My Google Alert today directed me to this post on Linda Ronstadt, which began with the title "What Ever Happened to Linda Ronstadt?" (This is a long post--bear with me here.) It is a good synopsis of Linda's career, and after it, I have added why it is relevant to me.
---------------------------------------------
"In the 1970s, like it or not, it seemed that Ronstadt was everywhere. And now, at the age of 61, she seems to have vanished. What gives?

Born in Tucson in 1946, Linda Ronstadt got her first taste of fame as the lead singer of The Stone Poneys in the mid-sixties. Their biggest hit single was "A Different Drum," written- oddly enough- by Michael Nesmith, who would go on to become one of The Monkees.

The Stone Poneys broke up and Ronstadt embarked on a solo career. She hit the folk/rock circuit, touring with a backup band that included two then unknown musicians named Glenn Frey and Don Henley. They, of course, would later go on to form The Eagles.
In the 1970s, Ronstadt became the first lady of rock, thanks to her smoldering good looks, tough attitude, and a string of hits that included "It's So Easy," "You're No Good," and "Blue Bayou."

When the 1980s rolled in, like many of her contemporaries, Ronstadt started to dabble in various other genres of music. It got to the point where things got rather bizarre. First she cut a new wave rock album in 1980, which featured her covers of works by artist like Elvis Costello. Then she was chosen to star in a Broadway revival of "Pirates of Penzance," opposite Kevin Kline. In 1983 she tackled The Great American Songbook (some two decades before Rod Stewart). Always an opera buff, Ronstadt decided to try her hand at this challenging genre. In 1984, she made her operatic debut as Mimi in Puccini's "La Boheme."
Perhaps the most bizarre move, however, came in 1989, when Ronstadt decided to get in touch with her Mexican roots. She donned traditional Mexican attire, got herself some excellent Latin musicians, and released an album of Mariachi-flavored classics. Titled "Canciones de Mi Padre," the album was actually a hit and a surprise, as many people didn't know that Linda Ronstadt was actually of Mexican descent (though I suppose the dark hair and dark eyes should've given this away). Through all this, we can't forget her 1986 duet with James Ingram, "Somewhere Out There," from the soundtrack to "An American Tale."

Finally, in the 1990s, Ronstadt returned to her rock n roll roots with a series of albums that met with mixed success. On December 31st, 1999, she was part of a triple bill that came to be known as "The Millennium Concert" at L.A.'s Staples Center. Headlined by her old backup band, The Eagles, the show also featured Jackson Brown.

For a few years, she was quiet, but then all hell broke loose in 2004. Ronstadt was booked to do a series of shows at The Aladdin in Las Vegas. During one of her performances, she dedicated her cover of The Eagles classic, "Desperado," to filmmaker, Michael Moore. Defending Moore's film "Fahrenheit 9/11" and lashing out at President Bush, Ronstadt angered most of the audience. Many started booing, some got up and left, and some even threw drinks and tore down her posters in the lobby. The performance was stopped, and Ronstadt was escorted out of The Aladdin as she refused to leave on her own accord. While she gained support from some of her friends in the music industry like The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, and Elton John, her comments praising Moore and, later, attacking President Bush, found her to be the target of many right wing analysts and commentators.

Did this incident effect Ronstadt's career and popularity? Perhaps. The fact that she is now almost 62, and a good 75 pounds overweight doesn't help either. Though she still tours now and then, and even released an album in 2006, she has been rather quiet and out of the public eye. "
-----------------------------------------

Now, my two cents:
The first time I saw Don solo was in Atlanta in the summer of 2004. I didn't know one thing about him except that I liked his songs. He was chatty and charming and the show was fantastic. The audience was constantly yelling stuff out and interrupting him, which I thought was kind of rude, but he was patient and good natured. He joked, "I guess some of you folks think this is an interactive concert?" Anyway, he started talking negatively about Bush before he sang Randy Newman's biting & hilarious "Political Science," a song about dropping bombs on the rest of the world and making them all American. Don said he envisioned this song as a duet with Bush and Cheney. The boos started. He said something like, "We deal with the real issues here - if you want something else, go see Britney." Anyway, after several more boos he said, "I forgot I am in the Deep South--I had better shut up & sing before the same thing happens to me that just happened to Linda Ronstadt."

