You're lucky Molly that he is so tolerant. I get around the 'hubby' issue a different way. He simply doesn't know of the existence of the Board. Luckily he is out quite a bit and works nights so it is possible for me to get some quality 'Glenn  time' at least some of the time. But I have had a few very near misses, and have to make sure to completely clear my internet browsing history everytime I finish, even on my own computer. And thanks to a very good friend, when I can't make it to the board she keeps me in touch through email on my blackberry. Only downside is that I can't give people my address to send on Eagles and Glenn  material, as I just can't risk opening the whole can of worms that would follow an interception!

Poor girls, who are married. Like Soda said everyone should have his own thing to do. No one could keep me away from doing things which I like to do.

Today I went to the doctor again. The wound is healing well and I made clear I want to go back to work on Monday. Being at home every day that's what makes me more sick  But she agreed and said ok. :D

Great news EF, and getting back to work will help life get back to normal again. But take it easy, don't go full tilt until you get totally well.

I don't have a hubby in the house to deal with, been separated for years now, but he still likes to give me a bad time about the Eagles. He's always saying they are has beens. I know he does it just to get me going, and I think he's a little jeolous of Timothy  lol. But I do have friends who think I'm obsessed and since I'm always checking out the board, they give me a hard time. They do however love the pic of Timothy I have on my desktop. It's the one from the deluxe edition. At least they have good taste in hot men :smitten: !

Thats very good news EF. I'm delighted you feel ready to go back to work. I hope you get on well there.

My 6-yr old is the only person who slags me off over The Eagles! But then I slag her back, knowing her penchant for Timothy! She has an idea I like Glenn  but I keep the 'specifics' away from her.

I'll have to log off soon! Hubby due home

No Becky, I won't do that. :)

My friends are very tolerant even if they don't get why I spend time talking to people on message boards who I never met in person. I replied it's quite possible to know these people better over time. We all have our own style so sometimes I don't need to look to the left to see who has written a specific posting.

BTW, maybe I come over to the USA next year... I played the lottery today and I plan to hit the jackpot with 26 million Euros.

I'll keep this brief.

I'm pretty happy after last night's election coverage. This could be only the second time in Australian history a sitting Prime Minister has lost his own seat.

By the way it's Rudd. Kevin Rudd.

  :headbang:

Well FP Congratulations to the Australian Labour Party who I belive have regained power after the recent election. That is the result you wanted isn't it! :D I wish the incoming Prime Minister Kevin Rudd the best as he starts out!

Oh I see you've just poated on this while I was writing it.

I hope everyone had a good holiday weekend. We had a great visit with my mother, brother, and sister, and we all ate WAY too much turkey! We also visited with my college roommate & her family. She lives in Kansas now so we usually only see each other once a year during the holidays. We watched the big football games together Saturday night at a huge football party at her sister’s house and both our teams, Kansas and Alabama, lost. Oh well, better luck next year.

She also told me they had gone to see Garth Brooks at a series of special concerts in Kansas and their tickets were just $35 apiece!! Garth made the venue sell ALL the tickets for that price, and he sent out press releases telling everyone not to buy tickets from scalpers or secondary markets, that he wanted to keep tickets affordable for everyone. He is kind of an amazing guy. Can you imagine the Eagles doing that? Guess its safe to say that Irving Azoff isn't Garth's manager.

Wow, I've had such a busy holiday weekend, I've missed a lot here.

I'm so glad my husband doesn't mind my Eagles infatuation. I hope you all that have s.o. problems can get them worked out. Hubby thinks it's funny that I know so much about them, but realizes that it is just a hobby and all in good fun. And, I think he knows that if Glenn or Don happen to knock on my door and ask me to leave with them that I'm probably going!

Friday afternoon my friend from Florida (whom I visited in September) and her hubby and sister came for a brief visit. It was great to see them again.

It seems like I've done nothing but cook and eat all weekend. Today I had my friend/sister-in-law and her family for her birthday dinner. Also, mother-in-law, another sil and her family. Totalling 14! She turned the big 5-0, but I was nice since she had been nice for mine last year!

Now I'm exhausted and ready to chill and watch 60 Minutes! :D

DF, that is cool about the Garth tickets. I saw him back in the 90's when he was first getting popular at a small county fair about 40 miles from here and got to shake his hand at the stage! (He kissed some of the girls, but my son was with me so I didn't go for that!)

Btw DF, we were on the other side of that Missouri/Kansas game last night and were very happy with the end result!

And EF, glad you are getting back to work! Take it easy! :D

I didn't know whether to address the 'husband' issue or not but I will.

My problem is not so much with him objecting to me visiting the board. It's more about his opinion of the music. He constantly whines about the Eagles being 'massed guitars in 3/4 time' because the music he likes is more sophisticated, etc etc. There really isn't any answer to this, any more than there is an answer to the argument that Neil Peart (Rush) is the world's best drummer and Don Henley could not play Neil Peart's parts. I honestly don't think even Henley would argue with that but I don't see the point in raising the issue every time. There isn't much that we agree on musically, given that he also doesn't like the Beatles, Rolling Stones or Bob Dylan. I can sometimes get him to agree about Dire Straits & Neil Young. So the problem is more about musical differences.

I just wonder how many of these husbands would appreciate it if their wives tried to dictate to them what sites they can visit.

Brooke
11-25-2007, 07:40 PM
I am lucky in the way that my husband is also an Eagles fan. He just doesn't get the physical attraction!

And we pretty much like the same music. He really likes some of Don and Glenn's solo songs, too, (mostly their rockers) but there are a lot of them he doesn't like. Interestingly he loves Heart of the Matter. He just thinks Don (and JD) were soooo clever with the lyrics and a couple of the lines seemed to touch him personally.

As far as internet surfing, my husband doesn't do much of it. He's one of those "good ol' boys" Don likes to talk about! The weather and hunting suppliers are his hang outs. He doesn't care where I surf and I don't care about his. (As long as it's not porn!)

No, Mike doesn't care what sites I visit either and vice versa. I now know, in fact, that he reads the Rush message board although he doesn't post. He does a lot of buying on an auction site for cases of wine & electronics, as well as amazon.com and amazon.co.uk. Being English he likes the BBC and the Daily Telegraph site. He looks at other music sites too, probably the Frank Zappa official site and certainly Mike Keneally's (ex Zappa sideman) site.

Regarding Eagles songs he will admit to liking - would you believe he likes LWKUA, which is one of my least favourites, and ICTYW. He liked the HFO version of HC. He likes BOS.

There are a lot of photos, calendars and magnets of Glenn around this house. Occasionally I get the odd sarcastic comment but I use my old standby: 'Ill have Glenn Frey, you can have Kate Bush and/or Nancy Wilson'.

Wow, only three days away from the Board and I miss so much... :(

EF, I'm glad that you feel well enough to go back to work - but take it easy, now, you hear? That's an order from Glenn  .

FP, I'm happy for you that your political party of choice won the Australian elections. I wish them well.

DF and Brooke, I'm glad that you enjoyed the Thanksgiving weekend so much. It's always nice to spend time with family and friends who you don't get to see often.

DF, I don't know much about Garth Brooks (for some reason he's not big in South Africa), but I think it's great that he considers his fans so much by insisting on such a good price for tickets to his show. Good for him!

I was interested to read everyone's different situations regarding their husbands'/friends' tolerance regarding their Eagles interest. I have only had one boyfriend (earlier this year), and since he also enjoyed Eagles music (it was he who showed me "Hell Freezes Over" for the first time :D, and set me off onto Planet Eagles), he didn't mind my enthusiasm for them. I even logged onto the Board more than once from his computer, while he played piano! I proudly showed him Glenn's  "Live In Dublin", as well as "Farewell 1", which he hadn't seen before, and he really enjoyed the concerts. I think he was a little jealous of my being so in love with Glenn  , but it's a little silly, isn't it, since Glenn  doesn't know I exist, and he's married with children!

