Some extra info about this show:
It was a Linda Ronstadt show, and the four guys were backing her. All of the soon-to-be Eagles were in her backup band at one time or another, but not all four at the same time.... until this show in Disneyland.
Don and Glenn had been playing together in her backing band for several months - heck, Glenn had recruited Don for it. Randy had backed her for a time, but was working with Rick Nelson's backing band. Bernie Leadon had backed her too at one time, but had joined the Flying Burrito Brothers.
Glenn and Don had been talking about forming their own band, but didn't know who else they wanted in it yet. Ronstadt's manager John Boylan essentially told them, "You guys need a bass player and another guitar player/multi-instrumentalist who can take on the more challenging lead parts - no offense Glenn - and I know two guys who used to back Linda who'd be perfect. Not only can they play, but they can sing and write songs too - and they aren't too hard to look at!"
Meanwhile, Randy's gig with Nelson had ended. Despairing of his ability to support his family on a struggling musician's salary, Randy had returned to Nebraska and gotten a job working at a John Deere dealership (no joke). Bernie was dissatisfied with what he considered a diminishing role in the Flying Burrito Brothers. They both figured it was worth a shot to back Ronstadt once again and see if they clicked with Don and Glenn.
And "click" they did. The rock'n'roll world would never be the same!
While I don't know the setlist, Ronstadt has said that she did allow them to play a couple of their own songs. One of these is on her "Capitol Years" collection. It's a song by Glenn called "Get Up Kate." If you want to hear a shoddy-quality version the Eagles played on their first tour, you can listen to it here. On the "Capitol Years" CD, you can also hear Glenn backing Ronstadt on the song "Rescue Me."
Edited to add: I believe the four guys backed Rondstadt on the song "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" which was re-created for a 1974 special:

Re: Today in Eagles History
WOW--thanks Soda. That was really cool to read and see. Tomorrow is Ms. Ronstadt's birthday also!

Re: Today in Eagles History
I love the stories about "how it all started". As Glenn and Don have often said, we owe a debt of gratitude to Linda Ronstadt and John Boylan. Instead of being upset and angry because the guys wanted to start their own band, they actually assisted the guys in forming the Eagles. Little did any of them know at the time what was to come.
And OBTW - Get Up Kate brings a smile to my face everytime I hear it - such a raw, crude glimpse of what would come to be!

Re: Today in Eagles History
In honor of the release of The Country Bears, a little video from it! The song with Bonnie Raitt (coming out of bears) starts at 3:50. Cameo of real Don Henley at 4:50 and 5:20, where he says they're better than the Eagles. Ummm... generous praise. lol

Re: Today in Eagles History
Well - up until today, I used to consider this the single saddest day in Eagles history because it was this day in 1980 that the band played their last show together for a VERY LONG TIME. Even though it was two years before the breakup was officially announced, the "Long Night at Wrong Beach" concert was what many believed would be the last Eagles concert ever! Thankfully, of course, that turned out not to be the case, but we fans sure did have to sweat it for a long, long time.
But now, with the launching of the Eagles Radio Network today, there is some happy news to report. Hopefully, it will be a big success for many years to come.

Re: Today in Eagles History
I was just reading about this in Felder's book again!
I had forgotten that actually, he was the reason for the break up back then, and then, evidently, managed to get himself fired years later for asking too many questions about money! :brickwall:
At least the whole band didn't break up again!
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
I actually have this whole show here:
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/...aturedshow.htm
The noise drop outs between songs are where the sound technicians attempted to turn off the mics when Felder and Frey were threatening each other. So we've been denied the privilege of hearing:
"Three more songs 'til I kick your ass!"
"Great! I can't wait!"
Interesting that both Glenn and Felder claim that the OTHER guy was making the "kick your ass" threat - though they agree on the wording!

Re: Today in Eagles History
Oh, and here's a photo from earlier in the day. I believe it's before Felder dissed Cranston and/or his wife, although he and Glenn already look pissed, don't they? Maybe it was indeed afterwards! Or they were both in surly moods beforehand.

Re: Today in Eagles History
Ha! Glenn and Felder do look pissed! And Tim is thinking "man, I wish I could go home!" :hilarious:
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
LOL! I think we should put this in the Caption Thread!
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
BTW - one version of the story (I think the one in To The Limit) says that Glenn got mad because Felder acted disinterested at the press conference. Um... I don't think the author got that right, because they ALL look disinterested!

