merle, IMHO, but they still sounded okay. The concert itself was pretty awesome. All the vocals and instrumentation were excellent. Don looked and sounded great. You could tell his voice was getting tired by BOS, but to me, it's just incredible how good he sounds at 68.

Don't know why Talking to the Moon didn't make the cut. LOVED it!

Dirty Laundry: I loved the smile Don gave when he came on stage as the audience applauded him. Don was having fun. I loved when he was telling the audience sing along or the I can't hear you, sing louder at the end. Too funny. You don't see Don doing that that much. Great solos from Chris and Steuart.

When I Stop Dreaming (with Ashley Monroe): I think Don did the you're super hot thingy. You know what I mean. You're on fire. His voice was kinda shaky on this song. I really didn't enjoy this song. Don sounded great, but I just didn't enjoy Ashley's voice. I loved when Don high five Ashley at the end.

The Cost of Living (with Jamey Johnson): Don joked about Merle was on vacation with Willie and Kris. I guess there's an inside joke on that. Great performance. Jamey sounds like Merle a little. Jamey looks he can be a member of the Duck Dynasty family. LOL I loved all the names on Jamey's guitar. I could spot Don's signature a mile away. LOL

That Old Flame (with Martina McBride): Don and Martina were having too much fun. I loved the little glances they made. My favorite part was when Don and Martina did the "just a little cup of kidness" signal with their fingers. It was too cool. Also loved when Don pointed to Chris Holt. He does that with Joe when Joe does a far out solo. He doesn't mind spotlighting his band and that's what I like about him.

Train in the Distance: I love the duet Don and Lara Johnston did on the chorus. She's got a great voice. I love the effects from Will and Scotty. All the instruments were great.

Heart of the Matter: Great performance. I give Don an A for trying to hit that famous high note at the end.

Where I Am Now (with Trisha Yearwood): I love this song. This was in an attitude in your face kind of song. I loved when Don signal Trisha to come over to him. I love the introduction he did for Trisha.

Take a Picture of This: A great performance. The background singers were great on this song. Great guitar solos from Steuart.

She Sang Hymns Out of Tune (with Martie Maguire and Emily Robison): It was great to see Martie and Emily. Emily has a nice voice and also Martie. Its nice to hear their voice singing other than Natalie's when they sing background with her.

Praying For Rain: Great performance. I don't think nobody stood out with their voice. I could hear Erica's, Lara's and Lily's voices more, but the others didn't stand out.

Boys of Summer: Enough said. What a way to end the show. Don was having fun.

The Bonus clips.
Words Can Break Your Heart: I loved the fact that Don and Trisha sing a verse. I think this is how the song should had been from the beginning. Now that makes why makes sense why Lara sings a verse in concert.

Talk To The Moon: I hate that this song wasn't in the broadcast. It should had been. Don was in Texas and they should had this song in the broadcast. Great piano playing by Will.

Overall. It was great and fun. I was singing along throughout the show. I'm sick and I would get choked up when I was singing. Don's voice was shaky in some part of the show and Don sounded nervous when he was reading the teleprompter. It was nice to see Michael Thompson coming from behind the keys and playing other instruments. I'm very impress with Chris Holt.

It was worth the wait.

Just watched the show, and it was amazing! Love how Don sometimes dips his singing voice so low that it turns briefly into his speaking voice for a word or two. It's becoming his trademark throughout his shows and adds a special effect to his vocals.

Really enjoyed the stripped down version of TTTM. It's one of my two favorite songs from I Can't Stand Still.

Shun, many thanks to you again, for posting the link! Loved your review, too!

I really enjoyed the show! I'm amazed that Don got all of those famous singers together at one time to do it!

The thing that bothers me about it is, why have all these different performers when all they do is a very small amount of background vocals or one line in a song? I'm sure all the hype of having the famous people helps out with the sales, but it seems a waste of wonderful talent to me. For instance, in That Old Flame with Martina, Don sings two verses before she ever comes in with hers. She's just standing there watching him for all that time. Trisha's song was the same way. I have to say I think Don and his regular back ground vocalists could have done as good of a job by themselves. I hear money talking!

Don't get me wrong, I loved it and Don. Just sayin'.....

JMO, the background singers are soooo young. I know this has been mentioned before. Great show, as I am sure it is everytime DH sets foot on stage!

I won't be watching this but it seems to me that as with the album, all these guests are overshadowing Don himself. And yet some of the guests are wasted on the album. Mick Jagger certainly is. Dolly Parton, on the other hand....I am bemused by the review above, most of which appears to be about the backing singers rather than Don.

I am just not that interested in male/female duets. Even Leather & Lace doesn't really grab me. I know Don has done these duets before & I never took to them. I have taken to them even less on this album.

I finally got to see Don'S ACL show and I really enjoyed it. He was in great form and I loved the way he interacted with Trisha Yearwood and Martina McBride. To me, It really makes a show when the performer is loving what they are doing and Don was.

The backing singers were not in the spotlight for this show, but from other concert reviews they seem to be doing ok even if they are so young

So it was worth the wait and I hope ACL put the full uncut version online soon.

