Thank you, I'll see if I can do that. I'm beginning to see why the guy wants $200. I wish he had put the cassettes on CDs in the first place.

AzE: hang in there. Folks'll get you straightened out with that DVD. I've never worked with that file format.

I did a really stupid thing this past Friday. Verna and I went "up north" to the Casinos up there. The first one we come to is the only one that has a hotel and we stay there overnight. But I don't play there at all...too rich for my blood! So, I'm dropping Verna off to go check into the hotel while I go to the gas station to pick up some Indian Tobacco (no, not the wacky stuff <LOL>)

As I was coming out of the gas station, Verna calls to tell me she is ready to be picked up. I had ten cartons of smokes, a cell phone to my ear talking to Verna and was trying to sign my credit card receipt and negotiate the doors. When I got to the car, I almost dropped the cell phone trying to get the trunk of the car opened and managed to hang onto it and get it stuck into a pocket.

I went to the hotel, picked Verna up and headed on north to a casino that I do play at. I noticed when about 20 miles up the road, that I didn't have my cell phone! Verna called it and it rang in her handset, but there was no sound of my distinctive (Black Dog) ring inside the car! She tried calling it again and it went straight to voicemail!

A couple of hours later, my daughter calls Verna and said that she just got the weirdest phone call. Some guy in Lawrence had called her on my phone saying he had found it at the gas station. We'd called the gas station and the hotel and asked them to be on the lookout for the phone in case someone turned it in.

Odd thing was that the guy didn't just turn it in where he found it! Lawrence, Kansas is maybe 25 miles away from Topeka....in the WRONG DIRECTION for us! He didn't want to mail the phone to me even though I offered a reward and offered to pay shipping. He said he'd just drop it off at the police substation in Lawrence. Well, he calls back and says that the Police substation is not open on weekends so "he'll just meet us at the exit of the Turnpike to Lawrence". YESH!

Verna had been checking out account for "minutes used" and they weren't moving so we figured the guy was honest....maybe not the brightest bulb in the chandelier....but then I'm not either a evidenced by the lost phone!

He did meet us, refused the compensation for trouble and I got my phone back, no worse for the wear. And maybe that extra 50 miles was just what I needed, though I can't imagine why! <LOL>

Mike-sorry, but I had a little chuckle at your expense. The way you tell the story is fantastic. Especially the "maybe not the brightest bulb in the chandelier". :hilarious: Glad you got it back tho.

I think it is just coincidence, but it was shortly after I signed the Credit Card receipt at the gas station, that some charges started showing up on our credit card monthly bill. My wife watches that account like a hawk since we do make some on-line charges with it.

We had two $10 to Skype (which I never have used) and one $40 charge that was reversed (and not by us!). We're having to have a new credit card issued and had to cancel that old one. We'd had it for 20 years and it is the only one we use! There's no problem as far as the charges go...there is no contesting it with the insurer. They have reversed the charges...pretty obviously not us.

But it has to have originated from somewhere that we have used the CC at a brick and mortar store. We only use it through PayPal for on-line purchases as well as a couple of places where we use it to pay recurring charges (like my account with GoDaddy).

That is why I am suspecting that someone got hold of the receipt or found some record at that gas station. No way to prove it of course. But that is one reason that I really am far more hesitant to use a credit card or a debit card at a store than I am to use them "on-line".

Thank you, I'll see if I can do that. I'm beginning to see why the guy wants $200. I wish he had put the cassettes on CDs in the first place.

Depending upon the format they are in, $200 is about $150 too much. IMO :-?

Good luck with it AZEF. I'm not familiar with the procedure so I don't know what is good or bad!
Mike, that was a lucky escape with the phone. Have you cancelled the credit card? Over here they don't print all the credit card numbers on your receipt so it cannot be used fraudulently if it is found by somebody else.
Willie, I'm delighted your friend is getting some leave and I do indeed hope he has a safe journey home. I remember him going. It does indeed seem like a long time.

Miss ya Lou  But I'm glad you are having fun with Helen.

Molly, I'm sorry that your gift was broken by the time it arrived. That really sucks.
I'm sorry I haven't been on much in recent weeks. I really miss not getting my daily 'fix', but I am thinking about you all.

Update on MSG Dvd's. They are all copied and will be sent very soon to those who gave me addresses. I'm sorry it has taken so long. But you WILL all get them.

And Z - amen to that. That guy is a ripping people off.

MikeA
03-10-2010, 09:45 AM
Oh, it wasn't losing the phone itself that got me all aglitter. I don't really use mine that much other than to talk with Verna and to listen to music or audio books when traveling. No, it was the damage someone who is unethical could do to us financially with calls to Africa or Australia...or that 804 area code that charges $2,400 a minute in Jamaica. Other than look through the contents on my memory card, the only thing the guy who found the phone did was to use my phone to call my daughter in an effort to find the owner ("me") of the lost phone. I was very lucky.

Then that credit card thing happened and that's caused us untold hassle as we have to change all of our automatic monthly payments we have charged to the credit card.

But then, Sunday evening after it had been raining all day long, our basement started taking on water! I've spent the last two days, about once an hour, using the shop vac to suck up soaked carpet in the basement!

