I am loving these articles!! Thanks so much for sharing these and finding them, too!! I totally agree about the one that pissed you off. That audience sure didn't know what was before them. Poor Randy; he deserved better!

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Thank you for finding all these snippets, even the ones that are a little negative but then that's life. Even Randy couldn't be perfect all the time but I still love him.

Both Ann and Nancy Wilson sang on Randy's 1982 album, which had the same producer (Mike Flicker) as Heart's early albums. Heart guitarist Howard Leese also played on the record and seems to have been friends with Randy since the 70s - there's a photo of them from back in the day with their arms around each other and Randy is wearing a Budmaster t-shirt.

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Just a brief mention of Randy in this March 1, 1969 Rolling Stone article on "Hollywood Hillbillies - What's Old is New Again,"
Others in the band are Randy Meisner, a Nebraska boy who plays bass and sings most of the songs demanding the highest range...

And this 2013 RS article isn't exactly retro but it's about the making of James Taylor's 1969 classic album "Sweet Baby James" and contains an even more brief mention of our Nebraska fella: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...james-20130416

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Randy's art was featured in the 1994 book "Musicians as Artists," alongside contributions from such nobodies as John Lennon and David Bowie. :) The book's authors are Jim McMullan and Dick Gautier; photographs by Stephen Stickler - who has since become a very successful rock and fashion photographer.

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Thanks for the links NightMistBlue.
A while ago I found a review of an early Pogo (Poco) live show. The reviewer singled out, bassist Randy Meisner, singing Anyway Bye Bye, as the shows undoubted highlight. I suppose it would have been on Poco's first album.
Poco, later released it with writer, Ritchie Furay on lead vocals. Randy released a cover of it, a decade or so after that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9B6mYyuhuXE
I wonder if there's a version out there somewhere, of Randy singing Anyway Bye Bye with Poco.
-
Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Wouldn't it be cool if we could find a recording of a Pogo/Poco show at the Troubadour? Randy has one; he said he listened to it before recording that version you linked to.
Do you recall where you found the early review that you read?

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
The page opposite Randy's artwork has a nice bio, and a lovely photo of Randy with one of his beloved chihuahuas

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
In the "1978 live concert" thread, I asked about the 20-30 songs I thought Randy had written with a friend. Well, I found the source!
Quote:
Around this time, Meisner received a phone call from Steve Edwards, a guitarist who had played on Randy Meisner. "He wanted to get together and start writing," Randy recalls. "But I wasn't ready to go back to LA. I'd just bought a little house in Nebraska, so Steve moved out here and we ended up writing about 26 songs. They were real R&B-oriented, because we both liked that style, but the songs just weren't me."

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Cool!! Very interesting. Thanks, D.
I "spoke" to a woman online who says she lived next door to guitarist Steve Edwards in San Diego when he was collaborating with Randy. She thought it was the early 80s. She said Randy would ride up in a limo late at night, about 1:30. She was a teenager at the time. She got up the nerve to knock on the door one night and had Randy sign an album for her. She said (as everyone does) that he was very nice and polite.
A couple of things sound hinky about her story BUT then again, who would think to make up a story involving a long-forgotten side man? His name was so unfamiliar to me, I had to check the first album's liner notes.
-
Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Wow, what a neat thing to happen to her! Imagine talking to Randy back then after hours...anyway, it does seem like a long drive to San Diego that late at night. Unless he was coming from his home in Palm Springs instead of L.A.
NMB, you run your own detective agency, don't you? :) Maybe you can find out what happened to those 26 songs! Lol

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
There's nothing I'd love more than to be a music detective - wouldn't that be a cool job? Someone should invent such a position.

I absolutely know you'd be the best, NMB! Great idea, D! But you seem pretty good at this, too, D! Maybe you could be a team, like Cagney and Lacy!
-
Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Thank you, LT. That would be fun! I'll be Cagney, or whoever was the smart aleck.

