Eagles Song Survivor: Former Eagles Songs

Time for the Former Eagles Song Survivor, where we vote off the each former Eagles' songs until we get to the last one standing!

I'm going to list all of the former Eagles songs in the competition here. Vote for the song that you feel should be eliminated from the list. The song that gets the most votes will be taken off of the list (or, in the language of Survivor, "voted off of the island.") Each round, one more song will get axed, until there's only one left. Remember: you're voting for the one you think should GO, not the one you think should stay.

Note: Do not criticize how/why other people vote. Their reasons are their own and they are free to vote however they like. Also, never attack a fellow poster. You can disagree without making it personal. Sometimes these games can get heated, but remember... it's still just a game.

Each round will last 48 hours after posting to give people a chance to vote who don't post every day. That means that the first round will end at 8:00 Eastern time the day after tomorrow. If you miss a round, don't think you can't play. It's all good!

Since there may be discussion posts, be sure to make it clear when you are casting your vote. Once the board clock strikes 8:00 pm Eastern on the second day, no more votes will be counted for that round - even if it's only seconds after. Your votes also cannot be changed once you have voted, even if you change your mind or make a mistake. Once it's on the record, that's it - so be careful!

If you get confused about what round we are in, look at this post. I'll always update it to reflect the current round. Also feel free to post any questions if you don't understand what's going on.

If there is a tiebreaker, then ALL votes from ALL previous rounds are tallied and whoever has the most prior votes is eliminated. That’s the way it’s done on the real show, that’s the way it’s done here. If there is a complete tie with prior votes (Murphy’s Law), then I'll have a sudden-death trivia question ready. The tie-breaker question will be asked one hour after results are in, if there is need for it. The first person who answers it correctly gets to break the tie. The odds of that happening are slim, but you never know, and it's good to be prepared. The exception is the last round. If the tiebreaker does not resolve the last round, then the tie will be allowed to stand.

In order to avoid voter fraud and trolling, we require that you must be "a member in good standing" as defined by the Terms of Service for at least two weeks before the start of the game in order to cast a vote.

I would like to make a case to save Visions for a few more rounds. I am one that rather likes the song, especially the music and melody. I don’t think it is up there with the band’s best work by any means, but I do think it is stronger than several other songs in this game. IMO, one of the weakest songs in the band’s catalog is Earlybird. The chirping just grates on me. So ...

As Glenn once said, for all of his talents as a guitar player, Felder isn't a singer. Nor a good lyricist IMO (solo music). VOL is one of my favorites, so I'm glad GF and DH stuck to their guns and had Henley sing that one.

Some of the other songs here aren't much better, admittedly, but I cannot stomach Don Felder trying to sing... :lol:

Also, my favourite Bernie song is Bitter Creek and I hope it survives for a long while.

I’m with KingWalsh. While “Earlybird” could have a lot less chirping, I do like the rest of the song. It has a nice laid-back breezy feeling, plus the lyrics are interesting and have a heedful quality.

I love Take the Devil - the lyrics, the eerie desert vibe, Randy’s vocal performance. I agree with UtW about Witchy Woman. There is a thematic connection between the two songs.

“Tryin” works much better live than in the studio, imo. The bootlegs I’ve heard show the band really jamming out while performing this song and sounding like a bona fide rock band. For that reason alone I believe it deserves to stay a little longer in the game.

Just to let everyone know, I am going out to dinner tonight so the results for this round will probably be a little late. I'll post them as soon as I get home.

So - I have to vote earlier than I'd like. I think both IWYP and JOTS are likeable songs, but they are both out of place on the OOTN album and are indicative that Bernie was not on board with the direction the band was taking at the time, IMO. Of the two, I prefer IWYP. JOTS is catchy but, to me, it would have been better if it had been a couple of minutes shorter. It's too repetitive to go on as long as it does. If the round wasn't so close, I was going to vote for Is It True, but ...

One thing that may help folks remember is that each round ends on the odd numbered days. Last month the rounds were ending on even numbered days, but that changed when the months changed.

