Shun - THANK YOU - YOU ROCK GIRL !:cheers::grooving::yay:

I agree, I also think Deacon sounds much better on AG. Maybe a little less nervous than two weeks ago. Was it me or was it Tim who seemed to not be blending in on TIE ?

UTW - Thanks for the pictures -loved them.

NOTE: Did anyone make out what Deacon said when he was talking about Glenn ? Watched and could not hear it clearly.

Thanks again Shun and UTW for all the vids and links!!! :D And I agree Deacon sounded even better. I also watched some of the Periscope vids live last night till at least "Orphan Black" was on (as I wasn't going to miss that and get spoiled for what happened LOL). They all sounded great and I love they added in "New York Minute" as I loved hearing Don do that last year when I saw him and does make me think of Glenn now too.

NKIT: Deacon talked a bit before "PEF" about how Glenn passed away in New York and how much he and all of us miss him, but Deacon was glad to be playing there. I got to see this live from the stream too.

Will agree Deacon sounds much better on AG, it was one of very few moments from what I have seen of him at the West show where he looked out of his depth a touch, so it is great to see that he can adapt and improve.

NOTE: Did anyone make out what Deacon said when he was talking about Glenn ? Watched and could not hear it clearly.

Just prior to the solo in PEF?

I really don't know what to say. Thank you guys so much. It really means a lot coming back here and feeling all this love. Some of you may know New York is where by dad passed away so it's a little tender here for me and my family but for you guys for supporting us and these guys have got my back. It's pretty good."

I did end up going to the show and it was pretty awesome. I, too, noticed how strong Deacon was on Already Gone. He rocked it! My biggest reservation about him from West was that he didn't Seem to have a lot of power, but perhaps he's gaining iit as he becomes more confident. He talked about how difficult it was to come back to NY since his dad died there, but the love he felt from the fans and the guys on stage helped him get through it. I had never even thought about that with NY. Sad!

Deacon seems to have such a nice way about him. Fairly confident and self-possessed, but in a natural, not show-off-y way. I was impressed.

I have lots more to say about the show but I only have my IPad and phone with me and I'm a very slow typist on them so I'll wait 'till I'm home on my laptop. Didn't get to my hotel until almost 2 am last night, but it was so worth it!

They were definitely taping the show last night.

It was a beautiful night in NYC!

I think Don said Deacon was seeing a voice coach. So that might had helped and he wasn't so nervous this time. I thought Don and Timothy sounded great and weren't struggling like they were in LA.

I think seeing a voice coach will be a good move if Deacon wishes to continue a music career. He's pretty good as he is, but I think he could still improve a bit. He's more like a '72 Glenn, and we know where Glenn went from there.

Thanks very much for the videos and in particular the quotes from the stage talk. Very much appreciated. I still hope there will be a DVD at some time.

Tim sounded fantastic on LWKUA, in my opinion.

Was it me or was it Tim who seemed to not be blending in on TIE ?

ly.

NKIT - I thought the same listening to the LA show and then I read that Vince sang Timothy's part in TIE. Need to confirm this though. If true it's a dumb move, I would think Deacon would be helped by TBS' harmonizing experience and moral support on that verse. If it's not Vince I guess Timothy forgot to how to sing it the right way. In NY he sang LWKUA like it was 1994. They all seemed much less tight last night.

Hi Mary Calif. ! I so missed your posts here ! Welcome back ! I hope this mean we will be seeing you again.:-):yay:

As I stated earlier, it sounded like Tim to me. Truthfully, I just don't think all the voices blend the way they used to with Glenn. They don't have "the" harmonies like they used to. Deacon did a great job though. Don said in his Q & A that he had only played before 100-150 people before the West concert. Cindy should be very proud of him. He said he was a nervous wreck but you could not tell last night from what I saw on the videos posted.

Shun - Thanks for the posting the review. A incredible review considering Newsday has not usually been kind to the Eagles.

Hey stranger. Its good to see you back, MC.

