Understandable. I'm glad her mother's house is standing, at least.

Whew! Here's a video of Breezy Point. My heart just goes out to everyone who suffered damage or loss.

Yeah, I too am glad her Mothers house is still there. Hopefully the flood damage can be made good eventually too. I texted her today, but she may not have power in her phone. I just want her to know we haven't forgotten her and her family (not that we would).

I have seen some reports on the news here about the damage caused by the hurricane and my heart goes out to each and every person affected by it. I hope New York and the surrounding areas will show the same resiliance that the City has shown before in the face of adversity. I'm sure it will.

Things here in NY are still pretty bad...I have been blessed & lucky that I had no power loss or damages, but many of my friends are still without power. It's getting cold here & they have no heat, hot water or electric. I personally have not been through the destroyed areas, but I'm sure you have seen some of the damages on TV.
This is not normal weather here. This is the worst storm we've had in over 100 years. There have been hurricanes, but they are usually very rare and nothing like this one. They say the damages could amount to over 500 billion dollars.
Atlantic City, where we just had seen the Eagles in Sept. is totally destroyed. It's almost surreal.

Looks like the power has just come back in AC, but I doubt many will be visiting with the conditions as they are. There is still no gas, lines are hours long. Things are still very bad there. Frankly, I don't see how they are opening.

About the casinos in Atlantic City, most opened yesterday. Here's an article that talks about it. I was glad to read what part of their reasoning was, same thought I had when reading Zelda's post that the Revel was reopening. The people that work at these casinos probably suffered damage and probably need the money. The last thing they need is to be unemployed for any longer than necessary. Not sure how it'll work out with few employees able to get to work and few customers able to get there to spend $$, but I guess we'll find out.

I guess I'm thinking about how much fun I had at Revel....that is why people go there right?...I would feel guilty partyin' it up while so many nearby are really suffering...but if it helps the economy and the workers that's the good part...I just wonder how many people will actually go...would you go there right now?...maybe the problem gamblers will!...good luck to them all...AC will always be a special place to me now!

Just talked to HH, they still don't have power. She said there's still trees down with power lines under them all over the place. In some places, the trees have been cleaned up, but the lines and poles are still down. I'm wondering if they're having a problem getting new poles into the area? Anyway, it's not looking like she'll be getting power any time soon, and apparently a Nor'easter is due to come through on Wednesday.

Does she have any family she can go stay with somewhere?...she still is planning to go to Fla isn't she?...or is that a stupid question?

Topkat
11-03-2012, 03:39 PM
I feel so bad for HH. I have several friends on LI that are still without power. They are working on it, but there is so much to do & those trees have to be moved. It could be another week or more in some areas. I hope she can go to a friend or relative for some relief. It's getting very cold here.

As for AC. I can see the reasoning for opening the casinos, to recover the revenue lost, but I doubt many people will be coming to the casinos, except for the locals & even still many of them are still without power, so they have lots of work to do. They made AC a priority to get the power on ASAP, but the residents nearby are still suffering. Once again money is the issue. Get the casinos up & running, but the people living there suffer.

Her family is pretty much in the same boat as she's in. She has a friend that has power, and she's been going there off and on, but since she has her sister's dogs, she can't stay there. As for Florida, at this point in time she's thinking she can't go.

I was able to exchange emails with HH today. They are all hanging in there despite some pretty horrid conditions, including the cold weather. She's a tough cookie and is focusing on all the things she has to be thankful for. As VA said, it's not looking good for her on making Glenn's show at this point, but she is trying to keep her sense of humor and gave me some very specific instructions for Glenn if she doesn't make it.

Everyone please continue to keep her and all of the others affected by this disaster in your thoughts.

first , I WILL Comment that Ac has always been special for me..
It goes back to when I was a kid. It is a place JAhh and I have gone many times to see many great mucisal shows. We spent our 25th wedding anniversary there as well as our 30 (seeing Joe Walsh). We have always gone there cause it always a fun place when we were kids and when its our anniversary it"s a hard time to get away from work so we have always gone close just to have a nice dinner and a romantic walk on the boards by the sea.
I understand that they want to open cuase the casinos arent generous to their people..meaning they could pay them if they wanted to for not working but they choose not to so to them they think they should open so that these people can go to work. If you read the article...it was locals coming back ...maybe locals who didnt have heat or electricity and for them it was a nice place to go instead of some of the butt pople I saw on the news who were renting hotel rooms without heat or electricity to people for 60.00 or better yet their normal room rate of 75.oo but they charged a poor lady 115.00 plus tax a nite.Or the gas station owners in toms river who are charging 10.oo a gallon for gas cause they had it and electricity where others who had the gas but no way to despense it cause they had no power.
this is just not right.