As far as Certain Kind of Fool and Is It True - I am just the opposite. CKOF is one of my favorite of Randy's Eagles songs. I think it fits well into the concept of the Desperado album and has cool lyrics and music. As I said before, Is It True doesn't really grab me at all. I'll withhold my vote for now, but will definitely vote for Is It True if I can help eliminate it.

Wow - This is getting hard now. I'm not sure what to vote for this round. I definitely don't want to see Twenty-One go down yet - it's my second favorite of Bernie's Eagles songs. I'm going to have to wait to see how this round plays out before I decide what to do. I would try to form a coalition, but , TBH, I don't really know which song to choose so I guess I'll just wait to see how it goes. Hopefully, others are waiting like I am to see if members rally around a particular song.

Twenty-One was my next pick after CKOF. But with so few votes in total it will likely be saved. Not sure if I should vote for Most of Us Are Sad, the song that convinced Glyn Johns to produce the band or Too Many Hands, the only rock song left and one with a commentary on the environment. While I like Twenty-One, it just seems like a less relevant song in the band’s catalog.

However, I don't really like the lead vocals - they are a little too strained and that makes them a bit whiny.My favourite of Randy's vocals isTryin' because he gets to sing most of it in a normal range but also has a part where he can show off what a wide, continuous range he has.

Usually the country/folk/roots people don't like the Eagles because either they were too perfected/rehearsed/"boring" OR because they went into straightahead rock in the late 70s and shed more and more of the country/country-rock western sound. They were too polished for some and boring. They didn't like the fact that they played it like the record every time. Personally ALL of those reasons is exactly why I love them.

I adore TALA- the vocals, the guitars, the solo, just everything about it. But TITTL is truly a standout track in the Eagles catalog, with inspirational lyrics that are well-known and often quoted. Keith Urban can break out into the song in concert, and everyone in the audience will sing along. The title itself has pretty much become a part of contemporary lexicon, just like “Life in the Fast Lane.” How many song titles out there have led to movies adopting the same?

And the vocals- wow. This is not an easy song to sing, even without the high notes at the end, but Randy pulls it off.

Even though I love both songs, I choose the one that has become a classic.

I think that had Randy not left the band, TALA would have become a staple of 1970's radio play today.

I remember hearing TITTL the first time in Junior High in the lunch room, thinking it sounded "Eagleish" but I did not recognize the singer. It became one of my instant 1970's favorites. I think it ranks as legendary along with OOTN and Hotel California.

Hi Derk! I went to Msg 2/15. Vince did a fine job on TALA. The crowd was very energetic throughout and sang along for every song. It was great.The song got heavy praise in my opinion.

I feel that Glenn's guitar solo on TALA is up there with the best he's ever done. Glenn was a very underrated guitar player, and I wish he'd get more props for it and get proper credit on things he played vs Felder.

The two note slides he does in this are a great display of his knowledge of soul guitar. Those fills popularized by the likes of Bobby Womack, Cornell Dupree, Reggie Young, Curtis Mayfield, Steve Cropper, etc went on to inspire Hendrix, and certainly Glenn being from Detroit, Michigan certainly knew a thing or 10 about RNB and soul music. You had Stax, American Sound, Muscle Shoals, and of course - Motown.

I vote for "Take It To The Limit" for the win.

This song was a stunner performed live. In concert, all Eagles hits were cheered for when the first recognizable chords were played and again when the song ended. Of course we all stood, danced and clapped along to TIE and other favorites, but the response to TITTL was other worldly. The applause built during the song and thundered for a long time afterwards. I think that we were not only applauding a hit song, but Randy's amazing performance. TITTL was never my favorite Eagles song, but it remains the best live performance I've ever seen.

My My, you are sooo lucky you got to see that performance. :jealous: There’s a YT clip of Melissa Etheridge covering the song and before she starts she talks about watching the band perform TITTL back in the day. She said the same thing about the crowd reaction.

Yeah LGG - fortunately there was no impact on the final outcome of the round. And hope you feel better soon - I had bronchitis and it took me almost 2 months to completely get rid of it! :yuck:
