Yes, that was Jerry Surratt, with whom Don founded his first group called The Four Speeds. It happened in 1970, after the band had morphed into Felicity but before they were Shiloh.

I didn't realize it had happened right before Don's eyes, though. How horrible.

What a tragic event. Surratt must have been very young.

Yes, that was Jerry Surratt, with whom Don founded his first group called The Four Speeds. It happened in 1969, after the band had morphed into Felicity but before they were Shiloh.

If I remember right, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, the friends were at a town hangout and Jerry rode off right into the path of an oncoming vehicle and was killed instantly. I will have to do some research, but I'm pretty sure that's what happened.

Now you're saying that, I've read something like that indeed.
It's terrible to see that right before your eyes!

Brooke - that is also my recollection. I can't remember where I read it, but it was probably in an article in the DHO archives. I remember thinking when I read it what a horrible impact that must have made on Don.

Here is the paragraph about that incident from the Rolling Stone article that Mrs H just posted:

"Back in Linden, [Shiloh] got together one afternoon at a little church they had rented as a rehearsal hall. Things got loose and the musicians started riding trail bikes around the parking lot. [...] A small blond boy named Jerry Dale Surratt, a champion trumpet player who'd given it up for rock & roll, rode his motorcycle across the road, straight into the path of an oncoming car. With his family and band watching, he was crushed to death on its hood."

Thanks DF for that. I knew I had read it somewhere! We can always count on one of our Border buddies to refresh our memory when necessary.