I think we are just going to pull up the carpet in the main part of the basement. It's gone through several soakings and I'm sure that it has taken on a life of its own (mildew, mold, creepy microscopic critters!). Besides, that will make it easier to vac with a squeegy attachment.

I recon we will "paint" it with some of that sealing paint such as is used on garage floors to maybe stop some of the seepage and to make it look a little better. On a positive note, all that bare concrete should make for some interesting sound effects for recording! <LOL>

My friend Helen left an hour or so ago, so I'm just relaxing this evening and catching up with the Border happenings! We had a lovely few days. A quick update - I rearranged my operation for after I come back from the States. To cut a long story short, I was worried about the upcoming trip, and the possibility (however slight) that I would still be sore by then, or worse, that I could get an infection. I know it would probably have been okay, but I couldn't risk anything ruining this holiday! I had a chat with the nurse over the phone and explained my concerns. She couldn't tell me much about recovery time or how long it would actually take to heal and said it would probably be sensible to postpone it, to put my mind at ease. Plus, I will be on a bank contract in the summer, so it will be easier to have my operation when I return, without worrying about taking more time off work. It was better all round. She said I will have no difficulty in getting an appointment in June or July. Thanks for all your thoughts anyway. I'll need 'em in the summer! :)

Troub, so glad to hear you had a nice visit with your friend Helen!
I think you were wise to postpone the operation til after your trip to the US-like you said, you wouldn't want to still be healing when you come over. Having it in the summer sounds like a good idea to me!

I think it was a good decision to postpone the operation! Only not take risks in front of your U.S. trip! Even if the risk is still so small!

Lou, I'm glad that you had a good time with Helen and that things are sorted out for your operation. I'm sure that whenever you have it done everything will be okay. You know that we here all support you and are wishing all the best with this.

Mike, thank goodness you got your phone back. Good, honest people like that are very rare in this world. I would've been freaking out if I lost my phone. I've got mine with me about 95% of the day.

Well, like GA, I have really missed my daily fix of The Border. I'm really going to do my best to get on here more often. Work has been getting pretty busy lately and I've had to stay late a lot. Staying late sucks but at least that means there will be a little bit more money on the paycheck. I've been spending more time with my family lately. Tomorrow (March 11) is my mom's birthday so i'm back in my hometown to celebrate with her. Dad and I are having some roses and balloons sent to her office and then tomorrow evening (along with my brother, his wife, and my niece Natalie) we will take her out for a nice dinner. Mom is going to be 55 and she's actually really excited about being a senior citizen. She told me that now on her lunch breaks she can go to the Senior Citizen's Center and get lunch for free. I'm glad that she's looking at the positive things about being another year older.

Okay, wish me luck on this everybody....I just put in for an earlier shift at work. Right now I work the late swing shift (8pm-4am) but I just put in for the 4pm-Midnight shift. I know that a lot of my co-workers put in for earlier shifts as well but I also know that I have a decently good chance to get it. I just got my yearly evaluation and had high marks in all categories so I hope that whoever is making the final decision will take that into consideration along with my reliability. My good friends Christi and her hubby put in for the same shift and we are hoping that the 3 of us get picked for this earlier shift. It would be so great to go to bed at a decent hour and to be able to get more things done in the daytime rather than sleeping while the sun is shining. I've been working this schedule for only a year and a half and it is taking it's toll. I'll find out this weekend if we get it or not. My fingers are crossed.

I don't think it'll be much of a change as far as my tokes go. We do share tokes but we share by a 24 hour period so my pay shouldn't change much if at all if my shift changes. One thing to look forward to if I do get go to 4-Midnite is I won't have to deal the drunks as much. Although I have learned how to handle and deal with the crazy drunks, it's not something I want to do every single night at work. Some of the drunks can get out of hand but thankfully i've never been on those kind of tables. I've been lucky enough (i'm knocking on wood right now) to have only been directly cussed at twice and even still those 2 guys that cussed at me said it under their breath. I've also been called a brat by a drunk lady but she apologized and tipped me $5.

GOS--Glad to see you back!! Hope everything is calming down for you a bit now. You have a long haul ahead the way it sounds.

I'm a bit excited today. Dillon is coming home this afternoon for spring break. Haven't seen him since the end of Christmas break. He's been so busy at school and is doing so well. He has made it into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Phi Eta Sigma/Alpha Lambda Delta, both organizations are for the top 20%. He went back to being Vegan again when he went back to school after his last break. He had lost some weight from all the walking and eating better before, but since he went to school in August, he has lost 45 lbs.. which sounds extreme but he is a very big man, well over 6 foot and big bodied. We told him he's doing everything backwards for a freshman---you're suppose to struggle with your grades and gain the "freshman 15".

Good luck, Stars!

Willie, it's amazing to see how much they change during college. Peter is almost unrecognizable. He went off as a freshman in t-shirts and ripped jeans. And now, he's wearing Calvin Klein shirts and actually putting gel in his hair! He's lost about 30 lbs. since football ended. He still eats more than I thought humanly possible.

He just had a birthay a few weeks ago and his dad and I just gave him money for a gift. Normally, that cash in hand would have meant a trip to Best Buy to blow every penny of it, but this year he put it towards a nice tailored suit to wear to job interviews.

