I just got tickets. I am a HUGE Billy Joel fan, although Don Henley is #1 in my heart, so this was a must-see for me. They are balcony seats, which is a little disappointing since I ordered right at 12 noon. I had to check best available and couldn't see what the seats were until I paid. Still, I am quite excited about this!

I did the Select Your own Seat option just to see what the tickets cost. Its filling up quick unless they are holding some of the tickets. If not, it looks like its going to sell out quick.

Made it to the box office just after 5 to see what my chances were of getting a ticket. Got one in one of the last few rows of the orchestra section, finally, after a technical glitch with the computer. The guy selling me the ticket thought they would sell out by the end of the day, and he was making plans to slip in and out of the room while the event was going on because the staff weren't being allowed to get tickets for themselves!
Oh, and very specifically said NO PICTURE taking allowed!

I went on their website to see how well the tickets are selling. This event is almost sold out. Their are only 21 seats left. Maybe 5 handicap accessible seats and the rest are either companion seats or regular seats.

Don's Don Henley in Conversation with Billy Joel will be stream live this Sunday. So anybody that weren't able to go, we get to see this Sunday. Also they should post the interview of the 92nd Street Y website either the next day or later in the week. I don't know how they do their interview videos. I will definitely be on the lookout for the video or audio after the event.

shunlvswx
09-20-2015, 05:30 PM
ETA: I'll be rephrasing a lot of this stuff. So please forgive me if I said something wrong or miss something.

Billy Joel introducing Don. He starts humming Dirty Laundry. It was funny.

Don is wearing a black jacket, black jeans, gray like shirt.

Don and Billy known each other since 70s. He opened for the Eagles in 1973, 1974.

Billy says he's never done this before. He's not Howard Stein, but he's going to try to not pissed Don off since he's his friend.

Why did you decide to stay with the Eagles when you have a great solo career(something like that).
He says its a pleasure and honor to be here in NYC. Home of the country. He says the Eagles was about him. He started start talking about getting back together. He's not the big boss, but he is one of the bosses. He's shares the blame and praises with the band. While with his solo career, he's the boss and gets all the blame and the praises. The Eagles was the mothership that we always come back to.

Were you in a band as a kid?
He was in band. He talks about Richard Bowden and he was in the band with Richard's father. He said when The Beatles came along, we need to start singing. He played everywhere with his band. Then they moved to California. When you are in a band, you want to get away from it, but when you're away from you want to get back in there.

When did you start writing songs?
He started writing songs in 1965 or 1966. He's trying to buy them all back from Ebay. He talks about Kenny Rogers and how they met. They met at a clothing boutique. They were buying bell bottoms. One of the Bowden members talked to Kenny and invited Kenny to come hear them play at a club. He say yes. He was looking for groups to produce. Kenny said he was busy with his tour which will take a year. Keep in touch and we can make an album. They went California, made an single in 1970. Went back to Linden. One of their members died in a motorcycle accident. Went back to LA, made a record, and met Glenn. They were completely green as songwriters and the album wasn't good.

Went on the road with Linda in the spring of '71 for about 3 month. He and Glenn were put a band together.

Billy didn't know the guys were not from California until later. Don brings up that Timothy was the only one from California. Don brings up where everybody was from. Don says Joe is from everywhere. Brings up that Joe graduated from high school in Mount Clair, NJ.

Billy wanted to write songs like the Eagles. Be in the band. Billy brings up JD and Jackson. Do you considered yourself as a singer, songwriter or a musician.
Don brings up he self taught himself to play the drums. He thinks of himself as all of those things. He thought of himself as green as a songwriter. He wasn't a singer at first with his band. He had to learn to sing and play drums at the same time. Everybody had to sing. Don chose a Beatles and he got picked. People asked how did he do that. He said he didn't know any better. He said its more harder playing guitar and singing then drumming and singing.

Billy was fascinated with Don playing drums and singing at the same. He jokes with saying he works harder than all of the guys and he should be paid more.

Billy brings up that they didn't have country music station in NY. Were you in the same studio with Mick?
Don and Mick were not in the same studio. He goes around the question and start naming country singers who had tv shows. Johnny Cash, Glenn Campbell. He brought out Hee Haw.