That night was a revelation for me in more ways than one. I not only got a crash-course in Don's politics and his activism----
but I also fell for him, HARD.

I would LOVE to see Don sing the brilliant Political Science. I know how much he loves Randy Newman (it's a shame the collaboration on the overblown Faust album didn't really work). If there is one major artist I have yet to see live that I hope I do someday, it's Randy. But that is another topic.

I always admired the twists and turns in Linda Ronstadt's career. (So does Glenn; see the Bob Costas interview). The albums I have are Heart Like A Wheel (the best), Simple Dreams and Living In The USA. I did have the 'standard' albums What's New and Lush Life on vinyl but I never bought them on CD. She has an outstanding voice, but the criticism that is usually made of her is that she just 'reads' a song, doesn't interpret it. I have to say that I find her version of Desperado a very pale imitation.

To me she was at her best not when she did songs like Living In The USA, Heat Wave, Love Me Tender, etc, but when she did Warren Zevon's quirkier material, Poor Poor Pitiful Me, Carmelita and Mohammed's Radio. She made a game try at the Stones' Tumbling Dice.

I just realised this is an opportunity to do a top 10!

1. Long Long Time (definitive)
2. White Rhythm & Blues (gorgeous Souther song)
3. Mohammed's Radio
4. You're No Good
5. You Can Close Your Eyes (features Frey/Henley/Schmit, before Schmit was an Eagle)
6. Simple Man, Simple Dream
7. Silver Threads & Golden Needles
8. Alison (fantastic version of Elvis Costello standard)
9. Blue Bayou
10. Dark End Of The Street

Honourable mention: great version of Little Feat's Willin'.

FP, I love your top ten! I love Blue Bayou and Poor Poor Pitiful Me too.
Could you do me a favor and tell me which album each song comes from? I don't have very many Ronstadt albums, and I was thinking about purchasing several of her CDs.

My pleasure, DF.

White Rhythm & Blues, Alison & Mohammed's Radio are from Living In The USA.

You're No Good, You Can Close Your Eyes & Dark End Of The Street are from Heart Like A Wheel.

Simple Man, Simple Dream & Blue Bayou are from Simple Dreams.

Long Long Time & Silver Threads & Golden Needles are from Greatest Hits Vol. 1

The honourable mention, Willin', is from Heart Like A Wheel.

BTW, Don was so cute singing Political Science. He kicked his legs up in the end of the song like a chorus line--it was hilarious! :D

Thanks for that article, DF. Hubby and I both loved Linda back in the 70's. We still have 7 of her albums, but never replaced them with cds.

We have

Simple Dreams(77) and Living in the USA(seventy-eight) I get the cool smiley if I type those numbers!

and also

Linda Ronstadt (does anyone know when this was made? I can't find a date on it at all. I'm assuming 74 since there is a gap year if not. Although I would think it would be her first album before Don't Cry Now.)

Don't Cry Now(73)
Prisoner in Disguise(75)
Hasten Down the Wind((76)
Mad Love(79)

I thought we had Heart Like a Wheel, but it wasn't with these.

There are some great songs on all of them. :D

I for one think it's rude to boo, no matter if you agree with the person or not. I have sat through many a disagreeable diatribe silently, patiently waiting for it to end so that the show could resume and I could start enjoying myself again. I understand that the person is just expressing their sincerely-believed opinion.

That said, when you give an opinion, you have to be prepared for the fact that not everyone in the audience is going to treat it as divinely inspired words of wisdom that should be swallowed without objection. Don's insulting response to an audience that didn't applaud his opinions made me cringe. I try not to judge him too harshly for that though, since it was probably largely a defensive response to the feeling of rejection that comes from one's words getting booed. When one's feelings are hurt, one has a tendency to strike back.

However, you can't encourage everyone who agrees with you to cheer, then get pissed off when those who don't boo. Both camps have every right to vocalize their opinions, even if I personally think it's impolite.

Now, going beyond boos to throwing drinks and worse, as happened in Ronstadt's case, is completely unacceptable. It was Vegas, so I imagine Ronstadt was faced with a crowd of surly drunks in order for it to get that out of hand. I hope they were ashamed once they sobered up.

On a more positive note, I love Linda Ronstadt's voice. I got her recent collection The Capitol Years and loved it. Her vocals on "Rock Me on the Water" are especially moving.

