First I want to thank you all for the kind words and prayers. Then I want to share good news!!!! We went to the specialist Thursday for my little one....and they are NOT going to do surgery on her heart! They did another echocardiogram and feel the defect is not as bad as the original diagnosis indicated. The doctor is the top pediatric cardiologist in Memphis so I feel comfortable with her opinion. She actually did the echo herself and showed me why she felt surgery wasn't needed. Now life can get back to normal around here.....and she'll get to play the rest of the baseball games this season! Thank you all again for your prayers, they were definitely answered.

Holy Cow! I've been gone a long time. I hope everyone is doing well. It's going to take me forever to catch up on all the threads. (if i can even manage it) I have a really good excuse for being MIA tho. My new grandbaby has arrived!

RKN-thank heaven for your wonderful news!

FP-that's so funny re your daughter. You can tell her with all the decades I have on her, I've not "grown up" yet as I still call my dad "Daddy".lol

I had a wow moment about a year ago with my youngest. She's the only girl after 3 boys so she's really my baby. I have a harder time with the "milestones" with her than I did with the boys. Anyway, she was standing next to her male tumbling coach who was about 19 and she was a very grown up looking 14. I realized that the two of them standing there looked a bit like a couple and it freaked me out.lol I am so not ready for the dating thing. Even tho my 3 boys have gone thru it before. The hard part is knowing that I always dated guys older than me. LOL...I'll not say by how much in print cuz I don't want to give her any ammo should she stumble across this. But it sure makes me nervous for the next 3 years.

I'm on vacation this week and am doing things I can't get done otherwise. I painted our home office yesterday. Stripped wallpaper border off my son's bedroom walls today(it only took me 4 hours and it came off in 2 inch by 8 inch pieces) and am pretty well exhausted tonight. If I ever mention wallpapering again, someone kill me! I have another round of painting tomorrow and 2 wicker rocking chairs and a front door waiting in the wings for paint.

Why am I not going to an Eagles concert this week?

I know how you feel, TBF. MY husband took our 16-yr-old to get her license Tuesday after her last exam, and she passed. What a way to celebrate the end of her sophomore year! She came home, got in her car and drove away to pick up her friends, while hubby & I were hollaring instructions at her: " Be careful! Pay attention to the other drivers! Don't use your cell phone while diriving! Call us when you get there!"

We are a little luckier here in Indiana because once they get their license at 16, they can't drive with anyone unless they are over 18 for the first 3 months-Whew -so no friends in the car to distract at least.

Good luck to your daughter, TBF! I hope she does well. I only got my driver's licence on 11 May 2006 - at the age of 29! My mom unfortunately didn't get to see me pass out. I was supposed to do my driver's test on 4 March 2006, and then I developed cellulitis in my left thumb the day before the test, which left me unable to pull up a handbrake. The test was postponed to 11 May, and my mother passed away on 23 March. I know she was worried about me driving alone at night, coming home alone from band practices or gigs, but she supported me all the way. I know, had she still been with us, how she would have worried about me.

I sympathise with you who have new drivers. My younger son passed his test last year at 17, and every time he sets off I worry about him. My older son has been driving for three years now and we have added him temporarily to my car's insurance today. This coming weekend we are going to Silverstone where D will have a chance to drive a Ferrari, a present from the boys for Christmas. I have my camera ready!

I have to share another story. A parcel arrived for older son last week, so as per I posted it through his letter box in his student house. I picked him up today, and he handed the parcel back, saying it was for me, and maybe he'd had a little beer when he bought it. Bless him, he'd bought me "Let's Get Harry" on video!

And good luck to all of you who have to worry about your young drivers. My 18 year niece just isn't interested in getting her license - she is too scared. She has been slowly working up her courage, but I'm not sure when she'll be brave enough to actually go for it.

On the other hand, my other niece who just turned 16 a couple of weeks ago was in the DMV to get her learner's permit the very first day she was eligible. Look out for that one, Virginia! :)

Aw, thanks for the messages everyone. I'm blessed with two lovely sons.

Well, what a great weekend it's been. Today is a Bank Holiday, and outside we have gale force winds and rain, but it's warm and cosy inside and the three menfolk are resting upstairs.

We drove up to Northampton on Friday afternoon, in typical Bank Holiday weekend traffic - stop/start for 240 miles. :? We had rooms in a motel next to a pub where we had a great meal, then a leisurely morning with a picnic lunch in the grounds of a National Trust property. The weather forecast predicted heavy showers, but the sun was shining as we arrived at Silverstone race track. We found our way to the Silverstone Driving School along a perimeter road, then across a bridge over Hangar Straight (so I can say I've driven over Silverstone!)

Here are the boys admiring one of the Ferraris.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c96/Glenneaglesfan/Devon/IMG_2420.jpg

For Christmas, the boys had clubbed together to buy their Dad a Ferrari driving experience. First, he and the other drivers had a briefing, then a couple of practice laps with an instructor in a Lotus Exige (the one in the foreground).

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c96/Glenneaglesfan/Devon/IMG_2466.jpg

Having learnt how to handle the corners, he was allocated to one of the five Ferrari 360s, and had four laps in the driving seat. It looked pretty fast to us. He reckoned he reached 130mph on the last straight!

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c96/Glenneaglesfan/Devon/IMG_2477.jpg

And here are the boys celebrating after his drive.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c96/Glenneaglesfan/Devon/IMG_2482.jpg

Even this wasn't the end - he had a further lap being driven by one of the professionals at top speed for a final adrenaline rush! He was well and truly thrilled with his day - all well organised and safe. We did see one person spin off, but only at a slowish speed.

Yesterday was Mark's 18th birthday, "Coming of Age" over here. He hadn't really said what he wanted, so on the basis of D's present above, we got him a flying lesson at our local airfield. You should have seen his face! He had about twelve friends over in the evening for a barbecue and (legal!) beers. The weather held off for us and they had a great time. D & I left them to it for most of the evening and walked to our local pub, where by chance there was some great live music - Queen, Bowie, Beatles, Oasis etc (No Eagles, sadly!) This morning, we found that they had actually tidied up as well. Thank goodness the weather had held off until this morning. The wind was so strong first thing that it blew the gas BBQ and the cylinder over!

GEF that sounds so exciting! I am so glad that everyone had a great time and was safe.

Here in the states we have the "Richard Petty Driving Experience" which is similar to what your family did. It is done with stock cars instead of Ferraris. I want to surprise my hubby with that one day.....

Happy 18th birthday to Mark!

What wonderful gifts your family gives to one another, gef! That's certainly better than the "gift cards" that we've started giving to one another. We need to start putting more thought into our gifts!

samo, hubby and I are stock car fans, and my husband did the Richard Petty Driving Experience a few years ago. He took a few laps around Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC. He still talks about it!

Not as exciting as my Richard Petty experience, when I ran into "The King" while wearing my pajamas, but that's another story!

Well, I've just gotten back from a family vacation in Florida and had a terrific time. It was truly a family vacation because we were there for my cousin's wedding, so we got to see our extended family as well. My parents rented a large beach house for the week and me, my parents, my sisters, their husbands, and the little children were all under the same roof again. It was wild but fun! I also had a chance to get away from the kiddies sometimes by hanging out with my single cousins. Those girls know how to party! We had a blast. I'm sunburned from our time at the beach, but well-rested. It was so nice to be stress-free for a while.

It was an absolutely glorious wedding. My cousin is marrying a navy pilot who is from a Greek Orthodox family, and the wedding was highly ritualized. Very interesting to watch! My aunt and uncle pulled out all the stops for the reception. They rented a reception room in a gorgeous hotel in St. Augustine, had a sit-down dinner, an open bar, a live band... it was fabulous!

I also got to meet Frank Abagnale - he's the guy whose life the movie "Catch Me If You Can" is based on. My uncle works for the FBI (so does my aunt, for that matter) and he made friends with Frank while he was doing some consulting for them. He sat at the same table as my parents. An interesting guy to talk to!

Aw, nice to be missed! :)

DF - When I dropped by my parent's table to say hello, I was introduced to Frank and he talked about how he met my uncle many years ago when he was giving FBI training seminars on spotting fraud. My uncle attended his son's wedding, so he returned the favor. I asked him what it was like having a movie made about his life and if he was involved in it, and he said they let him play the policeman that did the arrest in France, so he got to arrest himself! lol!

However, I didn't spend a huge amount of time talking to Frank, as I was eager to get back out on the dance floor. I danced until they closed that place down! (No, I was NOT drunk! Seriously! I just love to dance! Ask PLS, Dreamer, and timfan, who got a load of me at one of the casino "clubs" at Niagara Falls). After my sisters left with their little ones, my cousins invited me to go to their beach house to continue the party when the reception room closed. My sisters were quite shocked when they discovered that "Nancy didn't come home last night!" lol I woke up with sore feet and aching muscles in my calves and thighs the next morning - dancing for hours in three inch heels will do that to you! Luckily one of my cousins is the same size as I am, and I was able to borrow her clothes and shoes (and a T-shirt to sleep in). There was no way I was putting on those high heels again.

But before anyone gets the wrong impression, I certainly don't party all night long regularly. My cousins are the wild ones. ;)

Soda, there's certainly nothing wrong with dancing all night. I like to dance too, although I don't often get the chance. Most of the time I'm the one who's doing the entertaining, watching others dance!

I can understand your immediately stating that you were not drunk - people seem to think that we all need a few drinks to enjoy ourselves. I was at my work's end-of-year function at the end of 2006, and I had only been working there for just less than a month. We were on a wine farm - very beautiful - and relaxing outside. I got bored from watching people being thrown into the swimming pool , and nobody to have a decent conversation with, so I decided I was going to get up and dance to the music playing. It wasn't my favourite music, but hey, it was something to do. I sang a little bit too, by I was playing the fool most of the time. I seem to cause much laughter among my colleagues, and the following Monday (the lunch happened on a Friday), I got wind that some of my colleagues thought I was drunk. Well, I don't drink at all, and that seemed to shock some of them.

GA, good luck to your hubby and his exams.

Soda, glad to hear you had such a great time at the wedding. A beach house sounds wonderful - no wonder you felt like partying!
Good luck to you and your dissertation as well.

MF, you are a model of self restraint - going to a wine farm and not drinking! It's great that you can unwind without a drink, girl!

MF-I know what you mean-I haven't drank for 13 years this July but yet I can still have a great time at any function and I don't have to worry about how I will feel the next morning! Sometimes it gets pretty annoying when you are around a bunch that has had a few to many tho!!

For a change I have happy news to share! My daughter got engaged yesterday! I'm so excited for her, he's a great guy and of course he's getting a GREAT girl! Unfortunately, I'll have to do the mother of the bride stuff long distance, she's in Texas and I'm in Tennessee, but thanks to the internet, we can still do a lot of planning and shopping together.

Knock 'em dead, Nancy! You know we're all pulling for you!

Congratulations, rckn! Good luck with the wedding planning.

My older son told me recently his girlfriend of 2 years has been dropping hints about them getting married. They're both so young!

RKN, Thats great news about your daughter. I hope you all have a great time planning. And its true, the net really does eat up the miles.

Molly, you exercise what 'restraint' you need to keep your son where you want him. He can't be much more than 20? Its very young to make such a committment and young families have such pressures on them nowadays. He has plenty of time.

I undersatnd entirely MF. My hubby doesn't drink either and says exactly the same as you about watching others who have obviously had too much to hold doing ridiculous things that they are ashamed of the next day. I drink a small amount, wine generally with a meal. but don't take too much!

I'm sure you were one of the stars of that show that you were at once you started to sing.

You know, it's funny. My cousins, younger sister and her husband went with me to a karaoke bar the last night in Florida. I immediately got up and put in a ticket to do "Stand Back" by Stevie Nicks. When I tried to get someone else to do the same, they all said variations of "I'm not drunk enough to do that yet!"

BTW, my Stand Back brought the house down. I actually got tips tucked in my top from two ladies! (I was wearing at tank top). My B-I-L wants me to move to Austin to join his band, lol - he plays guitar but has no singer. I told him you never know - I could get a job at the University of Texas! ;) I also did Heartache Tonight - and my sister joined me, finally, for Edge of Seventeen. Fun times!

Gosh, where do I start?

GEF, my dear, I didn't need to practice any restraint on the wine farm that day - I just don't have any interest in wine of any kind. Thanks for the support, though! It's probably strange to people, but I've had only one drink in my life: a champagne that was diluted with orange juice on my 28th birthday. I sipped on it the whole night until I finally forced the last drops down my throat! A party was given for me - it was dinner at a Mexican restaurant - and my friends insisted that I have at least one champagne. They never bothered to try and get me to drink again after that, LOL!

GA, thanks for your kind words, too, girl!

TBF, good for you! I know what you mean about being around drunk people. I just don't "get it". I'd rather remember what I did the previous night...

Mrs Henley, good luck with your exam results! I'm sure you'll do well.

Becky, congratulations on the engagement of your daughter! That is great news, especially after the difficult times you have been experiencing. May your daughter and her fiance look forward to a wonderful life together.

Molly, I had to laugh about your comment on the free milk and purchasing a cow! I hope your son's girlfriend will be content with waiting for a while before she expects commitment, since they are still so young.

Soda, I enjoyed your story about your karaoke evening! YOU GO GIRL! I'm sure you were great. I admit that I don't know the Stevie Nicks song, but I would have loved to have heard your rendition of "Heartache Tonight"! That's a song I'm still going to persuade our band to do, "if it takes all night!"

About 15 years ago I was at a karaoke in Killarney in Co Kerry. My friends wanted me to do 'Summer Nights' but none were prepared to do 'Danny' in it they all being girls. The DJ asked me to do it and I made the mistake of using 'I don't have anyone to do it with' as an excuse to try to weasel out of it. To cut a long story short, the DJ picked a guy ot of the crowd who was wearing a black leather jacket and asked him to 'help out'. The guy LOOKED the part but thats where it ended!! I am out-of-town again for a few days, this time to take care of my mother. She fell & broke her right elbow, and she had scheduled cataract surgery months earlier so she decided to go on with it this morning. Fortunately the surgery went well and she is recuperating, but she only has one good arm and one good eye so doing anything takes a loooooong time.
I hope I am as feisty & independent as she is when I am 82--but something tells me that I probably will be!

Molly, that sounds like a great gig to go to. I love listening to Classical/ Rock music and would love that. I wonder will they bring out a cd of the show.

DF I hope your mom makes a full recovery on both counts.

Well I had to take my son to the Eye and Ear Hospital today after his eyes puffed out completely and became nearly opaque shortly after lunch. They actually looked so inflamed that I thought they'd burst  . However after (a long wait! ) an eye examination and some drops the swelling went down and even though they are still a bit blood shot and weepy he's over the worst. It appeared to be a severe allergic reaction. Anyway on the way home the DJ announced that 'Mr Glenn Frey, one of my favourites..... :D :D :D ' would be on after the (7pm) News! And he was! :D

Molly
06-09-2008, 07:22 PM
Good luck with your mom, DF! She certainly does sound feisty! If I was in her condition, I'd be lying in bed making my family wait on me hand and foot.

GA, that sounds scary! I'm glad everything's improving with your son's eye. Do you know what the cause of the reaction was?

I "broke" the news of our symphony show to hubby the other evening. Only one eyeroll, so that's pretty good. Then he scolded me for not getting 4 tickets so his good friend "Eagles" Bruce and his wife could have gone with us. Ummm, it's our anniversary present, dear. What a romantic guy, huh?

DF, I'm so sorry your mom injured herself, and that she has to recuperate from eye surgery at the same time. She sounds like a strong lady, though, so I have every confidence that she'll pull through well.

GA, I'm glad your little one's eyes are okay. That must have been scary for you.

As some of you know, I've been going through a tough time, and have to try really hard to see the bright side of life. Thankfully, we had a gig last Saturday (7 June) - something to get me out of the flat and away from my thoughts. We were pretty much "background music" for a track cycling meeting, and it was quite a challenge as we had to play while the commentator/announcer was talking through our PA system. We were supposed to be playing for the people sitting in the so-called Beer Garden, but the only people sitting there were our keyboardist's "rent-a-crowd". The arena we played at, the Bellville Velodrome, is HUGE, and we would have to have the Eagles' equipment to adequately fill the venue with sound. The spectators were sitting on the stands watching the cycling - very far from us. There were very few of them to boot, since there weren't exactly many "elite" riders participating. We got one round of applause, at the end of our four-hour stint, when the announcer called for it.

What really annoyed us was that after we'd just about completed the setting up of our equipment, we were asked by the organisers to move the stage as it was positioned over the line where the cyclists were being timed, or something. Now why didn't they pitch up at the venue BEFORE we did, so that they could supervise? :? We had to re-do just about everything, which didn't leave much time for a decent soundcheck.

Oh well - all's well that ends well. I had no audience interaction, which was a downer for me, so I pretty much went through the motions. My bandmates, as well as the rent-a-crowd, told me, though, that my performance was flawless, which was particularly remarkable because of the talking going on while I was singing. My long-time friend and bandmate told me he has even more respect for me now. LOL! Well, that is lovely to hear. It made it all worthwhile.

I'm a little tired today, which is my own fault, since I just HAD to see a friend of mine, who also happened to play on a demo CD I made 10 years ago, and who I bumped into last month for the first time since I worked with him  , play at a restaurant last night. I had just come from a band meeting, so I decided to go to the restaurant, that regularly hosts live bands or solo artists, to see who was playing. I suspected that it would be my friend, and he was just AWESOME. He sings and plays guitar with backtracks - and he's hot too :smokin:. I had some friends, who had attended the band meeting, with me too, and they were very impressed. I got hugged and kissed too by my hot, rocking friend, so that kind of made my night! :D

Have you any suggestions for getting drops into a 4 year olds eyes when he keeps them tightly shut, covered with his hands and refuses to let you near them? Would it work when he's sleeping?

Any suggestions, anyone?

Sound like the way my husband behaves when I try to put drops in his eyes!

I threaten to smack hubby, but that isn't much help to you, GA.

Rewards is about all I can think of. Maybe a certificate or a ribbon from being brave.

Thanks for all the support, y'all. (I have always used "ya'll" but now every time I use it, I hear Don's voice in my head explaining "y'all" at the HRP show! ) I am back from taking care of my mom and she is much better. Her cataract surgery went very well and she now has 20/20 vision--better than mine! She has gotten really good at doing things with her left arm while her right arm heals, too. One funny note--she said she's not too happy with her eye surgery, because now she can see all the dirt in her house and all the wrinkles in her face!

DF, I'm glad your mom is doing so well! :D She sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks so much for the hug - here's one for you too:

Something nice and positive came out of the gig, though :D. A friend of one of my bandmates, who was a participant in the track cycling event at which we played, apparently thinks I am a "hottie" :D . My friend was very naughty. He's known for his match-making skills, so while we were on stage, he asked me what I thought of his cyclist friend, who I had met before the gig. I told him that I thought he was quite attractive, but didn't expect my friend to tell him I was interested!  Well, apparently he did just that, and it came out that the guy is married. It was nice to know what he thought, though! He also apparently thinks the band is very good and "entertaining", as he put it. I must say, that really made my day yesterday, when I found out! :D

Well MF, I'm glad that cyclist thought you were a 'Hottie' and that the band was very entertaining. Its nice to get compliments like that, particularly after the upheaval before the gig.
What a pity the best ones always seem to be married

TBF I hope the reunion goes really well. How many are you catering for, and what do you intend cooking?
I'm sure you'll have a great meal and a lovely time. Enjoy! And enjoy all the Eagles songs as you cook as well.

My son's eyes are improving. The drops no longer sting so he is a bit more amenable to getting them in tho' he still doesn't like it. The antibiotic still makes them 'blurry' but he only has another 2 days on them.
5 mins TV per drop is a good bribe :D Works for both of us!!

Thanks everyone and the reunion went off well, food was good, everyone got along (always a plus with that many) and the weather was 75 and sunny!! Only down side was my mom hadn't been feeling well all week last week so she couldn't come. We had been after her to call the doctor and Sunday tried to take her to the emergency room but she wouldn't budge. :argue: :enraged: We couldn't figure out why she was being so stubborn but she told us yesterday it was because she had had enough of hospitals this past year with dad and didn't want to go there! Well yesterday she ended up being admitted into the hospital and will be there for several days from what we are now being told since she waited so long. They aren't real sure what is causing it but figure it is a very bad virus and just got worse because she was so stubborn! I'm trying to be the understanding daughter but if she had only called the doctor at the start-we probably wouldn't be there now! It sure gets frustrating sometimes, doesn't it? Needless to say, time to pull out the ipod fully loaded with all things Eagles for the long drive back and forth every day while she is sick.

I have more bad news about my friend I mentioned awhile back who is a 3 time cancer survivor. I took her to the doctor about 2 weeks ago and she was diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the sinus. She is facing chemo, radiation and surgery after the tumor shrinks. She's very scared of course, especially since she has been through this before and knows what she's facing. Her tumor is a Stage II. She also has been diagnosed with MRSA, the so-called super staph. She is trying to pare down her numbers at her animal rescue shelter because she will be too debilitated to run it during her treatments so she is doubly depressed having to give up something that means so much to her. Please hold her in your thoughts ok?

I'm sorry about your friend, rckn. I'll keep her in my thoughts.

I actually have some good news. A co-worker of my husband's wife just had a new baby and they had been told about a month ago that there was bad news. The baby's head and limbs were much too large and there would be complications and possibly a handicapped child. As it turns out, the baby was evidently just going through a growth spurt and has delivered normal. You cannot imagine what these people were going through for a couple weeks. Thank heavens the doctors were wrong! I was shocked they told them that when they weren't sure!

And a report on my hairdresser's 4 year old. He is taking treatments and handling it well and their new baby is thriving.

Mrs Frey

TBF, DF and Becky: I'm sorry your mothers are not well, and that they're stubborn too. :( I went through that with my mother, and the worst part about it is that you feel so helpless, particularly when they do finally decide to consult a doctor or go to hospital, and the news is bad. I hope they will recover from their illnesses.

Becky, I'm so sorry about your friend. I really hope she will make it through this hurdle in her life. God knows, she's been through enough.

Brooke, I'm happy for your husband's co-worker and his wife that their new baby is healthy. They must have gone through tremendous stress. It was very irresponsible and unprofessional of the doctors to give the couple such bad news when they couldn't be sure. All's well that ends well, though.

I'm happy too for your hairdresser's 4-year-old. At least he's handling the treatments well - a BIG plus.

I too am terribly sorry to hear about your friend, Becky, and will pray for her. How horrible.

Brooke, thanks for the update and I'm glad for your friend!

As far as moms go, I guess that's just the way it is. I've been lucky in that my parents are healthy and strong. Although my mother had a minor heart attack in Saudia Arabia a few years ago, there have been no recurrences. They're no fans of hospitals either, though. Then again, who is?

TBF , DF and Becky, I'm sorry that your moms are'nt so well and know that you all do a great job looking after both the older and te younger generations. I'm lucky that both my parents are well although my father has slowed down alot in recent years. The problem is that he forgets that, starts horseplaying with my son, and then has to back out  . My husbands mother passed on 5 years ago after having cancer, but his dad is still quite well.

Becky I'm sorry your friend has to go through this cancer treatment again. I'll keep her in my prayers.

Brooke, I'm so glad your friends baby turned out to be fine. Its amazing how insensitive some people in the medical profession can be. A friend of mine having just lost her first baby was leaving the maternity hospital when the receptionist cheerily offered her 'her next ante natal appointment'. I had some minor complications while expecting my second child. When having a blood test I was asked 'What data WAS your baby due again?'. To which I responded rather icily 'I haven't lost it yet thankyou''. Looking back it was rather daring to sound so icy to someone about to stick a needle into one of my veins :nervous: but I'd just been through a rather scary day.

I'm delighted too that your hairdresser's son is doing so well and that their new baby is thriving. Funny! I was only wondering about them yesterday!

Thank you everyone for your kind words and prayers for my friend. She has been through so much with the cancer and other things, including having a son that committed suicide at 17 and I am at times at a loss for ways of helping her. I guess just being here for her to lean on and listen is all I can do. She is heartbroken over having to shut down her shelter but there is no way she can continue right now. Tomorrow she is going to an infectious disease doctor for the MRSA and will likely be admitted to the hospital for intravenous antibiotics.

On a happier note, that's wonderful news for your friends Brooke. I can totally understand what they went through. Before the birth of my first child, a doctor told me my baby had "multiple anomilies and is non-viable" which completely freaked me out. She was born about a week later, premature but on the whole, normal. At 3 months she had viral pneumonia and nearly died, causing a small amount of brain damage but she has thrived and overcome the problems for the most part. So many young girls having babies never think of the things that can happen to their child and it makes me just cringe when I see a pregnant teen. I'm so happy for your friends and congratulate them on their new baby for me.

Thanks for the update on your hairdresser's little one also. I'll continue to keep them in my prayers.

TBF, I hope your mother comes out of hospital soon. DF and Rckn, my mother is also a worry, so I know how you feel. She has continual aches and pains, but won't go to her doctor.

Rckn, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I do hope she can fight this latest battle and overcome the MRSA as well. It's so sad that she is having to give up her animals. I hope she can find new homes for them all.

That's a harrowing story about your daughter's prognosis before she was born, but great that it was wrong and that she has overcome her problems with such bravery.

Brooke, I'm pleased to hear about the safe arrival of your friend's baby. I guess the medics would rather predict bad news and get it wrong, than the other way round. Good news about your hairdresser's little son too.

Now we've just had some bad news. Our good friend and neighbour went in to hospital to have a knee replacement, and dring the op the surgeon thought the joint looked a bit odd and sent a specimen for biopsy. Shortly after he came home, he developed widespread nodules in the skin and it's been diagnosed as a rare solid form of leukaemia. He's in for three weeks chemotherapy, so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Despite all this worry, his wife is still going to feed our cat while we're away.

I've finally got something to write about. It's been confirmed that my 30 year High School Reunion will be on August 30 in Newcastle.

In 1998 at the 20 year reunion I was pregnant. I suppose in the spirit of the thing I've decided to post a photo of me during the event. You can't see much. The hand belongs to one of my friends. The point is I haven't changed much from this photo. My hair is about the same length. My glasses are different.

So I get to trudge up to dear old Newcastle again. The funny thing is that the function is being held in my old suburb, Merewether.

We lived right on the top of the hill. I spent a lot of time at the swimming baths:

I had a nice little event earlier today, (or yesterday as it is now I suppose). My most listened to radio station has a 'Who Am I' competition every day at about 1:15pm. Its where you are given clues and have to try to guess the artist/band. Of course I keep waiting to hear 'I was born on November 6th 1948..... ' but it hasn't happened yet. However today was just as good when the start was 'We are a band formed in 1971......' I won't bore you all with the rest of the clues but suffice to say I was on the phone like a hot shot. Of course it WAS the Eagles. The DJ had me live on air for about 5 mins and I had a great chat about them afterwards with him. I'm in a draw on Friday for a meal for 2 in some nice Thai restaurant. Funny thing, I don't really care about the prize. It was more the thrill of getting the answer so quickly and being able to chat on air about my favourite band.

Sorry for visiting such and old post of mine but GUESS WHAT!! It Finally happened today!!! And I nearly missed it as I put on the radio later than normal having been out. The DJ was just finishing the first list of clues and all I heard was the phrase 'solo career in 1982' That got me thinking!! Yes, the next few clues confirmed it to be Glenn  so I HAD to phone in the answer. When he answered the phone he actually said, 'As soon as I gave out those clues I knew you'd be on' Some memory, eh?
Anyway I had a chat with him on the radio about Glenn  and the Eagles and once again am in the draw for the restaurant voucher  . But once again I don't really care! It was better getting my 5 minutes of Glenn  fame!!

I was just so excited to know the answer and be the call that got through! Too bad it was about Brett Michaels and Poison and not about Glenn or any of the other Eagles! Anyway, it was fun!

Brooke, that's great for you that you won that lovely prize. :D In the olden days , when there were still some decent radio programmes playing decent music, I often used to phone in and chat to DJs who played some of my favourite music. I also participated in competitions and even won a prize on three occasions - Elvis Presley and Beatles music. :D I managed to get myself on air on two occasions too, requesting music to be played, which was the coolest thing ever! 8)

Great going GA and Brooke!

We finally got Mom home from the hospital yesterday after 11 days. Says she will never wait again to call the doctor. They are convinced it was "the bad tomatoes" that started the whole thing. Now she needs to get stronger because 2 weeks from tomorrow my brother and sister in law were planning to take her back to Quincy IL to see all the family still down there since she hasn't been there since way before Dad got sick 6 years ago and she has really been looking forward to it. Now that she is home, I'm sure she'll rest better and get stronger day by day. It sure wiped her out for awhile.

I'm glad your mom is doing better now, TBF!

Our oldest daughter, Bamagirl, has gone to spend the rest of her summer two hours away where her grandmother lives. She decided she wanted to work somewhere different during her summers off from college, and knowing how much her grandmother would appreciate her company, she got a job at the Target Photography Studio (Dreamer knows how much she loves to take pictures) right down the road from my mother's house. My mom is thrilled to have her there, and although I miss her here, of course, I am so pleased that she decided to be with her grandmother, to keep her company and help take care of her. I'm so proud of her.

Now, if we can only talk our youngest daughter into getting a job! She applied several places and when they didn't hire her, she just stopped looking. Once she turned 16 and got her car last month, all we do lately is fill her car up with gas---and the expense is killing us! $$$ She is taking Junior History in summer school to get ahead, so I have to give her gas money to get her back & forth to school, but that is it!

I'm also very glad your mom is improving, TBF.

And DF, that is great that 'Bama Girl wants to spend her summer looking after her grandmother. I think this will be a summer that she will cherish forever. And you are right about her summer job - seems to me working in the photograpy department is a pretty good "fit" for her. Tell her hello from her Virginia buddies.

And good luck to your other daughter on finding a job.

I know what you mean. My son seems to think a great job will find him. He is working and paying his way, but with his education, I would like for him to get out there and find something better. He's not putting any effort into it at all. :headscratch:

DF, that is indeed great for your older daughter. Of course you are proud of her.

As for your younger daughter, I'm sure she'll find something soon. It can be difficult and demoralising trying to find that first job and often its the first time a young person has to experience and deal with real rejection. I remember it well in the mid eighties when the recession over here was at its highest. To get a job you needed experience and to get experience you needed a job. . I hope she'll have good news from an employer soon.

Brooke its great that your son is able to work and pay his way. Its great to see someone so responsible! Although I know what you mean about his education. But I'm sure he'll suddenly see something that he really wants and will go for it like a hot shot :machinegun: . God help the competition.!

Easy!! You need to know someone  After months of pavement pounding a friends brother got me into the supermarket he was working in where I spent the whole summer packing bags!! They broke every rule in the book but it was a job, and more important a reference which led to better things! Also pocket money.

But no! Seriously, it IS very hard to get that first job and sometimes just means being in the right place at the right time. I hope your daughter finds something she enjoys soon DF. I feel for any teenager or young person trying to get a job now--they are slim with the economy the way it is right now. I am thankful that my 17 (18 the 31st) year old son who will be a senior this year has had a steady job of one sort or the other for several years now. He is working at McDonald's right now and is in the low end of management but hey it puts gas in his vehicle-and that is quite an accomplishment right now! My 15 year old daughter might be a different story when the time comes-Yikes! She thinks a wonderful job will magically drop in her lap any time now!

Good luck to both of your teenagers, TBF. I sure am glad I'm not looking for a job right now, although I was in that precarious position for two months in 2006, after having worked at a company for 4 months, and it went into liquidation. This is after having a left a job where I worked (miserably) for 8 and a half years. It was a scary time for me, but thank God I landed the job that I am currently in, and I am very grateful for it.

I know what you mean--when I was in school, the only kids who went to summer school were the kids who failed a class. Things are very different now. Christina and her friends are not particularly good students--they don't like to put forth the effort to study--so they discovered one way to get an easy A or B is to take a difficult class during the summer, when the curriculum is easier.

And everyone is so right about how hard it is to get that first job--to get ANY job, actually. It is a tough job market for everyone now.

Congratulations on your retirement Billy. I'm sure you'll find something to do with yourself...maybe following the Eagles around on their tour! LOL

I have an 18 yr old that is just entering the job market so I know how difficult it is to find something too. We live in a very small town with little employment and lot's of competition, so it's going to take some hard work and pavement pounding to find something.

We had quite a scare last night. My Mom had a really bad fall. Her medical alert company called me about 11:30 saying she had activated her alarm and they couldn't reach her. I rushed out to my van to go to her house and wouldn't you know it, I had a flat tire! Luckily I have great neighbors and was able to get there to find her in the floor between her bed and dresser. Her pants were down around her ankles so I think she must have been trying to put her PJ's on, but she doesn't remember what happened or how she even got into her bedroom. I waited for the paramedics to get there before moving her. Fortunately nothing was broken but she has a spectacular black eye, lots of abrasions and massive bruises. She lives alone and has a lot of black outs so it was pretty scary. I really need to be there on a full time basis and we are in the process of buying a double wide to put on some property I'm buying, so we will be moving in together soon. It will be quite interesting seeing how that will work out, we have very different life styles, but at least she won't be alone anymore.

Becky, that's scary about your mother, but I'm glad she didn't sustain a serious injury. Probably a third of admissions to the unit I work in have had falls and injuries, usually hip fractures. Your mother is certainly lucky to have a caring daughter like you who is prepared to modify her life to provide extra care, It's something I've had to mull over since my mum was ill last year, and for us there's no easy solution.

Billy, good luck with retirement. A friend in our village has just retired from the police, and is already overwhelmed with requests for gardening jobs. On the subject of job hunting, I have two sons looking for summer employment. We are looking around, but no luck so far.

As you may realise, we are back from our holiday, which was wonderful. Croatia is beautiful, the weather was hot and sunny and the view from the villa stunning. I'll post some pics in the 'Every picture' thread. I came back to work to find I have to vacate my office in a week's time - they have found a space for my desk, but I'm not best pleased about the disruption.

Hey rcknalwys,
Just another reminder of how life revolves around,It's hard sometimes, really hard.
That's why i believe we have to make the most of the good times.
I deal with sadness and tragedy every day,(for other people),but I get consolation from knowing that people, are really grateful that you are there to help them in their time of need.
It's sad when bad things happen to us, but we can use that experience to help others when sadness come to them.

Enjoy the good times

Great to hear from you again Holly! Whats PLAN? Face painting sounds fun. I love watching face painters at kids parties. Hope you're well. :D
Thanks everyone. Plan is a place to help people who have suffered from mental illness deal with life. I had suffered from depression for many years. I'm trying to get of my anti-depressants now. I was diagnosed with depression after an incident that happened between me and my grandpa when I was 10 and I was also getting picked on in school and didn't know how to deal with it. Things were okay from 6th through 8th grade but when I got to high school things got really bad. I was getting constantly picked on, teased, sexually harrassed, made fun of etc. every day. None of the teachers or my parents would listen to me much less help me so I attempted suicide 3 times my sophomore year and was going to attempt suicide another time when I got placed in a mental hospital and was put on this medicine and gained a lot of weight which really made the kids more cruel to me. I would ignore these people but that didn't help and I felt like what's the point in living if I have to deal with this. I went to the Arboretum with PLAN today. They have lots of activities and should be able to maybe help me find a job. I hope they can help me deal with some issues I have like trusting other people and stuff.

Oh my gosh, SH, I'm SO sorry for the heartache and desperation you've experienced in your life, my dear. How I just want to give you a big hug. Like Maleah, I know what it's like to feel like an outsider, although the teasing and verbal abuse I experienced was not as extreme as yours. It's awful that you felt you had no one to turn to in your time of need. I hope that PLAN is able to help stabilise your life and calm you so that you can move forward and find work. Good luck! I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that we are here for you. Never give up!
Thank you so much. You don't know how much your post means to me and all the support I've gotten here from every one. I really appreciate it.
I haven't been back to PLAN in a few months because my grandma's been sick and I've been helping to take care of her. She's had an infection for several months and it keeps coming back and so she's in a nursing home and not doing well. She could die soon. I don't want to lose her but I know that's part of life.
I went to a Frisco Roughriders game last night. It was a lot of fun.
I'm gonna try to check in here more often.
Gotta go get my album artowrk for my iPod now. I'm on my dad's laptop.

Sweet Holly, it's nice to hear from you again. Hang in there, life is so hard but you've had the strength to make it this far, that makes you a winner in my book. I experienced a lot of the same things you did and tried suicide also, but I can tell you that despite all the heartache, life is still worth living. Please lean on everyone here when things get hard. I'm sure we will ALL keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Thank you all for your kind words and support, it isn't easy taking care of your parents. I'm the sandwich generation, have my Mom, my own kids and a granddaughter to care for. Taking care of myself is always on the back burner. I have diabetes and have been on intensive insulin therapy for about 2 years and started putting off taking care of myself for about 4 months. My blood sugar stayed pretty good thankfully, probably because I was getting residual effects from the insulin I had been on. I'm back on it now and already feeling better. Now to start the walking.

Billy, what a bitter-sweet retirement for you in two years' time. I don't know whether I should be happy or sad for you! All I can say is that I hope you will be able to make the most of your free time when it comes around, and find that retirement suits you after all.

Becky, I'm so sorry about your mother's fall! :( I'm glad she wasn't seriously injured, but I can imagine how traumatic it was for you. It's wonderful of you to be adjusting your life to take care of your mother. You are very caring - God bless you. I hope your health improves too - I had an aunt with diabetes, who we lost in 1999. She tried her best to live with it, but she finally succumbed to it. It was very sad. I hope that you are able to overcome everything this condition throws at you. I know how tough it is, though!

GEF, welcome back, girlfriend! :D I'm glad you had such an amazing holiday. I look forward to seeing the photos.

We have admitted Mom once again into the hospital and she sure has a long road ahead of her. It is an infection on the spine and today should know exactly what they are battling. Well to everyone generating the new topics recently I hope soon to be able to post a bit more. I've been correcting a mountain (330 to be exact) of exam scripts but just have a few days left. Then its all over :yay: . Its worth it though, as I can do it from home.

On a positive note, Hubby got his exam results today and has done better than he ever expected. He passed everything at the P1( high pass) rate and got a distinction in one paper. For someone who had just hoped to keep his head above water he is delighted.

(Would this be a good time to tell him about the Glenn  Frey t-shirts which arrived in the past yesterday????)

I have not been around much lately....

this is because a few months ago our landlord told us he wanted us out of the apartment as he wanted to live in the apartment himself ( which in Canada is the only way a landlord can evict someone without cause) Well we were kinda worried but my bro decided to purchase a house instead of renting so.....

My dad brother and I are moving!! ( I will now be renting from my brother) The house that was purchased is awesome!! but the people living there now wanted a fast closing so just a month after purchasing the place we will be moving in at the end of the month!

This has meant my life is rather chaotic right now... for a few days i actually considered not going to all the Toronto Eagles shows!! as the closing is on the 25th!

TF, what upheavel for you and your family, but I suppose we all have to buy sometime. At least your brother will now benefit from your rent instead of an outsider. Good luck with the move and also the gigs. I've missed you!

TF, good luck with the move. That's great news about the house. you'll have to show us some pics. And don't miss those concerts!!

GA, congratulations to your hubby, and to you for getting through that marking! Enjoy the t-shirts!

TBF, I'll be thinking of your mom and hope they can get on top of that infection.

Rckn, sorry to hear about your diabetes, but it sounds like you are in good hands. Look after your self.

SH, welcome back, we've missed you!

What an ordeal to have to move, timfan, but it sounds like your family will be OK once they move into the house. I'm glad you've decided to still go to the concerts.

Or perhaps you should just put on the tank top and hope he's too busy admiring your looks to notice the writing!

As Soda suggested, put on the Frey tank top! I'm sure hubby would be distracted for reasons other than what it declares!

OK, so, I wore the Black t-shirt with THIO at the Big Trout Tavern, Glenn Frey 14 June 2008 and the big orange flames above it. I WAS nervous but thought 'What the heck, Laura's seen it so there's no point in keeping it a secret'. Anyway he must have been in quite a while when he looked at the (small) BTT logo on the front. At that stage I just said 'Its the back you need to see!'

After what seemed like ages he just mock groaned and said
'You're like a walking billboard these days'

Oh well, it could have been a lot worse!!
He hasn't seen the tank top yet  . When he does I guess he'll want to know what 'Frey-ed' means, and how does one get 'Frey-ed' :heybaby:

GA, that's too funny! Your husband is very tolerant. I don't even wear my Eagles t-shirts in front of mine, let alone my Glenn ones (of which I have several, including an 'Allnighter' one!) They are worn when he is away or underneath something else.

Jethro the cat was in a fight earlier this week and developed an abscess on his head. He had it cleaned up, under sedation, at the vet's yesterday. When he came home he was high as a kite on the sedative, huge pupils, purring like mad and everywhere at once. It was very funny!

Well, I'll admit GEF, I was very nervous. He's happy enough with the Eagles ones and I also got a Neil Diamond one on 14 June! If he HAD objected to Glenn  I'd have asked why he hadn't to ND! I can imagine what he'd have said as well!

I hope Jethro's injury isn't too bad and that he is back to normal. poor thing. Give him a hug for me!

GA, you do have an understanding guy. I have a great number of Eagles/Henley t-shirts, but I usually wear them when hubby is out of town. And I hope Jethro is feeling better now. I hate it when my cat, Muffin, is sick.

I have had an interesting Sunday so far. It started out good: the title of today's sermon was "The Heart of the Matter." (Needless to say, my mind definitely wandered after hearing that.)

Then my day went downhill fast: I sing in the choir and our regular choir director is on vacation. The substitute director forgot to lock the door to the choir room, so during the sermon, someone walked in the choir room and took all the money out of all of our purses. I normally keep about $20 in my purse but I just got a check cashed for $100 to get gas in my car, and every bit of it is gone. What kind of person robs a church during church services? :enraged:

Now that is about as low as you can get, DF! How awful! Evidently the culprit hasn't heard/read the Ten Commandments!

I've spent a lazy day today reading a novel. It's called The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher and is set in England. One of the characters has mentioned going to Henley. That sparked my interest! :D

It's really funny, Henley in England! I know it's also a river..the Henley Thames lol.

My Sunday is almost over :(

Oh and what did I do today..let me think..
Nothing at all! Except enjoying of Don Henley, haha.
No serious, I went reading a book (finally!).
Don't know if you know the book "Remembering Sarah".

Well DF I just have the one Eagles T-shirt and the fleece that I bought in London in March. Hubby has no problem with me wearing them although I think he thinks I overdo it! I don't think I have the guts to wear the 'Frey-d' ones in front of him! It'll be bad enough if he sees my wallpaper on the laptop! Its Soda's magnificent one from Minnesota!

On a more serious note DF that was a terrible thing to happen to you earlier. But for it to happen while you were in church was adding insult to injury. I hope none of your friends lost a serious amount of money over this incident. It was really low.

I was just paying for a few groceries yesterday when the young cashier commented on my (Eagles) t-shirt and asked me about it. Turned out she is a BIG Eagles fan and has a pic of herself listening to them on a walkman when she was only a few months old. I showed her a few pics that I had on my phone from London. She was amazed that they sang in their suits. We had a great chat for about 20 minutes after which I had to head off, but as I've promised her a read of my RS article and a few more goodies no doubt we'll hear more from her.

Ive always been a dreamer

DF - I'm so sorry about the robbery incident at church - it is unbelievable that you can hardly trust anyone anymore, isn't it? What also caught my attention in your post is that you have to carry around $100 to get gas these days. Remember the old saying 'Desperate people do desperate thing during desperate times.'

GEF, hope Jethro is doing better and GA, those Eagles fans are everywhere, aren't they? :D

I know! I go to a small church of around 100 regular attendees in a nice residential area, and we all know each other like family and never expected this to happen. Dreamer is right--we are entering desperate times. As one of my fellow choir members said, "Someone must have needed that money a lot more than we did."

Hope you are feeling better now, Soda.

Funny, DF, I had actually written on my post 'The only consolation is that that person must've needed the money more than you people' and then took it off as I didn't want to sound patronising! But its true!

I'm feeling better - thanks! Luckily, most of the weekend went well for me. It was only Sunday that I had a bad day because I was feeling so sick, but it seems to have passed.

Gosh, I've missed a lot. I'm not going to be able to visit as much for a while, as I've been very busy. I worked a half day at work yesterday, and will do until Wednesday. I played a gig on Sunday evening, last night, and will do again tonight and tomorrow night. When it's all over, I'll explain everything, but for now, I'm running on autopilot, as I'm VERY tired. I want my bed.

Very quickly: Soda, I'm sorry you were sick, and I'm glad you're on the mend. I'm glad also that you were able to celebrate your graduation and that you enjoyed yourself. You deserve to after all that hard work. I was quite ill about two weeks ago, with a very bad head cold, and I wouldn't be surprised if the bug is still in my body, as I really haven't been myself since. :( I've also been under an enormous amount of stress, so that couldn't have helped. It's probably the reason why I got sick in the first place.

GEF, I'm sorry poor Jethro was ill, but glad that he's better now. The poor thing. :(

DF, I'm so sorry that you and your fellow church choir members were robbed. It's disgraceful! The world has become so awful that honestly, nothing surprises me anymore, sadly.

GA, I hope your hubby gets better soon.
