    Default Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio,CA-9/17/2010

The local paper, The Desert Sun, ran an article yesterday in its Entertanment section entitled "Don Henley Bares R&B Soul Tonight." Turns out that Henley is putting out two new albums. One is C&W and the other R&B-thus the title of the article. My point-I should have read the article more thoroughly (They had free copies of the paper outside the casino gym.) and I wouldn't have been so surprised when he not only did a George Jones song but closed the show with an R&B song and not "Desperado." Anyway you can read the article for yourselves at this link: http://www.mydesert.com/article/2010...B+soul+tonight

Henley was very talkative last night and looked ten years younger than when I last saw him at Chula Vista with the Eagles in May. He's lost a lot of weight. He looked great and sounded great and of course the audience loved him. What's not to love?

Henley didn't talk about the new albums, that were mentioned in the e-mail interview that he did with The Desert Sun, but he did talk about the sad state of the music business today, how he and Glenn rented a house back in the day in Idyllwild (which we always here anytime he plays anywhere near there) and lastly, how he did Joshua Tree long before U2 did and he did it the old school way "smashed out on peyote." WhooHoo! Those were the days! Rock On.

I got two whole pixs last night and have no idea if they are any good. Still using my 35mm camera so I have to wait for it to be processed to post them. I'd have taken more, the venue was totally camera friendly and Henley could have cared less, but for some odd reason the spare roll of film I brought with me wouldn't load properly.

So long story longer-He did a ninety minute show with a three song encore. I have no idea what the name of the songs were that he covered other than Wham's-"Everybody Wants to Rule The World". Tried to get a set list but the roadies totally ignored us. It was fairly obvious, at least to this fan, that they were hell-bound to pack-up and hit the road for Vegas by midnight.

Finally, I didn't get to swap lies with Henley by the pool over a Coors Light (big news flash) but I did swap hellos with Steuart. I was heading through the lobby to get something out of my car about 2:20 p.m. and we passed each other in the hallway. He was going to get a Starbucks. He was dressed in jeans and had his guitar slung over his left shoulder-real rock and roll baby! As I was passing through the lobby I saw Frank Simes and a couple of other guys standing around talking-no hellos there.

And, that is all the news that is news. Chow Bella!

Thanks for the info CL. Glad Don was talkative and looking so good. Sounds like he must have done his standard set list with the exception of a few different covers. But hey - who can blame him ... if you got it, flaunt it!!!

Love that Steuart was going to Starbucks with his guitar strapped over his back. Guess you just can't separate a boy from his music!

Thanks for the run-down! No Desperado, eh? Looks like poor Desperado has been getting short shrift lately. I don't mind if it means new fun things instead.

You know, the first time I heard that Don was doing Everybody Wants to Rule the World, I cringed. I believe my exact words were "Don Henley does Tears for Fears??? No way that will work!" However, now, I actually like it. Since you can't remember what the titles of the other covers are, CL, can I assume that they're "new" in the sense that he hasn't done them before?

Cool that you saw Steuart and he was nice to you!

Ooops! Thanks for not busting me Nancy. I said Wham should have said Tears For Fears. Actually I love that song-so danceable -but I will admit I took a bathroom break for that song.

Don did do "Desperado" he just didn't end with it as he normally does. He did LITFL, Desperado (with a full band) and some R&B song. One of the R&B songs was about being bad and afterward Don said he wished he'd written it. I wasn't too impressed by any of the cover songs that he did to tell you the truth. Probably because I'd never heard of them and they took me by surprise. Good to change things up once in awhile though. Wish he'd have included a LROOE song or even Get Over It. I miss that song.

And, to answer your question Nancy about the cover songs being new or not I have no idea. I know two of the three new songs were covers. One was by George Jones, one as I said he wished he had written and the song that he closed with may have been a new one that he wrote for all I know. The DS article said he was doing an R&B album but didn't mention whether or not there were any original songs as with the C&W album he's releasing.

Forgot to mention that the DS article also said that he plans on doing more recording and that the Eagles were going to scale back touring in 2011. Believe that when I see it but would welcome it if it meant that TimmyB will do more solo stuff.

BTW there were no stars out last night and my ears were blown (Henley's band was uber-loud.) so no singing on the way home.
Just found a link to a pix on the DS web-page from the show last night. Here it is: http://www.mydesert.com/apps/pbcs.dl...MtojurS1Hi4%3D

Someone posted a couple of vids from the show last night on YT. Lots of people were recording and taking pixs. Like I said no one said a word. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/user/suaret1

    Excellent! Thanks for finding those!

My mother loves George Jones, especially because she was born in Port Arthur, Texas and he's from nearby Vidor (although most folks from the infamous Klan haven Vidor claim Beaumont as their hometown, which is where I grew up). I think her favorite is the song "He Stopped Loving Her Today."

Both country and R&B albums, both country and R&B covers... could get interesting!

Got the answer for you on the George Jones song from last night's set list from RedRocks. It was "I Just Don't Give A Damn." One of the other mystery songs turned out be to a Garth Brooks cover of song written by among others, Tommy Sims entitled "It Don't Matter to the Sun."

I remember him doing "It Don't Matter to the Sun" when I saw his solo show in Chicago last year. I thought it was well-sung but seemed kind of low-energy.

I'm not familiar with the George Jones song, so I went and looked it up. George Jones was a notorious alcoholic for many, many years - and that song was written in the thick of 'em when he was married to Tammy Wynette, who was one of many trying to get him to slow down on the substance abuse. His response: "I just don't give a damn." I wonder why Don chose to cover the song. Does he just like it and think it's well-suited for his voice, or does it additionally have some sort of personal resonance with him?
