It does make you wonder how some people ended up pronouncing it in the 'Germanic' way (Fry) and others pronounced it 'Fray'.

If I were Swedish my husband's surname would be pronounced 'GusTAFson' with a long 'a', but he says it 'GUStafson' because that's how I assume his father and grandfather said it. People also assume that the first syllable is 'Goos' which it probably is in Sweden, but Mike says 'Gus'.
