I think I need to re-think my approach to these music videos. The main obstacle for me is I like seeing my favourite singers/bands perform live on a stage. I like to imagine I can smell the sweat.To the extent that no matter how big my love is for Randy I loathe the 1989 Poco music video 'Nothing to Hide' with Randy mooching about in set vocal scenes interspersed with clips of loved up and unloved up couples acting out the story. The song itself tells the story. Seeing and watching a singer perform naturally, exposing their emotions moves me. These music videos seem so contrived to me.

So I will rid myself of these prejudices and judge as objectively as I can.

This is where you & I differ on TSOYS. He is performing & expressing his emotions there. There is nothing contrived about this one for me. I can see why you think some of the others are contrived, Route 66 included. But I guess if you don't like the type of song, as you said earlier, you won't be convinced.

The point of music videos was to get away from the old idea that performers could only be shown performing. Sometimes the new approach worked, sometimes it didn't. My own favourites of Glenn's videos are the few in which he is performing, and TSOYS epitomises it. When he sings the song live, that is what he looks like; even when he bows his head at the end. He did that at one of the shows I saw earlier this year (Melbourne, I think).

I guess I need to pay more attention to these videos! Soda, your analysis of TOYL video is outstanding! I've never even noticed the pictures hanging on the wall! I will definitely go watch it again. I guess I was looking at the other scenery the whole time!

I don't know, I may have to quit playing this game.....I can't even rate these videos other than like or dislike! It's pretty much down to whether I like the song or not, not how well done the video is. I'm not much of a judge of that, I just don't know....

I will continue this round with a vote for Livin' Right and rely on you all to sway me one way or another from here on out. Probably won't change the outcome here, but I'm pretty much lost! ???????????

You were probably one of the people who urged me to continue with After Hours Survivor when I despaired because I was in the minority so often & now I urge you to do the same because your views are as valid & interesting to hear as anyone else's.

I'm voting off 'Livin Right' this round. It's funny and cute in some ways but I think it's rather dated by now too! I would love to see Route 66 survive another round at least. My favourite of them all TSOYS. Is gone already sadly!

As we’ve always say, each of us can use whatever criteria we wish to judge the videos. There is no right or wrong way. Some choose to analyze and examine them very closely, whereas, others may just go with their gut feeling. To me, any way is valid and the bottom line is to determine the ones that entertain you the most. However, as far as the criticism about the videos being contrived, honestly, I don’t get that. Of course, all videos are contrived even the ones that are performance videos, but some are just better contrived than others.

This round is a lot closer than I expected, and even though this will lose in the case of a tie, I’m going to stick with my vote too …