Vince did harmonize with Deacon on Take It Easy.

I think last night, the guys were less nervous and loose. You have to remember its been 2 years (actually 2 years yesterday) since they played a full show together. So they were definitely rusty two weeks ago.

I'm watching Fleetwood Mac's show on periscope(the same lady who did the Eagles show last night) and Stevie again dedicated Landslide to Glenn and Deacon. She did say Deacon's name this time.

I couldn't make out what she was saying, but it was touching. I remembered her saying something about Glenn standing right behind him last night and two weeks or something like that. I agree with Stevie. He was just there on that stage in spirit.

Maybe their will be a clearer video tomorrow.

Thank you for posting this link. I wondered if the Panorama Festival would affect attendance but then that's a different audience. As I said before, it would be nice if some of Glenn's solo material was performed and the writer seemed to agree.

Thank you Shun and everyone else who posted videos. From the couple I've seen, the band was sounding great. I was hoping Vince guitar skills would be utilized more this time. I see he's still harmonizing with Deacon on TIE during the Randy/Timothy parts.

UTW. Vince sang Heartache Tonight. Remembered in an interview that Vince did, he said he was singing Heartache Tonight, Lyin' Eyes, New Kid In Town, and Tequila Sunrise. Since Bob was there at Classic West, he went ahead and sang it since he co-wrote it with Glenn and one of Glenn's mentors. Vince was suppose to sing it, but they had Bob to come as guest performer for Classic West. I don't know if they asked Bob to come to the Classic West, but they probably did to honor Glenn.

Delilah

True, Shun, it had been announced that Vince was going to sing HT. Chances are it just worked out that Bob Seger was available for a surprise appearance at Classic West.

Here's Seven Bridges Road. They sound nice but I still think it's missing something without Glenn. I guess that's just the way it's going to be. I think Vince is harmonizing with Henley again during the 2-Pt harmony section.

Delilah - I agree. In fact, I think none of the harmonies blend as well without Glenn and do not sound as good. I think SBR only sounds so-so.
As I said in the other thread, I do not think Vince blends well with Don and Tim. Deacon's voice seems to do better for some reason. JMHO, but I don't care for Vince's NKIT & LE. There are certain songs only the original artist can sing and both those songs belonged to Glenn. Vince did a good job on TS. And of course, Randy always owned TITTL, although Vince did a good job on it.

UTW - I guess everyone should prepare for the Classic South in Atlanta and a Classic Midwest in probably Chicago.

I'm glad you said this. I thought the same thing. Their harmonies are what made them unique (and what attracted Glyn Johns's attention back in 1971). It's obvious now that Glenn's voice is what gave their harmonies their richness. If you watch old concert footage and listen to the songs, you can almost always hear Glenn's voice in the harmony. They are also missing a voice singing in the middle...Tim and Vince Gill are singing high, then Henley, but Deacon has a much lower voice than Glenn and they are missing that middle note.

Annoying Twit
07-31-2017, 02:24 PM
If Eagles were to tour regularly, then I think they would improve their harmonies, compared to where they are now. I haven't seen the live concerts, and wouldn't like to judge from youtube videos recorded on phones.

However, if they are just going to play a few concerts per year, then they'll have less opportunity to find a new balance. I do think Vince has the vocal chops to do the job, but it will sound different.

Try Ladydeediamond on Twitter. That's who I was watching on Saturday and last night on Periscope. She probably still have it up on her Twitter and I re-watch from there yesterday when I missed half of it. She has all the shows from last night. She's going to do the REO Speedwagon/Styx next month. Thanks again Shun for Stevie's dedication!!! :D Love what she said and they must have showed a picture of Glenn on the screen too as she was talking as she turned towards them and said "There he is!" and Lindsey was looking too.

