A lot of you may have noticed that Photobucket images have been replaced by a big "UPDATE YOUR ACCOUNT" image. Photobucket now wants us to pay $400 a year for the privilege of displaying their photos on message boards and other sites!

Unsurprisingly, I'm looking for other options.

Currently, I'm trying out imgur.com (http://www.imgur.com) - I'll do some more investigation before recommending it, though. If anyone else has recommendations about free photo hosting services, please post them here!

More info about the change here: https://www.ghacks.net/2017/06/30/photobucket-now-charges-399-for-third-party-hosted-images/

(Darth Vader Ep. III voice) Noooooo!

Well, at least they're not gone forever. They're just inconvenienced enough to prompt a change.

"For users who are affected by this, it is important to note that the images are not gone. They are still hosted on Photobucket, and you can actually load them right then and there by right-clicking on them and selecting "open image in new tab" or "open link in new tab" depending on the web browser that you are using. This opens the Photobucket website where the original image is displayed."

Imgur is pretty good for Reddit, so hopefully, it works well here!

There's postimage.org but they seem pretty strict about posting copyrighted pictures.

The new Photobucket policy and the way they executed it with little or no warning is obscene, IHMO. Even if they tried to remedy their mistake, the damage is done and I wouldn't use them again.

I registered for Imgur and uploaded an image, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to post here on the board. So, I tried postimage.org and it worked just fine. If anyone has any tips about how to post Imgur images, please help me out.

Is imgur free? Thanks.

It's free.

I added imugr instructions to the Photo Posting Guidelines (you will have to scroll down a bit):

Yes, if they had even warned us it would have been the right thing to do. A lot of what I post is my own photography at this stage so I've registered for postimage for the moment and will see what happens

OK, I just tried postimage and [fingers crossed] it seems very easy. I didn't have to sign up or anything.

It's too easy. I'm suspicious now :worried:

Postimage is easy but I had to sign up (i.e. get a password). The downside to me is that they seem to come down hard if you post copyrighted pics, and how strictly do they construe that? Some copyrighted pics are so common they have become public domain more or less and could fall under "fair use." Also, gray areas like screenshots from bootleg concerts could pose problems.

I do like it though for it's ease of use and you can re-size pics with it.

I just use tinypic.com

I don't know if it's the best site, but it does what I want it to do and doesn't cost me anything.

Let's see if it still works.

Having spent the three months after the last tour practicing, Glenn was sure he'd win all those staring contests with Don. However, what he didn't realise was that Don had been putting in some serious practice as well.

I'm glad it still works now, but tinypic is owned by photobucket (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TinyPic). I'll never trust those guys again!

One suggestion is to use Jing with screencast.com. Both free, although you do need to sign in to Screencast. I use this EVERY DAY at work. (I do internet content writing.). It's a screen capture program, but it's very intuitive and works extremely well. It's not photobucket, but it's a good FREE alternative that definitely does the job.
Here's a cut and paste from screencast.com (Gee, wonder why I picked this one....?) ;)

I had hoped that as a long term PB user I would not be charged $300 when I resubscribed. Sadly I got an email yesterday advising me that I had to renew & that was the most expensive option for what I used the site for. I thought perhaps I should renew, although I wasn't happy about it. But when I tried to renew using PayPal all I got was a 'we are processing your payment' loop. That was yesterday. So they obviously don't want my business. I'm done with it. I was deleting photos anyway because I sadly didn't see the point of keeping most of them any more & now my hand has been forced. I will try the site Soda mentioned.

OK, that is really obscene. When I right click on the photobucket icon I get assaulted with ads and popups before I can even view the image.

Since those pics aren't actually hosted on your site they are basically gone, right? At least until someone reposts with the new service?

What a pain.

I double-checked to see if the old Photobucket pics were back up and sure enough they are! At least the ones I checked on Randy’s picture thread. It’s nice to see them back if only for a short while.