Regarding the article - why must they ALWAYS comment upon her weight nowadays?!! That doesn't affect her voice. It's insulting to women everywhere that appearance is so harped upon, but it's par for the course. :(

DF, I know how much the Atlanta show meant to you. Thanks for sharing a few thoughts about it.

Regarding the comment on weight - that is so true. Nobody ever talks about David Crosby or Stephen Stills' weight. :?

I'm not sure how I feel about Don and his response to that audience. If he was annoyed by it he had the right to make a comment. Perhaps the 'we deal with real issues' line is a bit patronising.

A couple more Linda Ronstadt CD's.

Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris 'Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions' (1999) - Linda and Emmylou are great together.

Linda Ronstadt 'Songs of My Father' - I LOVE this one. Many of the songs are in Spanish (which I don't speak) but the whole vibe of the CD is upbeat and fun. Although I know I have this CD I cannot find it anywhere today :? I'm guessing hubby has lent it to someone  so cannot tell you when it came out but it was quite a while ago.

I also think it is rude to boo at concerts. My husband's reaction was the same as yours, soda--he cringed. Don said something like, "If you come to my solo shows, you know I will be expressing my opinions," but the thing is, we didn't know that then. A good portion of the audience did, but the rest of us were just casual fans (at least, I was at THAT point). There were all kinds of stereotypes on display that night--not only Don's comment about the Deep South, but whispered comments from my hubby and people around us saying that Don was just your typical liberal Democratic rock star. But as you pointed out, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even rock stars, and Don didn't go on & on about it, he just started singing the song and let the song say it for him! Then he went from doing OPS ("Other People's Stuff"--he said "I always like to do other people's stuff" ) to singing his hits again, and everyone was happy.

Didn't we have commentary on the boys' weight/appearance in an article in the recent past? The problem is the new Barbie/Ken standard if you want to sing. Video did indeed kill the radio star.

Right DF. I have no problem with him expressing his opinion as long as he doesn't get nasty about it! But honestly he is so talented that it would take a lot worse than such defensive comments to make me not want to go to a show. He rocks no matter what. IMO, after the gift of music he's given, the audience shouldn't be so rude as to boo him. Whatever happened to respectfully disagreeing?

I always liked Linda Ronstadt. I listen to her songs (occasianlly) at my work. They have the oldies playing. The one (they play mostly) is you're no good. Always reminds me of that documentary when they were talking about how good her voice is. And I have to agree. I wonder what she is doing now-a-days. Hopefully still performing.

Quick, odd question--how long did Linda and JD Souther date? Was it on and off for over a decade? I know it was a couple years in the early 70s, but I swear I jut read an interview with her from the early 80s (like 1980) they they were back together then...

I can see them as a couple tHt would have long stretches apart, then get back together for a bit. By all accounts, though, they're still close friends today....

Linda's memoir has a FaceBook page now, (https://www.facebook.com/LindaRonstadtOfficial?rf=109357999083599) with a few previews from the book. It truly sounds like it will be solely about her musical journey and not about anything about her personal life, save her musical roots in Arizona. A shame--I wanted stories about her time gallivanting around in cars with Glenn in the 70s! ;)

I hope time has softened her stance on her popularity in the 70s and the music she made then. In past interviews she's so critical of her voice and singing and musical choices then--I think she's associates "commercial" and "popular" with "trite" and "undeserving." She was a risk-taker and true artist even then--I hope she appreciates that now, looking back.

sodascouts
07-09-2013, 12:32 PM
If she leaves out the personal, the memoir will be pretty dry. Here's hoping she had the sense to infuse the book with some heart.

I have no idea why she's so hard on her 70s self. Maybe it's some kind of defense mechanism about her becoming less popular later - like "I'm more artistic now; that's why I don't sell as well" and in order to maintain that she rags on her "less artistic" 70s self.

Who knows.

Linda was beautiful in the 70's and had a beautiful voice to match. I had several albums, and I remember feeling disappointed when she did the album with Nelson Riddle. After that, she seemed to fall off the face of the earth. Selfishly, I would have liked her career to go another way. :-(

I have to think she'll have to do press for the book--I don't know how eager to is to sing anymore, but she can still do sit down interviews. Maybe Oprah can snag her for her channel!