Well, when I look at this, all of the guys seem pretty disinterested and pissed, but Glenn and Felder do look especially pisssed.
I'm not sure whether the picture was taken before or after the diss either. Neither the account in Take It To the Limit or Felder's book really helps shed any light on it. However, as we have previously discussed on the board, Felder's account doesn't quite "jive". He writes ...
Quote:
"Glenn knew I wasn't comfortable with a rock-and-roll band doing a show for politicians. His hostility was compounded when Mrs. Cranston walked up to me backstage to say hello just before we went onstage.
"Hello," I replied. "Nice to meet you ...." As she walked away, I added, under my breath, "I guess."
Glenn, standing next to me, heard this and viewed my comment as an intentional slap in the face for the Cranstons, but he was wrong. I truly had no idea who they were, nor did I care, for that matter." ...
As this picture indicates, he, obviously, had met them prior to just going on stage.

But there had been a press conference at which Felder was specifically asked how he felt about doing the benefit, and he said he didn't care, which made Glenn furious (this is according to Marc Eliot). Whether he cared or whether or not he had met the Cranstons it appears that he was very rude to them.

Re: Today in Eagles History
I was kind of late posting this today (had pre-dated it 12:01 PM instead of 12:01 AM) but it's another historic moment in the very beginnings of the Eagles! They traveled to Aspen on this day in 1971 to do their first set of gigs as a band.

Re: Today in Eagles History
Ah, the release of the Outlaw Man single. Glenn's vocal on this is so sexy! Especially on this live version - I highly recommend you check out the video if you get a chance!

The performance has also been posted on YouTube here, although the quality isn't quite as good:

Re: Today in Eagles History
My gosh that was something! And they still play with that same passion today! Glenn's vocals are great and Don Felder's guitar work is unbelieveable! Joe was a 'bouncer' even way back then, wasn't he? :hilarious:
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
He sure was a bouncer! lol I love watching that - Glenn's passionate vocal, the way he plays the piano, the way Felder just hits it out of the park with his guitar, the way Joe works with him - and you have the rhythm section (Randy and Don) holding it all together... LOVE it.
I have my Border style on Desperado in honor of the release of Outlaw Man, even! lol

Re: Today in Eagles History
I love that song. I know they didn't write it but if I could have one really old song back in the set, that would be the one (that and Good Day In Hell).
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
Did anyone ever notice that Glenn changed the words in a couple of places in the live performance? For example, instead of singing " Headed for Oklahoma, I was ridin' night and day", he sings " Headed for Oklahoma, In a 56 Chevrolet". I wondered why every time that I listened to the album I wanted to sing "56 Chevrolet" there. I even went back & listened to the song again one time to see if he sang the words later in the song. I thought I was going crazy! At one point I did watch the video quite a bit so that is where I picked up the "56 Chevrolet" line. Now watching the video again I discovered that I wasn't crazy afterall :hilarious:! What I relief!
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
And the other notable change, instead of 'some say there's a Jesus/some that say there ain't' is 'some men pray to Jesus/ask him please relieve my pain' (sic). I knew about that because the old tape I have of the song in Australia at the start of 1976 includes those changes.
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
Yes, FP. That's the other change I was referring to. I can't decide which version I like better, but I do think I prefer the "56 Chevrolet" line. Do you know which way it was written originally?
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
I like the change in those lyrics better than the original ones. The "relieve my pain" lyrics definitely convey more of a sense of desperation and despair than the original "some say there is / some say there ain't / when you got no life to lose then there's nothing left to gain." The original lyrics seem to be saying "I don't care anymore - I've given up." The changed ones seem to be saying "I still care and it's torturing me." That adds a deeper shading to the song, which in this version ends with an anguished "It only looks like rain, it only looks like rain."

I would think that 'I was riding night and day' is the original line.

I thought it would be fun to create a new thread for our memories, so I did so here:

Re: Today in Eagles History
You know, as I did the "Today in Eagles History" for Sept. 11, I remembered the 9/11 attacks which happened 8 years ago today. At first I thought I couldn't really call it an event in Eagles history but then I realized it affected them strongly, as it affected all of us, and inspired them to write Hole in the World. I changed the day's status accordingly.

Re: Today in Eagles History
I noticed on the Today in Eagles History calendar that in 1965 Timothy was attacked by a female fan hired by his manager while he was in The New Breed. I thought that was hilarious. I have never heard this one before, but I take it that his band must have been struggling a bit if the manager had to recruit females to attack the members.
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
I guess he was hoping to give the impression to anyone interested in the band that there was "NewBreedMania" running rampant!

Re: Today in Eagles History
It was "the very best of" interview insert that tossed me into total Eagles mode. I always enjoyed their music, but it was those interviews that made me take a second (third, fourth, fifth, etc) look at who they all were and what their respective roles were/are.

I think that did it for me too. Although I had always heard of Don & Glenn, I didn't know what Glenn looked like until HFO. Boy did I get a "nice" surprise :fainted:! I had seen Don before on an interview about Walden Woods. My husband had purchased HFO a couple of years after it came out & it was always our favourite video. I had always loved their music.

