Please send us some of that rain Ga. We need it sooooooo bad!

106 F for a high here today. Hot! I'm staying in as much as possible.

VAisForEagleLovers

It was 105 here, now down to about 102.5. The pool temp is a nice refreshing (not!) 90 degrees. In the ten years I've had this pool, the warmest it's ever gotten without using the pool heater is 86 degrees. I can honestly say, shockingly, that I'm actually looking forward to Monday. Can't say as that's ever happened before without it being a holiday. At this point, 82 will actually seem cold.

Now, it's rain we need. All the crops around here are nearing death. Actually, the farmers are thinking it's too late for most of them.

Possible good news in our forecast today. They are calling for a slight chance of rain this afternoon. Suppose to be scattered but we've got our fingers crossed. It's still suppose to get up to 95 (which is actually cooler than the last couple of days, 105 yesterday and 100 Monday). This is insane!!!!!!!!

Severe thunderstorm warning here right now. Saw some lightning on my way home but no rain...yet.

Topkat
07-18-2012, 05:20 PM
We are now getting huge lightening bolts & thunder & rain. I hate to sit near the window during this because I have metal furniture on my terrace. It scares me:worried: My window is floor to ceiling & I am afraid to be near it during the lightening

Brooke
07-19-2012, 09:32 AM
106 yesterday on three thermometers at my house. The forecast says a slight cool down tomorrow to 93 and then back up in the 100's for next week. We missed the slight chance of rain early this morning. Just hearing a little thunder was nice though! I guess it's just going to burn everything up. We have been watering everything like crazy and are getting sick of it, but if you don't it'll be toast. Ugh! :-(

Tk, you shouldn't be near windows during lightening! Be safe!

103 here yesterday and projections for 105-106 today. Not quite noon yet and we're already at 95! Lots of wild fires throughout western SD and little chance of rain in sight. Obviously lots of concerns with Rally about to kick off. Bikers + booze = potential trouble under the best of circumstances. Most of these folks camp out but there are closures at some of the sights due to high fire risk. This is going to be an interesting event and I'm anxious to see what the attendance numbers will be.

Raining, 82, and about 4000% humidity here. That may be a slight exaggeration, but that's what it felt like. Still better than 100 degrees and way way better than 15 and three feet of snow. Helps to keep it all in perspective!

 100 degrees?!

100 degrees F has been the norm here since summer began June 21st. We, and many other parts of the country, are seeing no relief.

When the snow is flying, I always look forward to summer. My mind sees outdoor sports, barbeques in the back yard and warm nights spent listening to music on the deck with my husband and a bottle of wine.

When summer finally gets here, it is aften too hot and humid to go outdoors and enjoy any of those things.

Brooke

warm nights spent listening to music on the deck with my husband and a bottle of wine.

Pm, this is what we do nearly every Friday and Saturday night too! Lately we've had to wait till around 8 pm to go outside tho, it's been so hot. We've been going out to eat early and by the time we get home, it's better. We hate it when it gets too cold to do this. In the fall we sit by out fire pit. Can't get enough of sitting outside and listening to good music!

Cathy, I would happily send you some of our rain. We have had heavy rains last week and this week, so we have plenty to spare!!

Having said that, I managed to get away on Friday for a night's camping in Rotorua prior to a dog agility event on the Saturday. It's midwinter and was pretty cold down there (3 hours drive from Auckland) but the rain held off for those two days, so I was very grateful. It would NOT have been fun trying to put up a tent in the rain!

The heat and drought continues here. I had 107 F yesterday and it's supposed to be 106 today. I've been trying to water my tomato plants to keep them going, but I give up. They have been great while they lasted, but it's just too darn hot to be out there trying to do it. Our county is under a voluntary water conservation order now, so I guess I'll comply. :-( It doesn't look very good for water company personnel to be wasting water! lol

Now...teachers usually LOVE snow days just as much as students :partytime:

However...2 years ago we wound up missing 15 days (13 allotted + one "lost" inservice day + one Saturday School day!)...the allure kinda wore off that year!! :-x

Plus we ended that year with a day off for tornado damage?! :eyebrow:

I dunno...I love fall...I don't want football season to end yet :partytime:

Friday night and last night it froze all my flowers and vines in the deck boxes. I hate to see them go, but I'm really sick of watering them! 32 this morning with a high of 53. Trees are turning colors pretty fast this year, due to the drought I suppose.