In a recent interview with JD, he implied strongly he had chatted with her about the book, and seeing how intwined her voice and his words were over the years, I'm sure he plays a part in it. And I still think Glenn's silence (vs. Don's vocal "no") during London press junket question on speaking to Linda re: the book, implies he spoke with her, too. She commented once she discovered a lot of songs and artists via Glenn's record collection, so he has to be a relatively major part of a chapter or two, no matter if she talks about net personal life or not!

The fact it's only 208 pages mystifies me--maybe it's small print!

There's an interview from like spring with her on YouTube--at some conference on Southwest music. She's still her bubbly self--didn't seem guarded like she can in some print interviews. Her vocal tone has changed discernibly in her speaking voice, but whether that is from age or due to her thyroid disease, I don't know.

That's too bad. I didn't know that.

We have 5 or 6 of her first albums and she was beautiful on those. Voice too. I guess I should say 'did' have. We gave all of our vinyls to our daughter as she's really in to them. All except the Eagles ones, of course! I kinda wish we hadn't done that cause I miss them sometimes! But we don't have a turntable and probably won't get one so......

I still have a few of her albums, I love one specifically titled 'We Ran' which has a brilliant John Hiatt cover.

If anyone is interested, here is the link to an article written 30 years ago about her trip to South/ern Africa... I don't think she won many people over by coming here at the time of the cultural boycott, when it would seem that the only real reason to have done so was financial. She claimed after the fact not to have known about the boycott.

SA was a very different country back then.

In YT comments, she gets a lot of "Sun City" slack. I don't know how she couldn't have known about artists boycotting the nation due to Apartheid, but I thought she later gave some reasoning that art was for everyone and rose above political matters, no matter the county's moral issues....

Linda is going to be doing an interview at the 92nd St. Y in September.

If anyone is in the NY area, these things are usually pretty great. I've seen Bono and the Edge interviewed there, Stephen Colbert and some other interesting people as well. They generally have excellent interviewers and it's a very entertaining evening.

They often have a book signing afterwards as well. I wonder if they will with her, since it seems as if this interview will be in conjunction with her book.

A new poster in the "Linda and Glenn" thread gave it a warm review--said it's pretty close to the vest in terms of gossip/romance, but Glenn and Don are mentioned, and she writes in a compelling tone.

Happy to see her out and about again. Even though she's pretty down on her rock n roll days, it would be nice if this rise in public presence would get her in the minds of Rock n Roll Hall of Fame voters again...Though, being the iconoclast she is, maybe she'd refuse...

From Roger Friedman, Showbiz411--Linda won't sing on book tour (http://www.showbiz411.com/2013/07/24/linda-ronstadt-sings-no-more-wont-warble-on-book-publicity-tour)

Linda Ronstadt is not singing anymore. When she hits the publicity circuit this September for her book, “Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir,” Ronstadt will not need a band for Letterman, Fallon, or any other show. I am told that she has retired, in that sense. There’ll be no “You’re No Good” or “Heat Wave” or “Blue Bayou.”
It’s not that she can’t sing; she can. But she doesn’t sing every day, has no interest in revving up her engines, and doesn’t feel she can meet expectations of fans. A friend says, “She’s 67, and she’s doing other things.”
The book, by the way, is not a kiss and tell, but a look back at all her work with the Eagles and Jackson Browne and JD Souther, all the songwriters she introduced, and the many musical adventures she had with scores of people she helped make famous. And Linda wrote the book herself– no ghost writer. I can’t wait to read it.
But this no singing business is frustrating for her fans. New generations need to be exposed to Ronstadt, one of the most remarkable pop voices of all time. Linda, change your mind! We need you now more than ever!
By the way, there’s newly remastered version of her great album, “Heart Like a Wheel,” produced by Peter Asher, on Amazon.com and Spotify. I just bought it, and it’s still a classic. Cissy Houston sings background on the James Carr hit, “Dark End of the Street,” too!

I wish she'd unleash her pipes at least once during the publicity blitz. Perhaps it's more that she doesn't want to sing her oldies hits....?

A positive review from Peter Lewry, a Linda biographer. Though he has this caveat: (http://peterlewryblog.weebly.com/1/post/2013/07/linda-ronstadt-simple-dreams.html)

If I had one minor complaint it would be the lack of information or background to her mid- to late-seventies work -*Prisoner In Disguise, Hasten Down The Wind, Simple Dreams and Living In The USA. In the book she talks about hating the big arena tours spending night after night playing shows in venues that were not designed with good sound in mind. This could explain why this period is almost completely ignored. A shame as this was when I fell in love with her music and when she released some of my favourite albums.

