I thought it might be fun to hear what you are all doing. We seem to have booked an off-the-wall holiday to Oman during February half term. It was impulsive after a recommendation from friends. Apparently it is a beautiful country, unspoilt, friendly, with lovely coral-fringed beaches and a mountainous interior, and you can camp wild. Surprisingly it's a 9 hour flight from UK. The odd thing is, is that when we moved into our house 20 years ago the previous owner had worked in Oman and there is still a big sticker of the flag in our garage. (Subliminal advertising!).

Hubby is Orlando, Florida right now on business. I wish I was there with him! Hopefully, he'll have another worthwhile business trip later this year and I'll be free to sneak along.

Otherwise, only a trip to lovely next door Michigan is planned for the summer (to visit an uncle, and see a race)

Dubai does not appeal to me either, looks overdeveloped and clinical. However, it is supposed to be great for shopping, and you can ski there now!

We had a week in Florida last year, with two days in Orlando to do the two Universal Studios parks. The boys dragged me onto rides I never thought I would survive, and I actually enjoyed them! We also visited the Gulf coast, the Everglades and Key Largo. We saw some beautiful birds (birdwatching being another hobby), including a Bald Eagle really close. (It's a pity the national bird of America doesn't have a more attractive name!) Hope you manage to get on a trip to a good place, Molly, and Michigan should be fun. Is that a motor race you are watching?

As I don't go anywhere all I can do is pitifully beg for someone to buy me a couple of postcards when you are on your travels (and magnets if at all possible).

Kate, yes, it's a NASCAR race. We've been going for years, tho my favorite driver retired after this past season. It may be my last one for a while, at least until I find someone else to cheer for.

And Julie, I doubt my husband will bring anything back from his trip to Orlando for me, but I know he's bringing some things back for you! He called me the other night and asked me if I thought he should pick up some postcards for you. It will be interesting to see what he's chosen.

Oh, it's great for shopping alright - if you're loaded! But that's their main deal - fabulous designer malls everywhere you look and a lovely beach. But if you're not into paying the equivalent of $1000 for a designer purse and get bored after a couple days of sunning, then Dubai is not for you.

I heard about that ski slope they built! They have ski clothes you can rent inside because you can imagine how many residents of Dubai have mittens and scarves, lol.

Great topic gf001 even though I have not made any definate travel or vacation plans for this year as of now. FP - I only learned recently on this board about your love of postcards. Gosh - I wish I had known before because I did quite a bit of traveling this past year. I'll keep you in mind though because I'll be doing some traveling this year. However, I'm holding off making any definate plans until at least spring time (U.S. spring). I'm hoping our boys are going to be announcing that U.S. fall tour by then. If that doesn't pan out, I just may have to jump on the European bandwagon. And yes, in case it's not quite clear, I am planning my life this year around the guys touring schedule. I figure I'd better - I'm making up for lost time and I am pathetic.

P.S. I haven't quite broken this news to my boyfriend, yet. However, he knows me quite well, so he may have already figured it out on his own.

I'm still bummed about not being able to go to Pebble Beach in February! But the good news is that it gives me more money to spend on when the guys tour around here. PLEASE LET THAT PAN OUT.

Vacation, isn't that a lovely word? As I do every year, I plan to spend a week at the Jersey shore in at the end of June and another one at the end of August. These are truly vacation weeks since I leave hubby at home! My sister usually comes to stay for one night each of those weeks, but other than that it's just me, a stack of trashy novels and several bottles of wine!

My in-laws in Las Vegas keep asking us to come out and visit them (it's been four years since we've gone out there), but I'm not commiting to anything until I see what other tour dates the Eagles announce. Hey, a woman's gotta have her priorities!

Yeah Soda - I'm bummed about not going to Pebble Beach too. Maybe, we can make it next year. And as for this fall, fingers have been crossed for two weeks now - can't seem to get them back in their normal position. I'm going to start padding the bank account so I can catch as many shows as possible if the tour happens. I was just about ready to replace my kitchen counter, but the more I look at that '80's butcher block, the better I like it!

Nancy, I am with you---please let the Eagles fall tour in the states pan out!

I just got back from spending 4 days out-of-town taking care of my mother after she had knee surgery. No computer there--talk about Eagles withdrawals. At least I had my I-Pod full of Eagles songs. She is doing better, but therapy is going to be tough on her. (She's 80.)

I am going to the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area for three days the end of February for a travel writing assignment, though, so that should be fun. I may even see some snow!

Dana, glad your mother is doing well. Was it replacement surgery? My Mom had both her knees replaced at the same time. It was hell for a while, but well worth it after the rehab!

lol. I'm the same way as Dana. Being raised in Texas for 20 years, it still blows my mind when I see snow on the ground here in Indiana, even after 3 years! I'm just like "oh, so pretty!" Then I have to dig my car out. lol

Thanks for all the good wishes, guys. I will pass them on to my mom. She actually had surgery to repair her torn meniscus (sp?), the pad behind her kneecap, so thankfully it wasn't as drastic as knee replacement.

Dana, you should suggest your Mum plays a bit less football! Seriously, it's hard work with rehab but if she can cope she will do well, and hopefully be in a lot less pain. I wish her the best. My Mum had a hip replacement two years ago at 78, and still managed to get into the sea with her crutches six weeks later!

Dana, I'm sure having you there with her made the surgery ordeal much easier for your mom. Glad to hear she's doing well. I'm hoping they repaired her knee thru a scope, so that the recovery will be a lot quicker.

I'll bet your mom's a lot tougher than a whiney husband would be!

If I could figure out how, Dana, I'd love to mail you some of our snow. You could keep it, too. No need to send it back!

However, it hasn't snowed here but once this whole winter. However, winter's not over yet. But, if we do get some, I'll also try to send it to you and soda. lol

I'm back after an brillliant week. Not for everyone, but we've had some amazing experiences. Driving a 4WD over unmade roads and into the desert is quite something. We camped on a beach & saw green turtles coming ashore to nest. Spent a night in the sands and got our camel ride - surprisingly comfortable - then an extreme drive out over impossible dunes. The Omani people were lovely; friendly, helpful and dignified.

Now for the pathetic bits: I don't like flying, but perked up when I saw NKIT on the menu. First morning at breakfast, they were playing a smooth jazz record, and suddenly I noticed HC. Boys spotted it too and made pertinent comments! On the way home, first the flight was GF003. Then I found a jewellery stand called M Frey, and hovered around it hopefully Then, I wandered into the music section, and under international music, what do I see but Solo Collection, amongst only about 50 other CDs. It actually made my heart pound! Glenn in Muscat. How can I explain that I was compelled to buy it to 'rescue' it from unappreciative folk!

We got back home yesterday. Had a lovely week in a gite with its own pool, and since the temperature never dropped below 26 degrees, we found a lot of good reasons not to go far! We did visit Rouffignac cave, which had 12,000 year old paintings - mammoths, woolly rhinoceros, horses - amazing detail and some species now extinct. Also took canoes on the river Dordogne through lovely scenery. Hubby and boys took a flight over the chateaux in the valley, but the plane only had room for three (thank goodness), so I stayed in the car and listened to Strange Weather. On the ferry home, I nearly shrieked out loud when they played Wild Mountain Thyme in the boutique! It was on an Irish compilation - I tried to find out what CD it was but the assistants didn't know.

Now for a radio moment. On the ferry home we were having supper when suddenly I heard YBTTC. I have never heard it other than on my CDs, and it must have showed because David asked me what was up, and I had to say "This is Glenn Frey" and try to carry on sensibly, but to be honest it was such a surprise that my hands were shaking and I couldn't even pick up my wine glass!
