Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Although overall this is Don's best album, for some reason, the worst song he ever recorded as a solo artist (in my opinion) is on it.
1. The Last Worthless Evening
2. The End Of The Innocence
3. If Dirt Were Dollars
4. Little Tin God
5. The Heart Of The Matter
6. New York Minute
7. How Bad Do You Want It?
8. I Will Not Go Quietly
9. Gimme What You Got
10. Shangri-La

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Happy 25th Birthday to The End Of The Innocence album.
This is my favorite album of Don's. Inside Job is getting up there as my favorite too. I love every song on this album.
Of course my favorites are The Heart of The Matter, The End Of The Innocence, Last Worthless Evening, How Bad Do You Want It and I Will Not Go Quietly.

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
I love the Heart of the Matter and Last Worthless Evening...I can easily imagine him singing both to me...
(darn, I've woken up too soon from that dream again, haven't I!!! lol)
Do not like the long-haired look though. The start of the video for LWE always makes me laugh. The first shot of Don shows him flicking his fringe away :hilarious:

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
This album has some of his best and some of his worst. I can't believe it's been 25 years! I know I've already told this story in this thread, but again today I thought about buying that black market tape in Saudi Arabia all those years ago. Funny what "album birthdays" make you remember!
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
"The End of the Innocence" is such a strong collection from Don Henley. I think there are only two off numbers, and both of them were also popular hits with many fans. (I won't name either of them. No controversies.) I like the title track, and probably all of the regional description-and-digression numbers.

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
A little late, but ...
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO THE END OF THE INNOCENCE!!!
A thing of pure beauty (with a couple of exceptions). I love this album and it is my very favorite of Don's solo work. It is very worthy of the recognition and awards it received, IMHO.

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
I'm late too. Funny enough, I heard The End Of The Innocence on the radio today. I love that song so much, the album is good too but that song really blows me away.

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Happy 26th Birthday to The End OF The Innocence. One of my favorite albums of his. CC might surplus this album. LOL I just love this album. I'm listening to it right now.
*Raises her pink champagne* Happy 26th Birthday, EOTI.

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Time for some "Heart of the Matter"!
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
For me, I've gotta play "New York Minute". That's one of my favorite Don Henley solo songs!

I thought Shangri-La and I Will Not Go Quietly were real highlights of the Henley live show I attended in '89. Freypower. Never really cared for The Last Worthless Evening though.
Some great songs but a tepid album imho.

A belated ...
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO THE END OF THE INNOCENCE!!!
F50, I'm sure there are some who may agree with you, but tepid is definitely not the adjective that comes to mind when I think of this album ,,, for me, I'd chose something along the lines of BRILLIANT!

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Yes, actually EOI was the first of Don's solo albums that I bought, I didn't buy the others until after I listened to EOI about a hundred times.
I don't usually do the ranking thing for any Eagles or Eagles-related album, but this one for some reason is pretty easy. I guess because my favorites on other albums change day to day, depending on mood, but this one is pretty set for me and always has been. In reality, I feel my top two are far, far above the others on the album. Not to say I don't like the others, I do, but when I have the CD in and playing, the top two average several repeats as opposed to one listen each for the rest.
1. The Heart of the Matter - one of my favorite songs of all time
2. The End of the Innocence - as with every song, I never think of the possible political statement, I only care about what it means to me and my life. This song means a lot, if not as much as THOTM.
3. The Last Worthless Evening - yet another song that gave the words to feelings I had at the time.
4. How Bad Do You Want It
5. I Will Not Go Quietly
6. Little Tin God
7. If Dirt Were Dollars
8. Gimme What You Got
9. New York Minute
10. Shangri-La - If I skip a song, this is it

