I am so excited. I've just found out that POCO are coming to play at a theater in my hometown AND Richie Furay is their 'special guest'. They are coming November 30 so I don't have long to wait. My local hardware store is sponsoring the concert. I told them they can count me as a regular customer now - ha! I also asked if they could sponsor The Eagles next time :D They weren't so sure about that one but I'm working on them.

Okay, so last night was the POCO/Richie Furay concert. It was great and I am now a huge fan of Richie Furay LOL.

Richie was the opening act. He was super friendly, chatty and funny. He sang a lot of the oldies and a few new ones. He was joined by his daughter Jessie and a guy named Scott Sellen (not quite sure of last name). He has a new CD out 'The Heartbeat of Love' (which I highly recommend) and talked about Timothy helping him out on this (he is on the second song 'My Heart's Cryin' Tonight'). You'll be happy to hear everyone cheered when Timothy's name was mentioned.

Then there was a break and POCO came on. They also did a lot of oldies 'Rose of Cimmaron', for example. Mixed in with some newer stuff. Rusty and Paul took turns singing lead. Then Rusty started talking about Timothy and how he was in POCO and said '...and this is one of my favorite Timothy songs' (another cheer went up) and they sang 'Keep on Trying'.

Finally, Ritchie and his daughter and Scott, joined POCO for a few songs. The concert lasted about two and a half hours. Overall it was great. I would highly recommend seeing POCO or Ritchie Furay on his own, if they come to a town near you.

I'm sorry I cannot list all the songs - I am hopeless at remembering titles. I was amazed at how many people cheered whenever Timothy's name was mentioned and how many times his name was mentioned. He's obviously fondly thought of by everyone in the band (despite his break from them).

You can hear snippets of Richie Furay's new CD on iTunes.

The Poco concert was out of this world! They played all the hits and favorites, like Crazy Love, Rose Of Cimarron, Keep On Tryin', etc. Heart of the Night was AMAZING! They put an interesting twist on the studio version, and Jack Sundrud sang it just as good as Paul Cotton. Keep On Tryin' wasn't really the same without Timothy, but it sounded pretty darn good. I especially liked Pickin' Up the Pieces, because the end of the song went right into Grand Junction, which came as a very pleasant surprise to me. Grand Junction, for anyone who's not familiar with it, is an instrumental "jam" song. It's really cool with the acoustics and slide.

Rusty Young was even better than I had imagined he'd be. His dobro, lap slide, etc. skills blew me away. I've always admired his musical aptitude, so it was great to see him perform live! He is also a funny guy... He was cracking jokes the whole concert, and lots of jokes were about the Eagles. He talked about Timothy quite a bit actually! Before they started playing one of the songs, Rusty said, "This was recorded when Timothy B. Schmit was with Poco. Now he's in some other band..."

Firefall played after Poco, and they were very good too. I'm not too familiar with their music, but I know a few of their songs. I'm very happy to say that in their encore, they played Rocky Mountain Way!

I have quite a few Poco albums and I know one is a vinyl of a Poco compilation that's a 2 album set, gatefold and seems like a kind of plain brown cover. I've been YouTubing lots of Poco lately, mainly looking for Randy, and was listening to Paul Cotton earlier today which took me to Wikipedia and Poco's musical history. Like you say in your piece about the changes in their line-up over the years - difficult to follow. Thanks for all the lovely Poco YT links. I shall go there tomorrow and share a bit of my Randy/Eagle love with Timothy/Poco.

Enjoyed reading your article SS. Saw POCO a few times in the early '70's and again in 1990, with the five original members, when they opened for Richard Marx. SS - I read your blog and thought it was very well-written and thoughtful. I think you nailed all of the reasons that the Eagles achieved the mega success that never happened with Poco. My personal opinion is that one of the main reasons may be because of the differences in the way the two bands' personnel changes were managed. IMO, despite all the controversies, the Eagles' personnel decisions were necessary, focused, smart, and appropriate at the times they occurred. I have always believed if they had not shifted musical directions and brought in Felder and Joe, they would not be the legendary band they are today. I love the band's country rock era, but I also love the rockier sound they migrated to. They proved that they could do almost any genre of music at a very high level. But, the bottom line, to quote the members of the band, the primary reason for the Eagles success is simply the songs. I can't really explain all the reasons why - but their songs resonate with so many people on so many levels.

Thanks for all your comments and thoughts, folks. TK has mentioned that Poco’s management turned down Woodstock. Rumour has it that they played a high school instead. Probably not a great career move.

And I agree about the personnel changes. Surely they could have reached a compromise over Randy being there for the album edit but then they might have ended up a completely different band. And what would have happened to Timothy? Would he have joined the Eagles earlier or disappeared without a trace?