From my seat, it seemed Stevie was referring to the sudden roar of a plane overhead during her dedication to Glenn, as she looked up and said "There he is!" A little odd, but, hey, we'll cherish any unscripted moment during a Mac show! :p

I thought the Eagles were amazing on Sat. nite. I'm surprised to read the criticisms of their harmonies on here, as I thought they were as strong as ever. I was very pleased with Vince Gill's performance, and found him to be an inspired choice to fill the tremendous void left by Glenn's passing. Deacon Frey did a nice job, also, although you could tell who had been singing at a high level for decades and who was just beginning his singing career. That's not meant as a knock on D. Frey, just an acknowledgement that Gill is an old pro at this! I can't imagine the emotions that Deacon had to deal with over these two Classic shows, and he handled everything really well, on stage at least. I hope this experience has helped with the healing, for Deacon as well as the rest of the band.

This was the first time I'd seen them perform "The Last Resort" live - one of my all-time favorite songs and I thought Henley killed it. My only complaint was that they didn't do "The Boys of Summer," def in my Top Ten fave songs ever. They did three of Joe Walsh's non-Eagles tunes but only one of Henley's. Odd. But maybe it's just gotten too difficult for Henley to do BOS justice live - the studio version remains one of the most incredible vocal performances of Henley's recording career, and I'm sure it's really tough to try to sing it live. A minor complaint, anyway, especially since they did "Those Shoes," another fave tune I'd never seen them do.

I was glad to see Don perched behind his kit for so many songs - not sure if that's been the norm the last few tours or not (I'd last seen them in 2007). Henley will never be considered a top rock drummer, but he's damned solid back there and I'll always marvel at guys who can sing at a high level while whacking away at the skins. There aren't many of them in the annals of pop/rock!

Henley does BOS in his solo shows, just in a lower key -- he just did it when I saw him in Boston in June. But I counted 9 lead vocals for Don in Classic East, as opposed to 4 maximum for anyone else. Joe doesn't have that many hits for the Eagles, so doing his solo stuff not only takes some of the pressure off Don's voice (which is also critical in back-up harmonies), but is an undisputed crowd-pleaser. Some fans come to these shows just to see Joe's stuff!

I agree about Don on the drums. And I can't believe he does all he does at 70, especially when he starts talking about his physical ailments. Sometimes I think he manages everything by sheer willpower!

ETA: I know I still owe a review on this show. I will get to it soon; I promise! In my earlier comments, I didn't mean to imply that there was anything wrong with Vince's or the rest of the Eagles' harmonies, other than Don's backup being a little louder than Vince's lead in places. They are different from what we're used to, though, and whoever pointed out that they are missing a singer in the middle range is so right. They seem to be working around that, though, with some tweaking of the harmonies. Has anyone else noticed that Joe seems to be adding to the harmonies more than he's done previously?

I thought I was hearing more "bottom" than usual on SBR and I wondered if that was Joe. My main issue with the harmonies was with that particular song (and I conceded in the Classic West thread that it was on cell phone audio so it isn't exactly audiophile quality). Also, it seemed that in Classic West that Vince was singing more of the backing vocals that Timothy usually does. However the video clips I saw from Classic East were taken from far away so it was hard to know if this was still the case. I think it was for TIE.

Even if Glenn's songs were split between Deacon and Vince, Glenn would still have about the same amount as Don.

Hi Blankman. Thanks for the recap. Don has been singing more up front or not behind the drums some of Joe's songs too for a while since the HOTE tour because some songs like Heartache Tonight, Life in the Fast Lane and Rocky Mountain Way he was still playing the drums on those song during the Long Road Out Of Eden tour, but stopped when they started the HOTE tour. He rarely plays them in his solo show and he played the drums in his solo show for the first time since the 90s last week at his birthday concert, but than again. He said he was miserable playing Scott's drumset, but I couldn't tell in videos. He had a left handed drummer and he had to play that drumset when he did a few songs.

I for one enjoyed the show. Of course from the internet, but I thought they were much better Saturday than two weeks ago since they weren't so nervous and they practiced more.

