    Default Statler Brothers

Any Statler Brothers fans here? I've been a huge fan of Don Reid's voice ever since I heard Charlotte's Web in Smokey And The Bandit II for the first time. I was a kid. What a lovely voice!
I'm not a huge fan of "story songs", but the lyric in this one really moves me, as does the melody...as does Don's voice...as do the background vocals etc....

This now-retired band is, of course, from Staunton, Virginia.

    NEW YORK CITY

She came to me shortly after Christmas
Said she hated spoilin' new year's eve
But the truth doesn't wait to come in season
And what we had feared was now believed
She said she'd leave come Monday mornin'
Catch a plane if I'd split the fair
She had friends who lived in New York City
She'd look them up and have the baby there

And now she's alone in New York City
Livin' like Lord, I wonder how
An angel in hell in New York City
But I can't think about that now

Honey, will you tell him Bible stories
And give him all the love I never could?
And never tell him too much 'bout his daddy
'Cause there's not too much to say, that's good
He'll have to learn it all from his mother
How to count and say his A B C's
But when you teach him prayers to say at bedtime,
Leave off "God bless daddy," won't you please?

And now they're alone in New York City
Livin' like Lord, I wonder how
Two angels in hell in New York City
But I can't think about that now
I can't think about that now

Here's the song from the movie that made me fall in love with Don's voice:

Are you kidding?! I grew on The Statler Bros! I don't remember New York City, though, but I do remember Charlotte's Web, of course. I remember I'd always make sure I'd watch whatever variety show they might be on at any given time. I also remember when the Oak Ridge Boys came on the scene and thinking they weren't nearly as good as The Statler Bros. Even that early in my life, I liked the bands who sang in harmony...

It's a weird band because they have sold millions of albums and won a lot of awards, but their albums are so hard to find. In Finland people don't seem to even know them!

One of my mom's favorite bands. I grew up listening to them. Love 'em. Hearing them makes me think of my mom.

I am a HUGE Statler Brothers fan. Since 1977 I have seen them 12 times. Way back they used to come out see the fans; pose for pictures and give autographs. I have been kissed by Don and Lew and have it on a home movie. I loved Lew but Don's voice is like no other. One time while taking a picture Lew threw his pick to me. I have it on display at my home. Glad to hear about other fans.

It was so enjoyable to read about your experiences with them. Thanks for sharing! There's an interesting interview with Lew on YouTube. I don't know when it was taped, but it was after he had left the Statler Brothers. He says in the interview that he feels he hasn't yet been able to say what he wants to say to the world.

My parents loved them, too, especially their gospel albums.

Thanks Chaim! I just found the videos. I will watch them next week. I can't believe I had not looked for them before. Will bring back great memories.