Can I just say to FP, if you're not going to bother to watch the ACL show and its obvious that you don't like Cass County, why are you commenting on this thread? I would understand if you had genuine criticism but all you do is compare it to AH (which it is nothing like) or complain about who Don is singing with...I don't like AH, but you don't find me on Glenns threads criticising Glenns music or comparing him to Don.
Sorry if I've annoyed anyone with this comment, but some days I just have no tolerance for BS

Well, I wouldn't say they overshadowed Don because he sounds great, but I'm not impressed with duets either. For a favorite artist, I just prefer that it's all about the artist and I don't need the others there at all. I know these things are done all the time and I think, as I said before, that it's all about the money as far as selling it. You get all these other famous artists to make an appearance and those artists fans will also buy it. Don, being an older rock artist trying something new, needed these people to help him sell his cd. Ca ching! $$$ Nothing wrong with that. Just saying, for me, I don't need the other artists to get me to buy his cd.

I tend to agree with you, Lacken. I do understand that people have favourites (I think my username gives me away ;-)) which is why I have never been on any other individual's page. Now of course, I know that might seem extreme but my time is limited because of other commitments so I just look at my own favourites ie: Don and the Eagles in general. I was going to say something about FP's comment regarding ACL but you got in before me. I have never head Glenn's After Hours so feel I can't comment on it. FP, if you have no interest in watching ACL then fair enough but don't diss it if you haven't seen it. As a matter of fact, the show and the album is all Don and if anything I agree with what Brooke says about some of the 'stars' not really being necessary on those songs where they just sing harmonies but I think Don wanted to make a point about the standard of today's country music so for want of a better word, he 'used' his connections to get what he terms 'authentic' voices on the albums, names that people recognise so that they will actually listen to the album. This includes those not necessarily Don Henley fans but country music fans.... But nobody outshines or overshadows Don either on the album itself or in the ACL show - he is the star and it's a really good show. Give it a try, FP and you might actually enjoy it.

I have not, repeat not, compared CC with AH. Show me where I have done so. I do however agree with Brooke's comment above that I don't see the need for all the duets & guest stars. I bought the album & surely that gives me a right to comment on it. I have said hardly anything about what I think about the album as a whole except to express disappointment, which I say again I am entitled to do. It would appear that if I do say anything else I will again be told that I should not be commenting in this forum. despite what you say about 'genuine criticism'.

*ETA: I made one post about AH in the Discussion on CC thread. This was in response to a comparison with CC by someone who is no longer on this board after F50 had said something about it. There were then some negative comments about AH. Since then I haven't mentioned AH in relation to CC. When the CC songs were being released before the album came out, I said nothing. It was others who were saying they didn't like When I Stop Dreaming, not me.

I have no problem with critique - the more the better sometimes  and I also never said you could not comment on the thread if you didn't like CC - but sometimes there is too much comparison regarding Don and Glenn about who does what first or better. I did look for those comments regarding AH and CC, but they are gone.

I never mentioned When I stop dreaming - I don't particularly like that song so it makes no odds to me what is said about it.
What annoyed me was your comment about not bothering to watch the ACL - that's fine if you don't want to watch it, but don't make negative comments about it regarding singers, performances etc if you haven't seen it.
And that's all I'm going to say on this subject

Not by me, in this instance. Please don't put words into my mouth. The comments about the two albums occur at page 36 or so of the Discussion thread.

My comments were really more about the overuse of guests on the CC album, then, if you wish me to put it that way. If you enjoyed all this on the ACL show, fair enough.

Here's Talking To The Moon. TTTM didn't make the cut. I'm still looking for video clips from the taping. TTTM was posted on Youtube on Ocotber 5. So I'm hoping I can find more.

Great piano playing by Will. I see Steuart back there on the keys.

So glad they have this online as well as the other song that didn't make it, WCBYH (which I think is a great song). I recorded the rest of the program on my DV-R and enjoyed it, but I feel like they left off the wrong songs when they cut these two. Thanks shun!

(Side note: I changed the thread title since it's aired now.)

Can anybody justify Don's decision to only perform Talking To The Moon in Texas. I'd love to hear it live but I aint gonna fly to Texas for the privileged.:x

Probably because the intro describes "sleepy little towns down in Texas," e.g. his hometown of Linden and the inspiration behind Cass County. I think the song holds a special significance to him by performing it only in Texas. JMHO.

Today's the one year anniversary of Don during the taping his episode on Austin City Limits.

Don's episode is re-airing on Sept. 28 and 29 on MTVL, which is Ch. 369 on Dish Network. It's an MTV channel that actually shows and plays music. They have Live from Daryl's House, ACL, and other live concert specials. Sept. 28 is next Wed. at 6 pm and 9 pm, and Sept. 29 would be 10 am. The times may be different depending on where you live, but usually when I'm watching TV from like TBS, ESPN, and etc., it comes on 3 hours earlier. Like, Conan airs at 8 pm in the West, when it's 11 pm on the East Coast. MTVL shows promos of its material and maybe some commercial spots, but to me, the breaks are shorter than like TBS and etc. Hopefully, they won't cut much of anything, and it'll be 1 hour long.
