That was great Willie!! There's something like that for Oklahoma too. I'd have to do a little research and find it. It goes something like "You know your from Oklahoma if..."

The weather in Oklahoma is just crazy. When I left for Florida on the 28th it was snowing and icy and when I got back it was in the 70's. Except for the occasional rain, the weather in St. Pete, FL. was really nice being in the 60's and 70's and when I got back my cousin called and said that it was in the 30's. Go figure.

Very funny about the Indiana weather...I actually had no idea it was so brutal there! It sounds kind of like Maine or somewhere like that!

Now PB has got me remembering that long ago, a good friend had emailed me something about "you know you're from NJ if..." I'll have to see if I can dig that up out of the archives! It wasn't only about weather, either!

I think those of you in Indiana got the rain we had here in Oklahoma yesterday. It was a nice, sunny day today. Yesterday was just yucky with storms all over Oklahoma. There was even a tornado in southern OK, about an hour and a half south of where I live. There were reports of it being a half mile wide. Scary!!!

Our spring weather was short lived. Back into the 30's which is still better than what we had a few weeks ago. No snow, so I can still see the backyard again-that's cool--love mud! Winds were so bad last night that Dillon found one of our shutters in the middle of the road when he came home late last night after work.

I'm going to try to post a few pics of the recent ice storm
we endured last month here in Kentucky. It was unbelievable.
There were downed tree limbs, trees, and power lines everywhere.
Most of our county was without power for days. I personally was
without power for 5 days at my home (and we have underground
utilities in our subdivision). Some people didn't get power for 3 weeks.
I work for a major drug store chain and we only missed one day due
to no power. The company managed to have a generator shipped in
to give us power within 24 hours. Gas, kerosene, and propane were all
in short supply and you couldn't get a size C or D battery anywhere in
this town. It just made me realize how unprepared we are for a major
disaster around here.

Those are beautiful pics of the ice Rick. Thanks for sharing. I hope those trees weren't yours.

I also hope they've gotten the power back on for everyone. I went through and ice storm very similar a few years ago and lost power for 4 days and that was more than enough. It's terrible. I've heard there are still people without power and it's been like 3 weeks. I can't imagine.

Wow!!! Those pics are amazing Rick!!! Ice storms are so dangerous and yet so beautiful at the same time. I went through one in 2002. I remember thinking that it looked like a winter wonderland outside. It was so beautiful. We were without electricity for 2 weeks. It was quite an experience to live that way without the luxuries of electricity. Really puts a lot of things into perspective.

Rick - your pictures are stunning. As others have said, it amazing how Mother Nature can spread her wrath in such a beautiful way.

Some of the comments here regarding the weather extremes reminds me about how much I used to complain. Here in Virginia, we can get extremely cold (sub-0° F) and extremely hot (100° F +). I spent over a year in Florida in the late '90's and I remember thinking how I was going to love the year-round warm temperatures. However, to my amazement, I really missed the 4 distinct seasons that we have here. So now, I realize that I can't complain (but sometimes I still do)!

Wow, there's a lot of snow in those photos, Koala.

Cape Town is misty, overcast and windy today, but still warm. The temperature reached around 36 degrees celcius yesterday, with virtually no wind.

Our part of the world has sadly been struck by several fires this summer, exacerbated by the heat and wind, and arson is suspected. Two of our most prestigious wine farms have been affected by the fires. A fire in Somerset West has been raging for the last two weeks, and fire fighters have tirelessly dedicated themselves to the task, day and night. This follows a fire that broke out in Paarl (also wine farm country) in December, which destroyed many hectares of land.

Houses and possessions have also either been damaged or destroyed in the fires. Fortunately, I am unaware of any loss of life.

They had to place explosives on an ice jam on the Missouri River because it was causing the flooding. Unfortunately I don't think Fargo is goin to be as fortunate! It's not looking good!

The wind here in Oklahoma has been brutal today. It has caused many wildfires all over the state and many people have lost their homes. Winds are moving at about 20-30 mph with windgusts up to 40-45 mph. I did see on the news that the winds are starting to die down a little bit but firefighters are still working hard to put out all of the fires.

All happening during the AI show, which I kept trying to watch as the satellite kept losing the signal! So, digital TV is progress? We never had this problem before with analog! :-x I should have been in the basement, but I'm one of those that just has to see what's going on out there!

Kirksville is about 60 miles northwest of me and they had a lot of damage and 3 people killed. A storm chaser from there was actually on the Weather Channel. Looked pretty scary.

My immediate area avoided damages, but got an inch of rain, which we didn't need. The farmers are desperate to get their fields planted, but it rains again just as they get started.