I feel for all of you whose husbands don't approve, as there is nothing wrong with being superfans of musicians/actors, etc. My mom and dad have always been very supportive of my enthusiasm for Elvis and The Beatles over the years, and now my dad is very interested in all my new Eagles/Glenn  music. I proudly show him any new pictures I acquire, and he knows about my visits to the Board. He thinks it's great that I've made all these new friends through my interest in The Eagles.

On the news front: I had little Board time on Friday as I accompanied my work colleagues to our annual Staff Luncheon, at a restaurant located pretty much on the beach. It was very enjoyable - the food was traditional South African dishes, the atmosphere relaxed, and we even had a Karaoke session. I was coaxed into doing a couple of songs, but I had to stop after that as after my laryngitis, the voice is not quite well yet. A great time was had by all. I was certain to get some Glenn  time, as I had him on my mp3 player on the bus to and from the venue - a good hour and a half each way. 8)

MF I'm delighted that your lunch went so well and that you were sufficiently recovered to at least take part in some of the singing. I hope your voice continues to improve and that you will be back singing at 100% very soon now. What dishes are traditional to South Africa? I'd love to know as I enjoy trying food from different parts of the world.

Actually would there be enough interest in starting a thread where we could post some of our favourite/traditional dishes? I do all the meal planning at home so new ideas would always be welcome.

I can't get here as much as I'd like to any more, as already explained. Thursday morning is my day off, so I've spent time here today catching up. Sorry if I can't reply to everyone's posts, but i've enjoyed reading them.

GA, a favourite recipes thread sounds fun. I'm not a great cook, but we nearly always have home cooked food in the evenings, much as I'd love to dive into the ready meal freezer at the supermarket sometimes!

Here's one on the hubby front.....

My hubby was working in the kitchen last night with his friend. I was in the sitting room watching F1 and dipping in and out of the various threads on the border, while also texting a good friend  Hubby came in to check something with me and commented on how clear the dvd was on the new TV plasma screen. Happy days!

Until his friend left and he sat down to join me. Glenn  was singing TS (I was admiring him) and a close up of all the lads came on. To which hubby commented....
'Gosh...when you see them close up now....they all look really OLD!!!!'
Of course he rendered me speechless! I should have of course responded
'I hope you look as well as Glenn  Frey when you're 59!'

I think it's ok to celebrate once in a while and eat whatever you want! Imo. Schmalzkuchen sounds good! I agree with Soda. If it's fattening, I would probably love it!

Yesterday I took my Mom to St. Louis to the Fabulous Fox Theater to see Dickens A Christmas Carol. (These were the tickets I won (or Beyonce did) at the Black Cat Beauty Contest!) It was soooo good. The theater certainly lives up to it's name. It is very grand and beautiful inside. The play was fabulous, too. The costumes and set were stunning and beautiful and the actors did a wonderful job. Aside from driving for 2 hours in pouring rain (nearly had to stop once it was raining so hard) and getting my slacks soaked to the knees as we ran from parking lot to theater 2 blocks, we had a great day! At least the ice storm from had Saturday melted!

I took some pics with my camera phone and if they turn out, I will post a couple.

The theater sounds great, Brooke. I'm glad you and your mother had a good time. I love those beautiful old theaters! The Alabama Theater here in Birmingham is like that, a grand movie palace with velvet tapestry curtains and a gold ceiling. They use it for both stage shows and movies. It has an old-fashioned organ called "The Mighty Wurlitzer" that rises out of the stage floor, and at Christmastime they show holiday movies and have a sing-a-long with Christmas carols. It is great fun.

Df, I'm glad your daughter's eye is better. Sounds like it was quite a plus for her in the end, to have the fun of choosing new makeup! We have a very English remedy for styes - bathing them with a hot tea-bag. Sometimes it works in the early stages by acting as a compress, but you have to be careful not to have it too hot.

MF, I hope your voice recovers in time for the gig, and that it goes well on Saturday. Best of luck!

GA, sorry to hear about your daughter's chest infection (and your hubby's enforced stay at home  ). I hope Laura gets better quickly, and that you get some Glenn time very soon!

Brooke, it was great to hear about your trip to the theatre. What a lovely prize your beautiful Beyonce won for you! :D I look forward to seeing some pics. The London theatres are very fine old buildings as well. I used to go quite often when I lived in London, but it's very rare now. The last time I went was two years ago, to see 'Guys and Dolls' with Ewan Macgregor (yum!)

EF, your Christmas market sound fun. Funnily enough, in my nearesy city, Plymouth, we have a German market in the city centre at Christmas. After hearing your description of Schmalzkuchen, I'm going to have to pay a visit! I'm shopping today as I have to go in to town to get my hair cut, so I'll definitely stop for a snack!

Soda, It's nice that your students have appreciated you. You deserve it!

Tonight, I am out to my work's Christmas do - it's at the local ski slope and we are snow-tubing! That should be a sight. I'll try and take some pictures, although my good camera has packed up for the third time :( so it's back to my old one.

Luckily there's an internet cafe (and a real one :D) attached to the music school! so I've been able to snatch a little Glenn    time :D

Glad you got a chance to slip pin, GA! Sorry to hear about your son but hopefully as you said the medicine will work.

Have fun on the slopes, GEF. I will not recount my own nightmarish experiences with skiing and instead wish you the best! Hopefully the tubing is a blast!

Ga, hope your son is back to normal soon. I'm sure you are missing those sibling aggravations!

Glad to hear from you gef. Have fun on the slopes! Makes me think of my ski trip to Breckenridge last winter and what fun we had learning!

DF, hope your daughter's eye is all cleared up and her new makeup looks fab!

I had a scare the other evening when I arrived home from work. One of hubby's coon hounds had pulled his chain loose from his house and was caught on our back deck. This is where my beloved Beyonce has her house! Well, he was howling and jerking at his chain and there was straw and ripped up foam padding in a mess everywhere. (from inside her house) My first thought was where is Beyonce! I got the dog loose and tied back where he belonged and then took to walking the yard calling for the cat. Nowhere and no meowing. But, no blood to be seen either. I figured the dog had caught the cat first and drug her off and then came back to see if there were any more! I finally gave up looking when it got dark and I couldn't see and then hubby got home. He figured the cat had probably just run away, but why hadn't she come back when I called? I kept checking the doors to see if she had showed up and finally, there she was! She ran in the house meowing and acting like "Mom, don't you ever leave me out there with those beasts again!" And all is well! And Beyonce has resumed life as a housecat! :D

Oh, thank God Beyonce is grand. I don't have cats but I can imagine the feeling of losing one would be similar to that of losing a small child. We had an 8 member search party out once for my son when he was just gone 2 (and we live in a relatively 'safe' area.) He was in MY car all the time! But I will never forget the feeling of pure relief! I didn't even give out to him for lipsticking the seats!

I'm glad you found Beyonce safely! It is SO scary when you miss your cat (or dog).

Our cat Muffin is a housecat too, and she slipped out the door during a party we had over the summer. Since we had a houseful of guests I didn't realize she was gone until it got dark, and it was impossible to see her almost black fur in the night. Then we really started to panic because she has been declawed and we live in a neighborhood full of dogs--how could she protect herself? I finally saw her gold eyes shining under a bush in our front yard, and grabbed her & brought her safely inside. It is amazing how attached we get to our pets--they are truly members of the family!

My worst lost-cat experience was when my cat Oreo went missing for THREE days during a horrible rain storm in Houston where the neighborhood was flooded. I was positive he was gone, but I searched the woods behind our house in the pouring rain every day. Finally, on the third day when the weather started to clear, I came back from a search to see him sitting calmly on the porch as if nothing had ever happened! He was wet and hungry, but otherwise fine. He lived to be 20 and died of natural causes. It really was like losing a member of the family. I sobbed uncontrollably in that vet's office for 20 minutes after I had him put to sleep (he had renal failure), then went home and cried some more (thankfully my boyfriend was there to drive me). Though it happened three years ago now, it still upsets me to think of it. After all, I got him when I was in elementary school, and I lost him when I was in GRADUATE school.

But whether they're old or young, we love our kitties!

Boy, that sounds familiar-that's how it works at our house, as well. And, that's why the dogs will have the biggest presents under the Christmas tree this year (they're both getting new doggie beds).

GA, hope your little one is feeling better. It's hard to see such a small child sick-they just don't understand what's happening to them.

Dana, I feel bad for your daughter. My mom used to get stye's and they made her miserable. I've read how makeup should never be used if it's more than 1 year old. I admit-I'm guilty of hanging on to things-especially eye shadows too long. But to replace it all...$$$$!

Brooke, glad Beyonce is OK. How scary. When Layla came to us frm the animal shelter this past spring-we were told she was a stray. When she was brought in my the sherrif's department the first time-she managed to get away from the shelter workers and went missing again from 3 days. Poor baby. She's such a scaredy cat I can only imagine how terrifed she must have been. She's never even attempted to leave our yard. She's not a runner-which makes me believe she didn't originally run away from her previous owner- but was instead dumped off and abandoned.

I've got a bit of catching up to do here.

GA, Soda and GEF - thank you for your good wishes for my gig last weekend. Thankfully, my voice held up and the gig went well. We played at a new restaurant which our drummer and his associates have opened at the Quad Bike track they work at. It was very windy and dusty at the venue, unfortunately, but the wind died down towards the evening, when we started playing.

My voice is still going at about 70%. I started the gig out tentatively (and I could afford to since I was doing a few gentle songs to start with), but eventually went into it as I would usually. I was careful not to strain my voice, and made sure that my monitor was loud enough to hear myself above the instrumentation.

GA, I'm sorry that your son has got ill again, and I hope he's making a speedy recovery.

Soda, I'm sorry that you felt down about not graduating this semester, but I can imagine how good it must have felt to get such positive feedback from your students. That's great for you.

DF, your daughter's eye stye must have given you a huge fright, but I'm glad that she's okay and that she enjoyed choosing her new make-up.

GEF, I hope you enjoyed your work Christmas outing. I look forward to seeing some photos!

Brooke, I'm so glad you found Beyonce. What an awful experience for you. I feel for each of you who have related your stories of your pets getting lost. I was in that position as a child, when our dog went missing. We got him when he was 11 months old, and unfortunately he was difficult to control, as he was raised the wrong way - he spent a lot of time running loose on the street. One day he didn't come home, and we looked everywhere, but couldn't find him. The following morning at 04:00, my mom found him lying under the tree in front of our house, so tired that he could barely walk. We found out later that one of our cruel neighbours, who had apparently had enough of our dog visiting her, enticed him into her car and dropped him off in a place quite a distance from where we live. Miraculously, he found his way home.

I'm going through a tough time at the moment - my future at my workplace is uncertain, due to changes in the business, and one of my bosses, who is also a friend, is in ICU in hospital. Cancer is suspected, but we have to wait for the results of her cat scan. I feel quite helpless right now, and depressed, and can only hope and pray that everything will work out for the best.

Glad your gig went well, a little more rest and I'm sure you'll be back full strength. Sorry to hear about your boss, hope the news is good. Hang in there, something else will come along if the worst happens and your job ends. Don't let the depression get the upper hand, throw some music in and dance, a little Glenn and you'll feel much better! I don't mean to sound like I take your feelings lightly, I know that depression can really keep you down, just trying to lighten things up a little and make your day a little brighter.

So sorry to hear about your boss, MF. We'll all be hoping and praying for her, and also for your future at your job. It's very worrying when there is uncertainty, but know that you have a great bunch of friends here who will do their best to support you.

Brooke, that must have been awful when Beyonce went missing, but such a relief when she turned up. We had a similar experience when we came back from holiday earlier this year. Our neighbours who were feeding our cats hadn't seen Jethro for two days - not unusual, and we didn't really start to worry until our other neighbours showed us their back lawn covered with ginger fur. We thought a fox had got him, and started searching the hedges. Nearly 24 hours later, my son had one last try calling him, and there he was, very jittery but none the worse for wear.

Df and Soda, I'm glad your cat stories had happy endings too, although I feel for you, Soda, when you finally lost Oreo. The cat I had when I was 10 died while I was a newly wed living in Hong Kong, and I cried when my parents phoned with the news. He was 19.

MF, that's a terrible story about your neighbour dumping your dog - how cruel can people get? He was brave and clever to find his way home.

Molly, Layla has certainly been lucky to find a loving home after such a tough beginning.

Becky, Soda, GA and GEF: thank you all so very much for your good wishes, advice and being so caring. I appreciate it so much. I'm actually spending a bit of time here after work hours to post, as I spent a large part of the day at another staff luncheon, but with another department, of which I'm also a part.

We were on a wine estate this time, with breathtaking surroundings, and the food was good. The atmosphere was a lot more sedate compared to the previous staff lunch (a very upmarket restaurant indeed  ), but enjoyable nevertheless. It's only a great pity that my boss and friend could not join us. She is out of ICU now, at least, and wanted her laptop! She sent all of us a very long e-mail, updating us on her condition and what is lying ahead for her. She is still humorous and very positive, and I can only admire her for that. I wish I was more like her.

Becky, don't worry, I know you're not taking my feelings lightly. Believe me, I listen to plenty of music and I do dance, although having been sick I haven't really had the energy. Yes, Glenn  certainly helps lift my mood too. I'm trying my best to be positive.

Soda, you're right about Becky's advice! :D

GA, thanks for your limitless support, girlfriend!

GEF, I know how wonderful you all are, and am so grateful for all your support. :grouphug: Lord knows, everyone here has really helped me through some tough times over the last 9 months.

Soda and GEF, I feel for both of you, having had your cats for so long and having had to lose them. I lost my dog, who was a Labrador/Rottweiler cross, at 16 years and 9 months old. He wasn't supposed to live that long, but he loved us so much that he had a zest for life, and we adored him. Our vet used to tell us, when we took him in more frequently for all the little ailments that befell him in old age, that it was all the TLC he was getting that made him live that long. Eventually, his body simply stopped functioning, and we had to have him put down. I went to work that day, and my father had the unenviable task of taking him to the vet. When I got home, my mother broke the news to me - I think they both wanted to spare me having to witness his passing - and I sobbed uncontrollably. It took us all a long time to adjust to life without him. He was like my little brother, and I still miss him. We lost him three days before my birthday, in 2003.

My family just lost our cat. He was the neighborhood cat before he adopted our family and had been with us for the last 18 months. My neighbor let his pit bull off the chain and went somewhere, leaving her unsupervised. You can guess what happened so I won't go into details, just tell you it was horrible.

On a brighter note, I'm involved in helping my friend become 501 3c certified as a non profit animal shelter. She has cared for everything from dogs and cats to possums and squirrels. My grand daughter plays with them to help them become used to children and more social. It's quite an undertaking and she operates on a shoe-string budget, but it's her passion and I help in whatever way I can.

So many of us are experiencing illness and hard circumstances in our lives, I'm thankful we all have this board and each other to lean on.

Here's a tiny bit of good news....I'm so excited, my kids are coming tonight for a visit, an early Christmas for us. I haven't seen my daughter in a year and my son for two years, so I'm really excited about it. She's living in Witchita Falls Texas and he's been in the Navy in South Carolina. He flew to Texas and they are driving here to Tennessee. Can't wait to see them although we will be missing my oldest daughter and granddaughter since they aren't able to be here. But I'm really looking forward to their visit and can hardly wait for them to get here.

