View Full Version : Who should play the Eagles if they did a biopic?

sodascouts

I'm not sure myself - I'll have to give it some thought. We need people to play all the past and present members of the Eagles and Irving, at the very least. Any ideas? You can have different actors for different ages. You don't have to come up with everybody if you can't, just put those you can think of.

Maybe they'll do a movie, maybe not, but this can be fun exercise!

Ooh, that's right. I haven't seen any recent photos - how old is that movie?

And I was thinking maybe Josh Harnett would be good for Randy:

Good choices Soda. I agree with most of them. Like FP, I'm not sold on Joseph Fiennes as Don. I'm also not sure about Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Tim either. However, right off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone else who would be better.

Hmmm.........good topic but hard to think of people right now. I like the suggestion for Tim....at least in that particular pic he looked a lot like him to me. Johnny Depp has the high cheekbones so he could probably pull it off but like someone else said, Johnny is more edgy. Tim has such a mellow voice and is so laid back.

The only ones I can think of right now are for Don

TJ Thyne from the tv show "Bones." He's got the 'fro and the bright blue eyes goin' on. Of course NO ONE compares to any of the guys...but..... 8)

If the bio goes to current times, I think they should all play themselves. I know Glenn would go for it because he has experience acting and Joe has done a few shows too. I don't know if Don and Timothy could be talked into it or not. I can't see Don wanting anything that personal brought into the public eye, he is really a private man.

Glennsallnighter
05-11-2008, 06:24 PM
Well they could certainly put in actual footage from shows, as they are all recorded anyway. So in that way they would be playing themselves.

I think the guys playing themselves might be awkward! It's rarely done for biopics - probably because when only some of the people are playing themselves while others are actors, it gets weird.

That's an interesting thought about Glenn's  eye colour, Soda. I've found that in recent pictures of him his eyes always look blue, whereas I can rarely tell on the older pics.

In London his eyes looked very blue on stage (and heart-stoppingly so, I might add :fainting:).

Hi, this is my first time posting on this site.

Chris Isaak is delicious. I saw him perform when he opened for Stevie Nicks, and his charisma and energy reminded me of Glenn, as well as his propensity to make self-deprecating jokes. He goes out into the audience though - and since me and my friends were standing in the second row with no one in front of us at the time, he came and stood on the chairs in front of us and played a solo right there in our faces!!!! Then, he ran all the way to the lawn and played to them. So awesome.

These are all some great choices. I really like the idea of Owen Wilson as a young Joe.

I wasn't able to find any good pictures to compare but I've always thought that William Peterson (Grissom on the tv show C.S.I.) shared a resemblance to Don. He's got the blue eyes and some of Don's mannerisms. I don't know if he could portray Don of today but I just think there's a resemblance there.

Ive always been a dreamer
02-05-2011, 02:08 PM
Yeah, my top choice to play Joe would be Owen Wilson. I think Sean Penn would work, too. I also think Jon Heder could actually play Bernie if he discarded the geekiness and toughened up. But, hey, he's an actor, so it would be a challenge for him to see if he could pull it off - there is definitely a resemblence there to me.

As far as someone playing Glenn, even though Billy Crudup didn't actually play Glenn, his character, Russell Hammond, in Almost Famous was based on Glenn, and he did a great job, IMO. I can see some resemblence between Eric Bana and Glenn of the HFO era, so he may be able to pull it off.

I don't remember if anyone has mentioned him or not, but I were choosing who would play Glenn....I would DEFINITELY choose Michael Imperioli!!!!!!! If you've watched him on Detroit 187 or any of his past shows, you know that he can get that same INTENSE look in his eyes that Glenn gets.....a very quiet strength about him. Plus he could pull off just about any decade of Glenn. He has a THICK head of hair, so I'm pretty certain they could give him the HFO hair. ;)

Glad you ladies agree! FP, he can very much pull off the "I'm in charge" stare. ;) Like Glenn, you can see so much in his eyes.