I guess it's good news that she does indeed seem to cover her early years at Troub and with the guys in detail...a bit sad she skimps over the later half of the decade--my favorite collaborations 'tween her and JD Souther occurred then...and isn't that the Blue Bayou era, too?

Unless it's from the era when Asylum was trying to woo her away from Capitol, or the rumors were strong she was going to leave...Then Capitol went to the nutty expense of pretty much promoting the move by making the tees? Does look like her hair from the 72-74 era...

I swear I read in a book that JD and Jackson and the Eagles told David Geffen he had to "rescue" Linda off Capitol, and Geffen then told Linda to fulfill one more record for Captiol, and he'd buy her out of rest of her contract...?

I have been so gutted about his since last nite--so sad. To lose that whopper of a voice...it's like a Greek tragedy, to have that particular skill/talent robbed from her, among the many other ailments Parkinsin's causes...And I aways held out hope I's hear her sing live one day in concert, they perhaps the autobiography would spur her to leave retirement...

I assume Riga is a big part of why she ddin't want to be invovled in the Eagles doc--to me her voice has sounded more gravelly in interviews these past few years--perhaps it and other evidences of the condition are more noticeable now, and she wanted to deal with it and reveal it on her own time and in her own terms, versus having people speculate on it after seeing doc. That said, I wonder how many of her friends knew she was grappling with this.

it is lovely to see all the love and praise coming her way n social media (and a lot of renewed calls to get her in RRHoF).

OMG - This is so upsetting. My heart goes out to Linda that she will continue to have a full and rewarding future in spite of this setback. When I first saw this, I immediately thought of AEW.

And I have to agree it is a travesty that given all of her immense talent and influence, Linda has not yet been inducted into the R&R HOF. Shame on them! :fingerwag:

Devastating news indeed. Linda's voice and part in musical history will always be that of a legend IMO and hopefully the RRHOF will realise the error of her omission and correct it.

NYCF, were you able to go to this? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

PM:

I did go to the 92nd St. Y event, and it was a great evening. Linda was interviewed by John Rockwell, who used to be the rock critic for the NY Times, and has been friends with Linda for 40 years. So there was a real ease between them, which made the conversation flow. If you have seen the excellent 2-part Tavis Smiley interview, she covered a lot of the same topics that she spoke about at the Y.

I particularly enjoyed how well versed Linda was in all sorts of music. She has explored so many types of music in her career and her knowledge of the history of those styles was so impressive. It was great to hear her speak about all of the people she has worked with and her various projects. I saw Sting do a benefit recently at the Public Theater, where he played the music from a Broadway musical that he is working on and talked about the creative process, and it reminded me of Linda. These are true musicians who are always looking for something new musically to explore.

They didn’t cover the whole Troubadour scene in as much depth as I would have liked, and she did not go into the story about hiring the Eagles as her band. She did mention them, and specifically said what a great writer Don was and what a great country player Bernie was. But not too much detail on all that, sadly. She did mention a bunch of the other people like Jackson, JD, etc., and spoke about that time with great affection.

Another story I found very funny is how she came to be in the Pirates of Penzance on Broadway. She was talking about how she didn’t like playing sports arenas on tour. She said they had terrible acoustics and that everyone was more interested in drinking, smoking and getting hot dogs than listening to the show. She told (I think) her manager how she wanted to play “a place with a curtain”. It was so funny how she spoke about this and kept emphasizing playing a place with a curtain. Somehow she decided she wanted to try out for Pirates. She was laughing about how clueless she was in her thought that it was no big deal to meet with Joseph Papp and tell him that she wanted to do this. She later found out, as she put it, “People were waiting in line to work with Joe Papp. And Meryl Streep was in that line”. I loved her sense of humor looking back on it. And of course that story got a big laugh from the NY audience.

She told another great story about how cheap Jerry Brown is. Apparently she was very close with Rosemary Clooney after working with Nelson Riddle. But one of her first social meetings was a lunch for the two of them at Rosemary’s house. Jerry Brown showed up at Linda’s house as she was getting ready (this was long after they dated, but she said they remain good friends), and invited himself along. And then, instead of buying a hostess gift, he insisted they take the flowers that someone had just given Linda from the vase and bring them along for Rosemary. She said Jerry Brown is pretty tight with a buck. The way she told the story was hilarious.