He just had an interview with Northwestern Mutual Insurance. When he told me about it, my first thought was, "Didn't Glenn do a private solo show in Milwaukee for NW Mutual a few years ago?"

Your friend was only in the 40 's, that was early! Several doctors have told me that I need a knee replacement, but I'm still too young (31) for that! So I have a few more years to wait until I get one!

If you need the surgery, age shouldn't be the determining factor. It'll only get worse as you get older. For your sake and especially the physical comfort, get it done if that's what your heart tells you. The doctors don't have the pain so how can they tell you when to have the surgery. I wish you luck and wish you well.

You're right, that the age should play no role! Other hand, I can understand it somehow, than the knee replacement, because of the strong charges it hold not so long ( yet), how e.g. an artificial hip joint. One would have to renew them every 15 to 20 years! And quite honestly I do not know if I want to endure this procedure more than once , because it is not very a simple procedure! I hope a few more years without a knee replacement and that the replacement in that time can developed so that it holds longer!

Then I am having lunch with one friend and meeting another one for coffee this afternoon. Apparently the people I used to work with actually miss me

The other first sign of spring for me is coming up this weekend. I am headed to the cabin with Rhonda and her family. Yay!! I am so excited. I love it up there and the weather is supposed to be cooperative so that makes it even better :blueblob:

Also on the risk to go you on your nerves!
Today I was with the doctor, We have committed ourselves to undergo an arthroscopy on the knee! Probably the meniscus been damaged now(This is new, the meniscus was one of few things in the knee were still healthy)! Whether anything else was damaged, you can not say yet we'll see. The date for the operation I get tomorrow, he may be next week or not until 2 or 3 weeks.

Hey Cami...Y'all Rock-Out up there! Wish we were closer to "coming alive" time of the year. It is supposed to get into the 60*s Thursday, but then there is a chance of more snow Friday night <sigh>. Sick of this mess!

Koala, I've been reading all that about your knee. I feel your pain! I haven't had it done, but I have a brother-in-law and a couple of cousins that have had to have the surgery. The BIL is going to have to have another surgery (both knees eventually). They just aren't holding up as long as they'd hoped. He was terribly overweight when he first had the surgery, but has lost close to 150 pounds now and is a better candidate.

Happy St. Patrick's Day everybody!

Have fun, Rhonda and Cami! And I ADORE your holiday photo, Rhonda!

Today I had a little bit of excitement. My plane had landed at Indianapolis and after it parked at the gate, we passengers all got up, got our bags out of the overheard compartments, and stood in the aisle waiting to deplane.

Suddenly, we heard the pilot bark "Get back into your seats immediately. Keep your bags with you."

We all looked at each other, mystified. The pilot repeated the instructions curtly and we all shoved ourselves back into our seats.

Then, three armed policemen boarded the plane. One stood at the door while the other two hurried towards the back. They got a guy out of his seat and handcuffed him, then led him out along with his bag.

After they left, we were allowed to deplane. I tried to find something about it on the news, but to no avail.

While I did sit near the guy in the terminal before boarding the plane, at least I wasn't really near him in the plane. I feel sorry for whoever it was that realized they'd been sitting next to a fugitive for the past hour and a half!

Mike, wow your BIL lost 150 pounds, not bad! Is better for the whole health and not only for the knees!

Ok, now I have my surgery date. I am operated on April 1. and hopefully come back home at the same day! The stupid thing is that on this day starts my vacation (school holidays), I will be written ill in my vacation! That I can take the vacation at an other time is very unlikely, because there no possibility the vacation to make during at schooltime, because we work only in twos and one of us is on the move always (at another school or he gives any course), there is no representation!

Nancy, good grief! Scary!

I'm off this afternoon and for the rest of the weekend to Columbia for the State Basketball Finals. Our girls play at 5 tonight and depending on whether they win or lose will play again either Friday or Saturday night. My husband absolutely loves this and will watch nearly every game possible for the next 3 days! (He also loves March madness on tv!) Thankfully, there is a great mall there and I will be shopping during the off times with friends and family. I think our little town will be deserted since everyone will be going to the games!

Wish our Lady Mustangs good luck! :partytime:

Koala, I wish you all the best with your surgery. Glad you didn't have to wait too long.

Nancy, glad your experience on the plane wasn't anything worse. Still, it is unsettling.

I went for my second session of vestibular physio therapy yesteray. I got to play Wii! This could be fun ;). I have balance & core strengthening exercises to do everyday :-(. I've always found it difficult to stay with an exercise routine but I'll have to summon up my willpower because I've got to stay with this. The therapist says that back to work is way down the road. They are just concentrating on improving my quality of life at this point. I'm remaining hopefull that this therapy will help.

Well, it wasn't really nerve shattering since they handled it pretty easily, but as GL said, it was unsettling! The pilot must not have known ahead of time - otherwise, why not just tell us to remain in our seats after we landed instead of waiting until we all got up and got our stuff out of the overhead bins before telling us to sit back down?

Maybe this should be going into the GearHead thread. Nah. It's not really about anything to do directly with music gear.

