as much as I love the eagles, i gotta say that these guys are right up there. one of my dreams would be to see them live, but i just checked out their live dvd "live from chicago" and its pretty cool

lots of bonus footage, classics like "fly like an eagle," and "take the money and run."

any fans out there? have you checked out the dvd?

I was a fan of Steve Miller back in the 70s and I have the Greatest Hits on my iPod. My favourites are Fly Like An Eagle & The Joker. I don't think they ever came out here (neither has Bob Seger, to my disappointment).

Love the Steve Miller Band! He gets a lot of airplay here and has performed here often since he's a hometown boy! Born in Milwaukee and attended college in Madison, Wisconsin.

Did you know his godfather is Les Paul? Les Paul is from Waukesha, WI (near Milwaukee) and the Millers and the Pauls were friends from what I have always read.

I'm a Steve Miller band fan, too. I just happened to catch some of this show on our local pbs station last week. It was great.

As a matter of fact, The Joker is me and hubby's "our song"! It seemed to always be playing on his '67 Chevelle SS' radio back in the day.

I am also a fan. We saw the Steve Miller Band last year when they came to Birmingham's annual summer music fest, City Stages, and they rocked.

Add me to the list of Steve Miller fans. Love 'The Joker' of course but also a big fan of 'Abracadabra'. Would love to see the band play.

I don't know much about Steve Miller, although what I've heard I've liked. There is a song on Paul McCartney's 1997 album, "Flaming Pie", that features a duet with Steve Miller. It's a blues song called "I Used To Be Bad", and as far as I know, the featured guitar solo was done by Steve, and I'm mad about it.

I'm also a SMB fan. Keep On Rocking Me Baby is one of my favorites. It's kind of in a tie with The Joker. But when me and the little one are singing songs together that aren't Eagles, Rocking is one of the ones she likes to sing best.

That is a very cool song, Becky. I was trying to remember yesterday when I posted about this subject, what the song was that I liked so much, and just couldn't get to its title. Thanks for putting me out of my misery! :D

Same here. I find I have a love/hate relationship with SMB. I either LOVE some songs (Jet Airliner, Swingtown, etc.) or HATE them (Fly Like An Eagle, The Joker).

I love when musicians share their skills with the next generation.

"Miller is now on the board at Jazz at Lincoln Center where he teaches students, urging the young jazz musicians to compose their own pieces, a lost art in the genre that has relied for decades on standards."

I saw Steve perform a concert of standards with the University of Miami jazz band and chorale a few years ago, but I totally missed his Jazz Roots concert a few months ago - and Jimmie Vaughn was performing with him! Arrrggghhh.

I never knew that Steve Miller played Jazz!

I like his mid/late 70s albums, but like many artists, I've sort of lost track of him. I did go through his more recent albums on Spotify, and they are good albums. But, I prefer Fly Like An Eagle and Book of Dreams. I'm also partial to Recall The Beginning - A Journey From Eden.

(After a bit of googling): The Steve Miller Band recorded their first album in the UK with Glyn Johns? Sounds familiar somehow. :)

Playing Recall The Beginning ... now. I even like the cheesiness of 'Enter Maurice'.

He was just here 2 days ago, and I enjoy SMB, but we had already bought quite a few tickets this summer, so we skipped this one.
I like Fly Like An Eagle. ;-) (Too easy?)

Too obvious! :) Yeah, I've heard his later albums but still gravitate to the happy songs of my youth, especially "Rock'N Me" - it's such a great guitar sound! Very clean and percussive.

Johns recounts this in his book, Sound Man. Mr. Johns has quite an impressive resume.

I used to think the Steve Miller Band were huge. I was kind of surprised they opened for the Eagles. I more or less lost track of them after Abracadabra.

As far as songs go, my friend and I would giggle at the lines, "really like your peaches, want to shake your treeee." We had a lot of peach trees where I grew up. "Take the Money and Run" is also a favorite.

Steve Miller gets a lot of play time on stations in my area, which I do not mind. My favorites are "Jungle Love" and "Rock 'N Me".

Holy cow, Dawn! Wooh!! Did you talk to Mr. Miller at all? I heard he got married again fairly recently.

Apparently he's a very low-key fellow. I remember reading a blog by someone who was at a party and thought nothing of it when this ordinary-looking guy with his wife sat down and introduced himself as Steve Miller - it's such a common name. It was only later when someone broke out an acoustic guitar and they took turns singing that the blogger realized, "Holy crap, it's THAT Steve Miller!"

Oh yes, turns out Miller and I have a very special friend in common. I remember talking to him about his setlist and he shared with us the backstory on a couple of the songs. He is very nice, kinda quiet and laid back. The guy friends I was with brought cigars for after the show which they smoked on his tour bus. There was one other wife besides me. (His wife was not there but she could have been staying in the casino hotel. I don't know anything about his personal life. This was about 5 years ago)

Wow Dawn, very cool !
I have always liked the Steve Miller Band. I will have to make it a point to listen to them again as it has been many years since I played a cd/album of his.

Steve had some good music. I've played a good bit of it over the years in cover bands. Jet Airliner (I always LOVED the "funky sh!t going down in the city" line), Rock N' Me, Take The Money And Run, Fly Like An Eagle, Jungle Love, etc. Great.

Steve uses a Strat through a Dr. Z (if that sounds familiar, that's Joe Walsh's amp of choice) amp and some effects (delay for "Eagle", boost for solos, etc).

I recently bought a Dr. Z, plugged in my Strat and played Rock N' Me, and went 'yup, there it is". Before that he was a Fender amp guy, which I am as well. Cool.

Also, the song Jet Airliner had one of my first misheard lyrics I remember from when I was younger. "Big ol' Jed had a light on"...bahahaha. I love that one.