I was watching an episode of Without a Trace the other night and this guy, John Allen Nelson, was guest starring. I'd never heard of him before but he really reminded me of Don on the show. I can't find a picture of him that shows him the same way he looked on the show. The pictures don't remind me of Don as much but still resemble him I think. Maybe you guys have seen him on something else before.

I really can't see Ben Stiller playing Glenn either. But for me, it's not that I don't like Ben Stiller, it's just that I don't think Ben's persona is a good match for Glenn. I feel the same way about Johnny Depp playing Timothy. He probably looks more like Timothy than most of the others suggested, but again, his persona is pretty much exactly the opposite of what I think of when I think of Timothy.

I tend to agree that Tim is the hardest to find a good lookalike for. I can't think of any really good choices to play him.

On the other hand, there were a couple of good suggestions for Randy. I particularly liked Soda's suggestion of Josh Hartnett. They'd need to give him some chest hair, but otherwise I think he could pull it off nicely ...

As far as people who can both act and sing, I think if they did his hair and facial hair right, Oscar Isaac would make a good Glenn. He's not an exact match, but he's an excellent actor and singer and would probably do a really good job.

I agree that Bradley Cooper could be Don. Not sure about the singing, but he is so good looking, maybe they can dub someone's singing voice in :-)

Hmmm, spent a lot of time thinking about this (more than I could afford actually!) but I saw an old episode of Without A trace and thought that Anthony LaPaglia would make a good Irving. Okay, he doesn't look like him but he has that same short-guy, bolshie attitude. I could just see him facing dowm Bahamian officials

The other people suggested for Glenn and Randy look the part though I don't know them. I don't know who could play Timothy - he's definitely the hardest to cast - maybe Rob Lowe????

Anyway, needless to say, I spent a long time debating over Don H and finally came up with the English actor Richard Armitage. He has clear blue eyes, chiselled features, a dark chocolate voice and bundles of sex appeal. Okay, he's 6 feet 4 but hey he plays a hobbit so he could get away with it!! And he is musical, he plays the cello and dances (The Argentine Tango is his favourite - swoon) I don't know if he can sing but who cares  they can dub Don's voice. I'd be happy anyway to look at him and hear Don :faint:

On a lighter note - how about Will Ferrell for Bernie. I could just see him plucking a banjo!!

A question about this hypothetical biopic - what period would it focus on? How would it be structured?

I could see one set during the HFO tour, allowing the casting of established actors (and much easier for fantasy casting), perhaps with flashbacks to the 1970s with younger, lesser known actors. I don't want to see a bunch of fortysomethings playing twentysomethings. I need them to be "dangerous boys" rather than old enough to know better.

If tv series like Game of Thrones and The Borgias can do so well at casting young actors, then the Eagles shouldn't be too hard. Thinking of The Borgias, how about François Arnaud for Don Henley and David Oakes for Joe Walsh? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw8GbyIaEW8

sodascouts
04-14-2014, 09:07 PM
Yeah, I think it would be more workable to cast young guys and add makeup to make them look older than casting different actors for the young roles. The exception would be if we go back to their kiddie days but that portion would need to be very brief, I think!

I can see HFO or even current day book ending an extended flashback - starting "in media res" like a classical epic - but the 70s were the wild ride, and that should be the focus, not the "milk and cookies" tour. Now, if you include the member's variety of issues during the 80s, the HFO reunion could be the climax and current day be the resolution. That could also be an interesting story structure, although the majority of the rising conflict would still have to be the 70s. I think that kind of structure would be more conducive to a miniseries than a 2 hour movie, though!

Houston Baby
04-14-2014, 11:09 PM
If I was writing the movie I would start with the MTV HFO special and then flashback to the 70s beginning when Don & Glenn met. I would then take it thru the decade ending with Glenn's phone call to Don H. ending the EAGLES. I would love a miniseries!!

Another thought: now that we have the documentary, would a biopic be redundant?

Of course, as I tell my drama students, allowing the audience to watch something happening is a lot more interesting than having a narrator tell everyone what happened.

Plus, maybe there would be more attention given to romance! I'm still disappointed that the doc didn't even mention that Stevie had dated Don and Joe! Her 60 seconds of interview comments at the end were so generic that they could have come from any artist. "They made me want to be better." Where's the personal insight in that?