I have order all the components to do a build for My Father In Law. This is the first fresh build I've done and am really looking forward to it. He needs a new computer...one with up to date components and a processor that he can't outrun....He's 83 or so and he can outrun the two computers he has now so that tells you how old the computers are <LOL>

He doesn't need killer speeds with overclocked CPUs to drive dual or quad Super fast Graphics cards. He needs something that will let him run all over the Internet with as many tabs opened as he has the energy to click on, maybe to simultaneously run WinAmp, carry on a YIM conversation and maybe have a Word Processor running.

For that, He needs MEMORY....and I'm putting in two sticks of 2gb DDR3 memory....fast stuff and Four Gig is all that a 32 bit OS can handle.

Speaking of OS and CPUs...I'm putting in a Dual Core AMD 3.0Ghz processor. I'm going with 32-bit Win7 for the OS. I would have gone with a 64-bit OS were the system for me, but because I was afraid of driver issues this early in Win-7's life...I chose the 32 bit version for him. I'm ordering OEM OS so I don't get both versions with the purchase...but I got it for $104 rather than $179 or what ever it is retailing for.

I'm putting in a 500gb Seagate Baracuda 7200rpm disk drive. That should hold him for a long time. I'm also putting in a DVD/CD burner so he should be in good shape for all that stuff.

Don't need a sound card or video card with the BioStar mobo I'm getting for him. They have acceptable sound and graphics.

Now, as for his "old Win 2000" OS computer....I'm going to strip it completely of anything that would let him get out on the Internet. That will pretty much eliminate any need for AntiVirus. The only thing I'll have on it is the OS, Audacity and the components it needs, and the drivers for any hardware he has plugged in.

I'm thinking that If I need to install anything on the "old" computer I can download it to the "new" one and do the antivirus routines on it and then copy it to a flash drive and install to the "old" computer from that. There really shouldn't be anything like that needful though. All he'll be using the old computer for is recording music and with NOTHING ELSE going on, I think it will fill his needs.

Koala, good luck to you too, with your knee problems.

I'm back home earlier than expected. The Lady Mustangs lost their first game Thursday night. :-( They played hard, but just didn't get it all together. That meant we played last night for 3rd and WE WON! :yay: We had a much better game and were happy to get at least one win at State. Everyone here is very proud of them. Two trips to State in two years (and more than likely we'll go again next year because we don't lose any key players.) is something to be proud of.

WELL, we're back. The cabin was beautiful as always. Everything there is about 2 weeks behind us here as far as spring goes but Saturday it was soo beautiful! Friday even! Getting there we had the air conditioner running cuz it was so warm! The thermometer at the cabin said it was in the 80s both days, but it cools off fast at night. Saturday morning it looked for all the world as if it had snowed, but it was just the morning frost. By 10am it was warm enough for tank tops and jeans. Poor Cami woke up looking not so good and feeling awful. She was sick as a dog all day. She spiked a fever by 6pm but took some tylanol and was soon looking and feeling better that night. What ever she had must have been a 12 hour thing, because she was bright eyed and bushy tailed the next day. UNFORTUNATELY, our weather must have gotten the bug cuz it rained alll day and it was cold! We spent the day watching movies and playing games, reading and taking short walks between the down pours. Monday, my nieces boy friend woke up with the Cami Crud and was feeling pretty awful. It was raining again so we decided to pack it in. Good thing too, because we got home just in time for Jenni and her friend to BOTH get the big CC... I kind of think Sarah and I had the same thing a while back, so Im hoping we'll miss it. The best thing we can say about it is it's short lived. At least we got a few hours of really great sunshine and we'll be going back very soon.

Happy Birthday to your "baby" and sis, Molly.

I've been debating on something over the past few days and I still can't decide what to do. It's not something serious or anything but still I'd like to hear some other opinions. One of my many supervisors has asked for a friend request on Facebook. Now, I've got plenty of coworkers and a few of my supervisors as friends on FB but these are people that I talk at work a lot and hang out with outside of work. This particular supervisor is the #2 guy in charge of my shift. And since my boss/shift supervisor has moved on to another casino, this #2 guy is temporarily in charge until the big bosses name a new swing shift supervisor. This guy is nice and all and some of my coworkers hang out with him outside of work (going to bars and such) but I just don't feel like being in that clique. I'm needing to take off a lot of days at the end of next month and i need this guy to approve my requested days off. So, do I add him and be buddies with him like many of my coworkers or do I just hit the ignore button and hope that I get the days off that I need? I mean, I like the guy and I'm sure he'll be able to work with me about my days off next month but I just really don't like the idea of having one of my bosses as a friend on FB and I have a feeling that it would be easier to get these days off if I was friends with him like some of my coworkers.

Molly - I'm glad to hear Donna's still in remission. She's certainly fought hard. I hope her birthday as well as Tom's was full of happiness.

Peek - hard decision, and one of the perils of FB. At first, it's fun to share stuff about your life on there. Then, your co-workers add you... your sisters... your Mom... and all of the sudden you have to make everything PC.

You don't have to hit "ignore." You can just leave it there and your supervisor will see the friend request status as "pending." If he asks you about it, you can say you just haven't around to checking your friend requests lately.