They tend to put music in boxes and categories. His record company had a problem of where to put his new album in (category that is). Itunes didn't have category. Don hasn't look at a chart in years. When he saw them, their were 19 or 20 different charts. The album has Pure traditional music could be Americana, blues and rock. Their are two types of music: Good and bad.

shunlvswx
09-20-2015, 06:11 PM
Don talks about all the stations he listened to when he was growing up. He says his hometown was 2,500 when he was growing up and now its 1,900. Linden was located where the old south meets the west. Bluegrass, swing and he could get a radio station in New Orleans at night. His parents took him to a Lawrence Welk concert in Shreveport when he was 8 or 9. He snuck backstage and he was only fascinated by the drummer. He saw Lawrence with a bunch of groupies which were nuns in full habit.

Billy starts back East Texas and he didn't see this album as country or as America since East Texas is near Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. Billy starts singing a country song he probably made up which was soo funny. Don says the new album doesn't talk about beer or truck

Don brings the radio station in Shreveport. Louisiana Hawride that he use to listen to. This was kinda the sister show of the Grand Ole Opry. Johnny Cash and Elvis would play that station when they couldn't on the Grand Ole Opry I guess because of their bad boy image.

Don talks about his father. How left the 8th grade to take care of his family. He also went to World War II and opened an auto parts shop after he came back from war. Most of Don's relative worked at the steel mill.

Bramble Rose was the first song he wanted to cover for the album. When I Stop Dreaming. He always wanted to do that song. He wanted to sing it with Dolly and knew she would do the song justice. Don starts talking like Dolly. Dolly told Don, "I know this song. Me and Porter(Wagoner) use to sing this song." So Dolly went into the studio to do the song. Then she said, (Don starts to talk like Dolly) "This key is a little high for me. He said this is the key we recorded in. Then she said, "I guess I have to rare back and get it." She did it in two takes and left. After she left, Don and his production crew stood there for 5 seconds and Don said what the hell just happened. Then it was time for the video. Dolly was very sick and was in the hospital when they did the video. She came out and stay for 6 to 8 hours shoot the video. She thanked everybody and went back to the hospital. He saw her hometown and said it was no paradise. They started to show When I Stop Dreaming. They play the whole video. Don brings up that the Louvin Brothers wrote it and said they were crazy. He brings up a biography I guess they wrote called The Satan Is Real. Then Billy said something like, The higher the hair the closer to God.

Their was a noise in the audience and Don wonder what that was He said something like was that a cell phone.

Billy loves the song A Month Of Sundays. Billy says that song could had been on Cass County. In 1980s, some farmers marched about their treatment and everything. That's how Farm Aid was formed. Don marched on Washington to protest about the farming. He talks about Praying For Rain. He talked about he wrote the song during a drought. Later it rained like hell for 2 months.

Billy brings up that Don has a baritone voice, but sings like a tenor (I'm glad somebody else notice that other than me) and asked Don is he having a hard time singing as a tenor.
Don says yes. He has days when he can hit those notes and some days he can't. He has dropped the key to his songs. He sings falsetto sometimes, but doesn't like too. The Boys Of Summer is one of them. He can not sing that song in the original key anymore. You can sing high in the studio, but its hard when you're tour and singing night after night at his age.

Do you want to write Words or music first?
Don say either or. He's not organize. He writes things in random pieces of paper and put them in a box. Don still uses a legal pad when he writes.

Billy says he lost the urge(My word) to write songs. He brings up it took you 15 years to put out another. What was your uption to write songs. Don writes all the time

Billy asked did he sing in the church choir?
He said no, he was more talking and drawing in church.

He quotes Trisha about songs, "I like dark depressing songs, they make me happy."

Don says tells Billy you're not done. They threaten to write together. Don wouldn't mind writing with Billy, but of course it all comes down to time and schedule.

09-20-2015, 06:41 PM
Don says the great time to write when he's loading the dishwasher. You have to find time to write or to clear your mind to come out with stuff.