But I digress. I guess all that to say that I don't think a biopic would be redundant.

Agree/disagree?

Houston Baby
04-15-2014, 08:54 AM
I agree! I would like more of a biopic. HOTE was definitely a documentary of the band. I would like something softer if that is the correct word. A flowing story of the behind the scenes and personal lives, the romances of the 70s. Something that the Eagles would probably NOT want - LOL!

That's what they did in the movie Captain America, they made him look really skinny before his enhancements. I thought he'd just filmed that part earlier and then did intense body building for the other scenes but I read that they just made him look skinnier digitally.

Now it cost a lot of $$$$ to do that, not sure the movie company would pay that kind of money for an Eagles biopic, but it would work.

Leadon 1970s = can't think of anyone

Henley then = Bob Ross
Henley now = Robin Williams
Frey = can't think of anyone
Felder = Peter Cetera
Walsh = Jeff Daniels
Schmit = David Gilmour

I've been waiting to post but I've actually been working on a Eagles fancast for a couple years and oddly after Glenn passed I finally found all the actors I would want/could see playing them. The actor I have for Glenn though I've pictured playing him for 3 years (thanks to the HOTE doc) and that's Colin O'Donoghue. I already posted (http://buffyfan145.tumblr.com/post/138342207369/heres-a-little-preview-of-my-eagles-biopic) a preview and why I think Colin would be a great choice for Glenn, as I'm a huge fan of his too, and he still keeps reminding me of Glenn. I'm posting the full one to my Tumblr very soon as I tried to find the pictures of the guys and the actors that look most alike and I'm working on the edit. I actually do fancasts for books I read, especially when they get announced as a film/TV show, and I have fancasts already for The Beatles (http://buffyfan145.tumblr.com/post/88852852524/seen-some-really-great-fancast-ideas-for-the) and a couple for Fleetwood Mac (though I'm worried some of the actors I wanted are now considered too old LOL). It's something I've done since I was little as I love biopics and I've actually been told I should've been a casting director since I try not only to want actors who resemble the people but also I know can play the part. :)

Scott Bakula could easily pull off a more modern Glenn, I think. Similar build, facial features etc. Scott might just need a little hair dye.

I fail to see even the slightest resemblance between David Gilmour & Schmit, even when Gilmour had long har, and why musicians would be cast as other musicians I don't know. George really does look to me a bit like Don more than Glenn. As for Aaron Tveit, I'm a huge fan of his too and he's part of my fancast I'm working on as well but as Felder. Aaron grew his hair out and facial hair for a musical he did in England and for a bit on his TV show "Graceland" and he looked so much like Felder. I too noticed Aaron looking like Felder during the HOTE doc the same as I noticed Colin O'Donoghue resembling Glenn, and how both Aaron and Colin are musicians and have been in musicals too. Just not sure if Aaron can play guitar, but Colin does play guitar and piano and was in a band back in Ireland too.

There were also some good suggestions for Randy - my personal favorite being Josh Hartnett. I posted these pictures earlier and remarked that he'd need to get some chest hair, but otherwise I think he could pull it off nicely ...

I finally finished my Eagles fancast and posted it on my Tumblr. I tried to find pictures of the guys and each actor I chose that looked similar. I went with actors that are in their 30s or late 20s so it would work for telling majority of the story. All the actors I chose too can sing (including some having Broadway experience) and majority are guitarists and have their own albums & songs out through their own bands, solo work, and/or film soundtracks. I also picked them because each one has played a character that reminded me of how the guys either came across to me or what I've read about them. Here's my choices:

Glenn - Colin O'Donoghue
Don - Jack O'Connell
Randy - Scott Porter
Bernie - T.J. Miller
Felder - Aaron Tveit
Joe - Scott Michael Foster
Timothy - Steven Strait

remember that they were between the ages of 23-32 so you'd probably have to find a younger person to play each one.