First fires in the fireplace too. That I like! Very cozy!

I STILL have my pool open, once I realized that our usual October weather wasn't going to appear, I called and next week was the first available appointment to close it. So the temps are to go below freezing tonight. Just got in from going out and setting the timer to run the pump all night so that nothing in a pipe freezes.

I meant to copy the link and forgot, but apparently one of the Farmer's Almanacs and Accuweather are predicting a very snowy winter for all 'Interstate 95' cities, it listed DC and all cities north.

The forecast this morning for where I live is better than before. We'll see how it turns out. Sitting near the PA Turnpike earlier, eating brunch, we saw three trucks from one power company (The Illuminating Company) pull into another restaurant as ones from another were pulling out and getting back on the Pike. Obviously all on their way East to help with cleanup. Very sobering.

I'll leave after the Steeler game and stick to interstates to avoid surprising flooding, but so far, it's just drizzle here in Western PA.

Were waiting for the big storm to hit. So far things are calm, but tonight, the winds & rain will be kicking in. I'm clearing the furniture off my terrace, (always a huge pain in the ass) The mayor has cancelled all public transportation for tomorrow, so I will be off from work.
Just hope it's not as bad as they are predicting!

Henley Honey
10-28-2012, 02:22 PM
It's the calm before the storm -- literally. We are as prepared as we can be. We have water, candles, flashlights, non-perishibles, cash, and a full tank of gas in case we have to bug out. We are in the center of Nassau County on Long Island and so we will not be dealing with any direct storm surge from the Atlantic, but the winds are supposed to be upwards of 75 - 80 mph so we are sure to lose power and a tree or two. We are about 13 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and about 10 miles from the Long Island Sound.

Several relatives (about 20) are under mandatory evacuation. They live in a little beach community called Breezy Point which is the peninsula west of Long Beach. It is surrounded on one side by Jamaica Bay and on the other by the Atlantic ocean. It's probably a mile wide by two miles long and so will almost definitely sustain major damage. My mother has a house there, but she is safely tucked away in Florida for the winter.
They are expecting the worst of the storm to happen Monday evening into Tuesday morning, and unfortunately there will be a full moon and high tide so there will be massive flooding in this tiny beach-front community. My sister and her family will stay with us. She is a nurse in a hospital about half a mile from here so she will be on call for the duration. I hope her house is still standing when all is said and done.

I hope the forecasters are blowing things out of proportion, but they are saying that this will be an unprecedented event. I don't ever remember lower Manhattan being evacuated, but the evacuations go from Canal Street downtown and extend as far north as 125th Street on both the Harlem and Hudson River sides. Unreal. Mass transit is being shut down tonight and the bridges will close as necessary when the winds exceed 40 mph.

I expect we will be without power for several days but I will sparingly power up the laptop and check in. I've powered up my ipod, cell phone and kindle so I'm good to go. I have a gas stove so will be able to cook (figures) and a battery-powered radio for storm updates.

Come hell or high water, though, you can bet I will be on my flight to Clearwater on November 9th for Glenns's show on the 10th. Either that, or I'll be on I-95 (picking up VA & Dreamer on the way) and driving there. Hurricane Sandy won't stop me!!!

The governor is advising everyone to stay home tomorrow. They think the storm could stay over NJ for36 hours! Expecting lots of power outages. Last year we were without power for 5 days after Hurricane Irene. Store windows are boarded up around here. We have food, water, flashlights, batteries. We don't flood where we are, but we have family and friends who are heading for higher ground. Hope everyone is safe.

Good luck HH

Where we are , the wind and the trees and the power are the issue.
If we get a lot of rain, we need our sup pump, which needs power so it is a visious cycle.
Cars are full of gas, we have bottled water, batteries and gas for the generator incase we lose power.the generator will keep my sup pump going and the fridge so we should be ok .

