Just went and listened to the original version - wow, there's no comparison with regard to emotional intensity. (Admittedly, I've never found Brian Wilson's voice compelling beyond the Beach Boys harmonies).

Umm--do you mean Mike Love, the Beach Boys' lead singer, or both Brian Wilson and Mike Love? I think they are cousins.
I don't know about this one song, but I usually find the Beach Boys' vocal performances and musical arrangements compelling.

I was referring to Brian Wilson - but the Beach Boys are great as a unit. Love 'em.

ETA: At this time last week, the show had just ended! Wow, I can't believe it's been a week already!

I don't know about anyone else, but I find that a live performance often adds 'something' that you don't get in a studio version. I always found Tim's 'Ella Jean' a bit insipid (for want of a better word) on Expando, but live in London it sounded completely different. Admittedly it's still not my favourite song from Expando, but I do like it better.

I also think the fact that Glenn and Brian Wilson are two different 'types' of singer (or do I mean voices?) would have a lot to do with how the song is interpreted by each of them. I'm no musician (couldn't tell a B sharp from an F flat if you gave me a million pounds ) but presumably Glenn sang 'Caroline No' in a different key/register to Brian, which alone would surely have made a difference.

The live element can definitely add to it, that's for sure. I didn't appreciate "Long Road Out of Eden" (the song) until I saw it live.

The first time I heard "Long Road Out of Eden" was live. It was utterly stunning, both my husband and I were gobsmacked. IDWTHA though sounded a bit insipid live.

Sounds like Glenn brought all his talents to Niagara Falls - singing, playing AND stagecraft. Wish I'd been there!
