I was all set to say that this show was one of the greatest I'd ever experienced until I read the review in the newspaper which said that Garfunkel could no longer hit the high notes. Well, no, he can't, if I am honest. His high register was very reedy and breathy. He tried his best but sometimes the majesty of the harmonies wasn't there. It was left to Simon to provide the vocal highlights - the verse he sang in Bridge Over Troubled Water was easily the best part of the song.
Where I have a question mark for the 16th song, this was a solo effort by Garfunkel which he wrote himself. I think it was actually called There You Were but I will have to investigate this further.
A spooky thing happened on my way out to the show in the train. My iPod played For Emily.... and I thought 'well, this is one song they won't play'. They DID play it. Also, Kathy's Song was sung by Garfunkel whereas on the record Simon sings it.
It was so fabulous to see the two of them after so long (I saw them in 1983) that I wasn't that bothered that there weren't many vocal pyrotechnics. I do think though that it is accurate to say that the show's highlight was an awesome version of Simon's solo hit The Boy In The Bubble. Other highlights for me were The Boxer, The Only Living Boy in New York, El Condor Pasa and Slip Slidin' Away.
They seemed quite at ease with each other which was good to see. The legacy they have left is immense and I'm glad I got to see them for what was probably the last time.
