View Full Version : Hiring Glenn - NOT! A cautionary tale! lol

I couldn't get to sleep, so I decided to cruise some of the Fleetwood Mac boards. There I discovered the biggest fiasco to hit the fan community since the Fleetwood Mac fan club ripped off thousands of people (including me - still waiting for that free 2003 calendar! lol)

I know we joke about hiring Glenn Frey for a "private party." Well, some 20 year old kid who runs a Fleetwood Mac message board (http://www.sevenwondersonline.net/index.php/topic,4317.0.html) thought he could do it for Stevie Nicks, and actually tried. The only problem is, you have to have $100,000 UP FRONT to book these guys. And that's just the minimum deposit, folks. So this industrious boy asks 300 people from his board to pony up $350 each, but doesn't tell them that the money has to be up front, instead leading them to believe that they are buying a seat at the already planned party - first come, first serve, so better hurry up and hand over the money before they're all sold out! (Although they did include the caveat that the contract had not been finalized). And some people actually contributed. Stevie Nicks hardcores... a very intense fandom. Certainly I've as of yet seen nothing in the Eagles fan community to rival Stevie hardcores when it comes to frenzied fervor. I know because I consider myself one, and I've seen it firsthand!

Finally the NicksFix, Stevie's official site, felt the need to make an announcement that Stevie would not be playing any private party on the date and location specified. AND STILL PEOPLE ARE GIVING THIS BOY MONEY, completely in denial. And STILL he is ACCEPTING it under what now are clearly false pretenses. Now some people are starting to get pissed with STEVIE for not caring about her fans because she "refuses" to do a show for them. As Glenn would say, oh my my!

I know this boy, and he is not a scam artist. However, he is self-important, rash, and willing to fudge the truth to save face (I once traded with him - took six months with a bevy of questionable excuses before he finally sent me the WRONG DISCS. Needless to say I no longer deal with him). My guess is at this point, he would rather continue to take people's money than admit it fell through, I suppose stalling until he can figure out a way to spin this colossal blunder. Obviously, he can't stall forever. I do believe he will refund these people. I just hope he rips the band-aid off sooner rather than later.

The lesson: If you want Stevie Nicks or our guys to play at your party, you'd better already be rich, 'cause passing around the hat to the hardcores isn't gonna cut it - unless, of course, they're all rich too! lol

Too bad, eh? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Man - does this mean you all want me to return your money for the 'excellent adventure' I promised you with Glenn? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/tongue.gif ALT=":p">

But seriously, this is sad that this guy would have been either so dishonest or so dillusional to think he could pull this off.

I think it's the latter. What worries me is he's pretending that it's still on even after the official statement, claiming that the official statement is false information given out for "security reasons." Um. Yeah.

Oh dear, buyer beware. Tough on the fans and on Stevie's reputation. I sincerely hope he does refund everyone, but have my doubts.

Update! He's cancelled the party, blaming it on the fact that not enough people paid up, and also that people "weren't discreet" about it, and that's why Stevie's people refused to do it. Right.

But he HAS to refund the money, unless he wants to go into hiding!

Interesting story, Nancy. I hope the boy returns everyones' money.

Tell me more about the Fleetwood Mac Fan Club rip-off---what happened there?

Dana, the boy did refund everyone. He blamed the whole thing on "negative" people who tattle-taled to Stevie's management that "Seven Wonders Productions" was really this kid trying to get money from fans to hire her! But hey, if you post something on an open board, you can't really expect it to be a secret.

The fan club.... ayiyiyiyi. I'll save that for when I have more time to type it up. "Disaster" is putting it lightly.

I realized as I was reviewing old threads that I never answered your question about the fan club, Dana. Well, here's the Cliff Notes version:

For the Mac's Say You Will tour, Mick Fleetwood hired an incompetent and DISHONEST (IMHO) guy named Jonathan Todd to open up and run an official site and launch a Fan Club for Fleetwood Mac. You had to pony up at least $50 (there were different membership levels). You were promised a variety of things with membership - a calendar, a couple other goodies - I cant remember what they were because I never got them. Indeed, whether you received these things was almost random. The lucky ones got their 2004 calendars that they were promised upon joining in 2003 in March or April of the year 2004. Others received a letter at that time that the calendars were on backorder and they would get them in May or June. Others, like me, NEVER received one.

You were also promised good seats in a special fan club presale. This was why most people signed up - they certainly didn't sign up for the calendar, lol. VERY few people got what anyone would consider good seats. While a couple lucky people got second row, I remember, and a sprinkling of other good seats in the sixth row, the tenth row - that kind of thing, most were far worse. My fan club seat, which was typical of most, put me in Row X of the floor. It was the worst seat I ever had at a Fleetwood Mac concert, barring the one I got for free from Lindsey Buckingham's niece (she told me to pick any venue for a comp seat and I happened to choose the venue that didn't have the comp seats in a decent place - some of you may know it - Chastain in Atlanta. And yes I did travel to Atlanta to see the Mac.. and Raleigh... and Green Bay... a total of 16 shows. I was an uber hardcore with a car, summer vacation, and some friends who were willing to let us stay for free all over! Think the Glenn Frey groupie tour x10 and without hotel bills <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT=":o"> ) And they also had the nerve to charge a $10 "service charge" for each ticket bought through the fanclub presale and $12 "shipping and handling"!

Even the "first news" privileges we were supposed to receive by e-mail were discontinued in April of 2004 (the tour didn't end until September) and we were told we would have to visit Mick's site for this news - just like everybody else. Come on, how difficult is it to send out mass e-mails?!!

And there you have it. I spent approximately $70 bucks (including ticket fees on top of the regular ticket price of $125) for NOTHING. Angry fans. Ill will against the band for letting it continue (although Stevie and Lindsey tried to distance themselves from it when complaints were sent to their management). As I said before, WHAT A DISASTER.

Ouch, that really was a rip-off, wasn't it? It's not as if these bands need the extra income (not that the band members were aware of what was going on, probably). That's certainly no way to treat the most devoted fans.

Thanks for the explanation, Nancy. No wonder you were mad at that whole situation.

What is it about these bands--the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, & Don Henley come immediately to mind--that they can't seem to find the time or the right people to run a website or fan club properly? It certainly isn't from lack of funds. They can all afford to hire the best webmasters that are available.

I agree, Dana. I have no idea. In the case of Mick, this was a guy he worked with on some digital drumming project and he thought it would be a super idea if he ran the website and fan club too (um, OK). As far as websites go, maybe these older bands don't yet comprehend the value of a good website as a tool and therefore don't invest much into it. Glenn seems to have no interest in making an official website whatsoever! Maybe his kids need to clue him in on why it would be a good idea, lol.

I look at eaglesband.com and I see a merchandising store. It's an insult to the intelligence. There is nothing positive that can be said about it.

Well, I must say I thought the design of it was clever, with the record grooves as links.