A Kindred Spirit! You can always tell those of us raised in this part of the country. Dangerous in a way to be so passive, but a lot of us are. We had warnings for southcentral and southeastern Kansas last night too.

At 5pm, I was on the golf course and could see the Anvil Clouds glowing in the reflected sunlight of the afternoon to my South and East. Majestic! I do pity the folks that were getting nailed by that particular storm though.

Golf was interesting in wind gusts of 30mph on the course.

I feel your pain, AZ. I remember back in the '90's that I was working in Dallas and there was a similar 3 week period with 100+ temperatures. It was one of the most miserable 3 weeks of my life. The coldest I can ever remember was when I was working in St. Louis (in January 1996, I think), there was about a 5-6 day period of temperatures between -20 and -30. That was pretty miserable as well. That's why I like the climate here in Virginia for the most part. We can have temperature extremes ranging from subzero to 100+, but very rarely does it last over 3 or 4 days at a time.

The weather turned nasty on Sunday after a week of sun (albeit accompanied by cold), and it's just been howling wind and rain since. It clears intermittently.

But it ain't good walking even a course as short as this one in 100* temps. Ironically, I shot the best round I've ever shot on that course, a 59 on the par 58 course! I usually have it together for half the round and then lose it on the other half. Just happened to put it all together for one complete round.

Oh how I remember July airshows here in Kansas. McConnel Air Force Base is located here and they would bring in the Thunderbirds, the old restored WWII planes like the Mustangs, Spitfires, Zeros....never did see any German planes though. But I would take my Cub and Boy Scouts to the shows every year. Nothing but Tarmac and 100* days. Worth it though to see those planes...both old and new. We got one of the first looks at the F17 Stealth Fighter and the B2 Stealth Bombers (the Batwing!) The B1B's were stationed at McConnel for years. Before them, we had a large squadron of F16 fighters based there. Our house was sometimes in the landing pattern and I knew one of the pilots. He would have to fly one "mission" every month during peacetime and used it as an expense-paid trip to New York where his family lived. He would call when he was coming back to Wichita and we would jump in the car and drive 15 or so miles to a friend's house in the country. They are not allowed to land with over a certain amount of fuel and have to burn it off. He would "burn" it over this friend's house doing rolls, verticle maneuvers, straffing runs....in other words, we had our own private air show! He finally had to stop. Neighboring farmers complained to the base Commander that they were flying too low and scarring their cattle!

There is a long line of what look to be pretty potent storms between Wichita and OK City. I snapped a picture of a huge anvil cloud south of us. Doesn't look like it's going to hit us.

Thankfully our weather has cooled down somewhat nearer to normal temperatures. It was difficult last week with the kids I look after, they just aren't used to those sorts of temperatures.

Beautiful weather. Pretty much as SL described! I've spent most of the weekend at my sister's place in the country, dog-walking and pub-lunching. It was heavenly!

It is HOT HOT HOT here in Oklahoma. It got up to 101 today and it still feels like an oven outside right now. It's suppose to be 100 tomorrow.:worried:

It got up to 109 degrees today. This evening my dad and I were sweating away as we were waxing my car and we had the radio going. Just before 9pm, the dj comes on and says that we are "finally cooling off at 96 degrees." My dad and I just looked at each other and laughed. That dj must not be from Oklahoma if he considers 96 degrees as "cooling off."

96 cooling off huh? :hilarious: Yikes!!!

I heard on the news this morning that so far this July has been the coolest July in history in our area since they started keeping track of that over a 120 years ago. I'm ok with that!

The high today in Wichita was an actual 98*. But when the temp was 90, the heat index was 100* so at 98* I would suspect the index to put it over 110*. It was pretty horrible. Humid. BAD HUMID. We had to spend most of the day cleaning up after Wednesday's hail storm. Broken limbs and leaves. It was NOT a day to be outside unless in a swimming pool. While in it, we noticed that there were two places on the liner above water level where hail stones had punched holes in the liner. We have it taped, but it would not surprise me if we didn't have to drain the 20,000 gallon pool and replace the liner! I'm hoping we can hold off until Fall AFTER we've "closed" the pool for the year.

That's too bad Mike. Maybe you've fixed the leaks for good.

I love summer, but I hate high humidity.

It's been a 8 days since the hail storm. The adjuster finally got out here today. There were thousands of homes damaged from hail up to the size of baseballs. Those hitting our neck of the woods were about golfball sized.

When all was said and done, the adjuster cut us a check for almost $9,000 but since we have a replacement policy, there is another $3,000 or so that we can collect from the depreciation as we replace the damaged parts.