Jess, where I work, a policy has actually recently been put into place warning employees of being careful when participating in social websites. We've been told that if the workplace is discussed in negative fashion and in such a way that other people can identify the company we work for by our posts-we can be terminated. In other words, big brother is surfing the internet.

While your employer may not be doing that -it seems weird to me that a supervisor would want to "friend" his/her employees. I think it would make me nervous. You'd certainly have to be very careful going forward with your posts.

Yeah, I've heard/read similar stories like that (and like the one EL mentioned) but there hasn't been any kind of policy or announcement like that where I work. It's almost like everybody is friends with everybody at work and on FB. I have coworkers that I am really good friends with at and outside of work but I also have coworkers that I consider to be just "work friends". It does make me feel a bit uneasy to "friend" one of my bosses on there and I don't want to be all uncomfortable about logging on to FB when it should just be a fun place log on like it has been.

Lisa, I'm praying for your Dad & wishing him a speedy recovery!

Brooke, glad your sister is still in remission. Happy birthday to both her & your son!

Peek, I agree that sometimes the spectrum of friends on FB can become too wide. I wouldn't be comfortable adding a boss who wasn't actually a friend. Nancy's idea of just not responding to the request is a good one. I was looking at my friend list today & there were more "friend request pending" than I realized, some of them a few months old. Most of these people don't go on FB very often & I think some of them have just haven't seen the request, but it's certainly not unusual to have unanswered requests. Also, personally I don't post anything on FB that I don't care if everybody knows. If I just want one or two people to know I send them a private message. I know that there are many who never post who still look at my wall, because I have met many of my "friends" who have commented about something on my wall or the games I play & I have never seen them post. Good luck with your decision.

By the way, I won't be at all offended if you ignore my "friend request". I know that everybody sets their own boundaries. :)

On that Facebook thing....If I recognize the name on a friend request, I'll usually add it. I had the issue with the boss too. My boss, her children and about a hundred others who I've either worked with or knew from the 40 years with this company. But when it got to the point of people who just knew people I knew, I drew the line.

It really can be an Invasion of Privacy!

As it is, I don't want to log in during the day because it time stamps me and sends up red flags that I am not working. That's not true. Our work computers have sites like Facebook blocked so that we can't access them....and for people who work in offices on the campus CAN'T access through work computers. But I have three other computers on-line in my house BESIDES my work computer and one or more are on all the time. So I just stay off of Facebook.

Then at night, I'm usually checking nothing but eMail and maybe the Border here. I've always had this problem with computers on-line for personal use compared to computers at work because I was working on personal computers LONG before the company ever though about using them for workstations!

But not really using Facebook doesn't really deprive me of much. Most of the stuff that shows up on my Facebook is like "RowdeyRoy13 just poked out someone's eye in Pirates of the Caribbean" or "Someone Else's chicken just laid an egg in Farmer John's Farm in Downtown Detroit".

On the other hand, it has put me in contact once more with some of the folks I graduated from high school with...almost 50 years ago! LOL...I didn't hang out with them back then and don't now either. When I wasn't in school, I was either working or out with some girl from another school and where we went, we weren't likely to run into anyone from ANYWHERE! At least, we hoped we wouldn't!

Jess- you know you can have control of what certain people see also on there. Like my son, the big college boy, has all of us as friends but only allows us to see certain things that he post and certain status', "because we don't need to know everything he does in college". Not quite sure how but if you look into....that way you can add him and not have any bad feelings that way but he's none the wiser on everything you may post.

Today is Harold's (my hubby) last day of work, retiring after almost 36 years, so this will be quite a change for us. I am actually looking forward to having him home more. Despite our disagreements, we enjoy each other's company and are each other's best friends. A small part of the reason he retired is so that he could look after me on the days I can't get my own meals & to chauffeur me on days that I have doctor's appointments & can't drive. It also means though that on my good days we can be spontaneous & do things we haven't been able to do! He's still out celebrating with some coworkers so I will have to wait a bit to hear the details of the "fun day" that his boss said was in store for him today! I think it was as PM and GL have said she would probably not be here without my grandpa! I am very glad that it gone so fast and that she has not, who knows how long lain in a coma!

It really helps to think that she is again with my grandpa together!
now, I have a big problem, if I can't shift my knee operation, I can't go to the funeral of my grandma, both should to be held on the same day!!! That is not good, I would properly like to be able to say goodbye to her! I know it gives later still the urn funeral but with that I had big problems by my grandpa! And there I could go afore to the other funeral!

Sounds like my father. He is 76 years old and he will never really retire. While my brother has taken over more of the day to day stuff in their concrete business my father still works several days a week there and when he is not working there he is working on the ranch he and his wife bought a couple years ago. For my Pop to not work would be to lose his identity and become an old man. And as long as he is healthy and happy we (and his wife) have given up on ever expecting him to slow down.

Oh Koala. I am so sorry about your dear Grandma. This must be a very difficult time for you and your family, but its good that she went peacefully and did not have to miss your Grandad for too long. I have heard of this often, where one elderly person goes and the partner goes soon after as well. But it must be like the end of an era for your family. Of course I will pray for them and the rest of your family.

Put off the knee, it can wait.