MF, I'm glad you were able to have an enjoyable lunch today and that your boss and friend appears to be feeling better and positive. Hopefully things can only improve from here on in, and that if it is serious that it has been caught in time. Fingers crossed.

That was a terribly cruel thing that your neighbour did to your dog. I'm glad he managed to make his way home to you and your family for another 16 years of love. I don't blame you being upset when he became too ill to continue. Losing a pet is the same as losing a family member. At least you have had the comfort of knowing that you gave him a very happy home and family and that you did the best you could for him.

Rcknalwys, I'm delighted that your son and daughter are able to spend some time with you. I hope you all enjoy yourselves, and comiserations on the loss of your cat.

Thanks for your good wishes MF and GEF. The 'cold' end of things has 'dried out' but the chest is still quite bad and I still feel quite dizzy. The staff Christmas do where I used to work is tomorrow night. As a friend of mine went to the trouble to inform me about it I'll try to attend, but I hope I feel a little better by then!

On a more positive note we took the kids out on their 'Christmas Treat' last Sunday. This involved lunch out, where the waiter was amazed when my daughter asked for potatoes and veg instead of chips :!: Then a trip to Santa Claus in the 'Chocolate Warehouse'. They have a lovely Santa grotto there with fantastic models made out of chocolate for the kids (and adults) to ooh and aah at while they queue to visit the man himself. Then they get to make a Christmas cracker, and post their Santa 'Wish list'. After that it was onto the RDS (a concert venue beside Lansdowne Road where the Eagles played 18 months and 2 days ago) to go ice skating. My Daughter (6) took to it like a duck to water and was flying around by the end of it. My son was a little more apprehensive but enjoyed playing on the toboggans. A good time was had by all and we transported 2 sleeping kids into the house by the time we got home!

Things are crazy around here, as well. Between computer issues and not enough hours in the day-my Border time is being severely compromised!

GA, your kids are adorable! I miss having small kids around and doing all those kid things like visiting Santa and sledding. I guess I'll just have to wait a few more years and maybe my boys will give me grandchildren. I did NOT just say that!

MF -I've been dealing with uncertainty at work for nearly a year now. Our hospital may merge with a larger healthcare provider-none of us know what that means for our jobs. Employees alternate being being apprehensive and edgy to sullen and mopey. I'm at the point where I'm tired of all the discussion and want the leadership to make up their minds and just "Do Something!!" I do fear if not losing my job (of 23 years) probably losing all the benefit time I've accumulated over the years.

Becky, how horrible about your cat! Some people in our neighborhod just had their grown son move back home and he brought his pit bull with him. Beautiful dog, but I've walked past their house with my two female labs and the dog has taken a very defiant almost aggressive posture when we've walked by. I'm hoping he's just being territorial. Trust me, my girls won't be setting a paw into his territory!

My empty nest has gotten to be quite full in the past two weeks. My oldest son, Tom has moved back home after being out on his own for 3 1/2 years. It's been a challenge to find a place for all of his "stuff". I missed him so much while he was gone-it's wonderful to be able to see him each and every day. But -oh my gosh, he keeps weird hours (he works the graveyard shift). And, I have to get used to having another female in the house since his girlfriend of 2 years is here quite a bit. She's a sweety, so it's fine. Just different.

Peter came home from Marquette yesterday (lock the refrigerator and the pantry!) He came home with his ear pierced and his Dad nearly had a heart attack. So -I've put on my referee shirt again today (I think Santa needs to bring me a whistle) and am trying to convince my husband it's no big deal. It will take a day or two, but as is his pattern, hubby will eventually get over it!

MF - let's hope you shake this voice thing soon. Try mouthing the words. That what I do at concerts so I don't lose my voice - well, I don't lose it unless I start screaming. lol

Molly, I know you must love having your boys back around, even if for one it's only temporary. And if you ever get tired of having the girlfriend around, just say "I can't wait for grandchildren" really loudly around the two of them a lot. She should be history fairly soon after that. ;)

Molly, my lovely blonde honor-student-college freshman Rachel came home from Montevallo earlier this fall with her LIP pierced. Talk about almost having a heart attack! I have absolutely no clue where the desire to do that came from, and I was mortified. Hubby said she has always done the right thing, made good grades and done what is expected of her, so when she went off to college she decided to do something "outside the box." After the initial shock wore off, we decided the less said about it, the better, and hopefully she will tire of it soon and remove it. Thanksgiving she spent all her time explaining it to relatives who hadn't seen it, while I just bit my tongue and walked away. What she doesn't realize is that, fairly or unfairly, people judge you by your appearance and she has just made it harder for for people to get past that first impression to get to know her sweet heart. Oh well...I just keep telling myself--this, too, shall pass.

Molly, your life sounds so much like mine!

I'm missing having little kids around for the snow and sledding fun, too! Our kids are grown but aren't married, so no little ones in sight yet. Our son has a serious girlfriend, but (hopefully) kids aren't in the picture yet!

He has just informed us that he has dropped out of college and is moving home after the New Year! He has only 1 more semester. :( It will be a change for us having him around all the time again, but we welcome him back until he can get a job and support himself. He will be going back into carpentering with his Dad, so he has a plan, at least. He says he hates what he is doing in college, so there's no use continuing. Plus he's homesick and wants to be here rather than there. I really wanted him to finish, but he is determined. I don't know how the long distance relationship will work for him and his girlfriend. Oh yes, we went through the ear piercing, too! At first, hubby threatened to yank it out or he was sure his brothers would! Now he has one in each ear, so I guess the threat didn't scare him! All I can say is, thank God there are no eyebrow, lip, or nose piercings! How about a tattoo? He has one that I know of! He managed to get it during his high school senior trip. Called home to tell me after he had done it! lol

Our daughter is happily single and plans to stay that way, so she says. And no kids, so no use asking! As long as she's happy, that's ok. I guess! :(

All this talk of teens and their adornments. I can go one better - my 16 year old gave himself a tatoo      (tatoo parlors around here won't give tatoos to 16 year olds). Can you imagine? I left it to his Dad to read him the riot act which included threatening to sand it off with an electric sander - Ha! <Sigh> Why can't they be convinced that a few years from now they're probably going to regret it. My oldest son had a friend of his do a small tatoo on the top of his foot. It's an spade, like in a deck of cards.

My younger son (with the brand spanking new earring) is studying business and law. We're hoping he'll come across a boss while doing an internship who will tell him he has to remove it. His boss right now (a younger woman) thinks it's "cool".

Over here its becoming the norm for bosses to do and say 'absolutely nothing' about piercings, tattoos etc. The flavour of the month is that the young person is 'expressing him/herself' and also it just might be against someones religious/cultural beliefs and so could have the company dope for discrimination  Apparently its the person inside, and their quality of work which counts, rather than how they look. While this is basically a sound notion, it could be taken a bit far.....JMO!

Mrs. F, please rest that voice so you can sing when you really have to! And 3 days with no Border? I'm having withdrawls and it's only been since yesterday afternoon!

Thanks for being so caring, Brooke! I haven't exactly been resting it as much as I should, though . I had a jam session with friends on Saturday afternoon, as their guitarist couldn't make their practice. I sat in on rhythm guitar, and ended up doing some lead and harmony vocals as well! The band's lead singer is a huge Eagles/Glenn  fan (I knew about her interest in the Eagles, but it came as a surprise when she mentioned that she thought Glenn  was one of the sexiest men around - and she's 22 years old! :D ), and we did a few Eagles songs together, including "How Long" (well, I did that one!), "Take It Easy", "Peaceful Easy Feeling", "The Girl From Yesterday", "Heartache Tonight" and "Lyin' Eyes". Well, actually I did lead vocals on all of them. So I was a bad girl. I had a great time, though!

The voice is not too bad, although I'm still coughing. I've got two band practices this week, so I'm going to have to "take it easy". I think I'll be okay by the weekend.

Molly, I'm sorry about your uncertainty at work, especially after you've been working there for such a long time. I hope everything works out well for you, and that you'll have peace of mind soon.

