1974... he's playing a pedal steel. On the Border album came out in '74, and on it was a track called "Best Of My Love", and I'm pretty sure I hear steel on that song. Maybe that's what Felder is playing it on. Hmmm... I never knew he played pedal or lap steel. Just mandolin, banjo, dobro, and of course, guitar! :hilarious:

Great job with these, wc. The HFO era was my favorite look for Don as well. He looks pretty good now, but, honestly, I think he's had a little too much "work" done for my liking. This works much better for me ...

As I said, I think Don looks good now, but it's not my favorite look for him. I think his features are a bit too "chiseled" for my liking now, but that is strictly my opinion. It's just my personal preference, but I think this is a more attractive, masculine, and natural look ...

I agree with that. I always thought he looked better with a beard & I was lucky on the one occasion I saw him on the same tour as Christchurch, to see the beard.

To you non-guitarists out there....take another look at the Felder pic with the strat that WalshFan88 is commenting on.

Note the way the amplifier chord is plugged into the guitar. Especially on face mounted jacks, there was a very real possibility of stepping on the chord while moving around on stage and if you stepped on it and made any sudden movement with the guitar, you could literally rip the jack OUT OF THE GUITAR and ruining the instrument.

It wasn't such a problem with the solid body guitars like the Strat, but with the large Hollow Bodied instruments like the Gibson ES-335, it was a very real danger.

To give a little "insurance" against that happening, guitarists would plug their guitars in and then route the cord to the rear straplock between the guitar and the strap. That way, there was some warning feedback if you were just about to destroy your guitar!

From the looks of that cord, Felder may have already stepped on his cord. There is no slack between the jack and the strap. Anyway, it is a habit I have and one that I use even with jacks that are located on the edge of the solid body guitars I play (like the Telecaster).

I learned that "trick" when playing an Acoustic plugged into the straplock after stepping on the cord and yanking the plug out of the jack. Then when I got my Semi Hollow Body with the jack on the front face of the guitar...mounted onto the hollow part...I was very paranoid of stepping on the cord. If I had, the leverage of the plug would have literally broken the jack out of the guitar leaving the entire wing on the guitar nothing but splinters!

They don't worry much about that any more since most of them use wireless and just have a short pigtail cord running from the guitar to a transmitter clipped onto their belts.

It's a good habit to get into though for those of us who do not have wireless equipment.

Mike is absolutely right about the cables too. I use right angles and weave the cord through the strap but nowadays at a gig I am wireless.

I have to admit that seeing the Eagles in AC last weekend, I did miss Don Felder. There is something very special in his guitar playing that I don't think Stewart Smith can duplicate. To me Don sounds cleaner & more intricate & some how more soulful. I especially missed it on ICTYW & Hotel California, as I like the intro Don did on HFO tour!:-(

Don was on AXS Live last night and did a new song (Over You, I think was the name of it.) and Hotel California with an acoustic guitar! He also talked with the host about his career. I wasn't too happy with what he said about the 'drama of being in the Eagles'. He really needs to get over it and move on and quit bringing it up.

The songs were both ok and his guitar playing was stellar, but I can't say much for his singing at all. Jmo.

Yes, I agree that Don looks really great these days & when I saw him he looked very tall, at least compared to Frampton, but I think he is maybe 6'2" or something like that. He is also in good shape & still has nice hair even if it's a little short these days! I mean for his age, he looks really good!:thumbsup:

I also think that he dresses really well, not sure if someone is dressing him, but he always looks so put together & neat!

Maybe I'm bias, but I don't like the plaid. I know its kinda coming back in style, but I don't like it. Probably because I'm an 80s baby too. LOL

I like his hairstyle from the HFO era and today. Their are some pictures I like with his long hair and beard.

I think Don played the steel pedal on The Last Resort on the HFO special. I remembered seeing the camera pan to him playing it and then he's playing the guitar at the end.

Great job with these, wc. The HFO era was my favorite look for Don as well. He looks pretty good now, but, honestly, I think he's had a little too much "work" done for my liking. This works much better for me ...

I really don't think he has had anything done except maybe a brow lift years ago that has held up pretty well. And even if he did have "work", who cares. He is talented, fit, healthy and probably one of the nicest and most generous people in the industry. Look at how much time he has devoted to giving free concerts to charity.

You guys, go back and check, I swear that part where he is singing along is to Victim of Love, the song he was "supposed" to sing and recorded the lead vocal. He really wanted to sing that one!! I feel sad for him every time I see that clip.