Ann, I hope you and your hubby have many happy years of retirement ahead of you. Enjoy it to the full.

Well Dad finally had his surgery late on Wednesday afternoon. Physically he seems to be doing very well and has started on his physio.

Mentally however he is still very confused. Several times he thinks he is in other places, (Belfast, Birmingham, Germany, interestingly enough all places where the company he worked for had offices) then gets very agitated and worried as to how he is going to get 'home' . He also told me yesterday that they had a big party in the ward, that he had a large glass of wine and that he bought 18 pints. (he rarely drinks). We are hoping that this is as a result of the painkillers and that it will wear off with time.
Once again thanks to everybody for all your kind thoughts, prayers and wishes for him. :grouphug: As everybody says, the support network here is second to none.

Awww, thanks you are all so nice, thanks that you all in this difficult time there for me, this helps me a lot! :grouphug:
She did not have to suffer and now she is there again where she wanted to be, at my Grandpa, this is a great consolation!
Tomorrow I'll talk to the doctors, I hope we find a good solution!
You are right GA, my knee can wait, the funeral is more important! My knee hurts already so long, that it comes a few days more or less not more.

GA I hope your Dad feel better soon, particularly mentally, the physically comes with the physio.

So, all you got to do is have a hip replaced to get to feel as good as your Dad? Hmmm, my hip is hurting more and more every day now!

Enough with the bad humor! It does sound as though he is doing well at this point and I'm sure that he will be up a motivating all over the place very soon.

I've got the makin's of a great country song! My son broke up with a girl he's been going with for 3 years last week, got all depressed over it and then Thursday night, his car broke down! The car is a pile of junk now...perfect body, transmission, interior, but smokes like an oil refinery...the rings in the engine practically don't exist. The repair to get it running again (sans engine ring job) wasn't that expensive but he was told that the motor could blow at any time. He just got it paid off last year and now is looking at having to buy a new car. The engine work to get the car back in reliable shape would be upwards of $4,000 (US) and it just wouldn't be worth it. Not with the likelihood of other things going bad in an 8 year old car. No matter what he does to it, it will be worth nothing in trade either now or after the engine replacement.

Now, I ought to be able to come up with lyrics for a good tear-jerker with that scenario, don't you think?

Well, my Monday has started out with another rejection e-mail. I interviewed for yet another job but lost out on it to someone else. I am glad I am at least getting interviews but I really wish someone would hire me. I had to apply for my first extension on my unemployment today which gives me another 20 weeks of benefits but if this keeps up I may have to take my Aunt in California up on her offer to live with her and get a job down there for a while. I know the feeling well. Today marks exactly one year since I got laid off, resumes sent out, interviews, nothing came of it, nada, still on unemployment, still sending out resumes and applications. First time I ever had problems finding a job, guess 62 years old with near perfect attendence, 24 years on one job and over 5 on this last one, don't count for anything. No medical insurance either, good thing I'm healthy as a horse. Can't even get a job at a fast food place cuz all the kids get hired first. Glad things went better, Stars. I have the same kind of work situation...but I know these days, I just have to be grateful for the job I do have (and I buy lots of lottery tickets!).

pueblo47, my hubby and I went thru the same thing back in the early 80's-sending out resumes and nothing. We were both laid off from our jobs in September 1982 and our wedding was in October 1982. We were laid off for the entire first year of our marriage. We did any and every job we could find -we even climbed trees to pick apples - $20 for every bin we filled. And they were giant bins -it took forever just to fill up one!

Hubby saved a picture that appeared in our local newspaper. It's a picture of the 10,000 people who showed up at our local State Fair Park to fill out applications for 100 jobs that were becoming available at a local manufacturing company. He saved it because he's somewhere in that sea of humanity. And no, he didn't get a job that day.

Good luck to you on your search!

Stars, that sucks that you had a bad day the other day but i'm glad things went better for you yesterday.

Rhonda, are you feeling any better? I sure hope the Cami Crud hasn't stuck around for too long.

I've missed a lot on here and I'm trying to get caught up while I have the chance because I will again be gone for the next few days. These past few days have been tough. One of my aunts passed away on Monday. Her health started to go downhill over the last couple of years and last week she became very ill and was taken to the hospital. She was put on a ventilator but we were told that nothing could be done and the decision was made to take her off of it. My mom called me Saturday just before work to tell me the bad news and that things weren't looking too good. It was so difficult to go to work and put on a happy face and smile like everything was okay. It sucked that I was away from my family when I received the bad news but I will be with my family tomorrow. There is a prayer service tomorrow evening and the funeral is on Thursday. Saturday was supposed to be our family reunion but it was canceled once we got word about my Aunt. Although the reunion was canceled we will still get together on Saturday to have our Easter egg hunt for the young ones in the family. I think we may try to do the reunion in August during our tribes annual powwow.