Thanks for the support, Soda. I've tried mouthing the words, but the urge to sing along can prove too great at times!

I'm glad that you've had a reasonably good time on your family vacation. I'm sorry for the lowlights you've experienced - reading a couple of them made me cringe (especially point 2)! I know it's easier said than done, but try not to let it get to you.

Glad you are having a good time, Nancy!

I loved going up in the Sears Tower when I visited Chicago a few years ago. We also ate at some famous pizza place and I can't remember the name of it. I think some gangsters used to hang out at it back in the day. Anyone know the name of it?

As for your brother-in-law's comments, I think he needs to mind his own business! Geez!

People who don't have that obsession with the Eagles will never understand that. I gave up a while ago.

I'm glad you had a good time with your family even if you had to deal with the nice comments about losing weight or having kids. Do they ever think about that you have to find "Mr. Right" at first? And that's hard enough I think.

MF, that sounds like a great weekend. Playing all these songs together with another Eagles/Glenn fan must have been a lot of fun. :D

I have a week off as from tomorrow, yay! :D I only have to work for 2 days after Christmas but from my experience there's not much to do. The only thing is my boss will be here too so I hope he leaves me alone that I can play games or come here. :P

My aunt told me she was planning to fly to the wedding of her son Johnny tomorrow. He lives in Kentucky and wants to get married before he goes to the Iraq. But then she got a strange feeling but didn't know why and she thought she shouldn't fly. Now she knows why she felt uncomfortable... tomorrow it's the 2nd anniversary of my brother's death and she was here at this time and saw him just before he died. She cancelled her plans.

Thanks for the sympathy guys! It's always nice to come here and vent. ;)

I tried to tell my sister about Niagara Falls but let's just say her level of excitement didn't match mine. "Oh, that was nice of him." She just has NO IDEA what it meant to me and I didn't know how to explain it to her. Oh well! But I also told my brother-in-law who is an Eagles fan, and I do think he was a bit jealous (after I convinced him I wasn't making it up!) lol

MF - glad to hear you're getting a bit better. How cool about meeting a fellow Frey fan. He's EVERYWHERE! ;)

Highlighted text: I can identify with you completely, Soda. It was always difficult for me when I was at school, trying to share my musical interests, i.e. Elvis and The Beatles, with my school friends. They just didn't get it, and couldn't share in my enthusiasm. I find that at least now that I'm older, I have friends who seem to understand, especially now that I've become such a huge Eagles/Glenn  fan, and can't help sharing that enthusiasm with them.

Thanks for the support regarding my health, Soda. It was indeed cool to meet a fellow Frey fan. I could hardly believe it!

GA, thanks also for your ongoing support. Yes, my friends do indeed have good taste in music! :D

We spent the rest of the day helping his dad, who decided to wreak devastation in the back garden with his chainsaw!

My kids just left this morning and I'm already missing them. They were here for 5 days and we celebrated birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas, all at the same time. I got lots of Eagles-related things, the deluxe edition, Farewell 1 dvd, 3 Eagles t-shirts and an iPod to put lots and lots of Eagle"s music on. We took pics of all of us in Eagles tees, can't wait to share them. Did I mention the part where all my kids are Eagles fans also? Raised 'em right, lol. It was so great to see them, my daughter lives in Wichita Falls Texas and it's been a year since she visited. My son has been in the Navy, went to Iraq, so it's been 2 years since we were together. GEF your looks like a lot of industrious work being done in your garden. I'm pleased to hear your golf is going so well. Is this a new found interest  . I hope you enjoy your Christmas holidays off work, particularly with your son home.

Soda!! Hang in there with the renovations to your parents house. We were in that boat last summer and have still a few finishing touches to apply but believe me, its worth it. We did up the whole ground floor as well as getting a sunroom built (in Ireland :?: ) and extending the kitchen. It was a pain in the neck at the time! We got some of those new appliances you are talking about also. They are amazingly easy to use once you get used to them. If your parents are having difficulty many of the companies run intro worshops over here and demo's. Maybe you have them in the states as well. I'm glad Milton was able to travel so easily on the plane. Hope the return journey is as good.

Ryknalwys, Sorry to hear that your kids have departed from you already, 5 days is so short, but I'm sure they'll treasure the memories of the time you all spent together for a long long time. I cant wait to see the Eagles tee pics. You have certainly raised your family right!

Wow, I envy all of you who are so busy over the Festive Season, either with home renovations (Soda's parents), family visiting (Becky and GEF) or just generally making special plans. I sadly have no such plans, except for taking two weeks of leave from work (which is actually only 7 working days with all the holidays in between), to recharge my batteries after a very long year. There's lots to do at home, and I'm going to be active with the band too, but there isn't going to be too much Christmas spirit at home, though. :(

I'll be playing an hour-long concert tomorrow evening at a large outdoor venue, where we've played, with great success, before. We have a stand-in bassist for the occasion (as our regular bassist had a prior commitment), who is excellent, so things should go well. I hope my voice holds up, as I'm still coughing, and still battling .

There's a New Year's Eve gig coming up for us as well - a 5-hour-long stint at a Yacht Club bash - for which we have to prepare. I'm somewhat nervous as we still have a lot of work to do, and trying to weave practice around the holidays is a difficult task indeed. I'm grateful for the work that we're getting, but I'm so tired that everything seems like a chore at present. When your passion becomes a chore, then you know you need a break!

Since I'm going to be on leave, I won't have any access to the Border (although I'm planning to come into work for one day for personal purposes next week :D ), so I would like to wish all of you a joyous Christmas, filled with love, peace and comfort. May your New Year hold abundant blessings for you, and may all your dreams come true. Thank you all for your friendship - your warmth and kindness has been greatly appreciated. Hey everyone! We've had a very busy few days around here and my internet service went down Sunday and part of Monday. I've been missing all of you!

My son and his girlfriend arrived Sat. evening and my daughter arrived in a snow storm late Sat. evening, so with extras and the constant coming and going it's been rather hectic! I'm chief cook and bottle washer around here, so I really didn't know which way was up till now! We delivered the daughter back to St. Louis to the airport at noon, so that was another trip. The house is finally back in order and most of the gifts put away.

We all had a great time and enjoyed being together once again, although, there were a few strained moments along the way as usual! So Soda, don't think you are the only one with those! (The Bob Seger story was too funny!) lol

My most special present was from my husbands brother and his wife. They had bought an old china doll at my Grandmother's estate sale 12 years ago and they gave it to me for Christmas. I didn't even know they had it and was completely shocked. It is a precious treasure for me. I have a lot of her things, but it is a wonderful addition and I'm so grateful for it and it was so sweet of them to give it to me.

Yes, Jeff, I have several people I miss at Christmas, too.

Glad to hear your gig went well Mrs F and hopefully, everyone has had a merry ol' time! :D

Glad you're back with us Brooke and that you had a good one! What an exquisite present that china doll was, and I'm sure an heirloom. Can you post a pic of her some time. It was extremely thoughtful of your family members to give it to you.

We had a cold Christmas over here with a heavy frost on Christmas eve and Christmas night. Very picturesque! Then Wednesday night the rain started and it rained incessantly yesterday. Today is bright and mild so I'm going to get the kids out in the open! They need to shake off the cobwebs. So do I!

Brooke, I highlighted that particular paragraph as I just enjoyed so much how you wrote it! Chief cook and bottle washer! I also loved the way you said you "delivered the daughter"!

That's a lovely gift you received from your brother-in-law and his wife. I'm sure you had a lump in your throat upon receiving it.

Thank you for your support regarding my gig, too.

Soda and GA, thanks to you too for the support. The New Year's Eve gig is closing in on me now, but I'm going to try and relax about it. I'm going to be singing 37 songs! Nothing I haven't done before, of course, but my voice is vulnerable. I just hope and pray I don't damage anything. It's not often we do 5-hour gigs.

