    Default Best New Artisit 1972

The year of 1972 provided an amazing crop of young talent. The nominees for the Best New Artist grammy that year were America, Harry Chapin, Eagles, Loggins and Messina and John Prine, most of whom are still relevent today. The average age of the nominees at the time of the ceremony on March 3, 1973 was about 25.

Here's some footage of winners America betfore they were famous.

I now understand where the rumour that America was really Neil Young came from. The sound quite different and less polished than the records I remember. They look so young (all teenagers, I believe).

There's an online lecture from Gerry Beckley in which he talks about how they got going and the challenges they faced (including neglect from Geffen-Roberts).

I'm surprised the Eagles didn't win that award!

My favorite America song is Sister Golden Hair. Even though I love the song it does bother me a bit because for some reason I always think of a girl that my hubby dated before me back then. She had beautiful long golden hair. Surprising I still like the song!

I saw them a couple years ago at a very small venue and got autographs on my old albums!

Thanks for posting--I had forgotten about America! I liked Sister Golden Hair also. Cool that you got to see them again Brooke.

America - often unfairly referred to as "CSN Lite." We do a lot of their songs. Great group; they put on an exceptional show...
