Walk Away wasn't recorded by the Eagles so you can pick another song.

Thank you very much. I guess I like Midnight Flyer so much, I put it on there twice. I would have to choose You Are Not Alone then, I'm really digging that song.

Hey, I'm glad this thread was revived. I first saw it a couple months ago, but didn't have time to respond then, and then kind of forgot about it. But, to me, this is a really interesting question, and, I think, a very different question from simply what would be one's list of what they think are the 20 best , or even their 20 personal favorites. Because, with this list we are basically saying, if I could only listen to 20 Eagles songs for the next several years (and thus, over and over again), what would they be? So, for me, I would be much less likely to put in the big hit songs that I have already heard over and over and know every note by heart (I can relive these songs in my head, without even listening to them), even though they may be some of their best, and i would put in more of the songs that have some personal importance to me, and that I would particularly like to listen to repeatedly.

So, anyway, here is my list, in listening order, and not surprisingly, it features mostly songs from the earlier albums, and most of Desperado (and most likely, if I really was stranded on a desert island with these songs, I would end up kicking myself for not including the FULL Desperado album, because they really need to be heard altogether).

    1. Take It Easy
    2. Train Leaves Here This Morning
    3. Doolin Dalton
    4. Twenty-One
    5. Tequila Sunrise
    6. Desperado
    7. Certain Kind of Fool
    8. Bitter Creek
    9. Doolin Dalton-Desperado Reprise
    10. Already Gone
    11. James Dean
    12. Ol' 55
    13. Good Day in Hell
    14. Best of My Love
    15. Journey of the Sorcerer
    16. Hotel California
    17. New Kid In Town
    18. Life in the Fast Lane
    19. The Last Resort
    20. How Long

Of course, so many great songs got left off, but that's how it is when you can only select 20 out of so many great songs. But the distribution of my list pretty well reflects my album preferences, with the most songs being from, in order, Desperado, On the Border, Hotel California, and Eagles, with only 1 song from OOTN and LROOE, and none from TLR (Of course, there are great songs on all those albums, just not as many top personal favorites as the earlier albums). And OK, I guess I did have to put in quite a few of my personal favorite 'hits', cause I just couldn't see leaving them out. A fun exercise, but please don't make me have only 20 Eagles songs to listen to, ever!

Yeah - that's the way I feel BBKron. I tried to do this when the thread was first started, and then I tried to come up with a list again yesterday. There's just no way I can do it. Hell, I couldn't even narrow it down to 40 songs, so I just give up.

Interesting comments, and nice to see you posting some of those songs that have personal meaning to you.

For me: I don't really hear music in my head unless there are lyrics - so I can hear SOME of Hotel California for example in my head, but not the guitar solos no matter how good they are! So I have to include those songs in my list.

I just tried to remember in my head the solos in Hotel, and I was able to sing (in my head) the whole solo like on the record. I guess it's because it's my favorite. I can remember some solos and sing to them but not others. HC happens to be a solo you can literally sing to, it's very lyrical.

I hope no one minds this thread being revived - I was searching through this forum and found this thread. Happily, I had already made a rough 20 song list of my favourite Eagles tracks which I could use. So without further ado, this is my top 20 Eagles songs, listed in chronological order:

    1. Take It Easy
    2. Witchy Woman
    3. Doolin-Dalton
    4. Tequila Sunrise
    5. Desperado
    6. Doolin-Dalton/Desperado (Reprise)
    7. Already Gone
    8. My Man
    9. Good Day In Hell
    10. One Of These Nights
    11. After The Thrill Is Gone
    12. Hotel California
    13. New Kid In Town
    14. Life In The Fast Lane
    15. Try And Love Again
    16. The Last Resort
    17. Those Shoes
    18. The Sad Café
    19. Waiting In The Weeds
    20. Long Road Out Of Eden

    Breakdown by album:
    Eagles - 2
    Desperado - 4
    On The Border - 3
    Hotel California - 5
    The Long Run - 2
Long Road Out Of Eden - 2

I'm not really sure how to describe my list except that I think there's a pretty good balance of hits with album tracks, some of which are fan favourites, others not. I enjoy all of the Eagles albums a lot, as shown by the inclusion of at least two songs from each one, although my two favourite records (Desperado and Hotel California) have the most songs on my list. There are a lot of songs that I would love to have included, but I felt I had to keep it to 20, which meant just my absolute favourites. I've based my list solely on the studio versions, which means some tracks which I think really shine live (Pretty Maids All In A Row and Outlaw Man being two) weren't considered.

LROOE probably deserved more than two songs - in fact my original list had one difference in that How Long was on in place of TALA. I then realised that this meant Randy wouldn't have had any vocals on my list, and I couldn't have that! TALA is my nominal favourite of his, ahead of Take The Devil, Take It To The Limit and Certain Kind Of Fool, but none of which would have been out of place here. Don sings more of the songs on my list than anyone else, although I have three Glenn/Don co-lead or shared vocals. I love Glenn's voice, but Don's is my favourite - though he does gain somewhat for having more vocals overall. but only the latter really shows here. There's nothing by Joe or Tim in terms of lead vocals, but I can live with that as they don't have so many songs - for the same reason I'm not too worried about the lack of representation for Hell Freezes Over.

If I was to name five honourable mentions:
    Take The Devil
    In The City (for Joe)
    Heartache Tonight
    How Long
    Do Something (for Tim)