GA, I hope the weather improves a bit in Dublin for the next few days! We've been having temperatures of over 30 degrees celcius over the last few days! Too hot!

I came into the office today for personal reasons, and of course, took advantage and logged onto GFO! I don't know if I'll get another chance within the next week, but if not, I wish you all a fantastic New Year's Day! :grouphug:

I have enjoyed reading about everyone's holidays, both here and in the Merry Christmas thread.

Mrs. F, I'm glad your gig went so well!

Brooke, I loved your story about the china doll--what a great gift! I collect dolls--I have saved almost every doll I ever had, beginning with Barbies and Betsy McCalls and Tammys, all the way through at least a 100 Madame Alexanders--so I would definitely treasure that china doll. The fact that is belonged to your grandmother makes it even more special. Would you please take a picture of the doll for me? I'd love to see it.

Brooke

Oh my, DF! You must have quite a collection! I wish I had saved my dolls. Especially my Barbies.

I'll see what I can do about a pic of my Grandma's.

Thanks for the warm vibe and the well wishes. I hope everyone had a good Christmas. The first half of mine was probably the lamest Christmas in all of my 49 years, mainly because I was alone, byut it picked up towards the late afternoon and in the evening there was enough "stuff" to finish the day off pretty nicely. 2007 has been a very trippy year!

MF, good luck with your gig today. I know you are not reading today but still.

Nothing special happened to me the last days.

On Saturday I went to the shopping mall with my mom just to have a good time, looking if they had already lowered prices after Christmas. Among others we were rummaging in a music store. While my mom looked for Elvis CDs I went to the charts section and what I've found made me happy, lots of Eagles copies :D

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l76/elafo/29-12-07_1441.jpg

Then I went to “U” just to take a short look if they have any Keith stuff there. To my surprise they actually had about 15 copies in the shelf which is not usual for a German music store. But they were all arranged in a row so I thought that’s just wrong, they have to be more visible among all the other artists. At that point I remembered what Soda did, removing stuff what blocks the view. I couldn’t resist and grabbed all his CDs and put each one copy in front of other artists. I stepped back to check the view and now it looks like there are tons of Keith's CDs. How pathetic is that?

Becky, that's a fantastic picture of your family, thanks for posting. :D

Congratulations on your 2000th post, dreamer. It doesn't seem any time since you and I were "Out on the Border"!

Becky, your kids look a lovely bunch of people, and it's great that they will wear Eagles t-shirts. Mine would  . I have both the shirts your girls are wearing. :)

Jeff, sorry to hear you were on your own, but glad that things 'mellowed' towards the evening.

EF, good luck with your sporting plans, and I liked hearing about your rearrangements of the shop display!

Brooke, you must have really been touched by your brother-in-law's present. That will be a treasured doll.

I'm about to fight my way into town, with snow showers and gales forecast. I asked for a new coat on my Christmas list, and thinking hubby wouldn't have a clue about what size I am etc, I bought one and gave it to him to wrap. He was a bit taken aback, and said "What made you think I wouldn't buy you a coat?" The upshot was, I had two new coats for Christmas, and actually, the one hubby chose is really nice, but two sizes too small! So I'm going to see if I can change his, and return the other.

Brooke - I'd love to see a photo of that doll, too. It sounds very special.

Well-dressed family, Becky! ;) The Hotel California shirt was the one I got for Christmas as well.

Michaela, good luck on the sports. I've decided I'm going to go on a cereal diet. We'll see how long THAT lasts!

Kate, lol about the two coats! I guess it's better that he guesses your size as too small than vice versa, lol.

Yes Michaela! Good luck with the sports. :blueblob: Which ones are you in to? Golf? , Basketball?  Whatever it is I hope the resolution lasts.

Kate I hope you managed to change the coat(s) for the one you liked in the correct size.

I've made the usual resolution based on eating less 'junk' and taking more exercise, but it hasn't started yet! I'm waiting for the kids to go back to school on Monday. I've 2 incentives this year (apart from hoping the boys or Glenn  will tour). My parents Golden Wedding Anniversary is in mid-February and my own 40th Birthday at the end of February! We'll see!! :D

Becky, what a nice family photo. The look on your son's face made me laugh-it looked so familiar! I have two young men in my house that often have that bleary-eyed, do I have to get up before noon?, look on their faces as well.

Michaela, good luck with your resolution. I've started working out again, as well. Between that, and the way my job stress has my stomach in knots lately and I can't eat, hopefully, I'll see some results. I have this week off coming up in February  . I'm hoping I'll be so distracted by the scenery  , I won't even think of work the entire time!

Kate, at least hubby was just buying you a coat. Every now and then my hubby decides to go underwear shopping for me. Nothing worse than panties that are two sizes too small!

Brooke, what a thoughtful, priceless gift! My sister has a doll from our grandmother that I've always coveted. There were 4 girls in my family and she got the doll! Guess we know who Grandma liked the best! :scowl: Maybe it was because Grandma always saw me with a baseball glove or riding bikes instead of playing with dolls!

Thanks everyone for your nice comments on our family pic. It's good to know someone else has kids that don't do well before noon Molly. The kids treated me to 5 Eagles T's, the deluxe edition and the Farewell 1 dvd, so the least they could do is wear the T's. By the way, I'm the one in the California tour tee, my daughter has the LROOE one, she tried to steal it from me after the pic was taken!

Like everyone else, I made a few NY resolutions to get in shape. For me it's time to get back to watching my blood sugar levels and taking my insulin. I kind of fell off the wagon over the holidays.

Thanks everyone for sharing their highs and lows over the holiday. This board has been such a support for those of us going through sad times, and a place to share our thoughts and feelings. I know it's already been said, but I want to wish everyone a wonderful 2008 again.

Gosh, I really have so much to catch up with, and so little time in which to do so! Oh hell, I'm going to try anyway:

Thanks for everyone's well wishes for my New Year's Eve gig. I have quite a bit to tell you all about it as well as another happening during my time off work, but first things first:

Dreamer, congratulations on your 2,000th post! Here's to many more entertaining and thoughtful posts from you!

GEF, I hope you're able to get your hubby's lovely gift exchanged with one in a suitable size. How cool that you got a 12 mile bike ride in. I want to start cycling again myself soon. I used to do 70 kilometre (sorry, I'm not sure how many miles that is - I know that 60 miles is equal to 100 kilometres) rides, but now I'm hardly on my bike. I started riding again in November (13 kilometre rides), but then I got ill and stopped again. :(

EF, good luck with your sporting ventures!

Soda, good luck with your cereal diet! I must tell you, though, that I wouldn't recommend it. Rather eat a balanced diet, cutting out most of the "junk" foods, and take more exercise. Eight glasses of water a day helps a lot too. Once one starts to starve the body of essential nutrients, it will be only a matter of time before one reverts to old habits, and puts back all the weight one has lost! Take it from someone who has tried "starving" herself to lose weight! JMHO!

GA, you have plenty of motivation to get started on that balanced diet/exercise New Year's resolution, girlfriend, so start TODAY! I've decided that I'm going to resume my workout regimen today, and start eating better too. Like Becky, I fell off the wagon for a while too, but I was ill for a few weeks, so that pretty much spoilt my plans.

Molly, good for you that you've resumed your workouts. I'm sorry that you have had so much work stress, and I hope that the situation improves for you soon. I know how you feel, believe me. :(

I have so much more to say, but I've run out of time :( , so I'm going to sign off for now. Oh, I'm so excited to be back! :D

Mrs Frey, we're going to have to get you a tshirt! I had a collection at one time, then my house burned down and I lost them, so getting these were an extra treat. I've got one more I'm still looking for, it was from HFO with a pic of all the guys in a field, will probably find it on eBay eventually. Looking forward to hearing about your NYE gig.