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO A GREAT ALBUM
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
I was looking up The End of The Innocence. Four or five websites has the released date on the 27th. So I'm going to come back on the 27th to wish it a happy birthday.
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Yeah, there's conflicting info about it. It's the thought that counts, though. :)
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
I'm a bit late to the party again, but ...
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO THE END OF THE INNOCENCE!!!
This is my very favorite Don solo album and I have sung high praises for it in this thread throughout the years. I absolutely love this album and it is my second favorite of any of the band members solo efforts.
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Happy 27th Birthday to The End Of The Innocence album on the 27th.
This is my favorite album of Don's. I love majority of the songs on this album. Don and his long hair phase that didn't last. LOL

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Happy 27th Anniversary to The End Of The Innocence!
This was my introduction to Don's music many years ago, long before I first listened to Hotel California and got into the Eagles. Almost all of the songs on this album are very good, and this includes several of his best solo tracks, including two of my top three (The Heart of the Matter and the title track). I believe yesterday marked the anniversary itself, which is quite fitting on a personal level - I couldn't think of a better way of celebrating the 27th anniversary of the album's release than getting to hear Don play these two songs plus New York Minute (another album highlight) live. Quite a nice coincidence!
My approximate ranking of the songs:
1. The Heart Of The Matter (absolute classic)
2. The End Of The Innocence (absolute classic)
3. New York Minute
4. The Last Worthless Evening
5. If Dirt Were Dollars
6. Gimme What You Got
7. I Will Not Go Quietly
8. Little Tin God
9. How Bad Do You Want It?
10. Shangri-La (the only song that isn't particularly good IMO. I don't skip it, but it definitely feels less accomplished than the others to me)
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
New York Minute never fails to give me chills. And I like that Don wrote it as a solo song, but it perfectly fits TBS's backing vocals. Just finished watching "Hell Freezes Over", lol.
I saw Don on the "End of the Innocence" tour and was lucky enough to meet him afterwards. Very sweet, down to earth guy.
I would love to see him and Bruce Hornsby work together some more.
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Happy 28th Birthday to The End Of The Innocence album. I think this is my top three favorite album.
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Happy birthday/anniversary to what is probably Don's best album--although it's not my personal favorite, I still love it. It's a little too "heavy" sounding at times, but Don's singer-singwriter skills absolutely shine here. There are a lot of great tracks, and by this point it seems Don had matured and grown up. Yet he still rocked out and sounded current. He didn't wander into adult contemporary mode like some of his peers e.g. Glenn.
I remember these singles well from those days: "End of the Innocence" which hit #8 on the charts, and both "Heart of the Matter" and "The Last Worthless Evening" which peaked at #21. A 4th single, "New York Minute" reached #48. Not too shabby!

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Happy anniversary to The End of the Innocence!
On a personal level, not only is this my favourite Don solo album, it is also the album that introduced me to his music (a decade before I first listened to the Eagles with Hotel California!). As much time has elapsed between me first hearing it as a child and today as between then and its release in 1989, which makes me feel vaguely old! It's also funny how the anniversary of the album's release coincided almost exactly with my first (but hopefully not last) Don concert. Two of my three favourite Don solo songs are on this record, these being the songs that bookend the album (EOTI and HOTM).
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
I loved this album when it was first released and I still love it .. hard to choose a favorite song, for me, they are all great.
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Happy 29th Birthday to The End Of The Innocence album. This was my favorite album until Cass County came around. LOL
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
I love this album, definitely my favorite of Henley's. The End of the Innocence and The Heart of the Matter are two of my favorite songs of all time.