Last but not least..HH you and your family are in my prayers and thoughts and in my heart.
God keep you and bless you durning this difficult time..Eventuly this too shall pass even though it just doesnt seem possible at this time that it ever will.
Love to you Joanie ..keep up your spirits.

We just got our power back. We are fine. No damage. But so many in our area have lost everything. The town I grew up in, the town my husband grew up in, and so many others are just devastated. So many friends and family are dealing with so much right now. Please pray for them. Miraculously, I haven't heard of any deaths in our immediate area. Homes can be replaced but people can't. SG, so glad to know you're OK and that things are going as well as can be expected.

At church tonight, we were urged to give towards the relief effort. Half will go to the NJ/NY area and half towards West Virginia, Virginia, and Ohio, where apparently people are losing their houses due to four feet of wet snow caving the roofs in. All that kind of gets lost in the news cycles.

Sally, glad to hear you are ok, and you have no damages & your power is back on.
Also glad that HH is going to stay with someone who has power tonight. It must be very trying to be without electricity for such a long time.
Still praying for everyone who have lost their homes. It's just terrible. Where are all these people going to live when they are rebuilding? They are homeless, it's really so sad to see this happening.

As for AC, yes I think the hotels are open so THEY can make up for the lost money. They lose tons of money when people aren't gambling (losing) money there! The workers do need the money as well, but these workers don't make much, They rely on tips & if the hotels aren't busy they make very little.
People will start to come back to AC soon, maybe not for a week or so, but they will come back.

I really cannot complain because I have heat, hot water & power. My only problem is that my train to work isn't running which makes my commute longer. I did not work, Mon - Thurs, but I did work on Fri. but my boss let me leave early.

Tues, I am supposed to work at the election....I am wondering how this election is going to go off with so many people without power. The voting is electronic, so I'm wondering what is going to happen with this. I mean it's a presidential election, they can't just postpone it. I'm waiting to see what the mayor is going to say about it. So far, it has not even been mentioned??? NY & NJ will not have full power by Tues. that is pretty much a fact at this point.
We also have a rainstorm heading our way for Wed. What a nightmare this is for some people. My heart really goes out to them.

TT, please keep us posted on Lucas's condition! Hope he is doing better each day!

Thanks everyone. Feeling a little better today. Having power helps a lot. Hope HH gets hers back soon. Got to see some family today. My nephew won't be allowed back in his town for a few weeks. It lies between the ocean and a river. He knows there will be nothing left. But he is in good spirits. As most people I have spoken to are. We babysat for our nephews so that our brother in law and his wife could empty their flooded house. Sad but strong. That's what real Jersey Shore people are. It will take a while but it will be rebuilt. Travel is still difficult. Because of power, traffic lights are still out. Lots of detours. Lines at the gas stations looked a little shorter today. We still don't have work tomorrow. They are talking about a Nor'easter coming on Wednesday. I hope they're wrong. Stay safe everyone.

I'm back!!! Did ya miss me???

Thanks for all your prayers and concern. We are all hanging in there, but needless to say it's been a b#tch of a week. We finally got power back this morning and I'm very thankful because the temps were in the 30's last night. There are still so many people without heat or power. It's unlike anything I've ever experienced. Gas lines go for blocks and blocks. Grocery stores have empty shelves. I'm very fortunate to still have a roof over my head.

We are all fine physically. Emotionally is another story. We have been working on temporary housing for friends and relatives from Breezy Point. It's uninhabitable for now and probably for a minimum of six months. 2800 families have been displaced and that's just in this one small community. The scope of devastation and destruction is monumental. We were able to get there on Wednesday and what normally would have been a 5-minute walk to my mother's house was an hour-long ordeal of hiking over debris and flood water. My sister's house is relatively intact. Her basement and heating systems are shot but that is fixable. Same with my 93-year-old aunt. My cousin's house which was on the bayfront is probably a total loss. We will have to wait to see if my mother's house is structurally sound but it may have been shifted off it's foundation from the storm surge. If so we will have to tear it down and rebuild from the gound up. The first floor is shot. The water line is about 5 feet off the floor. Heating system is toast, but again -- structures can be replaced. The fire did not have any impact on her house so that's something but the whole community looks like a bomb went off. It's surreal. 110 houses were burned down while every single structure on the peninsula was damaged in some way. I've spent every summer in Breezy Point and lived there for the first five years after I got married. It will never be the same.
We are all still a little shell-shocked but grateful there was no loss of life. I'll post some pics when I have more time. My cousin Maggie's house was literally six feet from the fire line. My nephew had a very close call. He had to fight waist-deep storm surge waters and found shelter in the 2nd floor of the community's administrative building and was evacuated on a fire truck in the early AM hours. We found his car about half a mile from where he parked it. Of all of the news stories I've seen, this report comes close to nailing the madness.

Temps are in the 30's and so we may get some snow tto with this Nor'Easter. Hopefully we won't lose it for another 6 days. Over 250,000 people still have no power or heat since 10/29/12. :brickwall: And that's just on Long Island! Probably over a million people total.

We were lucky with the weather this time. We only got about 2 inches of snow. We didn't lose power, but some areas of town did. Some still don't have power from last week. More trees came down because of the snow and wind.

Actually, not really rare! We had a little rumble off the one from last year...there is some activity from a fault that was discovered in 1978...FYI my friend was at the football game in Knoxville & felt the rumble during the pre-game prayer (she thought it was people running along the balcony above her seats!!)

Just getting a good start on our next winter storm. It's snowing like crazy! The last 3 inches hasn't even gotten melted off. Usually our snows come and go rather quickly, but it has stayed very cold this time and not melted.

Our gravel road has been like a washboard to drive on because it drifted and froze and the snow plow didn't take it all off. Roughest I've ever seen it in the 15 years I've lived there!

Once I got out, picked up some lunch, went to the chiro, made it home, I crashed (fighting off allergies again!)...

Woke up at around 5PM (by my mom) to look out the window at all the wet SNOW that finally started around 3...and it had taken her an hour to get from work to home, ack!!

Our system has 13 days built in, so we don't have to make up any time unless we go over. Two years ago (during our "snowmageddon") we did go over, so the kids lost 2 days that we would have had to come in for anyway as Inservice...plus we went on one Saturday (interesting day..)

As opposed to the city system here, which refuses to build in more than 2-3 days and assumes their roads are always crystal clear...they are out today, but you bet they will lose having President's Day, just like...two years ago, during our "snowmageddon"

No snow here, but brutally cold. 8 this morning with wind chills below zero. I'm thinking my hubby needs to be checked out. He actually went to work this morning-building a house a couple miles away! man! (He didn't stay long!)

They said this morning that we are still desperately dry and need 10 inches of rain to just catch up to normal. Hope we don't get that in snow! It would take over 10 feet!

They said we are very dry here as well, and that there were several brush fires today because of it. Seems like after a week of NO SUN we could handle some dry air, but I guess not.

All week it was freezing, like 12-15 degrees. I have really had it with this cold.:-x
Last night it was snowing when I left work. Had a hard time getting home because my train wasn't running, so I had to walk a few more blocks to get another train, so I got home at 7:30pm, Cold, wet & pretty exhausted!
Today the sun is out & it's not snowing, but still will be pretty cold. I think I may just stay in all day.

Wow ladies - I have to say it's times like this when I'm glad I don't live farther north. It's been pretty chilly here in the Mid-Atlantic this week as well. We've had 3 snowstorms in about 10 days, but we only got about 1 1/2 - 2 inches in each of them. I can deal with that and I've discovered that my pup, Smuggler, loves the snow. He doesn't like the cold weather, but he loves the snow - go figure!

For the love of God----will it ever stop?!?!?!?

No school again today. It's been snowing nonstop for days now and expecting another 5-10 inches today (can't ever tell around here-just depends on how the wind blows off the lake). You could still see the path hubby blowed for our dog Pickles (he's low profile). This morning, it's gone.

Here's a picture from yesterday morning out my back dining room window (I was NOT going outside!). It snowed all day yesterday, quit for a few hours over night and started again this morning around 5 and hasn't stopped so add about another 10 inches or so. Ugh!! And this is still a mild winter for us here. We average over 120 inches a year here.

Come on down!! Your room is always ready!

We got very little rain, which suits me because we are supposed to have high winds this evening and overnight and wet ground allows the trees to uproot and fall on power lines. I just read where there are 50,000 without power in Maryland due to wind. We are to get more rain tonight, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

It's about 19 degrees today so whatever was not plowed or shovelled yesterday is an immovable iceberg today. We got about 18" which was manageable.