She also had some amazing stories about working with EmmyLou Harris and Dolly Parton, the first time she saw Bonnie Raitt at the Troubadour, and many of the other wonderful female singers she had worked with. I loved her story about Bonnie. I guess Bonnie came out on stage looking pretty, with her guitar, and Linda and her girlfriends (I forget who she was with) were thinking that Bonnie wouldn’t be all that. And then Bonnie started to sing :-) One of the things I found really endearing about Linda is that she was so effusive in her praise of all the women singers she has known. She spoke so eloquently of working with them and the creative process.

The interview was probably 50 minutes and then they had a 20 minute or so Q&A session. After that, Linda was going to sign books. The line was massive. Longer than I’ve ever seen it at one of those events. But sadly, after about 20 minutes, she had to stop. She had said in the interview that the Parkinson’s affects her ability to write. She looked exhausted and I felt for her.

It was such a wonderful evening and I’m so glad we were able to go and see her. What a funny, down to earth, kind and talented woman she is. She has had such an interesting life and I admire her for how she has explored so many genres of music. I haven’t had time to sit down and read the book yet, but I’m really looking forward to it.

Sorry if this is more information than you wanted. LOL

I'm enjoying reading her book and am amazed at her musical knowledge! (I know nothing! Nothing! lol) But, she came from a musical family, so it's natural for her.

She did have very nice things to say about Bernie in it, so far. "He was a solid, reliable guy, more ambitious for the music to be good than he was to make himself noticed." And about how talented he was.

I've had time to do a little reading today and there is actually a chapter titled 'The Eagles'! Missed it on my quick scan of pictures! Not really any new info though. How she met Don at the Troubadour and thought he was a great drummer and singer and about them (Don, Glenn, Bernie, and Randy) practicing vocals in her and JD's living room and hearing Witchy Woman for the first time.

Thanks MC, I enjoyed that. I do disagree with Linda's statement that art shouldn't be frozen in time, and I'm not sure why a recording artist would make such a statement.

I took that quote to mean she's lamenting the fact that she thinks an early recording sounds amateurish (to her, after a decade spent perfecting things. Not to me, I ADORE her version of that song, I think it's killer), I don't think she's being literal. She's a perfectionist, and that's her way of saying, "Darn, I can't go back and re-do it." Or, who knows, maybe she thinks there shouldn't be any recordings made, ever! It reminds me of a quote from Glenn, I think it was, from the documentary saying that some of his early writing efforts or recordings sound really "rough" now. I'm sure all singers/actors/painters/authors who have long-lasting success feel this way about their early pieces. I even heard a sports announcer say he was mortified to listen to recordings of himself from years earlier. I can understand Linda being uncomfortable during the recording of the song, but I can't believe she doesn't like the final product.

Glenn has never done anything like this; it is Don who seems happy to do this sort of thing. Of course Souther would be an option but I still think they are more likely to have someone she influenced.

I just saw the Saturday Night Live show with Linda in it from 1979 I think. She was the musical guest but she was in one sketch. In the sketch Bill Murray is singing at a VIP entertainment area at an airport. He sees Linda and he starts freaking out and surrounds her. He sings her song, You're No Good, really badly right to her. It's so funny. He is annoying Linda like crazy and he won't leave her alone so John Belushi who is being her body guard punches him and he falls. It's just hillarious!

I'm currently reading Linda's book while I do like it so far, and she does mention Bernie, Don, and Glenn by name outside of the Eagles chapter, I am surprised that the Eagles chapter itself is less than 2 full pages long!

I guess it's nice that they even have their own chapter at all with such a short book. I am reading it because I dig her, but am just genuinely surprised that chapter isn't longer. I feel she could've put a little more behind the scenes anecdotes to give us a peak into that world. ...like she does with a story about Keith Richards and Gram Parsons.

well I'm not done yet...just finished the Eagles chapter..so we'll see!