Three of the four sides of our roof was so badly damaged that it has to be replaced. The siding on the east side of our house must be scraped and repainted. The guttering has to be replaced. They adjust replacement for a metal patio cover because of the dents in it. I put that on myself and when I did, I bought the heaviest gauge material I could find because we had a fiberglass material on it before. You can hardly see any damage at all on that tin from the underside!

They are paying for replacement of the liner in our swimming pool, and they said they would pay to replace the water (20,000 gallons as well!) but I don't think they realize the problem in emptying the pool. We are NOT allowed to pump the water into the sewer system so our only option would be to run a long 3" fire hose from the pump out into the ditch in front of our house. Can you imagine the MESS that would cause downhill from us <LOL>

Not sure what we are going to do. For sure, we'll replace the roof and new guttering is a really good idea. But, the patchwork on the swimming pool liner is holding up really well. The adjuster could NOT get the tape off to inspect the two bad tares in it and just said the only thing he could do would be to replace it.

I really do NOT want to face that with the swimming pool. If we take the liner out and replace it, at the same time, I would want to pump up the concrete corner of the swimming pool that has sunk. The contractor who poured the deck did a very lousey job of preparing the foundation for the deck before he poured and finished it. He is no longer in business so we have no recourse.

Wow, Mike. Sounds like you have tons of work to do, but at least the insurance is helping out. I hope it covers your costs. Best of luck.

We have the more expensive "replacement value" on our home insurance. But the question is "whose" replacement value? The actual replacement value or the replacement value established by the claims adjuster? I've got to call the insurance company today and find out.

The monsoons have finally hit. We have had rain for the last three days. The humidity is terrible. It dropped the temp from 106 to 80 in about 30 minutes. Today the town that we live in had a celebration called Day of the Cowboy. It rained and cooled everyone off so it turned out great. Better that trying to have fun when it's 100 degrees.

My Mom used to cook up veggies and meat and freeze them in serving sized containers. She'd can tomatoes and all from the acre sized garden we had. When you were ready, thaw out the veggies and meat and open a jar of canned tomatoes, mix 'em together and wah-laa: Vegetable Soup!

Beans, peas, corn, strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, peanuts, onions, lettuce, asparagus, okra, tomatoes....Man it was good eatin'.

I miss the fresh veggies...but I don't miss weeding and pickin'...and the beating I took from the rototiller.

We had the most beautiful thunderstorm today. I know doesn't sound right but once it began to move out and the sun going down there were two small thin rainbows and as we were coming down the bridge we saw another rainbow burst from end to end. This one must've arched the entire city. The colors were the boldest I've ever seen. Just beautiful. :)

Well, I just spent an hour and a half in the bathtub thanks to a tornado warning! I didn't want to wait to the last minute to get in there because I wouldn't be able to grab my cat in time if it hit. So, I corralled Milton, took him into the bathroom, and waited until the storm passed. Now that it has, Milton and I are so glad we can get out of that bathroom. It's very small and gets as hot as a freaking sauna with the door closed and the lights on!

Wow--Soda---I bet that was scary!! I hate those kind of storms. I don't mind a little rain with thunder and lightening but tornado sirens aren't fun at all.

I friend of mine over in Portage/Chesterton area says that her girls don't have school today because the roof is off the middle school and so many trees down because of the tornado that touched down there, and they just went back yesterday.

Question for you all. How serious do you take the warnings and stuff when they flash it on the tv? The reason I ask is because I remember when I was a kid, I lived in a rural part of Indiana that had serious tornadoes every year and you could tell when the weather was about to become really bad. Back then, if you heard a warning on the tv---you better take cover FAST because there was really one coming. Now it seems there is a warning because of "possible rotation" in the clouds, etc. And the sirens go off every time, whether it's in your area or not, I understand it just has to be in your county somewhere. It drives me nuts! I have somewhat become one of those that unless I can see it is really really bad, don't do anything. I'm afraid it's like the boy that cried wolf, no one believes it any more because they do it so often and eventually it's going to catch up with us and there will be one that no one was prepared for because we had heard it so many times before and didn't take heed.

When I heard about the Beaumont tornado last night, I thought about you too, Soda. And when I heard about the ones in Indiana, I thought about you and TBF.

Willie, I know what you mean. We live in a rural area and I'm home alone alot at night and I bought one of those weather radios because I wanted to know in the middle of the night if a tornado was coming. Well, all I do is get up, listen, turn it off, and go back to bed! They go off even when just 'watches' are put out. Flashing light, ear piercing siren! So they can be very annoying, to say the least. If there is a warning, I will go look outside, but if all seems well, back to bed! So, why did I buy it?!