I just wanted to tell y'all about a fun and wacky thing I did for April Fool's Day (no foolin'!), which happens to be my son Graham's birthday (he turned 11). My kids are off for spring break, and he mentioned he wanted to go to an aquarium for the day, so I chose the New York Aquarium since we had never been to that one. (No, that is not the wacky part.) After a significantly stressful :enraged: ride across bumper-to bumper traffic-laden Staten Island to get to Brooklyn, we discovered that the Aquarium was right next to the famous Cyclone roller coaster of Coney Island. So, after our lovely tour of the Aquarium, I figured, "Why not? I will most likely never battle that kind of traffic to come here again, so let's go for it!" And so we did! This 83-yr-old wooden coaster is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is world-renowned for its curves, drops, and all-around rickety-ness. They have about five mature men (no college-aged carnies here!) securing people in the 24 rows of seats, double- and triple-checking the safety bar. Really gets your adrenaline up right from the start! Then, off we went, round and round, up and down...I could feel my brain ricocheting around in my skull :dizzy:...literally! When the coaster arrived back in the dock, both the patrons and the employees were actually applauding! :yay: Pretty significant milestone, for a mere 8 bucks a pop!

Seriously Good News! My Brother got to "come home" yesterday! Honestly, we never thought he would ever come home! Talked to him last night and he sounded really good. He can't walk, but he has a fully adjustable hospital bed and a "Gerry Chair" that with some help he can get into and it will easily fit through the door so his wife can push him out onto the deck that wraps around about half the house.

He came home to a new dog too. It's a cross between a dachshund and a chiwawa (okay EVA, stop laughing! I know "hound" and that's about it!). What was so funny was that he was proclaiming to the WORLD that that dog was HIS. She's like 8 weeks old. They lost a dog they'd had for years while Johnny was hospitalized.

Nancy! Congratulations on your new posting. I know how hard you have worked and how much it has meant to you. You deserve it sooooo much. I really hope you will be happy in Memphis. Well done.

Koala, yes, though it is a sad time for your family it is comforting to know that your grandparents are together again for all eternity. I will keep your family in my prayers over Easter.

Mike, wonderful news about your brother.

Dad is doing well physically but is still confused and also getting very depressed. He is still in hospital and probably WILL be there for another couple of weeks. We are doing our best to keep his spirits up. Thanks for the ongoing concern.

Laura won a hugh chocolate bunny in an Easter colouring competition that a local chocolate shop (Butlers) was running. She is thrilled. We picked it up earlier.

In the hospital, money, Apartment key and a jacket was stolen from my granny! Who does something like that!

How Pathetic must one be to steal from a deceased person?

Koala, I'm so sorry about the extra pain caused to your family after your granny's possessions were stolen. Appalling.

GA, I saw that chocolate bunny, and it was flippin' enormous! I bet Laura was chuffed to bits. Has she eaten it all yet? (And have you helped her?)

Nancy, congratulations on your new job. Memphis sounds like such a cool place to settle. I envy you.

Mike, glad to hear of your brother's progress.

Koala-such a shame that things were stolen from your grandmother -but I'm also not surprised. It happens. My great-aunt had her earrings stolen right out of her ears in the nursing home. Not like a woman who was 105 years old at the time was going to fight back.

It is really a shame, how can someone steal from sick people in a hospital or from old people in a nursing home. I can't understand it!
It's not about money. But the Apartment key is the problem, it is not only a key for her Apartment it is a general key for several doors(e.g. for the basement or garage doors) now probably all need to be replaced.

ALERT!

Granddaughter to be born Friday! Amanda is doing fine though has been having some periods of high blood pressure. Drs don't want to take any chances so if she hasn't gone into labor naturally before Thursday evening, they are going to induce. Her due date is April 15, but the can't do early inducement before Thursday without medical reason and at this point, Amanda is healthy enough that she doesn't require it. Still, with her history, they don't want to take any chances, so FRIDAY at the latest!

I'll look really hard for a picture of Megan. I don't imagine I'll have too much trouble finding one (or 100)!

So a new trying, now I will have the surgery on my knee on April 22 .
I hope it works this time and it does not happen again something unpredictable.
Slowly it begins to annoy, that I still can not walk properly and the pain does not really have become better! After all was the stupid slip up already in February!

Koala, I had my knee replaced three years ago February. I waited several years to get it done but the pain finaly got so bad that I couldn't stand it anymore. At first I thought it was a BIG mistake but now I am so glad that I had it done. I not only am mostly pain free but I can walk and stand without the pain making me sick. Just do what the doctors tell you and you won't be sorry.

Nancy, Congrats on the new job and move. I bet Memphis is gonna be quite an adventure for you.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts and prayers about my aunt. The funeral was lovely and it was really nice to get to see my family again. I mentioned before that after the news of my aunt we canceled the family reunion that we had scheduled for Sat. April 3rd and, for those that could still make it, we still got together and headed to the lake for a nice relaxing afternoon. It was nice to just kick back with my family and share lots of laughs. I don't know when we'll all get together like that again but I look forward to the next go around.

Thanks for your encouraging words!

However, I'm afraid this time a bit, just a little bit, in the other 4 operations, I always knew what the doctors have done on the knee, this time not, because they do not yet know exactly what everything is broken down. This makes me a little bit nervous!I know it is not really a serious intervention is but, nevertheless....

Koala, you said your surgery was on April 22? I'll set a computer alarm and be thinking about it....be sure and let us know how it went just as soon as you can.

Tonight's the night...inducing labor on my daughter Amanda. Well, they may wait until tomorrow morning depending on "how ready" she is.