If you could one redo in life what will it be?
The vocals on the original recording of Desperado. It was recorded London Symphony. They were bored. He say he was still friends with Glyn Johns. He thinks. The musicians were so bored, they would play chess in between takes.

Billy brought a place called Allentown Nashville. He asked where was that. Allentown Nashville is a little 3 story house that use to be called Jack's Tracks. Garth Brooks bought it and named it after a friend.

Songs you have recorded or written that you wish you could take back.
Pre-Eagles songs. Some songs on the first 3 albums of the Eagles. Not the song but one or two lines of a song.

Are you still looking out for the musicians(National Coalition thingy)?
Don says sometimes. He goes around the subject of Google. He didn't want to talk about it because it was take a while and its not going to change.

Misunderstood Eagles or Don Henley songs? (Thanks for the wording AG)
Billy Joel mentioned Hotel California. Don talked about the church (or pastor) in Oklahoma who thought that the Eagles were members of the church of Satan and had studied under someone who had a group out in California.

Don also mentioned Desperado. Not long after the song's (or album's) release, some guy wrote to the record company, and he thought that the it was about the group that kidnapped Patty Hurst.

How did you get come part of Waldon Woods?
Don brings up they just celebrate 25 years. Margaret Lovelace was the teacher who introduce him to Thoreau and Emerson and he studied more in college. Don turns to Thoreau and Emerson when his father got sick and when he wanted to become a songwriter. December of 1989, he was watching television and heard two guys talked about Waldon Woods. The guys were talking about how the pond and woods were in danger and they were going to build an office park. He got their names. He talked and he wanted to help them. March of 1990 he flew to Waldon Woods and toured the place. He met with Edward Kennedy and Kathi Anderson. She told him they(the two guys) didn't have enough money to save Walden Woods. The rest is history. The lady he was talking to who was working with Kennedy is now his Executive Director of Walden Woods. They have saved 80% of Waldon Woods.

Bette Midler was in the audience. He wanted to thank her for the work she's done.

Don brings up the guy who came from Iran(I remembered that article and guy). He was translating Waldon in his language.

And that's the end. It was an hour and 40 minutes. Don and Billy were signing autographs as they played Where I Am Now in the background.

Talks about a church in Oklahoma that thought The Eagles were part of Desperado. Some kind of army. I couldn't hear that part, but he brought the people who kidnapped Patty Hearst.

I honestly didn't think about taking notes. Thanks for doing that Shun.

A few of my tidbits:

I loved when Billy joked about wishing that he could write songs like the ones on Cass County. The ensuing conversation was very cool and funny.

I'm adding Walden Woods to my "places I want visit" list.

I love Don's idea of how to write a song. If something comes to mind, write it down on a scrap piece of paper, and put in a box. When it comes time to write, go through the box. Also, the "do menial tasks instead of just sitting down with a pen and paper" thing seems like a good idea. I loved trying to picture Don loading and unloading the dishwasher. :hilarious:

He also mentioned advising his son against going into any business where your supposed copywritten material is no longer protected. I understand his point about youtube but then again I also disagree. I bought a ton of music from artists I had forgotten about from the 70's & 80;s on itunes because I saw one of their videos on youtube. I wouldn't have otherwise bought that album if it weren't for youtube. It is a double edged sword.

I've stated my opinion on youtube before. If it wasn't for youtube, I wouldn't be a Don Henley or a Glenn Frey fan. I'd still be a casual Eagles fan. I'm grateful for my uncle playing the Boys of Summer video. I use youtube and other things (mainly Spotify) to find new music and to listen to music on my phone. I buy physical music as much as I can. (I've run out of room for records).

I agree that it is a double edged sword. I have music pals online who get ahold of music illegally. I'm young and I grew up with the internet as it involved, but I can't fathom doing that. I'm glad for the youtube channels that are the artist's name with a hashtag. Ieç #Donhenley.

Hey Shun, kudos for the transcript of the interview! I was sitting there and couldn't think how I was going to remember it all!
Some thoughts on it for me:

Billy started right off with saying he's never done this sort of thing before, interviewing someone this way, and he had a couple of pages of notes to work with that he kept going back and forth with. Luckily he was already familiar with his interviewee!