As for SBR, it sounds like they did dropped the key. That is a very high song to sing. I don't know how Don sings that song every night in his solo shows and still sing high. Even if he has his backup singers singing that "sometimes there's a part of me" verse with him, it had to be hard for him to still sing it high. I can't remember if Vince sings together with just Don or with Don and Timothy.

I also notice in one video, Vince does have a teleprompter. It had popped up on the screen. Oops. That's why he was looking down a lot when he was singing lead. He might uses it in his solo show. Its probably become a norm now for singers to have a teleprompter to read the words.

I thought that was the case with the teleprompter. As I posted (somewhere?), it was noticeable on HT. I know a lot of singers do use them. I remember Billy Joel commenting that Elton John used one, and Billy found it a little distracting when they toured together. But Vince hasn't been singing these songs as long as the others, so he most likely needs it, at least for now. Don, Joe and Timothy could probably sing them in their sleep at this point.

Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but what kind of merchandise are they selling? Do they have Eagles shirts with Vince and Deacon on them? Programs with the new lineup?
Old shirts with Glenn?

I didn't see any programs at all, just posters and t-shirts with the Eagles logo, both alone and listed with the other 5 acts. I didn't see any band personnel named on any of the stuff they were selling, just "Eagles" this and that.

I wanted to gather my thoughts before making any comments on this concert. First I want to be thankful that I had the opportunity to even attend this show as I feel it was such a blessing.

All week they had been threatening thunderstorms for Sat. which was just freaking me out, but as the day approached it was slowly clearing up & no rain ever fell that day & evening. One thing that happened was, that because of the weather predictions, tickets on StubHub started to appear at lower prices & I was able to upgrade my seats to section 107, first level near first base.!! Yippee.

I also want to comment that any videos you have seen, have no comparison to the incredible sound system at Citi Field. The sound was one of the best I've heard...

The Doobie Brothers & Steely Dan each played about 1 hour 15 min with 1/2 hour break between sets...When the Eagles hit the stage the sun was just about to go down, but was peaking through the stadium for a brilliant ray of sunshine which was an omen of what we were about to see!!

They opened with the lovely Seven Bridges Road & the harmonies were perfect.. I won't be reviewing each & every song, just my general feelings about the show. Deacon sang lead on Take It Easy & he was humble & sounded very good. Let's not forget these shows are the first time he has ever played for more than about 100 people... Joe made some small talk about a warm family welcome & the crowd responded with huge applause & I believe that may have been when they put Deacon's name on the jumbo screen...

I must admit that I was not that familiar with Vince Gill. Of course I knew his name, but I'm not a big country music person. I didn't know what to expect with his addition to the band, but I was very impressed with his vocals, & having an extra guitar in the band made for a richer & fuller sound to some of the songs. Joe also added some extra guitar work changing some of the songs, I know on Witchy Woman & another song, I can't recall just now.

I was thrilled to hear New York Minute added to the NY set list as it's a song we haven't heard live in a long time. Also Those Shoes & The Last Resort were great to hear.

Deacon took the lead for PEF & spoke very briefly about his dad passing away in NY & that it was a bit tender being here but he felt the love & support of the crowd & the rest of the Eagles. At the end a lovely large photo of Glenn appeared on the jumbotron to a huge applause & roar from the audience. It was a bitter sweet moment...

They played all the hits we were expecting & then some, so the concert was well thought out & executed with perfection.... There was the additional 4 piece horn section, used for some songs, like NY Minute, a string quartet & the usual backing musicians. I couldn't see all of them that clearly.
I had binoculars with me to get an up close look at our guys!

Joe was wearing a longer black jacket & it looked like he was wearing silver sneakers??? I'm not sure if that was the lighting or really silver...
Tim wore a black shirt with white polka dots & black vest, which he later took off. They all seemed a little dressed up, I mean for them as they are usually very casual. Deacon wore what looked like a small checked grey button down short sleeve shirt. Henley wore his usual plain greyish shirt...
Vince was wearing a back suit or jacket with black pants.