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
EOTI represents some of Don’s best work. He gives a lot of credit to Danny Kortchmar and Stan Lynch in this album review.
Quote:
As with his previous solo efforts, Innocence found Henley working extensively with producer and session player Danny Kortchmar, who'd been a crucial part of his stable for 1984's Building the Perfect Beast and 1982's I Can't Stand Still.
"I have the final say on what goes on my records, but Danny's the man. It's his baby," Henley told Modern Drummer. "He's got a little studio in his house, and he does a lot of work right there in his basement. The key is that I know how to conceptualize to him, and he knows how to read me. If I want to write a song with a certain style or about a certain subject, he knows what I'm talking about. We talk to each other sometimes by referencing old records or certain styles of records: Motown, the Philadelphia Sound, and Memphis. We talk in a language we both understand."
Also of extreme importance was the involvement of soon-to-be-former Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch, who received a special thanks in the liner notes because, as Henley bluntly pointed out, "he deserved it." "He's a real morale booster," he explained. "When we were into our second year working on the album and were getting completely batty and nuts, Stan would come down to the studio and just sit around with us sometimes and make things lighter. Stan's a very funny, very bright guy. Sometimes he assisted in production. Kootch and I would sometimes get so fatigued that Stan would catch things that we weren't exactly listening for. He was a fresh set of ears, a fresh sounding board."

He also claims to not be a perfectionist!

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Happy belated birthday to The End of the Innocence!
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Well, I'm also late to the celebration, but ...
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY END OF THE INNOCENCE!!!
This is Don at his finest IMHO. I love this album - it is my favorite of all Don's solo albums and my second favorite Eagles solo album of all time.
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Happy 30th Birthday to The End of The Innocence. One of my favorite albums of Don's. Great songs, great special guest and everything else.
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
I still remember buying this album as a bootleg in the backroom of music store in the Jeddah souk... not because I was trying to save money, but because in Saudi Arabia (where I was living at the time), rock music was literally contraband and I could not obtain it legally. It was in a cassette tape in a heatproof case with a cover that had been photocopied, and it cost 10 riyals. I told this story in much greater detail in this thread already, so I'm just giving the Cliff Notes version here, but I remember it each time the anniversary rolls around.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY END OF THE INNOCENCE!
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Interesting story, Soda. I've never heard that story. I did go back and read it early in the post.
Last Worthless Evening always makes me melt especially the music video (hot late 80s Don. I wonder who came up with the long hair. LOL) and I Will Not Go Quietly:fainted:
-
Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
I love this album, my favorite of Henley's (and in my opinion, his best)! I remember my mom had it on cassette when I was a kid, when I got into the eagles and their solo careers much later I remembered seeing the album cover, with Henley with the long hair and cigarette.

It's not his best look, but he makes it work!

IMO. I love it when it was down. Not in a ponytail. Why grow your hair long and have it in a ponytail that year and few months.

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
Once again, we have a discrepancy about the release date of an album. We have traditionally celebrated the release date as June 20, 1989 here; however, Amazon and Wikipedia both have it listed as June 27, 1989. In any event, it's hard to believe the album is 30 years old. I adore the album - it's my very favorite of Don's solo albums by far and my second favorite of all the band members solo albums. However, as much as I love the album, I am definitely not a fan of long-haired Don. This was not his best era as a fashionista, IMHO.
HAPPY 30TH ANNIVERSARY THE END OF THE INNOCENCE!!!

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
A great album and solo effort by Don. It went 6x Platinum in the U.S. and ranked #389 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. My favorite song is “Heart of the Matter.”
I agree he makes the long hair work, even though I prefer him with short hair.

What a cool memory tied to the purchase of this album. Almost sounds dangerous. :fear:

I'm thinking those backrooms must have been an open secret with the amount of people going in and out of there in broad daylight. The right palms getting greased... but yeah, I guess technically, I was in possession illegal goods! They also made an effort to appease the Mutawa - I have a Madonna cassette tape where they colored over her outfit with a permanent marker to make sure no skin was showing LOL.

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
I'm a date late, but I wanted to mention that yesterday, Feb. 21, marks the 20th anniversary of Don winning the best male rock vocal grammy for The End of the Innocence. It was definitely well-deserved. I love the song and Don's mournful, yearning vocals.

Re: Celebration of "The End of the Innocence"
This Grammy show was on YouTube and I got the whole show in my collection. I need to find it.
Poor, Don. It almost wasn't his night.