Re: Today in Eagles History
Wow, 15 years ago today Hell Freezes Over was first aired on MTV.
It introduced me to the Eagles in the sense that it made me realize both Glenn Frey and Don Henley were in the group, and that they did several songs I'd heard on the radio but hadn't known who recorded them.
Anyone else have some "Hell Freezes Over" memories?
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
Of course, I do!
Unfortunately, most of the memories of HFO that stick with me aren't good ones except for my obvious delight that the band was getting back together finally. At the time of the 'resumption', everyone was thinking that it wasn't going to be a permanent thing. The thinking was that the band would get together and play a series of shows, and then that would be it. Obviously, the tickets were in very high demand, and very expensive. I'm not positive, but I think it was the first time any act had ever charged over $100 for a concert ticket. But they could, and they did. During this time, I was traveling fulltime in my job, but I wanted very badly to go to one of the shows (especially since I had never been able to afford to go to a show in the '70's). I tried very hard to synch up my travel schedule with a show, but it never happened. Even after the tour was postponed because of Glenn's health issues, I still couldn't manage to work it out. I was very disappointed, and, to this day, I have still not been able to "get over it". I will always regret not making one of those shows because I think this was the band at its absolute peak. After the band 'laid low' in the late '90's, I just figured I'd never get to see them until one fateful day in 2003 when I heard on tv that the Eagles were going to resume touring and would kickoff the tour in none other than my hometown - Richmond, VA. So as the old saying goes ... 'the rest is history'.

Re: Today in Eagles History
Awwwwwww Hell Freezes Over, my first real encounter with the Eagles, how could I forget that!
It was just an accident that I saw the concert at that time,
of course I knew songs like Hotel California, Take It Easy and Tequila Sunrise but
when I heard all the other great songs like I Canīt Tell You Why, Get Over It or Life In The Fast Lane I was totally enthused!
and so began my passion for the Eagles with HFO!
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
I remember it, too. My brother, who just lived down the road and was also a fan, happened to see something about them on MTV and called us to come over and watch. (We didn't have cable or satellite being poor and living in the boonies!) We dropped everything and rushed over and it was so cool to see them performing again. I'll always remember it as being different than what I have on dvd though. From what I remember, they were seated on the edge of a roundish stage with the crowd close by and it was a more quiet setting. Maybe I have this confused with another show? Or could we have seen the 'second night'? Anyway, we didn't know that they actually toured after that, but couldn't have afforded to go anyway. (2 very busy teenagers at home!) Then a few years later we were discussing them and hoped that they would tour again and we would somehow, someway try to go. We even thought if it cost as much as $200 per ticket for a really good seat, we would try to make it! Well, thanks to those teenagers needing (?) the internet, I actually tried it out and searched for info on them and lo and behold, we got our chance in 2002 in Ames, Iowa, and it was fabulous!
And then my obsession was rekindled, which eventually led me here! :yay:

Re: Today in Eagles History
My husband, Harold bought the CD of HFO when it came out, but it was defective & he returned it. He said that he didn't care for it. He had only listened once :eyebrow: & as Don says, most people don't like a record the 1st time they hear it. I was always more of an Eagles fan than Harold. Anyway, he didn't get another copy to replace the defective one & it was a couple of years later (I think) that he bought the DVD. Don & Glenn were the only 2 Eagles that I knew by name. I didn't know the history of the personnel changes. I had seen Don on a Walden Woods intereview so I recognized him, but I didn't know which one was Glenn Frey. I soon figured it out by the songs that he sang! I remember thinking that he was gorgeous :nahnah:. HFO became our favourite music DVD. Harold has a habit of switching TVs & components between our living room & the family room :-x. When he wants to check his connections he always puts on HFO & we usually end up watching the entire show! HFO kindled my interest in learning more about the guys but it was F1 that put me over the edge with Glenn. I don't know what took me so long! :brickwall:

Re: Today in Eagles History
Oh, I have to admit I didn't know what any of the guys looked like - I had seen the old videos from the eighties but I didn't know how they'd aged. I took one look at Glenn Frey and said "Wow - the 'You Belong to the City' guy looks HOT. How old is he again??" He looked even better than I remembered from his mid-80s videos. I was just starting college at the time and so of course I tended to zero in on such things. Never would do that now. ;)
(Not that the other guys didn't look good too - it's just he struck me as the most handsome.)
Anyone want to do an impromptu viewing party of HFO at 8:00 Eastern?
-
Re: Today in Eagles History
I don't have that many memories of watching it. I said something on my 30th anniversary that I mainly watched it to see that Glenn was still 'in charge', which he was. It was a 'reaffirmation' for me in that sense, but I remain very disappointed by the distribution of lead vocals in that show, and the huge number of slow ballads. When I saw the band on the HFO tour at the end of 1995, the show was far more indicative of what the band was like then. That is why in many regards I prefer to watch Christchurch over HFO.
So it's different for me - not the jaw-dropping revelation that it was for many people. I understand the excitement about it for them but I can't feel quite that way about it.
