I couldn't get to sleep, so I decided to cruise some of the Fleetwood Mac boards. There I discovered the biggest fiasco to hit the fan community since the Fleetwood Mac fan club ripped off thousands of people (including me - still waiting for that free 2003 calendar! lol)
I know we joke about hiring Glenn Frey for a "private party." Well, some 20 year old kid who runs a Fleetwood Mac message board (http://www.sevenwondersonline.net/index.php/topic,4317.0.html) thought he could do it for Stevie Nicks, and actually tried. The only problem is, you have to have $100,000 UP FRONT to book these guys. And that's just the minimum deposit, folks. So this industrious boy asks 300 people from his board to pony up $350 each, but doesn't tell them that the money has to be up front, instead leading them to believe that they are buying a seat at the already planned party - first come, first serve, so better hurry up and hand over the money before they're all sold out! (Although they did include the caveat that the contract had not been finalized). And some people actually contributed. Stevie Nicks hardcores... a very intense fandom. Certainly I've as of yet seen nothing in the Eagles fan community to rival Stevie hardcores when it comes to frenzied fervor. I know because I consider myself one, and I've seen it firsthand!
Finally the NicksFix, Stevie's official site, felt the need to make an announcement that Stevie would not be playing any private party on the date and location specified. AND STILL PEOPLE ARE GIVING THIS BOY MONEY, completely in denial. And STILL he is ACCEPTING it under what now are clearly false pretenses. Now some people are starting to get pissed with STEVIE for not caring about her fans because she "refuses" to do a show for them. As Glenn would say, oh my my!
I know this boy, and he is not a scam artist. However, he is self-important, rash, and willing to fudge the truth to save face (I once traded with him - took six months with a bevy of questionable excuses before he finally sent me the WRONG DISCS. Needless to say I no longer deal with him). My guess is at this point, he would rather continue to take people's money than admit it fell through, I suppose stalling until he can figure out a way to spin this colossal blunder. Obviously, he can't stall forever. I do believe he will refund these people. I just hope he rips the band-aid off sooner rather than later.
The lesson: If you want Stevie Nicks or our guys to play at your party, you'd better already be rich, 'cause passing around the hat to the hardcores isn't gonna cut it - unless, of course, they're all rich too! lol
Too bad, eh? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT=";)">