Can hardly wait! I've got this new camera and can't believe how advanced they've gotten with the tiny point and shoot format instruments. There are so many "manual settings" that let you take good photos in badly lighted conditions without a flash. My Avatar was shot with it using no flash...just room light which is florescent. My Les Paul of course <LOL> Probably the most photographed 6-string ever!

I may be taking care of Miles during the ordeal but sooner or later, I'll get to go up and get my hands on my brand new Granddaughter!

Jess, I meant to send my condolences to you in my last post here. Please accept them and rest assured that your aunt is in my prayers.

Chocolate Bunny is still intact! Laura wants to eat all her other Easter stuff before she has the heart to break up the bunny.

Dad is getting better and is more 'with it' as each day goes by. He is still in the hospital however with no immediate discharge date.l

Amanda is doing fine and so is Megan. However her doctor was so kind as to call her late yesterday afternoon and tell her that she had something she needed to do at 5pm Friday (today) so she wasn't going to induce her into labor!

They do not now know when this will happen. Certainly not before Tuesday night because the hospital is so backlogged with scheduled induced births. Shoot, she is normally due on April 15 and that's only next Thursday (I think). She could go into normal labor any time now anyway.

Probably a good thing I can't get my hands on that doctor of hers!

How frustrating for Amanda and all of you!!

This reminded me of when I was to be induced for Dillon 20 years (OMG) ago. I was to call the hospital Monday morning at 6:30 to make sure everything was a go. We were up, dressed, bag in hand and I called only to be told they didn't have room because there had been several women that went into labor overnight. I stood there, with tears running down my cheeks, screaming at the poor nurse on the other end of the phone, yelling, "what if I go into labor naturally--where will you put me-- in the damn hall?". :hilarious: I was sooooo ready to be done with that pregnancy!

Tell poor Amanda to go for a long walk followed by a long car ride over the bumpiest road in the county--maybe that will start things naturally!

MikeA
04-09-2010, 09:00 AM
Thanks Willie and Lou....she's already "taking walks" and driving around. I've told her to take liberal doses of Castor Oil as well <LOL>

The thing was that while her doctor was completely on board with inducing her, when it turned out she had some commitment at 5pm today, she called her associate to be sure she would be available to take over if Amanda hadn't delivered. Her associate was completely adament about it. She wasn't comfortable at all with inducing her where there was no medical justification charted by Amanda's tests. So, in reality it was as much the fault of the Doctor's associate as it was with the doctor who is her primary maternity doctor.

Whatever the case, it just about put Amanda over the edge emotionally. I don't need to tell any of you "Mothers" what kind of raging hormone imbalances take place right at the end, and Amanda is more prone to them than anyone I've ever known.

Brooke
04-09-2010, 10:04 AM
Shoot! I was sure you were going to tell us it was all over. Poor Amanda!

Honestly, I think they do far too much inducing these days when it isn't really necessary. But I'm probably just jealous cause I went 10 days over with my daughter (5 days with my son) and it was never mentioned. Of course that was 32 and 27 years ago, too. Rest assured, that baby will come when it's ready!

I was going to suggest the long walk up a steep hill, too. That put me in to labor! I don't know about the castor oil! I've heard of that though!

MikeA
04-09-2010, 10:12 AM
Well Brooke, I think you are right about the "over use" of inducing labor. In Amanda's case, because of preeclampsia with Miles, it was planned from early on to have her in labor under the best conditions possible. But right now, she is showing no signs of it. It would be a relief to "get it over with" while she is in such good condition and while Megan is also, but it isn't meant to be I guess.

My thought is that she will very likely say "Screw Them" and just go on into labor this weekend <LOL> without inducing it!

MikeA
04-09-2010, 10:48 AM
Here we go again! Amanda got a call from her Dr this morning and there was a cancellation Sunday night at the Hospital and Amanda is scheduled to go in at that time. Monday April 12 is the target date now.

Wow! What an emotional roller coaster your family's been on, Mike! Best of luck to Amanda!

I remember being called by my doctor at 3 pm (I was 10 days post dates with Tom) to come in within the hour as they decided they were going to induce me. There I stood with a big ole cheeseburger in my hand while I'm on the phone with the doctor thinking....Uh oh! They advise you not to eat a lot if you think you're going into labor (in case you end up needing anesthesia/surgery). Tom didn't arrive until 5 o clock the next morning anyway, via C-section.

That boy has been late and keeping us waiting around ever since.

Amanda certainly looks like she is ready. I was lucky. Laura was 11 days early and Chris 7. But just in case Amanda DOES go into labour over the weekend it could be very quick. I woke up at 5:40am on the morning that Chris was due. I felt a bit uncomfortable but NOT in labour. An hour and a half later (with NO pain relief whatsoever) he was with us.

Good luck Amanda! We are all gunning for you.

Had a bit of a scare last night (Saturday night). She called us around 7pm and said that her blood pressure had shot way up (150/100) and her doctor's associate told her that if it didn't come down withing 2 hours to go on into the hospital. She called bad a little over an hour later and said that it had come back down and stabilized so she didn't go in.

Everything is on "GO" for tonight/tomorrow.