Wow, 2000 posts! Dreamer you go girl!

I'm so :jealous: of your WalMart's good taste in music. Mine only had one copy of the deluxe edition, which I bought of course. I keep checking for more but they STILL haven't brought any in. I did a little "rearranging" myself, they had most of the other Eagles cds in the bins of other artists, so of course I had to fix that!

Good luck to all of us in our endeavor to get back in shape. It's hard work but someone has to do it!

I saw this on a t-shirt once and I love it. "I'm in shape. Round is a shape!"

We are having the weirdest weather here in Wisconsin! Just a few days ago it was a whopping zero degrees. Today it was 60 degrees! We've had thick, thick fog (becausethe warm air is touching the cold snow covered ground ). Yesterday, there was a 50 car accident near our capital city of Madison with a few people being killed.

Today, with the warm weather, we've had thunderstorms, hail, a lot of wind and lightning and a number of tornados touching down about an hour south of me-apparently doing a lot of damage. It's January!! We never have these kinds of conditions this time of the year!

How weird is this? I just heard from my mom not even 10 minutes ago that one of the tornadoes you're probably referring to touched down a mile from my brother's house in northern Illinois. My sister-in-law had to take my nephew and niece and some neighbor kids into her basement. And, yesterday, her sister was behind that 50-car accident and had to turn around and find an alternate route.

Btw, Michigan is having the same weird weather too. It already felt - and smelled - like spring this morning.

Well its been much the same in Dublin. Weird weather! or should I say 'Strange Weather' ?. After the worst summer in living memory and the driest autumn we are having a winter that really isn't a winter at all. More just high winds and rain and mild (enough for us!). We'd a few cold days in December alright but the nearly cast iron guarantee of snow every year when we were kids seems to be gone. We had a flurry last week but it came to nothing  .

I hope that most of the people affected by that monumental pile up yesterday have recovered and havn't been seriously injured.

I also hope all of your families are safe Molly and Katherine.

We never see Elvis on our local channels anymore. Fortunately, I have the shows on VHS, but I'm after the DVDs now (the picture quality is breathtaking! ). Next on my list is the "Aloha From Hawaii: Deluxe Edition" two DVD set, which features not only the official Aloha concert which was broadcast via satellite to 1.3 billion people on 14 January 1973, but also the rehearsal concert on 12 January. It's also expensive, but worth it to me. I'm celebrating Elvis' birthday today by wearing my Elvis T-shirt, which I had made a few years ago.

Becky, I'm sorry to read that your house burned down. I can't imagine how traumatic that must have been for you and your family. I'll tell you all about the NYE gig in a separate post.

As for the LROOE Deluxe Edition, it's not available in any of our local stores, from what I've seen.

I started my exercise routine on Monday - I did an intensive 15 minute workout (I used Glenn's  "Love In The 21st Century" and also "He Took Advantage" as workout music :D ), and I was fine until the next evening. Suddenly my right inner thigh decided to get really sore. Yesterday, I managed to walk to work fairly normally, but then the muscle got cold. I hobbled around most of the day, and I'm still hobbling around. Now my hip and back are also painful because of the awkward way I'm walking! :x

Highlighted text: That is funny, Molly! I remember hearing a disc jockey on one of our local radio stations saying that about himself!

On a more serious note, to you and Katherine, I'm sorry to read about the car accident and the life threatening weather conditions you have been experiencing. I hope you will all be okay.

GA, TBSF, Dreamer and Soda, you have had "Strange Weather" indeed. Cape Town has had some uncharacteristic rain for this time of year, but it's back to the 30 degrees celcius and above mark today. The wind (known as the South Easter or Cape Doctor) has been really awful, blowing at up to 50 knots on occasion. It's particularly bad where I work. The only consolation about the wind though is that when it blows, it's not so hot. On days like today, when the wind is minimal, the heat is pretty unbearable. Due to air conditioning, I don't feel it in my office, though.

Well, I've been threatening for some time now to tell you all about my New Year's Eve gig, so here goes:

My day started at 16:15, when I left my house to meet my bandmates for the upload of the equipment. We got to the Yacht Club, where the function was held, at 18:00, and we proceeded to set up our equipment. We commenced at 21:00 and finished (or I finished) at 02:20. We were supposed to finish at 02:00, but an Irish lady, after we had performed a special song for the English members of our audience for New Year's ("Green Green Grass of Home"), asked us to do an Irish song for her. It just so happens that I can play "Wild Mountain Thyme", and proceeded to play it for her solo (just my rhythm guitar and vocal), as the band had not practised it. The dance floor had cleared by then, as we had announced we had finished our show, but a few returned for the song. The Irish lady was so emotional that she cried, and even gave me a little tip, which I refused, but to no avail.

I also danced a with a nine-year-old girl between sets (we play CDs during our 15-minute breaks), who had been watching me for most of the night. I went to meet her family after we danced, and her grandmother told me that she had been fascinated with my guitar playing, as she had just been given a guitar as a gift.

I was extremely touched by the above two events, and it made the evening very special for me. All-in-all, the gig was very well received by everyone, who danced the night away and sang along to our selection of songs. I arranged the set list so that we started with "Tequila Sunrise", and we also included "Lyin' Eyes" (to which people danced up a storm!) and "Hotel California". A young man who is an Elvis fanatic asked one of my bandmates if we knew either "Teddy Bear" or "Return To Sender", and he then consulted with me. I told him I knew both, and would perform the latter for him, as I sang it better. As my bandmate was announcing what we were going to do, I quickly worked out the chords! I don't recall I'd ever tried to play the song, even though I've always sung along with Elvis and know the song extremely well. The band joined me in drips and drabs as I played, but everyone responded well - I think we should add it to our repertoire!

I'm going to be brave and post two pics of myself from my open air gig on 22 December. They will be up for a limited time, so I hope you all get to see them. Please excuse the size of the pics:

Well it sounds like you did a fantastic job on New Years Eve MF and well done. How nice of you to sing for the Irish lady who was present, and also the little girl. Who knows, you may become her idol. I'm sure she'll remember for a long time to come.

Yes! Definitely add RTS to your repertoire. I'm sure it would go down very well, and it is one of the better known Elvis songs too, so I'm sure would be popular at gigs.

Finally you looked fantastic doing the earlier gig. Of course my first reaction was 'God she must be frozen', then remembering that of course in South Africa Christmas and New Year occur in the middle of summer!

(I've been dying to use that emoticon for ages!!)

Awwwwwwwwww... :grouphug:. GA, DF, Dreamer, EF, Soda and Brooke: thank you all for the wonderful compliments and messages of support. I'm very touched.

GA, I'll talk to the band about "Return To Sender". I reckon they saw the positive response to it (and we didn't even rehearse it! ), so hopefully they won't mind adding it to the repertoire. You made me laugh when you thought I was getting cold in my sparse outfit at my previous gig. The temperature was, as I recall, pushing 30 degrees celcius that day (I began performing at 19:30), so no, I was not frozen! I love that emoticon!

Dreamer, hopefully the people I met are now fans (I should be so lucky!) - I don't know if I'll ever see them again, though. :(

EF, yes, thank God my voice played along that night. It was a long gig and with 37 songs (on the original set list) to do I was very worried. All's well that ends well, though. As for my taking so long to post a picture - I'm really a very shy girl, you know...

Soda: yes, the Glenn  love certainly came in handy. I've only performed the song to an audience once before, but I love doing it. I can only dream of doing as great a job as Glenn , though.

To all of you, I just wish you could have been there to share the experience with me.

Before I go, I'd like to share the following bit of news with you as well: last Saturday (5 January), when I went to a restaurant with a bandmate and some of his friends, we decided to go to another restaurant/pub around the corner later in the evening to check out the band playing there. It turned out to be a duo (part of the resident band): a lady on lead vocals and a gent playing lead guitar and managing the pre-recorded backing tracks. My bandmate and friend knows the lead singer, and told her that we play together in the band. She then asked me to do a couple of songs (I actually think her voice was taking some strain and she welcomed the break, although it didn't sound like it). I ended up doing two Creedence Clearwater Revival songs, "Proud Mary" and "Have You Ever Seen The Rain?"