Don seemed to get more relaxed as he and Billy talked, which was fun because it became more like they were having a conversation among friends, and the slides to impromptu singing of the same line in a song, and the friendly digs about what they did or were doing in their lives were cool!

It's been said in other places here that Don's recall of the past is amazing. It was pretty amazing seeing him do that today. Names, places and dates for some of the things they talked about, YIKES he's got an incredible memory!

Loved how Don was egging Billy on to write more music. There is definitely more in the both of them, and maybe Billy will get a charge out of this encouragement from a friend and colleague. Take little steps Billy, keep writing the music and send it to Don for the words! He said he'd love to work with you!

Ive always been a dreamer

I agree, Soda. Don looks the trimmest I've seen him in a long time. He also looked a little tired, IMHO. I know he's been working very, very hard promoting his new album.

Shun, thanks for transcribing so much of the conversation. That's quite an undertaking!

Well, yesterday was a long, but happy day. We were originally going to stay over last night in Connecticut but decided to drive up and back from Cape Cod in one day. We left at about 7:30 AM and arrived in New York around noon. We got home a little after midnight. The drive was a breeze going in. We had a bit more trouble getting out of the city, but all in all, a pretty easy drive, compared to what driving to NYC can sometimes be!

Anyway, my daughter was meeting a friend for lunch, so I just decided to stay in the area and poke around the street fair that the 92Y had that afternoon before the show. It was a pretty impressive street fair, taking up at least 10 blocks with every kind of food, drink and doodad imaginable for sale. They also had some live entertainment, which was nice. The weather was beautiful for it and I enjoyed it. At one point, I decided to go back to the parking garage to charge my phone. As I was walking back up the hill toward the Y, there were a few people gathered on the sidewalk behind some barriers. Just at that moment, a black luxury SUV pulled up, and Don Henley got out and walked into the venue! He looked straight in front of him and didn't acknowledge anyone, although there were only a few people there at that time and they were fairly quiet. I know I was too shocked to say a word. Since I wasn't in a hurry to get anyplace, I waited around to see Billy Joel. He arrived around 45 minutes after Don at around quarter of 4. There were a lot more people by the time he got there. He was smiling and waving to the crowd.

Sure enough, as we were leaving and walking back to the garage, the guys were coming out. First, Bette Midler walked out to the street and got into a taxi. She said hello to people and had a great smile. She was so cute and down-to-earth. It wasn't but a minute or two later when Don and Billy got out and left in their separate SUVs. There were cars beeping and almost running people over they were going so fast to follow them. I'm not sure if they were stalkers or paparazzi, but it made me feel glad that I'm not a celebrity!

Okay, some impressions from the show:

Billy said he had never done this before but he didn't seem nervous, and I thought he did a great job. The only thing I'd criticize on his end was his introduction. He read it straight from the program. The guy from the Y, in contrast, did an awesome job of introducing Billy. Don was not very relaxed at all, and I think Billy did a great job of getting him to open up. At first Don kept holding his hands in front of him in almost like a praying gesture (much as I love Don, kind of an affected stance, IMHO) or in front of his face, and I wanted to yell at him to stop. He's obviously not comfortable with that kind of a setting but as others have said, he loosened up as the show went on.

We were given blank cards, which we assumed were to write questions on, but no one said anything about so we didn't do anything about them until someone came to collect them. I couldn't think what to write, so I ended up asking "How did you first get involved with Walden Woods?" I was gobsmacked when it was one of the questions asked and SO excited!
And when I heard Don's answer, I was even more so. I felt a few tears coming on when he quoted Emerson and talked about the difference his and Thoreau's writing has made in his life. He talked about WW for quite a while, and I had the feeling he would have gone on even longer quite happily. LOL.

As a (very amateur) fiction writer, I was fascinated to hear those two great song writers talk about their writing methods. I may have to try the notes in a box method. LOL.

All in all, it was a great day. Now I just need to get tickets to one of Don's shows. I really wish he would add some dates - especially one in New England!