02-26-2016, 05:14 PM
I was going by how "Jersey Boys" casted their musical and the film version with actors in their late 20s/30s that looked young enough to pass as still in their 20s but with make up could play them in their 40s and beyond. Plus, comparing how people in general used to look in their 20s back in the 1970s and earlier they looked so much older than people in their 20s do now. I'm almost 30 myself and get told all the time that people think I'm just 21 or 22 years old. I also remember being shocked learning how young the guys were in the 70s as to me I thought they were older.

Kind of an out of the box thought, but Daniel Radcliffe as Glenn. He's got the good hair, basic facial structure and blue eyes. Put a mustache and long hair on him, and you've got a possibility.

Throw long hair on Frankie Muniz and you've got Randy. Cause you need an actor with a baby face.

Again, if they were younger, I'd suggest a part deux for Billy Crudup as Glenn and Jason Lee as Henley.

Funny too, Matthew and Scott played the same character at different ages in the "Speed Racer" movie and they have the same birthday. LOL Good choices for Timothy and Felder, and I love Tom Felton too.

Since Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks would probably be a big part of a movie/miniseries I realized I hadn't posted who I think could play them. For Linda I see either Jenna Coleman or Maia Mitchell, while for Stevie I see Rose McIver but she would need brown contacts. Funny thing is too Jenna is British, while Maia is Australian and Rose is from New Zealand so I noticed even in my own fancasting some aren't American actors.

Andrew just joined the cast for their upcoming season and Joanna plays Ariel from "The Little Mermaid", while my choice for Stevie, Rose McIver plays Tinkerbell and my choice for Joe, Scott Michael Foster played Kristoff from "Frozen". Maybe with blonde hair Andrew could work for Joe. I like Joanna as Cindy and funny thing is in my fancast I did I had fellow "OUAT" cast member Colin O'Donoghue play Glenn is that their characters (Ariel & Hook) on the show have a really close relationship too, just not romantic but more sibling like but I loved their scenes together and they had 3 episodes together too where they went off on adventures. So they already have chemistry together from the show.

Wow that's very interesting, especially Colin and Joanna! I saw Love and Mercy based on Brian Wilson's life and there were two actors playing Brian both very good! John Cusack and Paul Dano. Elisabeth Banks played Melinda Ledbetter, Brian's second wife. Amazing true life multi layered story impossible to properly condense into a 2 hour movie but they did a fairly decent job.

I saw that movie Dawn and they did such a great job playing Brian and his 2nd wife, and I loved it!!! :D It's one of the more recent examples of a good music biopic.

I have been watching "House of Cards" and Derek Cecil reminded me of an early 80's Don Henley.

I can definitely see that. Funny, he's from Texas, too!

Lol, DJ, neither one is my son; they are both Hollywood actors. It was priscillaupstate who posted a picture of her son. :)

I see that Hugh Jackman will be playing Gary Hart in a film called The Frontrunner. Will there be a Don Henley character to hold an infamous party? Who could play a 1988 Henley?

Noticed while watching "Grantchester" recently that British actor Robson Green reminds me of older Glenn. He also reminds me of Scott Bakula too, which I've seen on here and see myself the comparisons to older Glenn too. Plus Robson's also a musician/singer as well and would work if they were to have an older and younger actor play each Eagle.

Did Hart meet Donna Rice at a Henley party? I remember Henley called her a bimbo. Or was that Patti Davis?

Interesting, this is new to me. On another note, I'd love to try Don's gumbo. He's an East Texan through and through.

I'm kind of surprised this story is apparently getting a major treatment with an A-list star. Many people don't remember it/weren't alive when it happened.

Delilah, maybe we could have another thread at some point Eagles Who Cook. It was interesting to learn that Don cooked for his own lavish party. I'd have taken the easy way out and had it catered.

I think Hollywood's been scraping the barrel for some time now. But there may also be some nostalgia at play too. Gary Hart was supposed to be the Next Big Thing, if memory serves me right. If it doesn't, I'm sure the filmmaker will make it seem like it was so. Henley's "character" might well have a cameo here as UTW suggested.

Oooh, NMB, such a good idea! I'd love that kind of thread if we can get enough subject matter.

