Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
Here is a link to a video of Don from a show this morning. Is it me or does he sing, "I heard a shimmering light?" I don't know much about Foreigner or Styx, but their singers sound really good, especially the guy from Styx. I didn't see this video in the other threads for Felder news today.

Thanks!
Yeah, Felder made a little mistake there, it happens to the best of 'em.

Great performance by everyone! :applause:

Well said, Austin! I totally agree!

I thought they all sounded great! Should be a fun tour for them all!

Here's a link of Don singing two songs on the Arsenio Hall show last night. He was looking good and sounding good.

The videos of Don performing “Hotel California” and “You Don’t Have Me” on The Arsenio Hall Show are also on YouTube:

Full version of "You Can't Have Me"! Cool!

Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
He still looks great and that smile will always make me feel good. However, and I know I will be slaughtered for saying this, I don't like how he plays his own solo in Hotel California anymore. He has even changed certain notes along the way. Musicians will know what I'm talking about when I say that I hate all those E - D sharp pull-off's that used to be E - D's. Maybe he's thinking of a harmonic E minor scale, but the song isn't in the harmonic E minor - not even during the E minor chord. But most of all, they just sound bad to my ears. Like he's playing it wrong.
The whole solo sounds a bit "interpreted" and nervous these days as opposed to the beautiful and smooth piece of music that it is on the record.
But that's the only musical complaint about the guy that I have. I sure am glad that he's still out there doing what he's so great at. Plus nobody in the rock world smiles like Don.

Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
WalshFan88/Austin, are you around? Any thoughts about this? I don't know about music, but I will listen and see if I can hear the difference.
Agree that Felder's smile is luminous. Also, I love his speaking voice.
Edit: Yeah, I can tell the difference. To my uneducated ear, I guess I would describe it as "cheating" - it's like a little smoother or something, like he's glossing over some of the cooler parts. Anyway, I guess that's his prerogative. He sure looks and sounds good.
p.s. I did not know that Arsenio Hall is still on TV

It's slightly different for sure - a lot of the inflections are changed. Keep in mind it's in Am now and not Bm. And he originally wrote it in Em. Confusing lol.

Yeah, the new key changed it even more, but he already did those "D sharp instead of natural D" pull-off's decades ago. They always tortured my ears. But I do know that I'm the only one on earth who is irritated by them.:headbang:
Incidentally, those notes I mentioned are of course a D and a C sharp in the key of A minor, but I prefer to use the note names of the original key, because it's easier to compare them and since, unless my memory fails me, he changed those pull off's decades ago.

Yeah he's been doing it like that for a long time...

Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
So, this makes me wonder if they are changed when the Eagles do them? (Stuart or Joe)
-
Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
I would be really surprised if anything was changed for the Eagles' live version (except, of course, for the acoustic HFO one). In fact, maybe Felder changed it for solo versions because when he played it with the Eagles, he had to do it note-for-note the same as the recording (as Stu has to do it now, I imagine). Perhaps my ears just weren't attuned enough to notice it, though!
-
Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
There are a few slight changes now with Stu.
Namely he does a lot of pinch harmonics throughout the solo that Felder never did but that comes from Stu's fingerstyle technique. You can hear them has "light squeals" at the end of notes.

Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
Interesting. Thanks, Austin.

Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
I saw a video from Guitar World from a few years ago when Don did a lesson on how to play Hotel California. He said in that video that he changed the key so it would be good with his voice and friendlier guitar key because you have to remember. HC was changed to suit Don H's voice. Now he changed it to suit his voice.

Here's the video I'm talking about.

I remember this video. However, my complaint didn't concern the key change necessarily. A lot of the solo could still be played like he did on the record. To my ears he has changed it too much and there's no flow anymore. It sounds more like a combination of licks, and he's also over-interpreting them all IMO.

as cool as this is in theory...my favorite part is the guitar solo...which is just not the same without Joe countering him on stage...
and as Glenn said in HotE "You just can't argue with Don Henley's vocal..." (or something to that effect)...which was actually in reference to Victim of Love if I remember correctly...but it fits here IMO as well.
don't mean to be the negative poster in a Felder thread..(you can smack me if you want :steviesmack:) but just thought maybe some of you would appreciate this anyway! (if it's not already posted...I didn't notice it)

Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
I was rewatching the last videos posted in this thread and I have to say that Don gave a great performance on the Arsenio Hall show. He’s such an incredible guitarist. I love “You Don’t Have Me” from his second album, I think it’s a great rocker. Personally, I like Don’s singing voice. He now sings lead and also plays Joe’s solo on “Hotel California” and I think he does a good job. Don and Joe were one of the greatest guitar duos in music history. It's a shame they don't play together anymore. Joe is great, but Steuart Smith plays Don’s guitar parts without soul. There’s no chemistry between Joe and Steuart, in my opinion.

Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
Here’s the audio of Don’s live cover version of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” It’s from his 2009 concert in Windsor, Canada. From about 2:30/2:40 to 3:45 Don plays a really cool solo that is not on the original version of the song.

Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
Not only that - I got to meet him afterwards and he autographed my Airborne LP. He also took a photo with me but I look really ugly in it, so I have no intention of posting it, lol. I definitely felt very lucky!
I think his new shows will be even better. Like you, I'm eager to hear songs like "You Can't Have Me" and especially my favorite "Wash Away" live.
-
Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
I love “Wash Away” too. How cool that you got to meet Don! You’re lucky indeed!
-
Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
Thanks for the Superstition link, love that song and Don's solo is interesting, although it's a bit hard to "break through" that mean groove! Hope I'll be able to see him live one day...
-
Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
I love Stevie Wonder, and I especially love his ‘70s music. Don’s solo on his cover of “Superstition” is really fitting. I think that Don is one of the most creative and underrated guitarists in music.

Not to mention one of the hottest! He still looks great, even after all those years.

Don onstage with Foreigner (as well as Tommy/JY from Styx) doing Foreigner's "Hot Blooded". Don's solo was badassery at it's finest. The look on Mick Jones' face says it all!
I saw this on a guitar forum. One of my favorite get-up-and-go rock tunes.

Excellent badassery, thanks WF!! It looks like they're having so much fun. I like it when Tommy Shaw sings. Mmmmm....Tommy Shaw.....

Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
Apologies if this has already been post (a quick search didn't show a match)...
Back in June, Don Felder along with Styx and Foreigner, played at the annual Wal-Mart Associates convention (thought based on reports, only two members of Styx turned up).

Re: Don Felder videos on YouTube and other video sites
Man, what a tasteful solo he improvises on Witchy Woman. I'm glad he didn't learn Glenn's solo, because then hundreds of people on YouTube would think that it's Don's solo even though he wasn't in the band at that point!
He really has a great sound and his playing is very, very...tasty.