Last song before the encore was Life In the Fastlane, sounded great as usual. Don was in excellent voice. The crowd roared for the encores. Hotel California began with the horn section intro, which I do love. The second encore was RMW & they ended with Desperado, as expected.

I have to say that the NY crowd was very enthusiastic & were on their feet much of the show. Even though people were singing, the sound was loud enough that the Eagles could be heard LOUD & CLEAR..

I was so thrilled I went to this show, as I wasn't sure what it would be like. I was happily surprised. They played a full 2 1/2 hour set.
I am thinking that this is the start of what will be a tour for 2018..
I loved every second of this show. In fact my fiance said he liked it better than the HOE show that we had seen. I did as well...
That's all for now! :grouphug::grouphug:

On facebook, I saw them selling merchandise that said Classic West/East, but I don't know about their merchandise. That's a good question, BillBailey.

The merch table was mobbed. I was able to get the Classic T shirt which has all 6 band names & logos, with the dates July 29 & 30th
The back has the NYC skyline & New York Citi Field with the band names each under the dates they performed. 2017 CLASSIC East
There are no pictures of the guys on the shirt, but I felt I had to have it!!

I was looking for a program, but I didn't see any. I saw that some people had posters rolled up, but I didn't even see them.
During the band breaks the lines were long for merch, food, drinks & bathroom.

The other merch at the table were band shirts from each of the bands,,
They had several Eagles shirts, like Hotel California & the yellow shirt with the licence plate on it. I had several of the Eagle shirts that were there. I didn't see older shirts like OOTN. They had a lot of shirts from Doobies, Steely Dan, EW&F, Journey & Fleetwood Mac also. I don't think they had sweatshirts, but I think there were some long sleeve T shirts.

It was really hard to see the other smaller things at the tables because it was just so crowded.

The posters were kinda cool, but again no photos or band member names. Just fancy lettering of the band names, location, "The Classic," etc. I didn't buy one - if memory serves, it was $40! - but I'm pretty sure this is the one that was sold there:

I just wanted to add a few more comments on what I saw & experienced that night at Citi-Field.:inlove:

Citi-Field is only about 5 minutes from my house & I often go see Met games there, so I know the stadium pretty well.

I want to stress that people should not judge the concert from the many phone videos that were up for a short of period of time, because the sound system there was truely spectacular These videos didn't do justice to the vocals. I have seen some criticism of the harmonies, & to judge them from unprofessional videos is just not fair...They sounded spectacular!!!
I did see professional photographers filming the show, so I wouldn't be surprised if they will make a DVD of this show, as it was a milestone in the Eagles legacy...

Now, as for Deacon Frey. I can't describe the feeling of seeing him up there. I only know that I could hardly take my eyes off him. It was not like seeing Glenn up there, but it was mesmerizing to see this young guy, so calm & so talented, filling in for his dad.

I can only almost compare it to when I saw Dahani Harrison up there playing with the big guys in a tribute to his father. Being on the stage with the likes of Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Prince, Paul McCartney, Bob Dyan & many more of his dads friends & collaborators & he being the young look alike of his father.

I can only say that Deacon was special, spectacular & yet so unassuming.... I felt all eyes were on him, not judging him, but just in awe of having him up there & doing this... It was a very special evening. I think Deacon can be proud & that his dad was smiling down on the stadium & blessing us all with his approval!!! I mean you could actually almost FEEL it..

That just sounds wonderful Topkat. You could get a sense of that with Deacon from watching the vids but wouldn't compare to actually being there. Same with the sound as online videos and live TV never do it justice and usually do sound worse than it was.

Thank you for you reports on the show, TK. Your comment about not being able to take your eyes off Deacon made me think of the photos from the West show. I think there were more pictures of Deacon than all the other band members put together. (Of course, being young and pretty doesn't hurt). Lucky for Deacon - and the band - that he has that quality.