Another thing I noticed is she never outright said in the book that she was dating JD. She talks about living with him, and said they remained friends after moving into separate places. She kind of hints at it I guess...but the way she talks about it, you might think they were just close friends.

but it's not like it was a secret that they dated...I don't get the vagueness of it all.

for example:

After about a year and a half, John David moved to a house a few blocks away. We remained friends but had drifted into different webs of our own needs and interests. He was writing a lot, and I was traveling nonstop. We've always had feelings of affection and sympathy for each other. I still want to know about the songs he's just written.

but it's not like it was a secret that they dated...I don't get the vagueness of it all.

for example:Agree--she is so vague about any personal details....

I just adore Linda. As a vocalist myself, I admire her versatility and how beautifully she sings everything she does. I just felt sick when I heard about her Parkinson's diagnosis. She is just an amazing person.

I think that duets album look great - I already have some of those songs, but there are a few on there I haven't heard. I might have to get that one :)

I hear you, PM, but I wonder if it's really 'bemoaning' or if she is simply a very humble person. I keep thinking of that old adage: we are our own worst critics. I appreciate that she has never allowed her successes to become ego issues like many in the entertainment industry do. (I think it's one of the things we love most about our boys. They don't let their success define who they are and tend to downplay it.) The fact that her illness has robbed us of future live performances or new recordings is sad, but I'm thrilled that her talents and accomplishments are being acknowledged and preserved for future generations. She is a true original and her sound is unique. You can't hear one of her songs and not know immediately that you're listening to Linda Ronstadt!I agree that her self-critiques are something we would rather not hear repeatedly, but they can never diminish the pleasure we derive from the fruits of her labors. Just my two cents worth.

I was in tears when I saw Glenn's speech. When Glenn can tell so many details about about Linda's career without reading from a piece of paper (this album sold that much; that guy produced this album in 1984 etc.), it seems that he's really been following her career. I wish I could always feel that way about people I love - just enjoying their success without feeling envious. True friendship and love.

Linda Ronstadt is an icon in the music industry. She has a one of a kind voice. It is sad that she couldn't be there and I'm sure that if she could have she would have. I think her not caring one way or the other is maybe a coverup for the fact she couldn't be there due to health issues. Just my guess. Although she seems like she's always been a loner go her own way gal, and maybe sge truely doesn't aless about it. Nobody will really know except close friends and family.

I just saw this album in Best Buy the other day and bought it. It's good overall, but calling "Hasten Down the Wind" a duet with Don Henley is REEEALLLLY stretching it. He has no parts where he sings alone, and just sings with Linda on part of the verse and the chorus. He's obviously just backing her. Frankly, I think it's misleading to market it as a "duet" in order to interest Don Henley fans. Still worth it for Linda, but don't buy it to hear Don.

I'm so glad Don H was there to pay tribute. Here's what he said at the benefit:

As was often the case Sunday, Henley pointed out the game-changing effect Ronstadt had on the careers of so many aspiring songwriters when she turned her attention to one of their songs.

“This song got very little notice when it came out on our second album in April of 1973,” Henley said of “Desperado.” “When Linda recorded it and put it out on her ‘Don’t Cry Now’ album in September of 1973, everything changed.”

I found it really interesting that she was talking about how wonderful Glenn was and how she would have liked to have had the whole Shiloh band play with her. I have her self titled album from 1972 that I have been playing quite a bit. This is the one that has Bernie, Randy, Glenn and Don on it. Several songs are recorded live at the Troubadour. It's so interesting to see the credits on that album. Not only are the future Eagles on it, but so are some Shiloh members, Richard and Mike Bowden. And the one that surprised me most was that her manager John Boylan was credited as one of the guitarists on 5 of the songs.

On a semi-related note - I just saw Steven Page a few weeks ago (former front man of The Barenaked Ladies) when he was here in Memphis. One of the songs he wrote and performed was "Linda Rondstadt In The 70s"

An excerpt from the lyrics:

'Cause you like Linda Ronstadt's older stuff
From the 70s
You know she'll never be the same
You know she'll never be the same
As she used to be
She wore those roller skates
On disco dates
While the Eagles played

Steven Page also played what he calls the "Feel Good Strum" - basically he and his band are strumming along as they start singing random song lyrics to see if they fit the rhythm of the "feel good strum." One of the songs they tried was Hotel California - it didn't fit and everyone had a great laugh!

Didn't realize the Eagles got a mention in there. Cool!

Linda with the other KCH honorees last night at the State Dinner. This is the only picture I found from last night. The big gala is tonight and it will be on on December 15th.