Budarz Theater at the Ossining Public Library - Ossining, NY

From Richie:
I want to clarify the May 2 date at the Budarz Theater at the Ossining Public Library - Ossining, NY. This show is going to be Scott, Jesse and myself in a more intimate setting than we have done in a long time - so it is not an RFB concert.

So who would be the main member of Poco in charge of all of their historical stuff - photos, videos, etc...Rusty or Richie? I would like to reach out and ask him if they have any previously unreleased videos they could post. Would it be bad form to specifically request 1970 - 1977? Would it be too obvious what I'm getting at??:hilarious:

Be funny if any of them read this thread. Then you went ahead and asked for that date span and they said 'Right so only with TBS in then?'

I don't know who to ask - perhaps Topkat might know. Rusty was the last man standing I guess so he might be where to go but then Richie might have stuff from that time. Have you asked the Poconut forum?

Ok, so I just listened to a Poco song for the first time... Rose Of Cimarron - now that I know what it is (discovered it through HOTE).... And I'm in love with it. Literally have played it probably a dozen times already. Love the melody and the two vocalists. Going to learn it on guitar soon.

Any other tunes y'all think I'd like (keep in mind I like country-rock but am not a bluegrassy type)? I have "Crazy Eyes" on vinyl, bought it just because of the TBS connection but haven't listened yet. Will be my first spin on Vinyl Friday (my day to listen to records).

WF, another nice Poco song featured in HOTE around the 20:30 mark is Here We Go Again - Timothy in a yellow fringe suit.

One thing to know about Poco is that were best known for their live shows, I guess sort of like the Grateful Dead or Phish. They had a very enthusiastic following and played a lot in the NYC, Philly, NJ area and I think they jammed quite a bit. I have not dived into all of the songs that Timothy sings on/wrote.

A Good Feeling to Know is another of his Poco songs.

Yes you are correct on the connection Austin. I saw Poco about 30 years ago. They were the opening act for the band Marshall Tucker. They blew that band out of the water. Timmie's singing was superb to say the least. The song that his voice comes through so beautifully on is Keep On Tryin. Listen to it you'll see what I mean. Happy Listening. Hey if you are interested I can give you a lot of other bands you could check out from the 70's. I was and maybe still am a music aficionado. I think I have a great ear for good music. I had the TV on, only half watching The Chew, when I happened to look up as they introduced their guests, Analeigh Tipton and Jake McDorman who are starring in Manhattan Love Story beginning tonight. But what really caught my attention was the shirt Analeigh was wearing. It had a large picture on the front and said "Poco" above and "Cantamos" below. I haven't listened to that particular album in ages! It will celebrate it's 40th anniversary this November. It always tickles me to see someone so young (I think she's about 25) who is apparently a fan of the 'classics'! Time for a musical trip down memory lane.

For Secret Squirrel, TimothyBFan and anyone else who has read Richie Furay's book: does it have much Randy Meisner content?

Richie has been quoted saying Randy was an aloof guy at the time and never really fit into the Poco family.

Topkat
03-30-2015, 11:26 AM
Randy spent a very short time in Poco, (only a few months). From what I heard there were disputes with both Richie & Jim Messina on the first album, & Randy was let go, replaced immediately by Timothy who they liked a lot. It seems Tim had an issue about being drafted at the time, so Randy was hired, but By this time, Tim's issue had cleared up & they took him into the band.

As for Poco, as I said in other threads, I just bought Roses of Cimarron on vinyl from my local FYE store. I bought it because I recognized TBS and decided to give it a try. I hope to listen to it tonight. They had another Poco lp, but it was released after TBS left the band (I think the record was the one released in 1982). In another thread, Funk 50 posted Tim's songs from Poco. Here's the list:

Tim's Poco songs are:

(1970) -
Hard Luck*l
Keep On Believin' (sung with Richie Furay)
Hear That Music

(1971) -
From The Inside

(1972) -
I Can See Everything
Restrain

(1973) -
Here We Go Again

(1974) -
Bitter Blue
Just Call My Name
Krikkit's Song (Passing Through)
Skatin'
I'll Be Back Again
Whatever Happened To Your Smile

(1975) -
Keep On Tryin'
Flying Solo

(1976) -
Starin' At The Sky
Just Like Me

(1977) -
Stay (Night Until Noon)
Me And You

Tim's also got a share of the blame for (ie writing credit) for 18 minute indulgence Nobody's Fool/El Tonto de Nadie, Regresa and sings Steal Away and the live version of Honky Tonk Downstairs which he didn't write. Tim's harmonies are present on lots of other Poco songs too.

Tim's performed Keep On Tryin' with the Eagles, Ringo Starr's All Starr Band and solo but the only other Poco song he's performed since leaving the band is Furay's*What Am I Gonna Do? which he was going to sing on the record but didn't.

Thanks for posting my list here, Already Gone95.