I know that his book is totally one-sided and only from his perspective, and I accept that, but I really liked him after reading it. Nothing against the other Eagles. He took some cheap shots, but overall, he just seems like a sweet soul. I like his story. I think he got bad advice to try to go up against Glenn & Don - he was never going to win that one. I wish he had just stayed, made good money, and not let his ego get in the way, but I know he couldn't live with that.

I really like the look of 70's Don F., too!! And his current look!!

Even though this is a video and not a photo, I'm posting it here because we're talking about Felder's looks - just for the purpose of discussing how he looks, not what he says in this notorious interview. I would like to do a screen cap but it's a big pain to post pics from my google chromebook.

Seriously, how ridiculously good did he look for 61? I'm looking and not seeing any cosmetic procedures on him - maybe a little forehead botox or facial resurfacing with a peel or laser, but I think he just has naturally beautiful skin. Who looks like that in their 60s? Interesting how some men really get better with age.

I watchedthe Howard Stern interview this afternoon and was marvelling at how good he looks, especially as he wasn't much of a looker in the 70s. Then this evening I've been looking at interview clips from 1994 and noticed that he had a lot more lines then, particularly furrows on his forehead. I wish these videos would come with full credits for the "facial enhancements" so I'd have a better idea of what works.

I personally think there's nothing wrong with having a little work done, as long as it looks natural. Tons of celebrities do it. More power to him! It's obviously working for him.

It could be that the studio lighting in the Stern interview was particularly flattering and that he had good makeup on. Based on these pics, I'm standing by forehead botox, but no brow lift. The position of his brows and his upper eyelids haven't changed. Maybe veneers, I can't tell, or just teeth whitening. Maybe just clean livin'! The lighter hair brightens his face. He had those dark eye circles in the 70s, but he was hot. He has managed to stay nice and thin.

I agree that Don looked great in that interview that MC posted. However, IMO, he has definitely had some 'work' done. However, I personally don't see that as a bad thing at all. As long as cosmetic surgery doesn't get out of control, and it looks natural and age-appropriate, I say go for it. The challenge is to not overdo it. FWIW, HFO is my favorite era for him.

Yes, that's his fiancee - last I heard they weren't married yet.

I think she meant that by saying he looks better now than he did back in the 70's doesn't mean he looked bad then. Let's be honest, with most guys, most people, if you say they look better at 66 than they did at 26, it generally means they looked horrid at 26. Definitely not so with Don. Maybe it's me, maybe since I'm older now I just appreciate an older 'look', but I have to agree that Don looks better now. I prefer the way Glenn, Bernie, and Henley look now, too. I can tell you that when I'm 66, no one in their right mind would say I look better than I did at 26!!!

Like my friend, the dermatologist always says; look at the jaw & the neck. If there are no jowls (saggy jaw) work has been done. If the neck doesn't look older than the forehead, work has been done. Even liquor store clerks know that trick.

But, I don't understand this dermatologist's theories. Timothy B. doesn't have jowls or a saggy jaw - you think he has therefore had a face lift? A person who has been really thin their whole life isn't going to have jowls. And, it doesn't make sense that the neck should look younger than the forehead. A neck lift is not a common procedure - I've never heard of anyone getting one. Botox is always the first thing a person does - the forehead is always going to look younger than the neck, and you don't need surgery to get a smooth forehead. The face of someone who is aggressively taking care of it is going to look younger than the neck - that doesn't mean they've had surgery.

Dermatologist's theories? Neck lifts are more common than we would like to think. Anatomy 101. The neck ages faster than the face-it has no bone structure with muscles. People don't have cosmetic surgery to have obvious procedures done. They pay the big bucks to look natural. NOBODY, vegan, vegetarian or Neanderthal offshoot is going to escape the power of gravity on earth. One of the sweet things about cosmetic surgery also includes having the hair styled and/or hair pieces are used to mask the face zippers. They have all had work done, its part of their job to look good. The public can believe only entertainers don't age if they want too, but being realistic is a better choice.

Imagine if Randy with his perfect even features had regular cosmetic surgery? A full lift? Felder has certainly improved with age. You can't improve perfection, well I would say that wouldn't I, but I suppose if Randy had stayed performing he might well have succumbed to a bit of lifting and tucking to maintain and improve the image. Whatever, we love Randy as he was and we'd love him as he is now - if we could get a glimpse!