When the lady took to the stage again, she picked up an acoustic guitar to do a specific song. My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw the make of guitar: a Takamine! Not only that, but it looked almost identical to the one Glenn  plays on "The Girl From Yesterday" in HFO!

When she finished the song, I wasted no time in asking her where she bought the guitar, as I've never seen one in any of our local music stores (okay, I don't get around that much  ). She said it wasn't her's, but her partner said that one of the members of the band not present had bought it. I asked her if she was familiar with the Eagles (she's a young lady, in her 20s), and she responded that she loved them! I explained that Glenn  Frey plays one almost identical in "Hell Freezes Over" (I couldn't say HFO, LOL), and then she asked me if I knew how to sing her favourite song, "Take It Easy". I nodded. She then asked if I could play it. I nodded. She got so excited and asked if I would play it. I said "yes", as long as she gave me an acoustic guitar and a plectrum. She then handed me the Takamine! Her partner was a bit unsure of the song as he hadn't played it in a long time, but I ended up performing the song, and dedicated it not only to her, but to Glenn  as well! The small group of people gathered really seemed to enjoy it.

Needless to say, that little event absolutely made my week! :D :D :D

Wow, MF, what a thrill to play Take It Easy on a Takamine guitar, and how nice to be asked to play those other songs as well. It sounds like a great evening. I've just been reading about your marathon New Year's Eve gig as well. It sounds as if it went really well, and I liked hearing how you played Wild Mountain Thyme for the Irish lady. Those are lovely pictures of you playing. 30 degrees that evening! I wish it was that hot here. Today it is 4 degrees and raining.

Sorry to hear about all the 'strange weather' you've all been having. We've only had a couple of frosts this winter, and now that the days are getting longer the birds seem to think it's spring and have started their dawn chorus already.

EF, good news about your check-up. :)

Yes I used to yank out the badger bits as well! But eventually they just got too much! So its out of a bottle now.

Here's a question for you MF. Can you remember what date I got my colour in last....?

What a lovely picture of you and your kids, GA! :D :D

I'm blonde but changed the color to brunette. Most people do it vice versa.

GA, what a lovely picture! Thanks for sharing.

I'm kind of a blonde/red-head (strawberry blonde, I guess it's called) and I darkened my hair for years, as you did, Michaela.

But recently I realized that:
1. Darkening my hair wasn't making me any smarter
2. That darn gray was making re-appearing faster than I wanted

so, I've given up and embraced my blondeness. I don't think I'll ever embrace the gray, though.

LOL, DF! My errant hairs also stick out sometimes, but it makes it that much easier to yank them out! :D

I tried that at first, but if I had kept that up, I would be practically bald by now! :D
I don't think I will ever embrace my gray hair either.

On men, however, gray looks pretty good--Don's graying temples come immediately to mind here. 8)

And Mrs F--since you asked--here is my picture, holding my daughter's guitar, that I copied from the New Kid forum--sorry it is sideways but I still don't know how to turn pictures in photobucket:

great pics DF and GAN. Isn't it great to put faces to the names at last?

As for hair color, I grew up a blonde, then it darkened and I hated it so I went red. I still love it red but it tends to wash out too fast so I've kind of given up on it. I do get the stray grey hair now and then but so far I seem to have my Mom's genes as even at 85 she isn't very grey......crossing my fingers!

That's really nice! How I envy all you lucky people with dark hair! ;)

Are you blonde, FP? I envy you! :jealous:

Hmmm... I think I need to see more pictures of members on this Board... hint hint...

I'm a redhead. The inevitable question that I am always asked is 'what do you put in your hair to make it that colour'? I've never coloured it.

Regarding posting photos, I don't do that. Maybe one day but believe me you are not missing anything.

Even sideways you look very well DF. Do you play guitar yourself?
My sister is 'Strwberry Blonde' and has never had to colour her hair. Its possible my son will be as well. He is kinda blonde having been reddish for his first year.

Well, DF, looking at your picture, I don't think you have much to worry about concerning your hair colour! You are a lovely and elegant looking lady. I remember seeing your picture in the New Kid In Town forum not long after I joined the Board. I agree with you about grey on men - I have a very good looking 50-year-old friend who is almost completely grey, but who is more attractive now than he was as a younger man.

As for your sideways picture, I think I can help you out. How's this?

By the way, have I told you how much I like your Don signature? He looks so vulnerable and lovely there... Aww, I just want to give him a hug.

Well, that's your prerogative, FP. It took me a long time too before I felt comfortable enough to post a picture of myself. I feel fine about it, though. I think you're probably being far too modest, though, regarding my "not missing anything"!

Well thank you, MF - all I can say is that it's about time somebody straightened DonFan out! Actually, she is a very lovely lady in spite of the fact that she's tall.

I know, I know - next to me everyone is tall, even Molly. Even though I appreciate all of your pics that you are posting, I haven't been inclined to post any of myself. I said in the past, if I ever manage to get a picture of myself with any of the Eagles that is presentable, I may make an exception.

Lol, dreamer!

DF, that's a lovely picture of you. Can you play that guitar?

GA, I missed the lovely picture of you and your family on the last page. Thanks for showing us. It's so nice to picture what people are like here.

As far as hair goes, I'm what I describe as mouse blonde. I've never coloured it, although I have thought about highlights. Now the boys can look down on me (well, most people can actually!), they are pointing out my grey hairs, but so far they blend in with the mouseness.

DF, that's a lovely picture of you. Can you play that guitar?

Thanks, GEF. No, I can't--wish I could though! I play a little piano. Last year one of my New Years' Resolutions was to start playing piano again, so I bought some Eagles sheet music on ebay. One afternoon I was hard at work, practicing, and I could hear my daughters talking in the next room. It went something like this:

Daughter one: "Mom is dusting the piano again."
Daughter two: "No, she is actually playing something. Does that sound a little bit like Desperado to you?"

Ha! You should be proud, DF, that the daughter actually knew the name of an Eagles song!

LOL DF! Whenever I try to play anything my son usually wants to 'join in'!

Tomorrow I have a day off, for an appointment with the dentist. She wants to pull out 2 teeth and then I'll get an interim dental bridge for at least 8 weeks. I'm a bit afraid about it. :( Hopefully all goes well without any pains.

Yikes, EF! Good luck with that.

I hate the dentist just about as much as the gynecologist! :nervous:

Oh EF! you're really going through some wars at the moment! Good luck tomorrow. When I went to get a root canal done last year I was a bit worried it would be painful as I'd heard some horror stories. I took 2 ponstan about 20 mins before the appointment and it went fine! You could try that. I think the painkillers dentists use nowadays are pretty powerful anyway so hopefully you won't suffer any pain at all. Good luck!

I hate the way some people get a kick out of describing how painful a medical or dental procedure will be, particularly when they know you are about to have that procedure

Just got back home from the dentist. My mouth is still numb. I have to take antibiotics because when she pulled out one tooth the maxillary sinus remained open. It could cause inflammation. So she stitched the wound. I have no idea if you understand what I mean, I don't know these medical words in English. No trouble with the other tooth. No pain so far just the bridge feels strange in my mouth. No idea if I can eat with that. :?
Tomorrow I go once more to check all again.

GA, what is ponstan? :?

Thanks GA. She gave me painkiller, just in case.

DF, thank God, no pains yet. I guess I need to get used to this dental bridge. I just tried to eat something what is soft and it worked. But I was not really chewing.

I'm still annoyed at what was happening to us Keith fans today. For those who doesn't go to the Keith section you should this time. I'm nosy what you have to say to this disaster. :? That would never happen here.