ETA: I adore the picture someone added of Don and Billy before the show. So cute!

Congrats Mary for getting your question answered.

My observation from last night's interview and the Americana Festival interview last week. I think the problem with Don having his hands in his face a lot was because he didn't have anything in his hands. He's soo use to having something in his hands. The drumsticks and mike is his safety net to calm his nerves.

Like at the Americana Festival interview last week, he had a mike in his hands and he wasn't putting his hands in his face because one of his hands was occupied. So I'm guessing if Don doesn't have anything in his hands, he gets very nervous in front of people and hides his face then he starts to get comfortable after a while. I notice in a lot of interviews he does, he does do the praying gestures with his hands when he's nervous.

I believe that Mr. Henley would be more comfortable with something in his hands, as well. In an interview with Whoopi Goldberg, she revealed that Henley had given her a fan to hold for her performance of a señorita type song at Carnegie Hall. She was feeling inadequate being on stage with people that REALLY sing... She asked how he knew that she needed something, and why it helped? He admitted to her that it was because he felt that way at times, and that it helped him, too. I had the interview in my favorites on youtube and wanted to attach it. However, it has been deleted, and I can't find it anywhere else. Anyone out there have a copy to attach? It is a favorite of mine...

Other than his hands in his face a lot and rubbing his nose, he didn't seem nervous talking wise, but his body language said a different thing even if he was talking to one of his good friends.

I forgot to add that the volume was terrible. It was very low. I had the volume on my laptop all the way up to 100 and it was still low. I think that was also one of my problems getting everything that was being said. But it was still a great interview.

Shun and Lila, that makes sense about Don's hands. If I were speaking in front of a group, I think I would feel more comfortable having something to hold as well. He should have remembered his own advice to Whoopi! He could have borrowed the drumsticks that he signed after the show for the people in the front row. LOL.

I forgot to mention that our seats were in the second row of the balcony, but my dd and I agreed that the view was perfect. Probably not a bad seat in the place!

Sounds fascinating. Congrats on getting your question read!

Interesting about Don's nerves and his hands. I hadn't really thought about it before, but it makes sense.

Shun, we plugged our laptop into to big screen TV - great full-sreen images and we were able to easily adjust the volume to a better level. If you have a high-def TV you should be able to do it too. Our laptop has an HDMI outlet so it's kind of a no-brainer. We keep a spare HDMI cable handy for just these occasions.

Today's the one year anniversary of this interview. I can't believe it will be one year this Sunday when Cass County comes out.

It was a great interview. Don finally got comfortable more into the interview.

It's so funny that I went to this exactly a year before attending Don's concert last night in Boston. And I think the Eagles' Walden Woods fundraiser in Boston (that I also went to) was pretty close to a year before that!

ETA: This was a really good interview with Don. I re-watched it not too long ago. Billy was such a good interviewer. It impressed me that he let Don talk so much and seldom blabbed about himself unless Don asked him or one of the questions for the Q & A section was directed at him. I think many superstars would have blabbed away about their own careers, but Billy seemed very humble and laid back.

True. He didn't. He say a little about his career, but it was tied into Don.

Some say Billy was nervous and uncomfortable, but to me. Don was very uncomfortable. He kept during the praying thing in his face for half of the interview and he kept messing with his nose. IT was clearly he was not comfortable if even though he was with his friend.

Looking at this interview and then the one he had at the Americana Music Festival, Don seem comfortable at the AMF because one. Don had a mike in his hands so he couldn't have his hands in his face a lot, but he did use his hands a lot to express what he was saying.

But since Don is a shy guy, its understandable because I get like that when I'm around people I don't know and I just don't want to talk to them.

It was a great interview. Billy got a lot out of Don.

Thanks for the reminder shun! I just watched Don singing “She’s Got A Way” from the Billy Joel Kennedy Honors.

That was interesting to hear, but painful to watch. I am an introvert and can read body language quite well and I could tell he was not comfortable. Now maybe if it had been on a smaller stage without an audience, then maybe Don would've felt more at ease. I'm not a hugger, but quite a few times while watching this, just made me wish I could just give him a hug.