I saw the potential singers that could pay tribute to Linda. Trisha and Garth were there. Trisha could pay tribute to Linda. Garth could do Earth, Wind and Fire or he could just be there. The same with Trisha. Carrie is there. SO I can see her paying tribute to Linda. She did pay tribute to Linda at R&R HoF induction. Thomas Rhett could be there for Linda.

Aaron Neville is there. So that's one who's probably paying tribute to her.

Garth could be there for Linda.

He was just on Kelly Clarkson's new show talking about how much he loves James Taylor's music so I think it's a fair bet he's at least a big fan of that kind of music and era of the whole Laurel Canyon thing.

I'm not a 90s country guy but I always liked Garth Brooks! He had an energy that got my attention.

I think Don was there. I don't know if he performed, but the person who spokes before the video montage (he might had done the video montage) and the performance. I'm still trying to find out more.

This quote was in the article.

Don Henley, who received his own Kennedy Center Honor in 2016 as a member of the Eagles, praised Ronstadt’s “curiosity about multiple music styles” that led her to explore early country-rock, mainstream pop, Broadway and Mexican folk ballads.
“And Linda owned each and every genre she explored,” Henley said.

Trisha was there to honor Linda. She, Carrie, Aaron Neville, and all female mariachi band.

Looks like Don was there tonight. GettyImages really haven't posted that many pictures this weekend.

The roster of stars who turned out for the efficiently produced three-hour event, hosted by previous honoree LL Cool J, surpassed some other recent years: The list included Steven Spielberg, Maura Tierney and Pierce Brosnan for Field; Cedric the Entertainer and Joseph Gordon Levitt for “Sesame Street”; and Don Henley and Underwood for Ronstadt, with Underwood singing the Ronstadt songs “Blue Bayou” and “When Will I Be Loved.”

Yep - I'm looking forward to seeing this, too. Did I miss it or do we know the TV broadcast date yet?

ETA: Nevermind, I went back in this thread and saw that shun posted that it will be televised on December 15th.

I watched the Kennedy Center Honors broadcast last night, and Linda was the first to be honored. Don (Henley) took the stage first for the introductory presentation, but did not perform. He talked about when he and Glenn were in her band, of course. Other speakers were Kevin Kline, and Emmylou Harris. Performers included Carrie Underwood, a female Spanish group performing songs from the Pirates of Penzance (sorry can't remember their name), and Trisha Yearwood and Aaron Neville. Linda got very emotional several times and seemed to be extremely moved by the honor ceremony. I almost cried myself a couple of times.

I watched the whole thing, but it was a great show this year. I don't know much about Michael Tilson Thomas, but I enjoyed his tribute. The camera was Linda and she was mouthing Somewhere.

Here's an interview Linda did that night after the gala and her thoughts on her tribute. I think she was talking about Don even though she said his name, but I know she was talking about Don when she said he came back to support KCH.

Thanks so much for this! God bless her, she's still just fabulous- a fabulous person, above all! Really enjoyed this photo tribute. She deserves all the recognition she's getting these days, and it's long overdue. 💖

I watched her part of the KCH too. She was very emotional, which made me emotional! Doesn't take much! I think Don's voice cracked a bit too in his part.

Which reminds me that many of the artists that were a part of my life in song are reaching 'that' age. It's started with Glenn's passing and will only get worse as time goes on. It's hard to think about.

I think that was the point for people to not notice. The writing was so small. The album covers were going so fast that if you weren't paying attention to that picture, you wouldn't notice the words changed. If that one guy didn't notice that changed, nobody would had known that the album title on Livin' In The USA was changed.

Yeah the revised album cover thing is inexcusable. Whether the image was 'lifted' off the internet or intentionally changed by someone doesn't really matter. What gross negligence that this wasn't detected by the editor's, producers, or whoever before the show was broadcast. People get paid to notice this stuff and I agree someone needs to be held accountable. I wonder if we'll ever find out how this happened?

I watched the documentary online last week. I really enjoyed it. It was soo cool to hear Linda talk throughout the documentary. Well put together. I loved the ending. I won't spoiled it for people who haven't seen it.

She was a beautiful lady (still is at 73) and had a beautiful voice.

We watched it the other night (got the DVD from our library). It's great! Narrated by Linda herself, it's a fantastic insight on her life and career. She was quite the firecracker when it came to her career. "You can't do that," she'd be told... but she did it anyway. Love her!