I made that CD in August 2007 so there maybe one or two tracks out there that could be added to it. The fact I compiled it shows just how starved of Eagles music I was at the time.

I had to give the CD a listen this week and I did enjoy it. It's really surprising just how many songs Tim contributed to Poco.

Tim's the only Eagle yet to release a Greatest Hits compilation. He's definitely got plenty enough material to choose from.

I'll wait for a Poco expert to verify this, but it's my understanding that they kept Randy's bass parts on the album. They (Messina and Furay) allegedly removed Randy's backing vocals and replaced his face on the front cover with Jimmy Messina's dog - which Randy claimed not to mind "because I love dogs."

Woah! That's so cool. Social media has certainly presented some great opportunities that maybe we'd never have gotten to experience otherwise. I've "spoken" briefly with some of my guitar heroes on Twitter and Facebook, including Don Felder. I still can't play very well, but hope springs eternal :)

Posting on here about the old albums really got me to thinking about it, so I went looking for a few replacement vinyl records. I found some online at a very reasonable price, so I've ordered a few. I'm holding my breath that they arrive in good shape! :nervous:

Speaking of albums. I saw a new copy of Hotel California at Barnes & Noble for $25.00. At least I think it was a new copy. I don't think B&N sells used records. Does anyone know if they are making vinyl copes of the old albums now?

Hi, Topkat! Yes, some bands are releasing new material on vinyl, and it has proven so popular that even old titles are being reissued, in some cases.
BTW, I received my vintage LP copy of Poco's "Head Over Heels" today! I wasted no time in getting it onto the turntable! I was so excited it arrived in good shape. I didn't even think to worry about it until after I had ordered it, but it's so hot out that I feared the heat would affect it. I guess I got lucky and this time it worked out. Yay!

I am enjoying the HOH album, and thanks so much. So sorry you lost some of yours to the sun damage.
I also ordered "Rose of Cimarron." A slight skip on the B side was the only flaw on that LP, and I'm hoping we can diminish that problem with a proper cleaning, which I haven't gotten around to yet.

They are, with the claim that "all original artwork" is included. I wanted the two-sided poster that came with the original release of On the Border, but unfortunately it wasn't included. I also ordered Hotel California from Barnes & Noble and happily it did include the poster.

I still want to get the first album on vinyl. Ahhh, Randy in the firelight. What a beautiful dream.

Sorry, forgot this is a Poco thread!

I still haven't had a chance to play Picking Up the Pieces. Every time I planned to, something has happened. Hopefully, I'll have time sometime in the next few days.

I don't know if I could pay $25 for Hotel California. I paid $5 for copy (original pressing with the writing on the out grooves), but doesn't have the poster.

Would anyone agree that "Legacy" is a good Poco album to try out?

It's not on spotify, but I've heard a few tracks on youtube, and every one has been strong. Not too adventurous stylistically, but strong songs.

It's the first Poco CD I've bought, and I like it very much. There are good songs and good singin' throughout. The production is a little dated, but not terribly, not to the point that it's distracting or detracting from the music.

Rusty digs it too: http://www.mailtribune.com/article/20160421/ENTERTAINMENT/160429943

P.S. The journalist didn't ask Rusty about progress on his autobiography, but it sounds like he's too busy what with the solo album and tour.

For NightMistBlue and anyone else who might be interested, this is a 2015 radio interview with Jim Messina who talks about his time with Buffalo Springfield and Poco, including some thoughts about some of his band mates. It's about an hour long and the interviewer is not very good.

About Richie, Jim says "he could not read a note of music" and "needed a lot more help and support" (at the 23:00 mark).

New interview with Jim Messina where he talks about Randy and Timothy as well as Buffalo Springfield and Loggins and Messina.

About Randy: “Randy was an exceptional pal, we used to have a lot of fun...I remember in the early days we went to a party once at Van Dyke Park’s House...it was a Halloween party and Randy and I went as the Lone Ranger and Tonto...”

About Timothy: “Timmy was super, he came in from Sacramento...had a lot of energy, was really there to work and please...I don’t think we could have gotten where we got with Poco without Timmy...”

“Both of them were exceptional players and people and wonderful to work with.”

The part about Randy and Timothy starts at 9:20.

They are doing a few shows this year for their 50th Anniversary and will have special guests. I doubt Timothy will go, but it would be cool if he did.

Here is a link about their show in Missouri. Don't know if they will be more places.

Ah geez, Poco is playing in my neck o' the woods in February and I thought I had plenty of time to get tickets but I see the show is nearly sold out. Only a few (very expensive) tickets left. Who knew they were so popular?

OT: Fanny, I was going to compliment you on that fab photo of Timmy in a studio (his home studio?) but I changed the Forums skin - if that's the right terminology - and now I don't see it.

Technology, why do you thwart me?!:sigh:
