Congratulations to Kayla and you, Lissa, that is a fantastic achievement!

The good news is that my mum is coming home today. I spoke to her specialist yesterday, and we had a long and helpful discussion about options; whether to proceed to angiography or optimise the medical treatment, which would involve going on Warfarin to reduce the risk of a stroke. Mum was very keen to avoid any invasive intervention and has been desperate to get home since admission, so we have opted for the Warfarin. She had a standard memory assessment yesterday and scored 24/30 - her intellect is intact but her short term memory very patchy, and she has been somewhat stubborn and disinhibited on the ward, but I'm sure that she will be more like her usual self once back home. At least we are all aware of the problem now, although Mum strenuously denies it, having always been a very proud person. Anyway, I'm going to take my dad over this afternoon to collect her. Fortunately their next door neighbours are wonderful, so Dad will have their support through what are likely to be some tough times ahead.

Molly, I'm sorry to hear that your mom had similar problems, but I'm sure you and Lissa are right and that getting the meds right will help.

To end on a lighter note, when I went to fetch my dad yesterday I was listening to Solo Collection in the car, and when Dad got in I switched to the radio and The Heat Is On was playing!

Kate, I am very glad your mom is coming home to familiar surroundings, and that you have your dad and nearby neighbors to help out. Sounds like things are heading in the right direction.

As an update, my mom still hasn't regained all of her balance since her vertigo attack that hospitalized her back in early February. She got a little better when we brought her home, but she still can't walk a straight line without losing her balance. The Drs say they have never seen an attack as severe and long-lasting as hers. Before all this happened, she was very proud of her independence, like your mom. Now, she has been virtually house-bound since then, since driving is completely out and even riding in the car contributes to her dizziness. Fortunately she took out an INS policy for home health care and a nurse comes a couple of hours each day to help her, since my dad is gone and my sister & I live 2-3 hours away. The battery of pills she has to take each day, for vertigo, heart condition, high blood pressure, etc is astounding.

GEF, Glad to hear things are improving with your mum. I'd also take it as an extremely good omen that you couldn't get Glenn off your car stereo. :) Hope things continue to go well for you all.

I got a letter yesterday to say I've been exempted the dreaded Jury service. Thanks to you all for the advice. In the end I did use the 'care of 2 small children with hubby working irregular hours' defence so it seems to have done the job.

I got a copy of Q magazine yesterday as they had a feature entitled 'The 100 Greatest Singers and their 1000 Greatest Songs' ie 10 songs per singer. However while there were some very laudable entries both male and female, and one couldn't argue with the top choices, I was a bit disappointed to see that the only Eagle to feature was Don, and he came in at number 85. For the record his 10 key songs were

On the Border (with Eagles)
Best of My Love (with Eagles)
One of These Nights (With Eagles)
Hotel California (With Eagles)
Life in the Fast Lane (With Eagles)
The Sad Cafe (with Eagles)
Leather and Lace (With Stevie Nicks)
The Boys of Summer
The End of the Innocence
New York Minute.

Soda, Stevie herself checked in at a paltry 97. Again an injustice IMHO but at least she made it :)

I just fail to see how someone with a musical history of over 35 years such as Glenn's and a fantastic voice to boot does not make it into the top 100  (even if I am totally biased and would put him in at no 1). Some of those mentioned are not as long on the music scene and IMO would not have contributed as much (even from an objective point of view). But thats just how I feel!

Dana, I hope your mother gets well again soon. It's unusual for vertigo to last that long and she must be feeling rotten.

Thanks again for all your kind thoughts about my mum. I'm pleased to say she is now home and is certainly more lucid and calm today, and no further chest pains. I went through all the meds with my dad. He is on a few himself, so he is used to taking them and I think they'll manage between them for now. I'll be visiting them much more often now. It takes a crisis like this to make you realise how much you take for granted.

Ack GA, you're right, that is just wrong! I am pleased to see that Leather and Lace made it for Don, though. His vocals on that are terrific - very romantic! I like sensitive men who aren't ashamed to cry. ;) OLf course, Stevie is the one who wrote that line, lol. I'm glad to hear she made it too - even if so low. She is often overlooked.

Kate - glad to hear your news about your mom feeling better. :)

GA, thanks for posting that list of singers. Interesting that they included The Sad Cafe on Don's list--that song doesn't usually get a mention.

And I'm glad you got out of jury duty. I have been called twice over the years and both times I cited my young children as the reason I could not serve. As a matter of fact, the last time I was called was two years ago, the week before the Eagles concert in March, and I was afraid I would get sequestered and have to give up $250 seats and miss seeing the guys! Fortunately, I was excused. Now that my children are teenagers and one about to leave for college this fall, I have a feeling the next time I am called, I will be stuck!

I'm so sorry for everyone that is going through the medical problems with their parents. Hopefully, they will all get better and things will be easier.

I've been through the heart attack and diabetes thing with my mother (75 in a few days) a few years ago and it makes for a very trying time for everyone. She is doing fine now, but takes lots of meds and will for the rest of her life.

My Dad (81) is healthy as a horse so far, thank goodness. I have to relay a little story about him! He is a veteran and goes to the VA doctors in a town a couple hours away for his checkups. He has a small hernia and has been trying to have it repaired for 4 months now. He has made 5 trips to the doctor for various tests to have the minor procedure done. They decided they didn't like his EKG and he should come back for more tests a couple weeks later. When he went in all they did was listen to his heart with a stethescope and test his reflexes! The last trip was to be for the actual operation (an outpatient thing). He got there and they did the same thing. Finally, he is to have the operation for sure next week. He says they can't believe there isn't more wrong with an 81 year old man! I told him I think they should report this to Dateline or some news program with the recent news reports about that other VA hospital where the vets were receiving such poor care! :x I think that even this government funded hospital is trying to dupe the government for even more!

Maybe I should give 'em all As now. ;)

Soda! What a frightening thing to happen, hopefully you're ok now. Have plenty of rest and look after yourself over the weekend. I had a student collapse in front of me once a few years ago, turned out she had a migraine headache but hadn't eaten anything or told anyone. It was frightening from a teachers perspective because you want to make sure you do the best you can for the student, while calming the others. Your students sound older. I think they deserve those A's. And again, take it easy

One more thing about the "incident" - I found out some more details from my students today and they really were wonderful and handled everything very well (althouh apparently one student ran through the halls screaming "HELP!") One student called 911, one made sure I didn't hit anything, one watched out for the EMTs... young adults indeed.

Sometimes college teachers (myself included - despite the fact that I'm really not THAT much older) get into the habit of thinking of all college-aged students as "kids." I guess I learned a lesson myself that day! Today, when I talked to a couple of female students, I called them "ladies" ("Here are your graded resumes, ladies.") They seemed a bit surprised, lol. I always used to call them "girls."

When it comes down to it, I actually lucked out having it there, if I had to have it that morning. It's certainly preferable to having it outside! And I was kind of touched by how concerned they all were. I brought them chocolate today as a thank-you, lol. So my students rock. :)

You're a very lucky, Soda. Your students deserve to get tons of chocolate! :D

I don't post very often in this thread because I'm already glad to catch up reading all other posts here. But I got great news today:

The husband of my US aunt were waiting for a new kidney for almost 2 years. They had 2 kidneys for him in the past but they didn't match perfectly so they decided against a transplantation. So he had to go to the dialysis three times a week which made him very sick. This is why I gave up my plan to come to the US this year to see the Eagles. But this sorted itself out.

A week ago a lady came into the hospital and said: I want to donate one of my kidney. Just so. The doctors made all the necessary tests quickly and found out that kidney would match to 100 %. :D
So he got the surgery on Thuesday and the kidney is working just great! :D :D You can imagine we are all so happy about this. :D

He can write to her and after one year he can meet her if she wants to. God bless her! :D

This has been quite the week for me... :?

First I had the oppurtunity to go to an all expense paid hotel here in the same city for a few days.. so I took a mini vacation filled with swimming, hottubs, saunas, food and generally rest and relaxation!

Then on Thursday, you might say everything came crashing down... I was having a great time when I got word that at my workplace (a phsychatric facilty) there had been a major problem!

Thursday morning about 5:45 am a fire broke on the 3rd (top) floor of the residence. Needless to say the 3rd floor of the house has been damaged badly with one room being totally destroyed. Thank heaven all the residents were able to get out safely! I went in to work today to see if i could help out. It was a chaotic day with many people now residing at different homes and the legnth of time for repair unknown.

So that is the adventursome few days of TF!

I woke up yesterday and found that I had chipped off a bit of tooth (ugh - my worst nightmare!) Luckily they managed to fit me in at the dentist, and it only needed a filling so it's all sorted now, but I'm £95 worse off! (Perhaps I can win it back on the Grand National today!)

Sorry for having to play "catch up' here, but it has been a very busy and stressful week for me and I haven't been able to spend a lot of time on the board.

And Kath - I'm so glad to hear no one was injured in the fire, but boy - what a scare that must have been.

We've had some unbelievably sad news. We've been excitedly anticpating the arrival of the first grandchild of some very very close friends of ours. Mike and Joan's daughter, Sara, was due to have her baby any day now.

Sara hadn't felt the baby move for the last day or so, and today it was confirmed that the baby has died. To say that everyone is distraught would be putting it mildly.

We just gave Sara a baby shower 2 weeks ago, and Joan was enjoying the role of proud Grandma so much. Mike, the baby's grandpa-to-be just lost his Dad unexpectedly at Thanksgiving, so this baby is something they have really been focusing on.

I just feel sick about this. This one is going to be tough. :(

I have been gone on a little mini-spring break trip to the beach with my oldest daughter for the last four days, so I am trying to get caught up on everyone's posts. Even though it was a little chillier at the beach than we would've liked, we still had a great time, wading in the waves picking up shells, and eating some great seafood.

Anyway....
TF, it always seems like whenever you get away for a day or two, something bad happens. I am glad everyone was okay.

Molly, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend's baby. I had three miscarriages myself, but mine were all early, in the first trimester, so I can only imagine how heartbroken they are to have gone full-term and then lost the baby. I did go on to have two healthy daughters (with a lot of help from fertility treatments and bed rest) so hopefully, in time, your friends will have a successful pregnancy. My aunt sent me an email yesterday with an update how it goes with her husband and his new kidney. He was having life-threatening problems with his heart rate and blood pressure so they thought he won't survive that.
What she wrote to me sounds really awful.

Yesterday was a set back. On the ccu unit which they transferred him too, they started an heparin drip because of blood pressure and heart rate were so high, but on the other hand he started to bleed by his incision and formed a grest big hematoma, he was in such pain he could not stand it, and also looked like he was knocking on heavens door. They took him back to surgery and his insides were full of blood so they cleaned all that out and now he is better, the kidney is still working great. He spent the night on the ventilater what a f***g nightmare he said it was.´Today he looks like a different person. He will be out of ICU and will go back to the transplant floor. If he does well in the next couple of days he might come home sat. I sure hope so, I am tired myself,my eyes looked like a basset hounds eyes.

Michaela, sorry to hear he's having these setbacks. All that blood in his abdominal cavity must have been very painful. I guess you have to try to look on the positive side of things and be thankful that it sounds like his doctors are right on top of these complications and he's receiving very good care. It sounds encouraging that he's out of the ICU so quickly. He must be a fighter and that's also a positive thing.

Try to stay positive for your aunt and give her lots of emotional support. It's must be exhausting to deal with this stress day after day.

I'll keep them in my thoughts and prayers. Hang in there.

Wish your uncle the best from us all, Michaela. That sounds dreadful to have bled into the abdomen on top of everything else, but as Molly says he must be a fighter to have got through so far, and it sounds as if he is in very good hands.

I really have a bad feeling now. :?

Oh my, EF, I hope you get good news.

Here's a nice story from a real klutz!

I fell down a few stairs a couple months ago and hurt my shoulder. When I got up and knew my arm wasn't broken (thank God) I thought "it would be ok". Well the nagging pain had not gotten any better so I finally went to the doctor a couple weeks ago. (It nearly takes an act of Congress for me to go to the doctor!) He gave me an anti inflammatory and said we would try that. No help. So he sent me for an MRI Wednesday and now has referred me to a specialist. I'll probably need surgery! I guess I have bone spurs and tendonitis in the rotater cuff. I see the specialist May 9th. Bummer. Grace was never a middle name for me!

Molly
04-20-2007, 02:11 PM
Grace isn't my middle name, either Brooke, so I can identify! Hopefully, following the surgery you'll feel soooo much better. How nice of the band to delay this tour until you're good as new!

Michaela, don't give up! Keep your spirits up so you can help your aunt keep hers up. Hang in there.

Michaela, I hope your bad feeling turns out to be incorrect. I continue to pray for your uncle.

Brooke - I had something similar happen! I hurt my shoulder in a fall during a seizure. I endured the pain and limited mobility for months, thinking it would go away. I finally went to the doctor - it was indeed the rotator cuff - but after a month of physical therapy, all was well again. I hope yours is solved that easily!

Hang in there Brooke! Hopefully you won't need surgery. My dad did his shoulder an injury when he fell over 20 years ago. He did some physio but it didn't work, he was offered more physio, surgery or...nothing :) . He chose nothing! and was told he'd eventually have about 80% movement. The shoulder recovered by itself and he now has full use of it. So hopefully yours will do the same.

You know those Nielsen TV ratings (http://www.nielsenmedia.com/nc/portal/site/Public/) diaries that they send you to fill out to determine ratings for TV shows? I just got one for the THIRD time!

What's really weird is that the two times I got them before - well - I kind of didn't get around to filling them out. In fact I didn't get around to opening the envelopes with the diaries in them (in my defense, one of them was July when I was prepping for my Glenn tour, and the other one... I just kind of forgot about that one. )

So, for the THIRD time, I get these diaries. I did with this envelope what I did with all the others - threw it in one of the various piles of mail I have cluttering my apartment (I live like a pig). I got a call from Nielsen today - "Remember to fill out your diary!" Oh, yeah! I start digging through the piles. Here's one Nielsen envelope - I open it - it's an old one. But with the diaries falls out $15! Wha?!! I dig out the other old one - $15! Woot! I excitedly open my latest one, the one I'm supposed to start this week - $30 falls out of this one!
:jawdrop:
First, I felt guilty that I had blown off the previous ones after I'd been "paid." Then, I wondered if I blew off this one too, perhaps they'd send me $45 next time. ;)

Nah, I'm filling them out this time. But what a cool surprise!

My oldest daughter, Rachel, who graduates in two weeks, had her final choir concert last night. She has had the same choir teacher for 6 years and has sung with many of these kids since 7th grade.
She had a duet with one of her best friends on a song called "For Good," from the musical "Wicked," and it goes like this:

"It may be that we will never meet again in this lifetime
So let me say before we part-
So much of me is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me like a handprint on my heart
And now, whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine by being my friend.
Because I knew you--I have been changed for good."

Now, y'all probably know that I am a sentimental sap--the first time I heard Don sing "Annabel" about his daughter, I teared up-- so you can imagine how I reacted to this. I cried like a baby. <sigh>

Momma's so happy! :partytime:

Wonderful news, Lissa! I have a baby coming home tomorrow as well, tho not nearly as exciting as coming home from the service! That's a big deal!

Peter has a year of college under his belt and he'll be home from Marquette tomorrow. No more empty nest for a few months!

Also, on top of all the other craziness around here-my family got wonderful news earlier this week. My sister, Donna has been in the hospital for the past week or so. We were told based on early tests and her symptoms that she probably had esophageal cancer. It sounded very grim-she was even advised to sign a "living will" immediately in case she didn't survive the surgery she needed to fully diagnosis her condition. She had her surgery late last week and everything has come back negative-no cancer! We (and her doctors) are amazed!

Even though I'm around this all the time, I don't really understand the misdiagnosis nor what it is she actually does have. It's a cystic growth and it's benign. It has pockets of infection in it-and that's what was making her so sick. She's not out of the woods yet-but she's fighting hard, and making progress. She's really feeling like she's been given a second chance on life. And I am so relieved and thankful!

Molly, that is a huge relief for your sister and all of your family, and I hope that they can now get on with treatment.

My sister is having a second MRI scan today. She has had back pain for months, and so far investigations have been normal but despite physio, acupuncture, chiropractice, painkillers; nothing has helped the pain. She had a scan last month and the spine looked ok but she has been told there were a couple of 'lesions' on the ribs, so the repat is to check these out. She is very philosophical about it. Her husband has been through treatment for cancer and is quite well at the moment, but we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Dana, you must have been so proud of your daughter, congratulations to her and her friend!

Molly

Kate, I'll keep your sister in my thoughts. I wish for her the same "miracle" that my sister was given. My sister got very philosophical about the whole thing as well. . I would have expected her to be terrified and maybe even feel hopeless -but that wasn't the case at all. She's stronger than I gave her credit!

Wow........this is all overwhelming for me and all I'm doing is reading it!

So I'll just consolidate my thoughts ;)

The homecomings are great news! I can't imagine not seeing a member of my family for more than a month. That's why I'm too chicken to move to TN like I've been thinking about  And I especially can't imagine having someone in the service and all the worry that would go along with it!

Dana..........I got a little teary just reading the words.......I can't imagine if I'd have acually heard it!

GEF....I'll keep your sister in my prayers!

GEF, I'll keep your sister in my prayers. Hopefully its not something serious.
Girls all these homecomings are brilliant...I dread the thought of mine ever leaving and they're still only small,
And Dana I would definitely have needed the tissues as well. I'm a sentimental sap also...and proud of it. :D

We're back at last from our holiday, all of which went well. I won't bore you with the details but just a few things:

There was a young lad staying at the hotel the image...and I mean IMAGE of Deacon. Everytime I saw him I looked involuntarily for Glenn  It wasn't Deacon needless to say but I sure had fun looking :D

My dearly beloved son knocked my new digital camera out of my hand on Sunday evening. The lens mechanism is broken. I had to use disposables for the rest of the week and for me that was hell :( . When I brought the camera back to Dublin I was told it would cost €100 just to get a repair estimate (non-refundable even if you get the repair done) and it would cost as much as the camera was worth to actually repair it :!: And cameras is the only thing my holiday insurance doesen't cover.

On the way home I was sitting beside my son on the plane sharing the ipod with him (Glenn  of course). I had an earphone in my right ear while he had one in his left ear. On landing I had a fierce pain in my left ear which is only going now.....but no problems on the right :D . I've always said Glenn  has a great effect on me :D. With the kids we decided to sit 2 and 2 on the plane. Usually thats a recipe for disaster but boy you guys should have seen the guy who was put beside me .....Woah.... :D (Good but not a patch on Glenn  of course)

Other than that, and missing Glenn  heartbreakingly a great time was had by all. I'll try and download one or 2 pics when we get the photos developed and put on disc :D

GA, welcome back from your trip, and it sounds very cool - apart from your camera. :( I had my old Nikon repaired and it cost about the same as buying a new one which was much higher spec! Hope your earache is better now.

All of you, thank you for your thoughts and prayers for my sister. She should hear from her specialist this week, and then should have a better idea of what is happening. We are due to meet up next weekend.

After a week of rainy weather we managed to grab a break between showers for a walk on the cliffs near St Ives in Cornwall yesterday.

Nothing very exciting going on this week with me...
However, I worked last night and I heard a familiar voice coming over the store's canned music---Glenn singing Sea Cruise. They have that song and The Heat Is On in rotation at work.
Now if only they would add a Don song to the mix--Not Enough Love in the World would be a good choice--I would be really happy.

Aw, DF, I know how you feel. I don't have a radio here at work, but I have my video and audio downloads from GFO on my laptop which I play during tea breaks and lunchtimes. Waiting until I get home to play my new Glenn  and Eagles albums is a bit tough , so at least my laptop music keeps the withdrawal at bay. I have to be careful not to play it too loudly, though!

I had band practice last night, and I submitted "Heartache Tonight" as a possible song to add to our repertoire. I belted out the song, unrehearsed, for the guys last week already, but we'll have to see if they warm to it... :?

I must tell you, DF, Don looks so sexy in your signature banner, I can't help but stare at it! :smitten: (sorry, Sugar  )

DF, your store's canned music must be quite cool to have Sea Cruise on!

The station they listen to at work nearly always plays The Boys of Summer on a Friday lunchtime - today no exception. As it's a half day for me I go home in a great mood for the weekend!

MrsF, I take my iPod in to work, and if it's just boring paperwork to catch up with, I find it very helpful!

Dreamer, that photograph is from the north Cornwall coast, about an hour and a half from home. It's probably my favourite area of Cornwall - almost down to Land's End and very unspoilt.

I know its not Eagles related, but for those politically minded we have a general election here in Ireland tomorrow. The same Government has been in power for the last 10 years and last time out the main opposition was decimated. They've launched a revival campaign this time so it should be interesting to see what happens.....

No elections for us this year, but Tony Blair has announced he is standing down as Prime Minister, and Gordon Brown appears to be uncontested to replace him. During Blair's time as Labour leader the divide between the very wealthy and the poor has become greater than ever, and the middle ranks like us find there are more and more 'stealth taxes' eroding into our incomes. Our children are now among the most underprivileged in Europe, under age drinking is rife, there are more gun and knife killings, the government has completely lost track of how many migrant workers have entered the country, stressing already stretched resources, and now they have lost three terrorist suspects who merely had to report to a police station once a week. New Labour, new Britain?

I'm leaving LA today for San Francisco, but before I go, I want to relate some of my Eagles-related adventures here.

The first night I was here, my cousin and her partner took me around Mulholland and showed me the famous Beverly Hills hotel. They were laughing as I exclaimed "cool! cool!" at everything, lol.

The next day, my cousin's friend took me to the Sunset Grill. Now, I know Don says it's bad, but he may not be aware of two things 1) The old one was torn down by the new management because it VIOLATED HEALTH CODES! My cousin's friend verified this - "I wasn't surprised. I wondered if they ever cleaned off the grill, it looked so nasty." It had nothing to do with making it "more commercial" - unless you consider meeting the health code making a place more comercial. It's true that it doesn't look the same. It doesn't have that atmosphere anymore that Don liked so much; in that sense, I understand why he doesn't want to go there now. But I don't understand Don getting outraged about a change in decor and exhorting OTHER people not to go there. 2) The former owner, the one Don respects so much - "the old man there from the old world" - he likes the new place and occasionally eats there. If he's not offended, why is Don? If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me. What's really funny is that when I tried to explain this to my cousin's friend, her response was "F*ck Don Henley. They make good shakes here." Sometimes we forget that not everyone cares about the Eagles. lol

Yesterday, I went with the owner of RockPhiles.com (http://www.rockphiles.com/), "mewsical," to see many of the old sights from those days (she used to hang out with Glenn and the gang in the early 70s, pre-fame). She showed me all the places in Laurel Canyon, Coldwater Canyon, etc. where folks used to live.

Then, we went to see the Troubadour. We got there at 4:30 pm, and the place wasn't open, so we peered in through the windows. As we were doing so, a nice lady who worked there asked us what we were doing, and when we told her I was from out of town and wanted to see the Troubadour, she let us in! Mewsical showed me where Glenn and Don liked to sit and all that. It was MUCH smaller than I expected it to be. I went into the back and saw the stage as well, but mewsical said that it was nothing like the old backroom. Unfortunately, the lady wouldn't let me take photos inside, but she took a photo of me and mewsical outside of it.

After that, we headed next door to Dan Tana's. Mewsical said this was the place where they would hang out more often. There is even a piece of railroad on the wall donated by Don and Glenn to the restaurant - there used to be a train that went down Sunset Boulevard and when it was rolled away, they grabbed a piece for sentimental value. That's what inspired the line from The Sad Cafe about "the tracks that ran down the boulevard."

We meant to go in and have a couple drinks; we wound up staying for four hours. The food is EXCELLENT, if pricey. We just hung out and chatted with all the people who came up to the bar. Mewsical said it reminded her of old times - although a lot has changed, some things remain the same.

Now it's time for me to catch my plane and head on out of here, but I really enjoyed my visit to LA!

Other than three cosmos, lol, I had a cheese dish with marinara - yum!

I just had the last part of my adventures today - not Eagles-related, but still memorable!

I spent the last two days in San Francisco. Since my friend in nearby Vallejo had to work, I took the ferry over yesterday and fended for myself - but hey, I travel alone all the time. No sweat!

Yesterday, I walked Market Street, then up to Haight/Ashbury. Now, for a girl who isn't in the best shape, that was quite a task! I had no idea how far up the hill that place is! But I really got to experience it. After walking through Buena Vista Park, I went around the H/A neighborhood and visited the little shops. I nabbed a coat from a vintage clothing shop - only $12 - and went into the Red Victorian "Peace Cafe" (http://www.redvic.com/). It's a famous place from "back in the day" that used to be a hang out. As some of you know, my mother went to high school with Janis Joplin and I wanted to check the place out. As I said there looking over the peace posters, who should come up but the owner! She's very elderly, but we got into a conversation about how important it is to "better the world," so to speak, and I stayed there for an hour. It's things like that you don't get from the bus tours.

That evening, I wandered into an open-mike bar and guess who volunteered to do "Landslide"? ;)

Today, I decided it would be better for my poor feet if I used public transit instead of trying to walk everywhere. I took the bus out to the Golden Gate Bridge and walked across it - got some great photos! Alcatraz was booked (guys, if you ever go here, make a reservation!) but I took the streetcar to Fisherman's Wharf and walked to the docks and the Cannery. (The streetcar line was long, and there was a guy playing guitar and singing next to the line with a cup for "tips." I tossed in a dollar and asked if he knew any Eagles. He stumbled through the opening of Hotel California but didn't know the words except for the first lines of the chorus. Oh well, he tried!)

After walking to the Civic Center, Chinatown, and that big Transamerica tower, I hit the Wells Fargo museum. What should I see but a section dedicated to Black Bart, whose Wanted poster I modeled this wallpaper (http://www.glennfreyonline.com/images/WPWantedAliveB.jpg) after. (I only changed a few words here and there - and the photo, of course!) I grabbed a pamphlet about him in its honor, lol.

The only problem: when I came back to the Ferry Building to catch the ferry back to Vallejo, turns out I missed it! I thought it was leaving at 7:30, but it was 7:05. Now my friend's husband is having to drive into San Francisco to pick me up. A rather inglorious ending, but otherwise, I had a great time!

Thank you for sharing another report, Nancy, how fantastic that must have been.

Boy, I LOVE San Francisco, much more than LA or most other US cities.

The houses in Haight Ashbury all look so wonderful with their different colors and that Victorian style everywhere (the Red Vic is only the most famous place). And you are right, the little shops are a blast.

Didn’t you go to Pier 39 at all? From a previous post I saw you have a kitty. When I was there the last time they had a little shop there called “Kitty City” where you could buy everything for and about cats :D I almost felt sad to not have one myself.

And somewhere around there I had some clam chowder whenever I was there – OK, it’s not Tana’s but yummy anyway :D

Nancy, reading the account of your trip brought back many fond menories for me of two summers ago, when hubby & I went to CAL to see the Eagles in Salinas. It was my first time to CAL so I was very excited. We spent the first three days of our trip in San Fran doing many of the same things you did.

Funny note: he is nine years older than me so he served in Viet Nam and had actually been to Haight/Ashbury when he was shipping out, so walking those streets had fond memories for him, too. As I was taking his pic on the street under the Haight/Ashbury sign, an ambulance pulled up to the red light, and an old "hippie" standing there watching us said, "Dude, that is just where an ambulance picked me up in the 60s!"

We cracked up!

Sounds like you had a great trip Soda! I'd love to visit California and do everything you did. Never been there. :(

I watched a documentary a few months ago about Haight-Ashbury. That was quite a different time! All about peace and love!

EF, hope you like your new kitchen. You must post a pic of it soon! Remodeling is exhausting work, even if you are just watching!

I had a fast 1800 mile road trip in 4 days! We left on Thursday evening. Drove till 1:30 am, then drove all day Friday and got to Austin about 5:30 pm. That was a bit exhausting, but it was good to see our daughter and her new place. We went out to eat and she showed us where she works at a commercial editing company downtown. I've decided she was a hippie in another life and has come back as one! She enjoys everything vintage! Clothes, furniture, you name it! I've decided that "vintage" means "junk". As far as furniture anyway! We shopped several vintage stores in Austin Saturday afternoon. She was quite happy with a coffee table that I would have thrown away! Oh well, to each his own. As long as she's happy! She had us stay at the Four Seasons which was absolutely awesome! Her company gets a discount which we were allowed. It was beautiful! She bar-be-cued for us that night and we had a good time visiting and meeting some of her friends.

On Sunday, we drove all day through rain storms to get to our son's place in south Missouri. We took him and his girlfriend out to dinner and visited a bit and he showed us his college campus and where he is working part time. Then we headed home Monday morning. I think I'll have to diet this week, cause it seemed all we did was eat! It was a short/long trip, but was fun. :D

SG - I missed Pier 39. I was trying to avoid the temptation of shopping centers!

I briefly drove around Sacramento with dreamer, Z, and Perfect Little Sister when I went to the show here back in 2005 but we really didn't see much. DonFan- lol about H/A!

Brooke - the four seasons, huh? Nice! Glad you had a fun time.

SH - That's cool that your granddad worked at Alcatraz. I saw in another thread that you know which Starbucks Don goes to. Do you know what he orders? I like a grande white mocha with no whip cream myself. When I need to stay up grading papers I make it a venti quad expresso white mocha. ;)

EF - a seven hour assembly - dang! I'm impressed!

EF - a seven hour assembly - dang! I'm impressed!

Yes, and they worked fast. But they needed to assemble evey single kitchen cabinet, sawed the countertop, dealed wit the electrical connections, installed things like stove, cooker hood, dish washer etc.
And most of the time there was only one guy who did all this. The other guy seemed not to be in the mood for working and left for almost 4 hours.

Hurray - good news from my sister! She had a repeat MRI scan on her back and got the result yesterday - she has a rare but benign cyst on her rib which has been compressing a nerve causing back pain. It's taken 18 months to pinpoint the cause, but now they are going to inject the cyst and that should clear up the problem.

I will be absent for a few days. I have had a roller-coaster week that included oldest daughter's graduation from high school--lots of family here, I didn't even cry--and packing her up for her summer job as a camp counselor at a nearby Girl Scout camp--then taking our youngest daughter to get her learner's permit for driving--look out drivers! Now we are going to Atlanta tomorrow to see the Tony Bennett concert Saturday and then Stevie Nicks on Monday.

I will post all about the concerts when I return!

Hubby and older son have set off this week to walk from the south coast to the north coast of Devon - a recognised long distance trail that they did north to south last year. I drove up to meet them this evening, to replenish socks etc, and take them for a much deserved pub supper. They are averaging 20 miles a day, and carrying camping equipment, so it's quite an achievement. I'm ashamed I can't take that sort of pace, but at least I'm good for back-up! Couldn't help smiling on the way home when I saw a sign to 'Fingle Glen - Golf Hotel'!

The weather in Sydney is rainy & cold, but this is my home town of Newcastle overnight.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200706/s1946783.htm

The photo is of Kotara, a suburb near where I used to live & where my parents & I used to shop at the mall. And I have just read that 100 people were evacuted from Merewether, my old suburb! Presumably not from my street, which was at the peak of a hill. But further reading has revealed that Glebe Rd, at the bottom of our hill, was flooded!

And this is King St, one of the main streets in the city, at 1 a.m.

http://www.abc.net.au/newcastle/stories/driving_up_m1400393.jpg

The poor city never recovered from the earthquake of 1989. When I went to a school reunion last year it was still like a bomb had hit it. It was never the most lively place (to put it mildly) but now this....

The first photo should have been with the article. A lot of people insisted on driving in Newcastle & were in fact marooned as you put it. A family of five was killed when part of the Sydney to Newcastle highway collapsed & literally swept them away, & an elderly couple were killed in the Hunter Valley north of Newcastle. Here in Sydney there has been a lot of wild weather, but not as bad as up there. Winter finally came, to answer Brooke.

I'm pretty down today. I found out that a guy I used to work with last year killed himself yesterday. He was only in his early to mid twenties, with two little girls. He was such a fun guy to work with and I would have never guessed that he would be suicidal. I tend to take things like this pretty hard because.....to think that if only he might have one one more person in his life to listen....to care........maybe he would have thought twice? I found out today that his father also killed himself when he was young. So sad

Maleah, please accept my sincere condolences on the death of your friend. It must be awful for his family to have to go through this situation again. I often wonder why people feel so desperate or alone that they feel they have to do this. Its often a cry for help. Why can the help needed not be identified and be put in place 24-7 if necessary in some cases. We have had two separate suicide cases in Ireland recently both involving children and one parent in one case, both in the other. It is just so sad.

I am so sorry Maleah. As I said a while ago, I had a suicide in my family some years ago and I still bear the scars. Maybe one day I'll tell the story or part of it.

Thanks for the comments about the floods. I said to my mother that I hoped my uncle was OK because he still lives up in the Hunter Valley. He rang last night - his town had torrential rain but no flooding. He said he saw our old family home, or at least my grandfather's home, in Maitland, on TV (still OK). It turns out that Newcastle and the valley had similar floods in 1955, four years before I was born.

I don't know why this has affected me so much because I couldn't wait to leave Newcastle when I finished school. I hated the place. But with the steelworks closing, then the earthquake, now the floods, it seems to take a lot of hard knocks.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Maleah. Suicide is a very difficult thing to comprehend. My brother chose to end his life 5 years ago.
I still alternate between being heartbroken and really pissed. Steve had a lot of people who cared about him and wanted to help him. He also was a young man (41), he was very creative and talented and he, too, had two small children.

I can't imagine how dark the world must have seemed to him those last few days thinking we would all be better off without him I'm sure I'll never really understand. I do choose to believe that God has allowed him to now have the peace he sought and never found on Earth. That's how I deal with it.

Maleah, I'm very sorry to hear about your friend, and also to all of you who have had similar tragedies in your own families. It is desperately sad when people feel they are so worthless they must take their own lives, without being aware of the aftermath and grief to their friends and families.

I have had my ups and downs in my life, but when I read that people have had to live through the suicide of their loved ones, my problems pale into insignificance. I'm so sorry about your friend, Maleah, and to SH, Brooke and Molly too, my empathy goes out to you all for the part that suicide has played in your lives. :( :( :( :(

I lost the closest person in my life, my mother, to cancer last year, and it's hard enough when one's loved one is taken away by an illness, nevermind suicide. I am taking life one day at a time (as Joe Walsh would say), but at the moment it's not getting any easier.

It does help to be able to share an interest with my like-minded Eagles fan friends on this Board, so thank you to all of you for making life more enjoyable. I just wish my mother was around so that I could have shared this with her. :(

EF, welcome back! :D I'm glad your move went well - I'm just sorry that it took its toll on your blood pressure and your back. :( Take it easy (as Glenn  would say! - sorry, DF, I couldn't resist! ), and hopefully everything else will fall into place for you!

FP, I'm sorry to read about the tragedies that have occurred in Australia as a result of the floods. I've been complaining over the last week because of the daily rain we've had here in Cape Town (and I couldn't get any washing done! ), but it's a triviality compared to what your fellow Australians have gone through. Cape Town weather has certainly become more severe than it has been, with summers being particularly and unpleasantly hot, and winters being icy cold (for Capetonians, anyway).

Mrs. F, I lost my father to cancer three years ago this August, so I understand how you feel. We were (and still are) a very close family, and the sense of loss was just overwhelming. I would give anything to hear his sweet voice again and to get another one of his big bear hugs. I am fortunate to still have my mother, but her health has been steadily declining since Dad passed away--they were married over 50 years and she is quite lost without him.

I also turned to music to help soothe my grief, and re-discovering the Eagles and meeting all the wonderful people on this board has been the best therapy in the world. The only thing you can do is take it one day at a time. It WILL get better, I promise. The first year I cried at everything, every birthday, every family occasion without him; then the second year the grief got a little better; and it has lessened even more this year. Now I can remember all the good times and focus on all the years we had together and smile.

SH-I agree w/Kate. Posting that took a lot of courage. I think talking about it helps a great deal. And reaching out to other people who may be going through a tough time themselves, is an amazing way to heal yourself!

Mrs. F -Dana is right- 1 year isn't a long time at all -truly, truly, as time goes by you will feel better. Oh, you'll always miss your Mom-but eventually the happy memories will replace the sad feelings. Hang in there!

Someone told me once, that telling a story or sharing a memory about a loved one lost is the best way to keep them "alive" and a part of your life. I find that now I can tell funny stories about my brother when we were kids and laugh at the things he used to say and do. It feels good- and that's the brother I prefer to keep with me.

Thanks. It really does help talking about it. There were several times when I was really low (I mean really depressed) and I though that suicide was the answer to the problem when it really was a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I have been in therapy and going to a psychiatrist for many years now and I am doing a lot better and I'm currently working with my psychiatrist on being taken of my anti-depressants.

SH, I agree. It took great courage for you to talk about that.

Regarding losing loved ones, I lost my father to cancer nearly 20 years ago (this December). It was very difficult. He was only 54. I blocked a lot of my own grief out because my mother's grief was so overwhelming. I think a lot of what I liked in my husband reminded me of him.

I may as well get my suicide story out of the way as if Molly could have the courage to talk about her brother, I can talk about my uncle. My uncle was at his brother's bedside when he died (my mother & I were not - it was at 6 in the morning) and I don't think he ever really got over it. Eventually he believed that he may have had prostate cancer and rather than go through what Dad went through, he killed himself. My mother was the last person he rang before he went out. As always, she wonders what she was supposed to have done. The sad thing is that I don't think my uncle did have prostate cancer at all, but he was prone to mood swings.

Reading about this has been really sobering and, as has been said, puts other problems into perspective. I feel for all of you who have experienced deaths in the family, be it from a disease or the heartbreaking choice of suicide. I have been very fortunate that all of my immediate family is alive. The closest experience I have ever had with suicide was when my friend's father took his own life on the very night I was visiting her - July 4, 2005. (We were going to go to Summerfest in Milwaukee the next day). Seeing her suffering at that moment when her mother came into the room and told her about her father really brought home to me the consequences of that act on loved ones, and it has discouraged me from entertaining those thoughts. SH, I too am happy that you've worked through it. You are indeed a strong person.

FP, that's really tragical with your uncle.

I also lost beloved ones like my grandma and grandpa. But I think that's the normal run of things even if both didn't reach a high age.
Whereas suicide is almost the worst.

1 1/2 years ago I lost my brother. He was addicted to drugs and as a result (we guess he used a contaminated needle) he died of AIDS. I already told this on the boards. It was terrible seeing him reduced to a skeleton and with a respiratory mask on his face, a horrible scene. :(