The pile of books is high so...guess I will read..
Just want it to be over and work...who knows.Only one time have they closed the office for weather......but if its a state of emergency or the building is closed for liability issuse that home is where i want to be.

Finally back in VA. My family's relieved, the forecast changed there from snow to rain, so they feel better knowing they won't be getting 3-4 feet of snow. On the way back, pouring rain, there were amber-boards up all along the Turnpike wanting people to listen to a weather advisory. Basically saying no one should be going east, yet of course, traffic was heavy.

Here, all the schools and public transportation are closed tomorrow. There was NO bottled water at the grocery store. I got cans of soup, etc, things easily re-heatable on a camping stove. I'm wishing I'd brought wood in on Friday before it got wet.

Those who are my Facebook friends have seen the pictures of the Outer Banks that I posted, I have cousins that live on Hatteras Island. Major flooding there and a destroyed fishing pier.

Here, the problem will be power outages as well. Days of soaking rain followed by high winds means that even though my power company is very good about pruning trees, it's likely that trees will fall over with their entire root systems pulling out of the soaked ground. This is what happened back in 2005 with Hurricane Isabel.

Things are still pretty calm here. I expect that the worst of the storm will be tomorrow until Tuesday. There have been a lot of evacuations here of the beach areas, & lower Manhattan..These are the same areas that were evacuated for the last storm, Irene. I am not in an evacuation area. Our problem is the winds. When you are on a high floor of a high rise the winds are vicious. During one storm, the glass windows in our lobby were blown out. I have a large floor to ceiling window that covers one wall. That is what scares me. So far it is not that windy, & right now it is not even raining here, so the storm has not even hit us yet. I won't be working tomorrow, but now I'm wondering what the situation will be for Tues. It 's still a waiting game here. I'm not that worried about losing power as that usually doesn't happen here.

We still have power, though we've lost it several times and it's kicked back in. Rain is sideways and fierce. We are due for 75 - 85 mph sustained winds with gusts of up to 110 mph.

Several trees on the block are down and the fire department has been here turning off gas lines to the effected houses. Here is a video taken of that little beach community I posted about. This is on the Jamaica bay side at low tide. I can't imagine what it'll be like at 9 PM with a full moon, high tide and the full brunt of the Hurricane.

Watching the news.... Why do these reporters insist on standing in the water and high winds? I just saw Al Roker get thrashed by rain. It is ridiculous.

Praying for everyone!

Well luckily Hurricane Sandy has been mainly a rain event here with some wind gusts up to about 45 MPH. However, the sustained winds have only been about 20 MPH. There is some concern that we are going to have some flooding if the heavy rain continues. I lost my television cable connection for about an hour this evening, but it is back now and 'knock on wood' I still have power. Hope those to the north are doing okay.

I'm praying for all those in the path of the storm. I've been watching the coverage on TV & it's heartbreaking to see some of the damage that has been done.

Here in New Brunswick the storm hasn't hit yet. We aren't in it's direct path. High winds & heavy rains have been forecast for the next couple of days, but nothing like what is happening now to the east coast of the US.

Thinking of all of you this morning! I've been up since 2:30 because of the wind and the dogs pacing because of it. Ours are gusting around 45-55 miles an hour and it's freaky, I can't even imagine how it is out on the East Coast. They are warning everyone around here it's going to be high till late tonight and to stay away from the shore of Lake Michigan which is suppose to have waves from 20-30 feet high today. It's truly amazing that a storm hitting the East Coast is being felt all the way to the Northwest corner of Indiana.

I was watching the live coverage on Fox last night... So scary. Still thinking of everyone affected. Things like this make you realise how vulnerable we are in the face of nature. To see Manhattan completely dark and deserted was very eerie.

Lots of wind and rain in NH, but no major damage. Just some downed trees and power outages, and some flooding and overwash at the coast. We never lost our power, but it flickered a lot.

At the height, when the wind was howling and rain pounding the windows, I kept thinking that we're several hundred miles from the center and worrying about all those to the south of us. Hope everyone made it through okay.

Has anyone heard from HH or SG?

I've exchanged texts with HH. She and her DH are doin' OK, her main concern has been her mother's house on Breezy Point.

