One problem I had with the doc: they would often discuss a certain time period and then show a photo from a different time - like talk about Don's days in Shiloh and then show a photo of him behind a drumkit from 1979, or talk about Joe destroying a hotel room in 1976 while showing footage of a video from 1986 which was parodying that behavior (an uninformed person watching the doc would probably think that was real footage of Joe destroying a hotel).

I understand why they do that kind of thing but I don't like it.

As for that lake footage, were those naked dudes even Eagles at all? I think it might have been stock footage of naked hippies thrown in as "illustrative" of what was going on rather than actual footage of them... rather gratuitous!

For someone like me who is a hardcore and has seen almost all of the footage before, I still found a few new tidbits - for instance, I didn't know that Glenn wrote "such a fine sight to see" In addition to the other lines he wrote of TIE. He was also explicitly acknowledged as being a lyricist on the song "Hotel California." The Long Night at Wrong Beach as it's shown here reflects Felder's take on it as given in his book rather than ones Glenn has given in the past, but overall there seems to be a general consensus on how things broke down (despite omissions about the more personal aspects of their feelings). Joe states in a very open and honest manner that he used humor to mask his insecurities, and that he was intimidated by Glenn and Don. That takes guts to admit. Those are just a few nuggets. There are several others.

However, an objection from some might be that extensive background segments were done on Don and Glenn, but the rest of the guys didn't even get their home state mentioned. Many photos of the band were cropped to just Don and Glenn. Some might say it was "The History of Glenn Frey and Don Henley in the Eagles." Of course, they are the only original members still around!

Randy may look old, but he seems to be in his right mind. That's good.

Bernie's gained quite a bit of weight since 2004 but is as forceful and blunt as ever. Gotta love it!

I do think it was a bit unfair of Glenn to say that Felder didn't like playing benefits because he wanted to keep the money. He plays benefits all the time nowadays. Of course, one could argue that is a recent development and he didn't feel that way in the 70s.

I most enjoyed the rare photos and old footage, which had me squee-ing with delight. I can't wait for tomorrow night!
Soda, have to agree about the naked hippies. It was footage used to focus on the "time period in CO." and what was happening.

With all due respect, perhaps for the older generation out there it is; but from my experience of my generation (I'm 18 ) HC is the only song many people know by the Eagles. The scope of its success is quite commendable - most of my friends have no interest in genres outside of house / dubstep / techno etc but some of them are still more than familiar with the song; I also get the impression from the likes of Twitter that the same is true elsewhere. Very, very few songs can be that well-known to people with no interest in the genre.

The thing that bothers me most about the documentary. There it is. I suppose there wasn't time. I thought it was awfully disrespectful, especially when it comes to Joe. Someone that had popularity long before the Eagles did. Someone the Eagles opened for before their great success. Don likes to pretend that Joe's career was somehow in the dumps when he joined. I'd have to disagree strongly on that one.

Yeah, I wish they had done more with that, too.

On another note, I'm watching Part 2 now and Don says something like, "The Eagles have written plenty of love songs over the years" and I chuckled at that, because I wouldn't call the songs they wrote about relationships in the 70s "love songs." How many of those could you play at a wedding?

I agree with MV and I think they could have said more about Timothy and Poco as well because Timothy as a Poco member was an influence on Glenn even before he founded the Eagles

I did like how Glenn made it clear in the doc that Timothy was the only one for them. He was unequivocal about that and it speaks volumes about Timothy's position in their world at that place and time. The Eagles were on top of the world, and they weren't interested in rehearsing anyone or talking to anyone else. On the current tour, when introducing PEF, Glenn does say when he heard it, it reminded him of a band he admired called Poco, so there is that. And then, the fans get their first view of Timothy

Wouldn't mind hearing more about Don Felder's early career, since he came out of relatively nowhere (especially compared to the likes of Joe and TBS). Must have been quite a big thing to go from roaming session guitarist to lead guitarist of one of the biggest bands in the world (probably the biggest around 1975-1977~).

Completely agree although we played LWKUA & BOML & OOTN at our wedding. The 1st one was appropriate. The 2nd one I didn't think anyone would pay attention to the words for real and I just like if. And OOTN was completely inappropriate for the setting but I was already gone by then & didn't care. It was my little protest for our families threatening to disown when we wanted to elope. I did have the wedding party come out to "For My Wedding". We were also late showing up because we were buying our first ever Eagles concert tickets but that's another story!

Another one I thought of randomly today - it's around the OOTN era I think, just after Irving Azoff took over - when the guys landed in the Caribbean (or similar) and they all get pulled over for being loaded with cocaine; Glenn says his worst fear was ending up stuck in the same cell as Bernie. I'm assuming that was a joke or would tensions really have been that bad that he would genuinely have hated it?