That would be something. I bet most of them are probably ok cooks . I'll bet Glenn and Don and some of the other guys probably loved /love grilling at family get togethers.

Randy has made runzas for houseguests in recent years. The runza, also known as a cabbage burger, is a specialty of Nebraska passed down by Volga German immigrants to the region.

But I digress: keep on thinking of actors who could play Henley circa 1988. I think this would be *after* he cut off his long hair.

I've been trying to think of someone for Don if they do include him in this and it's been tricky as most of the actors I thought of fit 70s Don. If he really is in the movie I'm guessing this will be the first time that someone does play one of the Eagles.

Thanks for digging this up. I remember the connection but had forgotten the details, and it's always good to go back and refresh my memory... in fact, I'm actually not sure I've ever read this particular article before.

Some little bits I found interesting:

- In 1987, he invited "50 or 60 close friends" to an annual party at a ranch in Aspen. Wow, that's a lot of close friends! Do you think they all owned Aspen homes or flew in? Wonder if he still owns that ranch?

- Nice that he did his own cooking. I like the idea of him busy in the kitchen and the specifics of the menu (beef brisket, turkey, ham, potato salad and gumbo.)

- I love that Don clarifies he had gone out with Donna Rice "not more than four times." OK then! lol I'm glad he did, though, because you know otherwise everybody would have assumed she was his girlfriend!

- Gordon's. I'll check that restaurant out next time I'm in Aspen. I'm sure it's my kind of place if Don likes it!

- "She's a Southern girl, and she helped serve," said Henley, adding that Rice was one of several friends who pitched in to help at the party. "If that makes her a hostess, sure she was," he said. <--- Nice of him to say. :)

I realize I was taking it back totally off-topic - sorry! I can make a new thread if people want to keep talking about it - I just wanted to get a few comments in because it really was interesting.

I was looking at the photos of Don from that time period on Soda's Don Henley Online. It wouldn't be hard to find someone with that look - kind of an "L.A. Law" vibe (you are much too young to remember that show, Buffy).

No, we don't need no steenking new thread! :)

I'm jealous you've been to Aspen, Nancy. It seems lovely.

Harry Hamlin? Not Jimmy Smits. I was thinking Charlie Sheen but he is and looks a bit too old. However, finding a fortyish actor should be much easier than finding the twenty-somethings for the biopic.

They're all too old now. I wasn't thinking of a specific character from the show, but just the general look of a polished, urbane, late 80s person.

NMB, I have heard of "LA Law" but only because of "Seinfeld" referencing it and Corbin Bernsen being the son of one of my favorite soap actresses Jeanne Cooper from "The Young & the Restless" which I still watch. But that pic of Don actually reminds me of Toby Huss, who I watch currently on the 80s set "Halt and Catch Fire" where he plays a Texan and he did play Frank Sinatra recently on "Feud". Put a convincing wig on him and it might work.

Not on the topic of who should play the band in a biopic, but I think with the emergence of Netflix and Hulu, this would be a perfect time to see a 10 part series on the Eagles.
They have so much more time to tell the story than traditional movies. I thought Hulu did a great job with Stephen King's "11/22/63" book.
You could break it down to time
S1E1-how they got started, met each other, and ended up deciding to do it.
S1E2-E5-The 70's from Eagles-Long Run
S1E6-E7-The solo years
S1E8-E9-HFO and following
S1E10-HOTE, Glenn's death, and end with the band playing Classic West.

That's a good episode break down BB. :D I too agree that in this case, as well as The Beatles, it would work much better as a mini-series to get the whole story told. It could even be in the style of National Geographic's "Genius" which is an anthology series telling the story of a different person each year as season one was about Albert Einstein's whole life and season 2 will be Pablo Picasso. That too also had a younger actor play the title character from teens till 40s, and an older actor to play 50+. So you could get a different band each season.

I'm reviving this thread because of the buzz around A Star Is Born reminded me that I once said that Bradley Cooper could play Don Henley in a biopic. Now that he's in his forties, he looks less like Don Henley than he did when he was younger. I think I might have to take that one back.