As for me, my power went out around 9:30 last night, went on/off throughout the night, then back on for good around 4:30am. The wind was howling and shaking the house and we were told the gusts went to 60 and 70 mph. It's just a little windy now and the rain has stopped. The roads around me are closed due to flooding.

Last night was a bit scary, but we did not lose power. I see some trees are down in front of my building. Several of my friends in NY & NJ have lost power. There is one friend I am particularly concerned about in Toms River NJ. I know that area was hit very hard & they lost power. I haven't heard from her, so I am a bit concerned. She lives with her mom who recently had surgery & is 89 years old.
I have no idea when the trains will be back, so I have no clue when I will be going back to work??? The subway system has severe damage. I may be off the whole week. I just wonder if I'm going to get paid for this or not. I don't think my office is even open.

I'm getting a bit of cabin fever, so I am going to go out in a little while to get some milk & stuff. I have already eaten all my "snacks" so I think I need some!!! LOL Right now it is pouring rain, so I will wait until it lets up a little.

Her mother is in Florida for the winter, so she's OK. HH doesn't know how her mother's house is, and she's dealing with her own power outage. She's OK, but very rattled by all of it. She doesn't have a way to access this board when her power's out.

Lost power here in VA about 24 hours ago and no idea when it's coming back. My office has power so we're here right now checking email and charging phones. Looking into a hotel tonight because my office is definitely open tomorrow :|

This is what happens when you mix a hurricane, higher elevations, and arctic air. This is also why I don't live in Somerset, PA anymore!

The resort is Seven Springs, and it's about six miles from my mother's house. It's about ten miles from my brother's and father's.

I have to be thankful that my area has not been hit too hard. We have been very lucky in comparison to what I'm seeing on tv. People leaving their houses in boats!! That's something I can hardly imagine... We didn't lose power. I went out this afternoon & my bank was closed, but I was able to get cash out of the machine. The supermarket that I usually go to was also closed, so I had to walk to another market, but the winds have calmed down so it wasn't too bad around here. One big tree came down but I didn't see much damage in my neighborhood. I can't complain.
I have still not been able to reach 3 friends who I'm pretty sure have no power so I'm still concerned for their safety. They could be without power for several days.
It looks like the subway system will be down for the rest of the week.
I guess I can catch up on some cleaning around my house!!

VA - If you hear from Joanie, let her know we are all thinking of her and have our fingers crossed about her mother's house. From what I'm hearing it's going to take up to 10 days to restore everyone's power. Let me tell ya that ain't no fun - been there and done that! Tell her to stay safe and to keep warm.

So glad to hear that all who have reported in are safe! I was wondering about Joanie as I heard that 90% of the power is out in Long Island! They showed fottage of the fires on the last news report I saw. My heart goes out to all who lost their homes as well as to all who sustained damage from the storm. Hope Joanie's mother's house escaped unscathed. Still praying for her.

That's a relief.

I find it hard imagining what weather like this is like. We have cyclones here but they are in tropical areas (far north of me). The only time a cyclone wiped out a city was when Cyclone Tracy destroyed Darwin in 1975.

glad HH and her DH ARE OK....HOUSES AND MATERIAL THINGS CAN BE REPLACED...PEOPLE CANT.
we were very lucky....our geatest fear is to lose power which means we lose our sum pump which means we flood. We were prepared ...we slept in shifts to be aware of power losage. We didn t lose power but it was in and out a few times. We have some tree limbs down but nothing big thank god.
JAHH and I are ok and if anyone talks to JOanie ...we"re praying:angel:VA I was happy to see your text...our phones and internet were out all day

Just texted with HH again, they still don't have power and have no idea when they'll get power. I heard that over 90% of Long Island is without power.

Today they went down to Breezy Point to see her mother's summer home. She said it looked like a war zone and she was completely shellshocked by what she saw. Not long after she said that, they showed video of Breezy Point on my local news and she wasn't kidding. It looks like a bomb went off. She said that the DEP said it would be months before power was restored there. Her mother's home is still there, but has massive flood damage.

She thanks everyone for their concern and thoughts and prayers. Physically she is fine, but emotionally she's a little battered.