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
I found this old Billboard article about Randy that touches on the financial issues with his record company. This may explain why he didn't make any music videos for his 1982 album.
Quote:
Meisner doesn't receive tour support, but he remains active on the road, having played 50 dates in the last three months.
"Companies these days either don't have the money or are afraid to take the risk," Meisner says. "You've got to grab the bull by the horns and do it yourself."
The article goes on to say that the band members do everything themselves--production, carrying equipment, etc. and they stay in $40 a night motels.

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Wow, I'm sure that was a big difference from his Eagles days. Way to persevere Randy! :applause:

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Fantastic article, very enlightening. Thank you, Lady D! Girl, you got skillz. :applause:
Delilah, can you/do you search Billboard specifically? I've been looking for an article or item about the 1986 Black Tie tour. It would have been in the first half of the year. Supposedly Bernie Leadon joined them on some dates, according to a guy who wrote the bio on the band Bread.
-
Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
That's sweet of you to say, NMB. I found this article a while back but when I tried to retrieve it from my file, it somehow got deleted.
So to answer your question, I had a hard time when searching for it again. I tried it with Billboard as a search term but no luck. I didn't go into the Billboard website itself. Fortunately, I was able to go into a deleted folder and get it back (--why didn't I think of that before!).

Ok, NMB, just for you...and me and all other curious fans...hopefully this is what you're looking for.

Some weeks ago, in this column, we talked about seeing a group called Black Tie at a local Los Angeles nightclub. The group's focal members were Billy Swan, Randy Meisner, Jimmy Griffin and Bernie Leadon. That's a lot of talent, considering that Meisner and Leadon were members of the Eagles, Griffin was a key member of Bread, and Swan's "I Can Help" has become a classic radio oldie.
Well, Black Tie turned up on our doorstep on a snowy winter night a couple of weeks ago in a distressingly underpublicized showcase. Despite the lack of advance notice, however, the club was almost full, and those who braved the weather saw a high-velocity performance combining three of the industry's finest vocal talents. This time around, Leadon had been replaced by ex-Beach Boy Blondie Chaplin, who added a somewhat tougher edge to the instrumentation; otherwise the set was similar to the one we saw on L.A.

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
You are a champion! D., I crown you the Research Queen :)
Can't help but wonder what went down in the exit of the Bernster. Maybe he and Jimmy Griffin clashed.
-
Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
I agree, great job, Delilah!!
Did either of you notice that at the top of that page was a picture of a younger Vince Gill...:-D
-
Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Thank you both! The last couple of days I've been holed up at home with contractors upgrading our house, which is in disarray, and there's limited mobility around here. So anyway, I've had some extra time on my hands. I've found a couple of other little treats, so be on the lookout...
And yes, ETG, I did notice that picture of Vince Gill. Seems like he's everywhere now, lol.

D, you really are good at this! Thank you. :)

Thank you for the kind words, LT!
This from Billboard, dated 8/21/1982; there was no accompanying article.

Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Delilah, when people on YouTube and Facebook see the 1981 performances from the "Fridays" tv show, they always ask whatever happened to Therese Heston. The only trace of her I've seen online is that she did a solo album circa 1980 and there is a photo of her with singer Lauren Wood ("Fallen") on Ms. Wood's web site from maybe the 1990s. That's it, really. Don't know if Therese got married, changed her name, left the music business or none of the above. Have you seen anything?
-
Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
I've wondered what happened to her as well. I thought I read somewhere she had vocal credits on an album recorded by another female artist, but I don't remember the name. I do remember looking up the person on fb, but there was little info. Whoever this person was may have had something to with The Millenium. I'll rack my brain and see if I can recall.
I didn't know Ms. Heston recorded a solo album.

Ok, I found the info I referred to earlier. Therese Heston recorded and co-wrote an album with Colleen Stewart in 1980. Ms. Stewart also lists Randy as one of the many artists she has performed with either live or in the studio. I remember looking up her FB page, but I don't think I looked into it further than that.
http://www.stewartconnection.com/biography.html
Btw, Lauren Wood's website looks cool.
-
Re: Randy Meisner in the Press - Retro Edition!
Thank you for that! I remembered the female musician was a pianist but I couldn't remember her name.
I haven't actually seen a listing for Ms. Heston's album, just a post or two on YouTube from people who said it was good.
